I'm trying to help my friend save $275 from the Garmin reaper. His microdrive died. It was one of the later models that would not accept a CF card so I purchased another Cornice 4Gb drive and installed it but can't find a way to format and load new map data to the unit via USB. The drive has a ZIF ribbon cable and there's no way to connect to the computer via USB or otherwise.

After giving up on that, I just purchased a Cornice 2GB pen drive. As a test, I plan to load the map data from my 2610 GPS CF card onto the pen drive, then remove the micro drive from the pen drive housing and install it in the 2620.

Please let me know if I'm chasing my tail on this!

Thanks!!

if the 2 Gb drive works in your 2610 it will work in the 2620.
do jou need to format the drive? from now on you must see the 2620 as a 2610. Oh yes, the 4 Gb will not work in the street pilot.

Thanks for the reply!

My 2610 has a 2GB CF card. I copied the map info from it to my computer in hopes of transferring that onto a Cornice microdrive in my friends 2620. The 2620 does not have a card slot. It has a microdrive with a ZIF (zero insertion force) cable attached to it unlike the plug-in microdrives and CF cards.

I went onto eBay and found a 4GB Cornice ZIF microdrive but have no way of putting a FAT format on it. That's when I found one of Cornice's old 2GB pen drives. It has a USB connector and inside the housing is the same 2GB Cornice ZIF drive that the 2620 has. With the pen drive, I can at least connect it to my computer and copy the maps to it. I would then take the drive out of the pen drive housing and install into my friends 2620. Since their different serial numbered drives, the map data probably won't load but hopefully, the unit will recoginze the drive in hopes of putting a new map update on it for $75.00.

As a warning to anyone who is thinking about a 2620 unit, make sure it DOES NOT have the internal ZIF drive. My advice would be to stick with only the 2610. Also, a 4GB microdrive might work if you create a 2GB FAT partition instead of the full 4GB. I believe 2GB's is the max the 2610/20 can read.

Thanks again!

you can enter the 25-code of your friend in mapcource. and upload then to the drive. the 2gb is the max of all garmin models.

So it looks to me you were able to fix your friends Garmin Street pilot 2620 GPS
If you would be kind enough and write down the proper steps I need to do to fix mine I would appreciate it a lot. I did find a drive on eBay, it looks a lot like what you posted and I would like to know if so, how to proceed.
Maybe even the same seller. I was wondering if or when I buy that cornice drive from eBay, do I have to take it a part to install in the garmin. The one in the gps looks different from the eBay item.
This is what the screen shows when I hold a combination of the MENU-FIND buttons. Of course I still have the drive in the unit, but most likely crashed.

Romesz,

Wondering how the progress is going on your Garmin 2620.

I have the same problem you described and same diagnostic stats.

I just recieved a Cornice 2 GB microdrive and plan to do the replacement. I have taken the 2620 apart and removed the dead Cornice drive. I guess next step is to get the Garmin software on the drive.

Well I just got the cornice drive today. Probable from the same ebay source as you. Anyhow Just trying to copy the file on to the drive with the USB connector, but the mapsource is not able to see the cornice drive. So I'm trying to figure out how to transfer and what files. Once I'm finished with that I will take it a part and swap to two drives.
So far I only spent like 20 minutes on it, just came in here to see if anybody had anything to say about it.
Keep up the good work and keep me posted I will do the same.

I guess I have no progress to report of.
I got stock, I tried to copy the map files to the drive, then install it to the garmin. But a gps still wont recognized the drive. Last night I was playing, installed the new drive and lost all power to the gps, re installed the old drive, power is back but no maps file. I know the old drive is shot and the new drive is good, but cant get it to work with the gps.

So last night I did format the cornice drive while it was in the housing it arrived. I did a FAT format. After that I opened map source and sent the map data to a memory card. After that I copied that to the cornice drive. Now I swapped the old drive with the new in hoping that I will see magic. But still no map, and the diagnostic shows that I have the drive "removed" so the GPS can't see the new drive. I'm running out of ideas.
I even tried to connect the gps to my computer to see if it would try to load anything but no dice.

Just got a new idea, at least it is new to me

If I buy a Compactflash reader with a ZIF cable I think it might work, in stead of trying to format that bloody cornice drive to the GPS. Did any of you tried to go that route?

(3/24/08-- I have learned a lot in the recent weeks, but not enough to be able to fix the 2620 gps. Out of frustration I bought a 2610 with a CF card it only cost a hundred bucks. I will keep trying to fix the 2620 but the mean time I do have a unit that would not leave me stranded.

I was able to get a 1.5GB Cornice drive to work. I used the MPIO HS100 portable USB drive and was able to load the Maps from Mapsource onto the drive. I then remove the drive from the MPIO case and installed it into a 2620. Booted up the 2620 and it flashed onto the screen that the maps were locked. I then went to Garmin site and unlock the maps and entered the unlock code. The 2620 then recongized the maps and my 2620 was working again. The only problem was that I could not load the entire North America Maps on the 1.5GB drive. I also did tried a 2GB cornice (from ebay) and could not get it to work. This leads me to believe that not all 2GB cornice are the same.

audiqv8:

A little more info please. Where did you get the drive & how much?

How did the connections for the drive to the 2620 work?

When you load the maps isn't Mapsource looking for the serial no of the unit when it boots?

I own 3 Mapsource CD's, but they are all registered to units.

I can't see spending more than maybe $100 on this unit as working 2610's can be had for $150 or so.

Has anyone tried using a flash card? I see a small 3-4 prong socket next to the drive cable, anyone know what this is for?

Why can't I just disable the drive and run the unit through a Laptop with Garmin's free Nroute & Mapsource?

When I disconnected the drive the unit still powers down after it can't load the maps.

I assume the OS is built into the flash memoryof the unit, not the drive?

I purchased the drive on ebay, or you could do a google search for MPIO +HS100. Buy a copy of City Select North American and install it on your computer. Register your purchased copy of City Select North America and register the software using the serial number from the 2620, you will then get the unlock code for it. I used Mapsource to select the maps to be loaded, then select Transfer, Send to device and from the drop down menu select the drive letter which correspond to a (2GB SD card that I have in a card reader). After mapsosurce transfered the maps to the SD card, then copy the entire Garmin directory to the Cornice drive. Remove the MPIO drive from the usb case and install it in the 2620. When the 2620 boots up it will say that the maps are locked and do you want to unlock them. Use the unlock code that you obtained earlier from Garmin and use the touch screen to enter the code.

This work great with the MPIO HS100 drive. I was thinking taking the 2GB cornice drive from ebay and replacing the drive controller card with the card from the Garmin cornice drive.

A few more of us are starting to have problems with it shutting down and sometimes restarting by itself, any more updates on getting a Cornice drive to work or converting it ?

Had you checked FixMyGarmin.com? They do offer garmin repair service for all most garmin units in very affordable price, fast turn around time of three days and replace it with genuine parts. I think you should check it out as alternative, most of the time they are far cheaper than Garmin.
