UPDATED October 27th - Google Earth now available and I have successfully tested the Boxwave USB adapter that lets you use any battery pack to power/charger your iPhone, details on page 9.
UPDATED July 15th - Screenshots of GPS in action on the iPhone v2 -> >> LINK <<

Full coverage of WWDC on engadget : >> LINK << iPhone v2 page on the Apple site : >> LINK << This just in, Reuters is reporting that TomTom have ported their application to the iPhone and will be selling it to consumers.
"MSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch navigation device maker TomTom already has a version of its navigation software running on Apple's iPhone and has plans to sell it to consumers, a spokesman said on Monday.
"Our navigation system runs on the iPhone already," the TomTom spokesman said after Apple announced a new version of the iPhone that will include global positioning (GPS) capability.
The spokesman did not say when TomTom, Europe's biggest maker of car navigation devices, would be ready to start selling the software."

Indeed :
- Built-in GPS chip, apparently by Globallocate (Hammerhead 2 ?), but no GPS software other than Google Maps apparently, so no active guidance for the time being.UPDATE - TomTom say their software is ready for the iPhone, see above.
- A-GPS assistance via GSM and WiFi apparently, that's new
- Let's not forget 3G
- A miracle in terms of battery life too...at least paper : "2G talk time is up from 8 hours to 10 hours. 3G talk time... other phones have 3 - 3.5 hours, we've managed 5 hours of 3G talk time, which is an industry-leading amount of time."

| Yes, it's the familiar Google Maps Mobile version, quite useful around town but no match for Garmin and TomTom AIOs since there is no active guidance. I wonder if Google will add that feature or of Nav N Go will be able to release the port of iGo 8 they've been showing at tradeshows. |

Two thoughts...
With the newly opened programming SDK, I'll bet there will soon be third-party apps to take advantage of the GPS function.
Also, the contacts proximity feature is a mind-blower. Not sure if that uses only GSM tower info to map my nearest "buddies" or whether GPS plays a role too. With this new ability to see who's online within a 10-mile radius, we are so over having a shred of privacy left [grin].

What's stopping them from making a full featured app? If it only streams maps over a wireless data connection like other cell phones, it's not worth paying for. |

| They've already written apps for the Blackberry, released just about a month ago. I don't see any real problem |

I don't see why Garmin would bother making XT work on the iPhone with their nuvifone in the pipeline, this would be a good way of killing any potential market!
I'm a bit surprised about the TomTom story, the original source, gpsreview it seems, is saying that "TomTom has (apparently) announced"... |

I'm glad TomTom is making nav software for the iPhone. I hope it caches the maps locally so you don't have to have a constant live data connection to navigate. |
