*** Teaser video for modded Magellan Maestro 4040 *** *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLhkCxBkGfo ***
I think it is safe to say that most of techniques that have been discovered and shared in the past few weeks do work across entire Magellan Maestro line (the one with blue background and pretty icons).
With that in mind, I believe it is time to change name of the thread to "Unlocking Magellan Maestro series". This way we can cover more ground and attract more enthusiasts to join in.
Bla Bla Bla, but what has been done so far? Here it goes.
by humbletim Website: http://dedischew.net/softbutton/ Thread: This thread
SoftButton serves as a basic application and task manager component for Windows CE devices. It is especially suited for platforms lacking a system shell, keyboard, or hardware buttons.
This button is used to switch between Navigator.exe, TCPMP, FileManCE or any other app that you could be running on Maestro GPS device.
This is still BETA so any feedback posted here would be greatly appreciated.

Hidden system menu (very cool!)
by yarus Thread: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=102390
Fresh install of 2.36 release 3 Map placement optimization
Also, M2Launch and humbletim are potenialy on board to create a launcher program for starting Navigator, File Manager or TCPMC player. It would be way cool to see them chime in sometime soon.
If I missed anyone's achievement or someone want to share a trick or two please do not feel shy and jump right in.
Thank you all for trying to make "Maestro" worth its name. |

Well, there has been little activity on this topic because of coming holiday, I hope
Perhaps, we will reconvene again after New Year is here. Happy Holidays everyone!!!
PS: For all those "who played with their maestro until battery went low and now the unit does not flash no matter how long you charge the battery" --- Edit unit_id.dat file on both the unit and SDcard and add the following: Power status=HIGH, reboot and try the upgrade again.
Happy Holidays! |

yarus, how would you like helping me create a site/community for the hacking/expansion of the magellan masstro series of GPS devices?
I have already purchased the domain mmhack.org. |

Hi yarus -- I didn't catch this topic until just now. I'll reply here moving forward but here's the latest:

FYI -- here's my stab at a launcher tool / task manager:
http://dedischew.net/softbutton/
It uses a small "Always on Top" icon to allow switching back and forth between running applications.
If you are shadowing an app file (such as Navigator.exe), be sure to start the original exe right away for best results.
Happy Holidays, -Tim

Hi,
So far looks awesome. I wish I could custom position the button by dragging it, but it is indeed a great program. I love the "run" feature!!!
I'll be testing it and I will post a video of my hacked 4040 before new year.
PS: Why do you think TCPMP and FileManCE does not have the "x" symbol in top right "app close" square, but your app does?
Thank you for actually making it.

Glad to hear it's working for you -- I didn't really think about positioning until last minute. Would specifying coordinates via an INI file be sufficient? I have that working internally but drag is also a possibility.
I've also looked at using explorer.exe and other MS CE shell components from another device, but those aren't technically redistributeable, so I'll continue a bit more with SoftButton.

One option is to rename an existing EXE that you know will get launched, and then substitute softbutton.exe in its place. I've started referring to this as EXE shadowing and a future version of Soft Button should make it easier to do. On the 3100, Navigator.exe or TSShell.exe are good candidates.
For example, if you rename Navigator.exe to _Navigator.exe, then copy softbutton.exe to TFAB/APP/Navigator.exe, it should be run as the device boots and you can start the original _Navigator.exe using the Run... command.
Please read dgoeken's instructions at http://goeken.homedns.org/Weather/Magellan3100/Magellan.htm and backup at least your APP folder before attempting anything.

OK, got it. I did this with FileManCE... I wasn't sure whar exe shadowing was. Thanks!
BTW... I have a nice little folder on my HDD with the entire 4040's file system and data there. |

What I've been doing on my 3225 is instead of replacing the Navigator.EXE:
Connect the GPS to your USB cable.
Create a \APP\Softbutton directory and put the softbutton.exe file into it.
Edit the \APP\Unit.xml and add the following application section:
<Application ID="176">
<FileName>softbutton.exe</FileName>
<Path>\HDD\App\softbutton\</Path>
<Bitmap>32x32x16.bmp</Bitmap>
<Version>
<Major>0</Major>
<Minor>1</Minor>
<Internal>0</Internal>
<Build>0</Build>
</Version>
</Application>
Save the file and then edit \APP\Startup.xml to look like the following:
<Shell>
<Application ID="176" />
</Shell>
This will cause the mgnQCS.exe file (which is autorun on startup) to run application 176, which you have configured to be the softbutton.exe program. It keeps you from having to change file names. |

Awesome -- is this documented anywhere or was it found through R&D? Very Cool! -Tim |
