National Park Service Sites Waypoint File

 New collection
Manager: Deerhead & dave817 Last Update: 03/30/2009 Number of POIs: Coverage: USA Available Format(s): gpx, xls Download Link: dave817_NPS_POIs.zip
The 8,xxx points were given to me by Tim Smith of the NPS Tim_Smith@nps.gov <Tim_Smith@nps.gov> and all he ask was that he be sent corrects as they are found. HOWEVER, this list would not be possible without the help of Dave Hansen <dave817@msn.com> who is a site regular and is king of the Harley POI list. I also have the Highest Points in each State which I'll also send. Can't seem to attach the waypoint file? Any help attaching a file would be appreciate. |

Hi Deerhead,
Sorry our collections cannot supply coordinates from another site without the agreement of the owner of these data.

Jean, I'm confused. I am the owner of these data. They were provide to me by Tim Smith and put in the correct format by Dave Hansen. Do you need the email docuentation for your files? Let me know? Thanks Robert |
Thanks, Robert |

Jean, I uploaded D:\Data IIs\Gpspassion\upload\D:\Documents and Settings\Dave\My Documents\GPS routes\NPS POIs\dave817_NPS_POIs.zip which is the data that Robert (Deerhead) described. Tim Smith emailed Robert an Excel sheet of coordinates and point descriptions for most of the National Park System Entrance Stations, Visitor Centers, Bathrooms, Picnic and Campgrounds, etc. I invested time to create .gpx files of each category. Between Robert and I, we would keep these updated and passed back to the NPS which appreciates volunteer contributions that make travel through our National Park System better for visitors. This data is not available on other websites, though the NPS may decide to make it available on their system someday. I supply .gpx format, but conversion to .csv is simple with GPXtoPOI recommended on your site under TOPIC_ID=38618, 4. Useful Tools. Thanks, Dave |

Jean, Dave's comments above are what I believe. And any user of the data is welcome to send the updates to Dave or I or even Tim Smith. I was actually on the Blue Ridge Parkway confirming the overlook locations when I dumped my bike this summer. I do long distance motorcycle riding and so do may others and this data is very much needed if for instance you're doing the Iron Butt Association National Parks Tour. Also for vacationers, fishermen, campers, and even BBQ'er. There are over 8,000 points for every use imaginable. If you're any kind of outdoors person the National Parks camp areas and trail heads will be very handy. ANY CORRECTIONS OR REVISION TO THESE WAYPOINTS ARE WELCOME. THE NPS WANT US TO HELP THEM (see above) CORRECT THEIR DATA SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO VISIT THESE SITES AND HELP KEEP THIS DATA AS ACCURATE AS IT CAN BE.

Thanks, Robert |

Hi,
Thanks for the explanations
On our server I found the following files:
dave817_NPS_POIs.zip NPS POIs.zip
These files are probably identical.

Jean, Yes, I believe they are. I opened the dave file and it is the same as he sent me, I just renamed my file. I know the community will appreciate these data. |
Thanks, Robert |

Jean, I would suggest in the index item 15 that you remove the reference to the National Parks, since they're included in index item 14 and not 15 AND place the Doe's resturants under the resturant index. That would leave item 15 Highest Peaks by State. Thanks for helping Dave and I out. Robert |
Thanks, Robert |

Robert,
Effectively my index isn’t correct.
In topic Nat'l Park Service, Highest Pts by State, & Doe's there are:
Nat'l Park Service, Highest Pts by State And Doe's restaurants
Could you create a specific topic for Doe's restaurants?
Could you also supply a short explanation for Doe's restaurants? Is there a website for these restaurants? What is a Doe's restaurant? Jean Team GpsPasSion - Moderator

Jean, Doe's resturants are famous in the South for their homestyle cooking and great catfish, steaks, etc. They used to be in Greenville MS only but they're expanding and if you like home style cooking they are THE place to eat. I will upload seperately the Doe's waypoints. http://www.doeseatplace.com/ I also reload the Highest Peaks By State for your single use topic filing. Robert |
Thanks, Robert |

| The coordinates given for BLRI 6248 are incorrect and will place the user in a location on the opposite side of the parkway from the headquarters with no ready access to the parkway. The only option (once they figure out where to go) is to backtrack. These coordinates N35 33.935 W82 29.260 were taken in the Visitor Parking lot where the vistor can then access the headquarters for the Blue Ridge Parkway and the new Regional Destination Center. I know those coordinates are correct, I work at the headquarters. |
