General use information, This is a typical example of 'How to brick your device'. Now if you have the UPGRADE screen activated, you can enter into the 'blue screen' and it shouldn't be a problem to upgrade to other version of firmware (with only one condition: Don't write the bootloader - uboot.bin). As a general rule: is not recommended to upload a firmware that is not compatible with your device (type, model and region); but (even if I will repeat my self) if you have the UPGRADE screen activated the chances to recover your GPS are increasing.
Greetings,
I have tried to perform the downgrade as described previously, and using either of the two EEU roms, but absolutely nothing happens after I have extracted and copied the files to my C520 - European version, and then having performed a hard reset. Any suggestions pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

PeterMJ, "copied the files to my C520" I am not sure I understand ... how did you copied those files? Because this is a firmware upgrade you should open the "blue screen" and perform all upgrades from there. That is not a "copy to ..." ! Can you give me more details on your procedure? tell me step by step what you did? (in order for me to understand where is the problem) |

Thank you for the reply, G_Alin. Sorry for not describing this very clearly. Ok, so here is what I did:
I copied the files from the folder called "SD Card" of the galin_UPGRADE_MIO_01Jul09 unto an SD card, and then also the winceimg from C520_EEU_ROM_R02 or C520_EEU_ROM_R45 to the same card.
Then I inserted the card into my Mio C520 unit, and did a hard reset by pressing the power-button for more than 12 seconds. When the unit restarted it just went into the normal welcome screen of the MioMap 2008 (firmware version C520WEU+V1+9931+0051), and then the normal menu of MioMap 2008 appears.
So there does not appear any application with a super-user button or anything like that, just the normal MioMap 2008 menu-screen. Am I doing something incorrectly?
Best regards, Peter |

PeterMJ, The files winceimg.bin doesn't have to be on the SDCard ... those files can be on the PC and will be used later (when you activated the UPGRADE screen). Questions: 1. your device is unlocked? Do you have access to Explorer / Desktop? 2. This firmware is the original firmware? or did you upgrade from an older firmware to this new firmware? 3. Do you have access to My Flash Disk (using USB connection with PC)? if Yes: download the file Device.xml open it with IE and copy the information between <hardware> and </hardware> and paste it to your gpspassion post. We'll move forward after you have an answer to those questions ... |

Answer to 1: No, the device is not unlocked. I did not know that this was necessary. I have tried to run a SD-based unlock, but that did not work (nothing happened).
Answer to 2: This firmware is the new firmware that came with the MioMap 2008 DVD. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the original firmware which was based on MioMap 3.3. I do have the original DVD with the firmware, so perhaps I can find out the version number there, if required?
Answer to 3: yes, I do have acccess to My Flash Disk, and here is the information you asked for:
<hardware><type>Mantas405A43t_WEU</type><displayname>Mio</displayname><version>-1</version><id>319312AFB83C74110802FC9219E6F400</id></hardware> |

| PS: I would like to add, that I have not been able to do an SD-Free unlock, as the instructions I have so far found for unlocking mentions a MioMap folder, that has to be renamed, but after doing the above firmware-upgrade there is no such MioMap folder on the device anymore. Instead there is a "Navman" folder, but I don't know what to do about it. |

About the Navman folder, inside the "Program Files" folder: there is a document there called "Version", and the contents are as follows:
[VersionInfo] Name = Mantas405A43t_WEU Brand = NAVMAN Enabler0 = 26A754EC74 Enabler1 = 656701077aaf4e14 VersionID = 5.55.0058 BuildTime = 2009-02-19,22:02:06
[Auto-Update-version-info] Version = 5.55.0058 |

