Starting a new thread for GPS/DVD Navigation Boxes running Windows CE 4.2

Hacking Windows CE 4.2 in a Navigation Box / All in one GPS/DVD/Radio/TV

These units ship from China and are distributed under differing brand names and often no name. Ebay is a popular market for these units.

Usually ships with Route66. Some sellers ship with TomTom or Destinator

Windows CE 4.2 is not readily accessible.

Here is a hack that will help you on the way

Step 1

Load SD card with

1. autorun.exe and toolhelp.dll – an explorer

(thanks http://www.11k.org/ and Autorun (launch explorer by anthema))

2. jotkbd.exe – an onscreen keyboard

(thanks http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=72835&whichpage=2 and http://www.yetanotherhomepage.com/j7xx/files/jotkbd.zip

With the SD card removed from the Navigation SD slot the unit will display a message like

Can’t find navigation software.

Select OK
Select Options
Select Navi Opt
Select Navigation Path
You will see that the NandFlash folder is the only accessible folder
However Nandflash folder cannot be explored
Insert SD card into Navigation SD slot
Change navigation path to Autorun.exe (the explorer)
Select OK
Close Settings
Select Navigation

Congratulations – you are now exploring Windows Ce 4.2 in Chinese unfortunately
Most folders you will not be able to explore – not sure of the reason but I think it relates to the presence of a desktop.ini file which hides the contents.
You now can start new applications that you put on the SD card like jotkbd.exe (keyboard)

Here is what I did with OziexplorerCE

Preloaded an Oziexplorer folder with an unpacked (not .cab) version of OziexplorerCe

Instructions:

Get the zipped file from http://members.optusnet.com.au/~jt_mobile/OziExplorerCE%20v1.12.3e3%20 Extracted%20files .zip

(thanks OZICe Yahoo group)

Unzip delete the OziExplorerCE.exe files with the exception of OziExplorerCE (Handheld_300 arm).exe

Now start OziExplorerCE (Handheld_300 arm).exe

If you have a registered copy of OziexplorerCe enter serial on the jotkbd.exe keyboard

With or without the serial it’s interesting to learn a little more about the file structure of the Windows CE 4.2 directories.

Configure the GPS port

File
Configuration
NMEA (GPS)
Select Com2 as GPS communications port

With or without the serial it’s interesting to learn a little more about the file structure of the Windows CE 4.2 directories.

Do that by
File
Configuration
Map & Data Files
\Windows
Open up some folders

There is that desktop.ini file that I mentioned earlier – I think it hides the folder contents

Unresolved Issues that I now need help with

1. Shutdown will lose the serial requiring re entering serial – Why is that please?

first solution - mortscript which contains your serial - see below

second solution - use ally55 workaround using restuner which edits the .exe file see http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=99792

best solution - mortscript with gihobj.dll file - see below

2. Cannot load .cab files – I see wceload.exe is present in the windows folder – Isn’t that the cab loader? Why can’t I double click a .cab file on the SD card?

ally55 found solution - see below

"1 Every time you restart go to explorer desktop >>view>>
>>option advavance setting uncheck the boxes, do this every time you need to
install something."

3. OziExplorer Ce won’t start ECW files – even if I install ECW.dll in the windows directory and the SD root I am told that ECW.dll could not be found or loaded

4. like to load TomTom

5. like to have another explorer than explorer by anthema - one that shows "hidden files"

6. like to show Chinese Ce 4.2 in English

Thanks for sharing, so this is an in-dash system it seems ? The "hacking" process is indeed different since you can't connect it to a computer.

How do the stock features work, DVD, TV, Radio, etc...Does the TV-Out still work when you access WinCE ? Not sure how you would use it though.

Is the resolutoin 480x272 like on the 4.3" AIOs ?

The resolution in gps boxes that are built in is 480x272 or 480x234
others that can be control via ir remote and have video out a 320x240 software is ok

Reimond, thanks for that. Have you managed to get Total Commander explorer to run using WinCE CAB manager to extract files to SD card?

The big ambition is to

1. change the os language from Chinese to English. I guess that could be as easy as a few registry settings. and

2.From there .cab instals would function best. I guess .cab instals .dll files to the windows directory. In the present locked state this does not appear to happen.

Attila
What`s the problem if you need explorer.exe or route66 navigation
to run
put that in your sdcard

Where is says Nandflash\autorun.exe

click on the brown box to the right follow it to your storage card and then double click on explorer.exe

Now \storagecard\explorer.exe ok and close the next panel it is not the main panel they look similar

now click navigation

thanks for the 2 finger solution - works well - better than the mortscript solution for this particular unit

can you open .ecw files on your unit?

I have learnt - from exploring the windows unit that this is an arm processor so .ecw files should open - but where to put the ecw.dll file it asks for?

I have also learnt that this is a Mesada unit as well and the name Worldnav6200 features as well?

Hi ally55,

thank's for your reply, so I try again it, but the problem is still exist.

I can choise the autorun.exe on SD card.
But when I closed the navi opt window then the pathc is go back to original status (\nand\flash\autorun.exe).

When I click on "Navigation" icon I get the next message "No correct SDCARD found!..

http://freemail.hu/fototar/kep.jspv?mediaID=3462703

Maybe I make something wrong...

Please tell me
