Is there a way of adding custom icons to Magellan's POI Editor?

No. You do know that there are some built-in ones that you can select ??

Yes, but they are so small I can't make sense of some of them. If you could add your own, you would know what the icons represented. Thanks.

I couldn't make sense of several of the icons in the POI editor either. This may sound stupid/simple but if you make a junk POI file with 10 categories and assign icons you can't figure out to each one, load it up into your GPS unit and take a look at the icons in there they show up a lot better. Do that a couple times and you can cover all the non-obvious icons. This is what I came up with:

Editor Icon - Description (Icon shown on a 4050)
1 (Jet) Airplane - Airport
2 Ferris Wheel - Amusement or Theme Park
3 ATM
4 Three Cars
5 Car with € (Euro)
6 Bank
7 Car with Gate & Light - Toll Booth
8 Bowling Ball & Pins - Recreation Center
9 Person @ Desk w/computer
10 Bus
11 Car with $
12 Slot Machine - Casino
13 Film Reel - Movie Theater
14 White Circle/Red Dot - City Center
15 Building - Public Building
16 Green, Red, Blue Person
17 Train Station
18 Lecture Hall
19 Scales
20 Purple Dot
21 Movie Camera
22 Cruise Ship & Dock
23 Gas Pump - Gas Station
24 Golf
25 Shopping Cart - Market (Shopping Bag)
26 Arch - Monument/Triumphal Arch
27 H - Health Services (Red Cross)
28 Hospital Bed - Hospital
29 Books - Library?
30 Anchor - Marina
31 Motorcycle with € Euro symbol
32 Building/Monument
33 Cube
34 Martini Bar/Club
35 P/Parking
36 P/Covered Parking
37 Park w/Picnic Table
38 Park & Ride
39 Police Car
40 Single Engine Plane - Local/Small Airport?
41 Bus Stop - Transportation
42 Forest
43 Forest w/House
44 Car w/Key - Car Rental
45 Plate/Knife/Fork - Restaurant
46 F/M People - Rest Area
47 Walking kids
48 Shopping Bag - Shopping
49 Ice Skating
50 Skiing
51 Green building? - Sports & Recreation (Sports balls)
52 Sport Arenas
53 Drama Masks - Entertainment
54 Camera - Tourist Attractions
55 Info Symbol
56 Diploma/Certificate - Education (Mortar Board & Sheep Skin)
57 Tow Truck
58 Wine - Winery
59 Tent - Camping
60 Clothes
61 Police & Fire Hats
62 Barber/Salon
63 AMA Symbol
64 House & Tree

I am trying to transfer custom POI's to a 1GB SD/MMC card that is connected to my PC via a USB card reader. I get an I/O error trying to read the memory card. I tried to recover bad sectors and recover system files, then format the card, but I get a message that it cannnot format the card. Help!

I bought a 1 gig X 4 pack of "Impact" brand cards that worked in the GPS, Built in card reader/writer on my laptop and my external (USB) Card reader/writer. Then I bought a 2 gig X 2 Pack Kingston Brand SD cards. I can read/write using GPS and external SD Card reader/writer but get errors using the built in reader/writer on my PC.

What I am getting at here is that there may be nothing wrong with the cards in question. They just may not be as compatable with your reader/writer. I under stand that SD is suppose to be a standard but not all are equal.

Try another brand of card or even another reader/writer. Try using the usb cable connection to the GPS and the Magellan Tools and assign the SD card for the POI's as apposed to internal memory. See if that works before writing off the card as bad. When I first had the errors on my PC I also tried reformatting - it appeared to work or it may have done the same thing - unable to format - but still didn't recognize the card. When the card (Kingston Brand) was placed in the GPS, the GPS was able to write and read from the card (Save and restore user data etc). When the card was placed in the external (Sandisk brand) usb reader/writer bought several years ago (before my laptop) I had no problems reading and writing to the card and it didn't have to be formatted and it could be read by the GPS.

Don't go higher than a 2 gig card, I believe the SDHD are not compatable and SD cards are cheap now a days - so are the readers. You may also want to try another USB port with the reader/writer as it was not mentioned that you had.

Just some food for thought.

Sahgps - very good idea. I too found it quite hard to identify within the editor. I thought the Gas Pump was a Beer Mug until I saw it on the GPS - I quickly changed over to the Martini Glass. Funny how the Red Dot shows up as a white dot with a Red dot in the middle just like the "City Centre" icon in the GPS. At least the Crossover/2200T-NA (even with the 2.36 update).

What I did was reboot with the USB card reader and SD card while still attached to the PC's USB port. I was able to reformat (not quick format) the SD card then transfer the data from the PC to the SD card via the USB card reader. I have a Magellan 3225 and Magellan's POI editor only allows transfers of .MGLN files to the SD card via a USB card reader.

I also noticed that while tapping into the 3225's OS that Custom POI's can't be loaded into the 3225 via the POI editor. Essentially, the USR Custom POI directory is useless.

I don't think Kinston SD's are very good. I've heard complaints about them.

That's correct Enhanced POI files do end with an extention of .mgln and can be loaded via the Magellan Tools program to the SD card via the GPS if you have no external card reader/writer.

By custom POI's do you mean a file that ends in .POI and not .mgln?
This thread is for "Enhanced POI" files. I believe there was another thread that talked about transferring a 6 million POI database to a 31xx unit.

Where are you getting the errors - on the external reader or in the GPS device?

Are we talking about saving one card or are all your cards having problems?

Have you tried another card or reader?
Have you tried the card in another device - such as a digital camera?

I was getting errors transferring from the PC to the USB card reader. I would get an I/O error on the only SD card I have. I'll have to buy other brands of SD cards.

Also, the custom files I tried to directly load into the 3225 ended with .MGLN when using the POI editor. There was a sub-directory called USER/CUSTOM but I was unable to transfer my custom files into this subdirectory.

With difficulty, I loaded my custom POI files onto one 1GB SD card via a USB reader using the POI editor. As you know, the POI editor does not save files as .POI and it would be nice that it did.

I already loaded the 6 million POI files ending with .POI with no problems.

The SD memory and USB reader were a package deal on EBAY.

Hello all, I just got a Magellan 3225 and was wondering something.
Many of you seem to be from Canada.
This may be something that is not possible, but can .mgln files be shared? (can they be dropped into the file system of the unit)
Has anyone built a Custom POI for the canadian content?
(such as Tim Hortons, Starbucks, Walmart, Costco, Future Shop, Lowes, etc)
Can to share? :)

I am not exactly sure what you are asking. If you are asking whether the xxx.mgln file that I create on my pc can be downloaded to an sd card for your GPS then the answer is yes. The content of the categories doesn't matter the file system is the same whether USA or Canada or anywhere in the world. It is the Lat/Long co-ordinates that determine where the location will be shown on the map.

By the way you will find all kinds of POI's for the Canadian side of the border. These are posted in the POI part of this GPSpassion web site. I believe I posted a link in the Tutorial above.