PeterMJ, open the SDCard forder and rename folder 'Mantas405A43_EEU' to 'Mantas405A43t_WEU'; After that insert the card into GPS ... everything should start automatically. ... but before you do that you should check on your original DVD the firmware upgrade ... anyway maybe is not a bad idea to do a backup of your SMFlash first ... If you want to backup use http://www.gpspassion.com/upload2/DiskRW_C520EEUT_v1.zip (also rename folder 'Mantas405A43_EEU' to 'Mantas405A43t_WEU') and after restart you should have access to your desktop. Open DiscRW.exe and save your SMFlash.img to a SDCard. 1.Start DisKRW 2.Select from combo-box (close to 'Store:') -> SMFlash 3.Press '...' button and select 'Storage Card' (where to save your SMFlash.img) 4.Press 'Read' button After that upload the SMFlash some where and I will extract the winceimg.bin. After that you can upload the C520. here http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=127723&whichpage=1 you can find the C520 WEU version (those from here are for East Europe - EEU). |

Yes, now the unit is unlocked, and I have access to WinCE from the SC card:-) I have done a backup of my SMFlash, just in case.
I do not quite understand the section, where you write "If you want to backup use http://www.gpspassion.com/upload2/DiskRW_C520EEUT_v1.zip (also rename folder 'Mantas405A43_EEU' to 'Mantas405A43t_WEU') and after restart you should have access to your desktop.". How can it be a backup, if I am downloading the zip file from the web? Sorry, if I am being ignorant here, but I have no prior experience with hacking a gps. But I assume, that you are talking about backing the winceimg up to this website.
Anyway, continuing further, I did rename the 'Mantas405A43_EEU' to 'Mantas405A43t_WEU', and then tried starting DiskRW, found within the extracted folders of http://www.gpspassion.com/upload2/DiskRW_C520EEUT_v1.zip. But then I get a message that DiskRW is not a valid Win-32 program. |

PeterMJ, If you have a backup ... doesn't matter what I was trying to tell you ... if you have access to wince (explorer/desktop) copy from package galin_UPGRADE_MIO_01Jul09.zip the folder SDCard (only the content of the SDCard folder) to a SDCard available and rename the folder 'Mantas405A43_EEU' to 'Mantas405A43t_WEU'. This way the software that should unlock the upgrade screen will start automatically. If the software doesn't start (using explorer from GPS) start manually SDCard\UPGRADE\w_coredll\cUPGRADE_APP_.exe. Theoretically if you have a file on SDCard on the path SDCard\Mantas405A43t_WEU\auto.exe should be started automatically when you insert the card. Can you confirm/infirm this statement? |

| Ah, realized that the DiskRW program needs to be run from within WinCE, not on my Windows computer:-) I have the backup of the winceimg, and I will find a place to upload it to. I assume that I now should try and follow the instructions on page 4 of this thread, since the unit now is unlocked. |

Yes, I can confirm that changing the folder name to does make the upgrade-program start automatically. So I put the contents of the SD folder from galin_UPGRADE_MIO_01Jul09 unto the SD card, and now I went through the upgrade as far as step 10:"Go to 'wince upgrade' \ 'wince by USB (quick)' if you want to keep the My Flash Disk OR 'wince by USB' if you want to format also My Flash Disk"...
Here I encounter a problem:
If I choose Wince by USB (Format) or Wince by USB, I get a message that the unit is not connected to the PC. (And it doesn't help connecting it, because Windows does not see the unit in My Computer).
If I try the Window by SD/MMC, with or without format, I get this message:
"Waiting!! BOOTSEC is in Sector 245!! MountDisk SUCCESS! Open CEimage can not find WINCEIMG.CKS Any key to continue" |

Correction to the previous post: Yes, I can confirm that changing the folder name to 'Mantas405A43t_WEU'does the trick, and let the upgrade process start automatically.
And of course, I meant "If I try the WINCE by SD/MMCwith or without format, I get this message:
"Waiting!! BOOTSEC is in Sector 245!! MountDisk SUCCESS! Open CEimage can not find WINCEIMG.CKS Any key to continue".... |

so, the unit has to be seen in control panel \ system \ device manager \ USB devices. we'll continue Monday ... make sure the device is in Device Manager. If is there update the PC drivers with the one's from package. After that GPS is seen like 'SEC .... ' then when you connect the GPS to PC you'll see the connection on the GPS screen too. |
