Hello,
I have received the Fortuna GPSmart from SEMSONS and I have tried it : it works flawlessly as standalone except that it gives me a wrong position with an error of 1° : I have checked with navigation and aviation charts, charts calibrated with oziexplorer : the GPS gives me N 45°48.837 W 1°34.580 instead of N 44°48.837 W 0°34.580 (right position).
I leave in Bordeaux and the position shown send me 70 NM from here...in the Atlantic Ocean....
But I have tried to use it with my PDA (IPAQ 3970) and OZIEXPLORER via bluetooth, and got a right position with OziExplorer...the data were right with OZIEXPLORER and wrong on the Fortuna display...
Now for the bluetooth connection. I have got a connection ...only one time with ozi explorer. I have tried different protocol, different baudrate (38400 indeed) but no way... the PDA sees the GPS but doesn’t receive or doesn’t “understand” the GPS.
I have tried with aviation navigation software such as NAVGPS and Anywheremap : NAVGPS sees the signal when it scans the different com port and when scanning the com 8 (bluetooth port), I have a “waiting for NMEA data” message but no fix...(for the other scanned port, it read “no GPS”)
Anywheremap and another software called TOMTOM GPS navigator (similar with MAPOPOLIS) doesn’t see nothing... I have checked the connection with bluetooth manager (IPAQ software) and the PDA receives the GPS (I have also tried to create a link with GPSSMART and the PDA but a key pass or a “PIN code” is required : I have tried to enter 0183 without success (I have an error message telling that it's impossible to exchange key pass...). I have also noticed when I connect the GPS “to SPP slave” (in bluetooth manager) , and launch a software, and then coming back to bluetooth manager, the connection is often shown as disconnected ... The bluetooth signal is strong and the GPSmart is recognized...
Do you have similar reports and any idea to solve my problem.
Thank you

no haven't seen these problems before. 1. I'll check the position display error 2. Not sure what could be going on about the connection. The obvious answer would be resetting the GPS, but you can't do that over Bluetooth. It's also unlikely that you could have messed the settings up via Bluetooth for the same reason (it happened to me with a CF GPS today so that's one thing to look out for when a GPS stops responding). I would suggest going with the "trusty" CE Monitor (in the downloads) to see if you can establish a connection. The IIe/LP chipset auto-senses the bitrate, so just select any bitrate. Also do some soft-resets on your 3970 and restart the discovery process and make sure you use the right COM port without scanning as that might confuse the GPS program.
PS - Quick question, did you buy this through the Club?

Bonjour Guillaume...
I already answered you by Email...do you remember me?...I had some issue with my loggin...
So yes, I have already tried to soft reset the IPAQ, and tried to delete and reset the discovery process of my GPSmart...
Just download CE monitor...tried Com4 bluetooth, com 8 (the bluetooth com for the IPAQ I think), baudrate at 38400...no results...

Hi,
I am also experiencing problems with my bluetooth connection. I can't get it to work with mapopolis whereas I can see my position on CE Monitor (com 8).
I tried connecting the GPS “to SPP slave” (in bluetooth manager) , and launch a software but it can not see it...
In fact, before seing my position on CE monitor, I was even wondering if it was working.
I don't know what to do to have it working...
Any suggestions?
thx

Hi, This is the reply from Fortuna. Regarding the connection to PDA, please check the steps as follows, 1. Please be sure to switch the Bluetooth "ON" on the GPSmart BT before bluetooth linking. When the bluetooth is working, there is a "BT" sign shown on the LCD. 2. On your PDA, please go to the bluetooth manager, and search the bluetooth device. After finding the "GPSmart", please select it and save it. 3. You may select the "GPSmart" to link to SPP slave. Then, open the navigation software. 4. On the navigation software, please setup the GPS at "COM 8" and "38400" as the baudrate for IPAQ 3970. 5. Start to run the program.
There are something related to the linking, 1. When stop running the program, or doesn't link with any program for a period of time, the bluetooth manager on PDA will disconnect the SPP slave linking automatically. 2. Depends on different mapping software, it is not necessary to always link to "SPP slave" before running the program. However, the "GPSmart" should be selected and saved to the bluetooth manager on PDA. 3. Please do not make a link to PDA except the "SPP salve" link. The GPS data will go through the serial linking only. 4. Most of the mapping softwares can auto detect the buadrate, but still need to set up before running for some softwares. We suggest user to setup the buadrate for 1st time use. 5. For IPAQ 5455, please make sure to disable the Wireless LAN before activate the bluetooth. WLAN and BT can not work in the same time. Please follow the same steps as above. 6. If the mapping softwares which do not support "Com 8", it does have the problem to link with bluetooth GPS. Please contact the mapping software to upgrade if possible. At current market, most mapping softwres do support "COM 8". 7. For the user who uses the CF bluetooth card, the COM port setting will be "COM 5" in most cases.
We will check the wrong position display and get back the answer. Thank you.

