Hello, I am a little reluctant to start another topic, when it might seem that what I am about to post belongs in a thread that exists and is sticky. But in reading that thread, I have the feeling that what I am posting about is somehow different in spirit from that thread in a fundamental way. Admins, feel free to graft it there if you disagree.

Since getting my GPS receiver last week, I have been looking for solutions that are Free, in the sense that I can view, learn from, and improve the source code and freely share that knowledge with others. There is very stimulating activity in other parts of this board decoding protocols and modifying hardware to open up the full knowledge and potential of various devices and of GPS in general. I think free software is uniquely compatible with this engaged spirit and I would hope people might consider supporting or joining projects related to mapping that have a free quality. To that end, here is a list of what I have found so far:

Linux:
GpsDrive
http://www.gpsdrive.de/
see fink instructions for OSX:
http://lists.gpsdrivers.org/pipermail/gpsdrive/2007-June/000136.html

PalmOS:
GPS4Palm
http://gps4palm.sourceforge.net/

Other:
Movemap3D

Java:
ChartPlotter

GPSylon
http://www.tegmento.org/gpsylon/

EPS

Qt:
QtGPS

Have I missed anything?

Palm T3, iTrek Z1, Gentoo Linux PowerPC

Here is a list I made of (mostly free) software: http://activityworkshop.net/gps/gpslinks.html
and here are much larger lists of links (not from me) split up into platforms:
windows: http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfw.html
linux/mac: http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfwmaclinuxunix.html
multiplatform: http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfwmobile.html

Hope that helps!
