| Just found out on another GPS site that 4.40 firmware is now available for the 600 series. The only change has something to do with updating "retail maps". Anyone know what the heck "retail maps" are? |

The exact Garmin text can be found here http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1921 Changes made from version 4.30 to 4.40: * Corrected issue with Retail Map Update compatibility
-- Clearly they are not going to fix the bugs they introduced in earlier "upgrades" .

| Retail, as in purchased...either on their own or already on the unit. I'm assuming this is what they mean... |
nüvi 3490LMT, nüvi 3790LMT, nüvi 765T, nüvi 855, nüvi 760, nüvi 750 |

| It would be nice if they'd fix at least one of the many issues we've all discussed.....like lag. |

| Which begs the question: my 650 is now at 4.10; currency converter works ok. Is there any compelling reason to go to 4.40? Or should I wait for more tangible improvements before upgrading firmware? |

I stuck with version 3.7 due to its more sensitive screen touch - for me this outweights the benefits from other "fixes" in later firmware. I don't expect Garmin to issue many more, if any, firmware upgrades for the 600 series.

Why not? They offered updates to the Street Pilot 2720 long after it was discontinued. One such update even included the option of switching to a QWERTY keyboard layout. That IS one thing that really pisses me off about Garmin, though. ALL of the Nüvi line-up prior to the 700 series only have the alphabetical layout. Garmin's shown they have done it before and could do it again. I'd bet there'd be very little to no change in the code, either. I, and many others, have requested Garmin add the QWERTY layout in an update, but they STILL refuse to do so. |

"Why not" you ask? I see no evidence that Garmin is interested in fixing any bugs introduced in their earlier "upgrades" - do you? If they were, we would have them fixed by now I believe. They have moved on to focus on their 700 series and now the new 800 series customers. BTW - I hope I am wrong here :-)
Garmin wants you to buy a new Nuvi - that is why they aren't doing any major feature changes. Garmin's mentality on the Nuvi line seems very different from the StreetPilot line - don't you think? |
