How can I use my Nuvi when it's plugged into the PC? Everytime I plug it in, it goes to data transfer mode and won't allow me to plan my routes or use the touchscreen.
This question was asked in another forum and someone mentioned a rather difficult way to get around it which apparently originated from this forum. I thought I'd offer up this tip in case it could be helpful to others out there wondering how to do this easily.
If you want to use your Nuvi (or iPod for that matter) while it is plugged into the PC, you can click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon which appears in the bottom-right corner. Using a left click, you will see a short menu appear which will list the drive letter for the Nuvi. Simply click on this drive letter which will disable the data transfer mode and bring up the navigation screen but still continue charging the device.
I searched quickly to see if this was already included in the FAQs or tips section and couldn't find it anywhere so hopefully this isn't repeating information already available elsewhere. |

I have a Nuvi750 and the 2 procedures that follow work for all 7xx series GPSs:
Method 1:(PC ONLY) 1. Connect Nuvi7xx to PC vis USB Cable for 7xx to go into mass storage mode. 2. Slide Power Switch to the right (LOCK Position) 3. Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in system Tray on PC (Lower Right) 4. Click on "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - Drives(x:and y:)" x: = mass storage for the 7xx and y: = the SD card if one is installed 5. WAIT for 7xx to Boot UP. 6. After 750 Boots UP slide power switch to center position 7 WAAALAAAAAA ITS IN NAVIGATION MODE
Now you can put it in CHARGING Mode only, by sliding the power switch to the off position and releasing the switch. To get back into the Navigation Mode just slide the power switch back to the OFF position and release it. ---------------------------------------------------------- Method 2:(PC and generic AC/USB wall charger) Now the following procedure works with the PC and any generic AC/USB charger out there (such as my Motorola AC/USB charger).
1. Plug PC or generic AC/USB wall charger cable into the Nuvi7xx and wait for 7xx to go into mass storage mode. 2. Slide Power Switch to the right (LOCK Position) 3. Remove the USB plus from UNIT and immediately plug back into the UNIT 4. Slide the Power Switch on the Nuvi750 to the MIDDLE position. 5. WAIT for 750 to BOOT UP. 6. After 750 Boots UP it will be in the Navigation mode.
Now you can put it in CHARGING Mode only, by sliding the power switch to the off position and releasing the switch. To get back into the Navigation Mode just slide the power switch back to the OFF position and release it.
I am not sure which NUVIs can use this method but I know the NUVI7xx series works fine with either method.
I personally use the second method because that way I only have to remember 1 way for it to work with the PC and generic AC/USB wall charger. |

PS:
With the above 2 methods I posted in this thread you do not have the problem with satellite signal reception, as was mentioned in an earlier post: "NUVI 2xx series AC charger trick..."
You maintain the satellite signal with no problem at all!!! |

poptart: Your method does not work on my 660. When I left-click on the "remove" icon, I only get one choice, no menu. The one choice is to remove the device

If it is giving you the option to remove the GPS device, then that is the option you want to select.
In doing so, you are telling your computer that you want to safely unplug the unit without losing any data so it will terminate the data transfer feed if it is able to do so. If it's in the process of transferring, it will give you a warning that it cannot remove the device at this time. |

I'm sorry but I still don't understand . I don't want to remove the 660. I want to do as you stated above:

I have a 760 and running Vista. I followed this to the 't' and my unit gets stuck on step #5. It just never boots up, it stays showing the graphic for when it's in mass storage mode even if the icon in the task bar in windows has long gone. Only thing to do to boot it into Nav mode is to physically remove the USB cable. |

No worries.. if it's not something you've done before then it won't necessarily make too much sense yet. The idea is that you DO want to remove the 660. By telling Windows that you want to remove it from the system, it disables the data transfer mode to ensure that no data is corrupted by removing it while it is in use. What you don't realize yet is that even if you tell Windows that you want to remove the device, you don't have to physically remove it from the port until you are ready to do so.
In other words, you tell Windows to remove your Nuvi but you keep it plugged in anyways. This way, Windows disables the data transfer but maintains an active connection to provide battery charging while you are using the unit.
GPSPASSION: Sorry for overlooking your question. The reason why you know that it is still charging is because if it wasn't charging, you would see a message letting you know that it has lost battery power and it would then prompt you to either keep the unit on and use battery power or to turn it off. Since that message does not appear, you know that the GPS is still charging. Unfortunately, they have not implemented any other visual indicators or anything to let us know there is a full charge unless you go into the Status screen (holding your finger on battery icon until status screen appears) which will give you an indication of the current charge. Not sure if that screen updates itself automatically or if you have to leave and come back yet. Something to test I suppose. |

"while you are using the unit."
When I click to remove it, the 660 turns off(black screen). While still plugged in via the USB cable, if I turn the unit on(so I can use it), it goes right to transfer. Cannot 'use' it as a GPS? Yes, I'm sure it's charging but it's not usable?
Maybe I'm just not understanding what you are saying....
Sorry for beating a dead horse....

Hmm.. bizarre. I'll have to try it on my sister-in-law's 650 to see if it acts differently. Most GPS that I have tried allow me to do just what I've said and it does not turn off the GPS but simply stops the transfer mode. I'll check though.. maybe the 6xx series somehow turns off the unit altogether when you tell Windows to Safely Remove the device. If that's the case, then you'll probably have to follow the slightly more complicated way indicated by hdhannah. |

To all that are having trouble with SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE do the following!!!!
RIGHT click the remove icon in the system tray at the right bottom. this will bring up a small popup menu with the following: " Safely remove USB Mass Storage - Device(X: ,Y:) " X = Nuvi drive number, Y = SD card drive number if inserted
Rremember to "RIGHT" click the Safely Remove Icon
If you LEFT click you get "Safely Remove Hardware" this is NOT the one you want!!!!! RIGHT CLICK, RIGHT CLICK, RIGHT CLICK!!!!!! RIGHT CLICK

Like yourself hdhannah, everyone should just use your method #2. It works great, straight forward and applies to both USB/PC and USB/AC Chargers (eg. Motorola charger). Makes it easy. |