Thanks for the detailed explanations "fortuna". I haven't had any BT problems myself using the Socket BT card on my PocketPC or a standard USB dongle on my laptop.
I just noticed that the position display was indeed off by 1 degree of latitude (43 instead of 42) and 1 degree of longitude (3 instead of 2) but for longitude it sometimes displays it correctly, which might make it hard to troubleshoot...I hadn't thought of checking that during my testing as the position via USB or Bluetooth is correct. Probably just a flag/register setting. Hopefully this can be fixed by a patch.

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately, I have followed the different steps and there is no more result :
the fortuna, is shown as available on my PDA, and when I link it to SPP slave, it is shown as connected : I launch a navigation software and it stays as "connecting..." or "waiting for NMEA DATA", or nothing at all (CE monitor)...
I have already empty one set of batteries, desperately trying to make the GPSmart working...Maybe I have forgotten something but I don't know what and what can I do more...
Hopping that someone will find the key...
Thanks again
Lionel

Not sure what to suggest other than if you're in the Paris area to give me a call so we can see if we can try something else!
The odd thing is that it worked initially and you can't change any settings on the GPSmart over Bluetooth. Computers/Devices do stop working sometimes for no apparent reason, so that could be it. Have you tried your iPaq with another Bluetooth device, have you tried the GPSmart with another computer via a USB dongle for instance? Did you turn BT on and off on the GPSmart? What version of the GPSmart do you have (look in setup)
Concerning the degree error, Fortuna tells me that switching to the native degre, minute, second mode takes care of it. I'll try that today.

Hi,
The bios version is 2.21 - I also thought that it could be an issue with the IPAQ (I think, but I am not quite sure, that I have already seen a topic from someone relating some problems with the IPAQ 3970 bios version (2.10) )
May be I could send my GPSmart to you by mail? So you could verify it with your PDA...
Thank you

I've got the same software version 2.21. If you want to send it, that's fine with me. Send me a private email.
I tried the position setting to fix the degree error. It works, but it's only available in "Navigation Mode", not in the overall settings. We'll have to wait for a patch to become available then to fix it completely.

I just received my fancy new fortuna gps (which I got via club discount). Anyway on the issue of linking with mapopolis..make sure you disable the auto com port detection and manually set it to com8..on my ipaq 5450 when set to manual it gets to com5 when auto searching then hangs. Anyone know how to get mapolopis setting to stay on com8 for gps connection..everytime I restart the setting go back to auto. One more question anyone notice the lcd on the fortuna has "streaks" across the display across the entire screen when a few of the pixels "light up"

the "streaking: is worst when starting up, some of the other screens have it but it's not too bad just makes some of the text seem a bit fuzzy...not a major problem just curious if it was just my unit. I think you are right on mapopolis loosing it's setting on soft-resets (just something I;ve been doing alot if recently tring to get everything to play nice)...mentioned the com8 manual setting since i was having a problem connection like the previous poster till I changed from auto.

I just got my GPSsmart.
The Bluetooth works well. Here is my setting. For the com port and speed, I set it to auto on the Mapopolis. I do not enable my SPP slave link. (if I do, the signal drops every 2-3 sec.) You don't need to create a bond to GPS either. Just make sure you click on the icon for the GPSmart to check its existance before you start your Mapopolis. The GPS will work great with Mapopolis. It won't work with my Microsoft Pocket STreet 2002, Delorme Xmap for handheld.
Hope this helps. Benjamin
