UPDATED 20090408 : NT2010 maps now available join the [TOPIC] Garmin CN NT 2010 Maps - Available 04/2009 topic do discuss.

UPDATED 20080412 CityNavigator NT 2009 maps available, first user reports on >> here << on page 6

UPDATED 20080328 Posted by ZX14NINJA in another thread : "The V2009 N/A maps have been announced today for May release. Update DVD's will be available then and I suspect that most units being shipped from Garmin in late April will have the V2009 maps pre-installed. Pricing is $69.95 USD from Garmin."

Posted by [b]2007rkjb on 03/20 : Go here: http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp and you see this in bold face letters.

"We are making our map data even better! The North America 2009 map update is scheduled for release in late April. Check back to order a map update for your product."

That's as obvious as it gets. A new map is coming for my Nuvi. Whether or not I have to pay for it for the 760 I bought in December is anyone's guess.

I was just talking to a Garmin rep who said that the new 2009 maps will be out in May.
Does that mean that I should wait until May to buy my Nuvi 750 to make sure I get one with the new map.
He said that if I bought a Nuvi now , I would have to buy the new map in May.
I am not sure if I should wait.
Any thoughts ??
Thanks in advance,
Jake

Some information about 2008/2009 here

EDIT - Comment by danham below moved here

"I'd take that post with a big grain of salt. Why with all the hundreds/thousands of people here who have driven many tens of thousands of miles using v2008, have we never heard this before? And even if it had a shred of truth to it, it would be a very cold day in hell that a company employee (at least one that is sober) would say that to a customer.

I notice Amazon, who has to be one of their bigger retailers, is still selling it.

I give this a very low credibility score."

Don't tell me they are starting this crap again this year.

Last year we went through months of them saying that everyone had to pay for the V2008 update even if you had just bought your Nuvi days before the new release was available. After the uproar that that mindless decision caused they went back to the previous policy which was - if you bought a new GPS after the new maps were announced and it had the old maps preinstalled, you got the update for free.

Lets hope they have come to their senses.

@jotne, the posts in the thread you link to sound really strange. If this software is dangerous as the poster says Garmin told him and Garmin are not offering us all a free upgrade and recalling the copies of V2008 already out there, then it sounds like a "class action suit" waiting to happen.

Just a couple of days ago, I heard a news report on a local news radio station here in Los Angeles (either on KFWB or KNX, both well respected and around for a long time) about something regarding GPS units and their safety (or people's stupidity). I did NOT catch all of it but it mentioned something about individuals doing exactly what their GPS unit was telling them to do...like driving off a pier or going the wrong way on a one way street. It did not mention any nav units in particular either. Maybe this "defective map" rumor had some roots in that story (or visa-versa).

I've seen stories for quite a while now. A lady in England had her car hit by a train because she blindly followed a GPS. It's all BS. It's like the story of the cruise control on a Winnebago....guy hit cruise and went back to make a sandwich. He was surprised when the bus went off the road and rolled. This is a TOOL...not a bible. Anyone that blindly follows the directions without using jsut a small bit of common sense, and ends up going the wrong way in a one way, or driving off a pier, or getting hit by a train, should have their drivers licenses revoked. If they happen to not survive, it pretty clear evidence of "Survival of the Fittest"

I read the thread as well. Makes no sense whatsoever. Best Buy has the map ON SALE no less, and still on the shelves. New map was already scheduled for May to the best of my knowledge.

NanaimoRick, a poster at another forum received the new map from Garmin after the unit he bought just a few weeks ago was apparently old stock and had the old map installed. Another sent his unit in for repair and received back with new maps. I don't see Garmin making an issue out of a few free map upgrades with last years uproar still fresh in many minds. After all, I'm sure they've seen the irate posts from TT owners and the "One Year Free Map" guarantee debacle.

Sounds like they are quietly releasing the new version which is scary similar to last year. At least when you go to Garmin's map update page http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp they have posted in not so large letters:

"The North America 2009 map update is scheduled for release in late April. Check back to order a map update for your product."

I did see in an ad for City Naviagator NA that it was listed as v2008.1
(Maybe it was EU maps that was listed as 2008.1, I do not find the ad)

Yep, the correct phrase is "Unfit for survival", and hopefully they will voluntarily remove themselves from the genetic pool.

I'm a new Nuvi owner since Christmas, we have two in our house, A 650 and a 260. Would I have to buy two CD's of the new maps or will one CD be able to update two Nuvi's?

Thanks

The question I have is why is 2008 no longer available? With over a month before the release they are not going to sell anymore maps?? If the response is "Don't want people who just bought 2008 complaining", where do you draw the line.. what about the guy who updated 1 day before? they may be on sale at bestbuys to sell out the stock. I'd hate to buy 2008 then see 2009 the next day for the same price!!

I checked a half dozen websites last night and they all still have V2008 for sale. Actually you can still buy it from Garmin as of today, see http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynav.jsp or http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynavnt.jsp (for the non NT version).

If I recall correctly you will need an separate update for each of the Nuvi's as each will need a separate unlock code. They may mean one DVD and just the purchase of an unlock code for the second unit.

Lets wait to see what the update policy is however, as you may be able to get the first update on the new units for free.
