I was wondering does anyone know if I can use the Navigon Software on a Omnitech GPS that I bought from Staples for $169.99. I know the Navigon 7100 has a 4.3" LCD and the Omnitech also has a 4.3" LCD and they both use the SIRF III receiver.
Does anyone have any ideas? I would love to tinker with this Omnitech GPS a little. I want to see if I can get to use the software from Navigon on my Omnitech, so I can use the "Reality View" that the Navigon has. That would be cool. Then I could Customize the Navigon Interface with new skins and tweaks. There is barely nothing about the Omnitech GPS on this Forum and so much about the Navigon.
I'm really wondering if it can be done. That would be so cool. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. |

Hey Omnitechno, What is the spec's on that unit? To answer your question, I would need to know:
CPU speed, Memory, Resolution, Win CE version, Can you ActiveSync with a PC?.

| As to the original question, since the Navigon software can't be bought separately the answer is a clear no. |

gps_addicted, here are the answers to your question (specs from the website): http://www.navsupport.net/gps/15223/product.html
CPU - Freescale MX21 266MHz 32bit microprocessor Internal Memory - SDRAM 64MB, NOR Flash 8MB,©zNAND Flash 64MB (option)©{
Display - 4.3" (480x272) color TFT LCD touch screen display LED Indications 16.7M colors
Operation System - Windows CE .net 4.2
ActiveSync - Yes, I can activeSync and see all the files.
I hope this helps. Also, would I be able to just load the WinCE OS upon powering up instead of it trying to always load the GPS software automatically? I would like to maybe watch movies, play MP3's and do other stuff on this GPS system if I can, while at the same time also be able to use the GPS program when I need it. |

So it cant be done I guess.
So is there anything I can do on this Omnitech GPS system with the WinCE 4.2 software (SUCH AS WATCH MOVIES OR PLAY mp3'S) or should I just return it and get the Navigon 2100 for $150.00? I dont really want a smaller screen but I will if it means more features and stuff.
Also does anyone know where I can buy the Navigon 2100t, or do they not sell it anymore and just sell the 2100 only? |

Well, if you can activeSync to a PC, then in theory, you should be able to install additional software that are legally obtained. For multi-media application, try the freeware TCPMP. It runs on WINCE.
To boot the device to the Window desktop, try renaming a file called explorer.exe to the name of the GPS executable file using activesync. Make sure you do not delete any files when doing this. If you're not comfortable working or trouble shooting computers, I don't recommend doing it at all. When you start deleting files, you could turn your GPS into a very expensive door stopper.
Good luck. |

Oh man, if the PDA version had reality view, I'd buy that in a second to test it out!
I highly doubt the Navigon software on the Navgion 21XXX/71XX would run on another "pocket pc", I'm sure they locked the software to the hardware id of the unit to prevent piracy.
Although, since it's on an SD card (or do I have it wrong?)...it wouldn't hurt to pop it into say a Mio 310x and see if it runs (if the software is on the sd card as well). After all Garmin does this, all the software is on the SD card and you can bring it from unit to unit. |

gps_addicted Thanks for your help. I have unlocked the GPS and got into the OS but since this has WinCE .NET 4.2 "Core", it is very limited to what I can do (almost nothing, except putting TomTom Navigator 6 on it). I really wanted to put a music player/video player on there but I dont think it's capable of doing it. Since this is the "Core" WinCE 4.2, I really don't know if anything can be done with this OS. This OS looks so stripped down, that its almost worthless. I have googled everything I can about Win CE .NET 4.2 Core and can't really find anything about it as far as Mods go.
I am probably going to return this Omnitech GPS and get one that has Multimedia Capabilities with Bluetooth. Maybe I'll get the Navigon 2100 and play with it, since there is so much that can be done to it on this forum.
If anybody has been able to do anything with this Win CE .NET 4.2 Core OS, please let me know so I can further tinkle with it. |

Don't be fool by the OS. Most "all-in-one" gps unit use WinCE, including the infamous Mio 310. Take a look at that forum and you see what WINCE is capable off. With a little hack, you can install a number of applications build for the WM os. The Omnitech is no exception. You can install TCPMP as your media player. It plays avi, jpeg, and mp3s. I've heard some people installing dictionary, calculator, Calendar, Financial tracking application to name just a few. You just have to do a bit of research to get your application working. To me, that's half the fun. Plug and play is convenient but is quite boring.
Have fun.

I found a forum site with discussion about the Omnitech GPS made for Staples. You will need to sign up, but it's free. Tech Smart Tips http://www.techsmarttips.com/forum
They have the TCPMP core player installed see picture here

Just to add to this, you can also hack it for Chinese interface. You can't read anything, but the pictures are good enough to let you know whats what. Also, the navigation part is still played by Destinator 7 in English, so that's not a problem. The Chinese interface adds a WMV player, MP3 player, Photo viewer, and 2 games.

Top Gear :D Can be expanded to full screen viewing.
