Have been playing around with Garmin Mobile PC. It's very similar to the Nuvi interface, but has some settings I wish my Nuvis had. You have more control over how the map is displayed (choose text size and visibility for different map features, favorites, etc). It still doesn't quite offer all the options of the old StreetPilot 26x0 series, but falls somewhere in between it and the Nuvi.

After downloading you will have a file named GarminMobilePC_50060.exe. Instead of double-clicking to install, change the extension to .rar. You will need a program which can open .rar files - I used the free trial of WinRAR. After opening the archive, double click MAIN.msi and the program will be installed. The first time you launch it will ask if you have an installation code or if you want a 15 day free trial. Select the trial version and the software registers itself at Garmin.com and tells you when it will expire.
The trial won't have any maps, so you will need to install those yourself. If you leave MobilePC running and start mapsource you can install maps using the Send to Device command - MobilePC shows up as a device - very clever. You can also directly copy a gmapsupp.img file to the MobilePC program folder.
I was hoping that this program might be an easy way to look at Garmin maps I'm creating without the bother of transfering my Nuvi and restarting it. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to understand the TYP files I need to use (custom types of map features), but it does display the maps. The Garmin US Topo maps looked pretty similar to the way they would on my Nuvi, with a few little glitches. It actually showed DEM shading when I zoomed out to the 1.2 mile level with the US Topo, but the display of contour lines was so coarse that it didn't look very good.
The Ibycus USA maps looked pretty good. It's a novelty to see the maps on a 23" monitor; you can see a large area of the map this way, but the detail levels correspond to what you'd see on a nuvi at the same zoom levels. So all the lines on the map are pretty "fat" and don't translate well to a big screen. I'm sure the City Navigator maps would look good and the system is obviously designed around them.
I don't have a dedicated USB GPS, so I tried using it with both a GPSMap 60csx and an Oregon 400t. In both cases the software found the GPS and correctly identified it, but without a unit ID. The program then complained it couldn't authenticate a Garmin GPS. But it still correctly showed my position on the map and showed the signal level on the compass screen. Evidently you need to actually have the correct Garmin receiver for it to work properly. Not sure since I was at my desk at home and didn't have a routable map installed anyway.
So I don't really plan to buy the full version, but it was fun to play with, and I wish some of the software features would find their way into Garmin's dedicated units |

Jim, look at the Viliv units. They have screen sizes you are looking for, and people do use them with Garmin Mobile PC (and other PC GPS software, too). |

I see that the Fujitsu LifeBook U820 comes with Garmin Mobile PC pre-installed on it. Is this the only computer that comes with Garmin Mobile PC pre-installed? Not that it is that difficult to install Garmin Mobile PC, but I did find it interesting, nevertheless. I would like to find a UMPC with a screen size of somewhere between 5 and 7 inches to use with Garmin Mobile. Does anybody have any suggestions on a device like that for under $500? |

I have now been using my x20 Bundle on my Samsung Q1 Tablet PC for over 1 month and in Europe with no problems.
I now want to install other maps but i'm told by garmin that if I want other maps I have to purchase new ones from them.
Question, Can I downlod additional maps from MapSource, which I have installed on my other garming unit?
If yes can someone give the the detailed procedure?.I will appreciate it very much as maps are not that cheap and I have them already.
I did read somewhere that someone has done this but i'm not sure if it was on the demo map or unlocked.
Forgot to say that I have tried downloading maps from MapSource to my mobile pc.
I can see my mobile PC but when I clic transfer I get Access Denided.
Any suggestions? I am using the latest Mapsource software because I had problems with Vista. |

This is a follow-up.
I tried Garmin's Mobile PC on a Motion Computing J3400 which is a Tablet PC with an Intel® Core™2 Duo processor SU9400 running at 1.4GHz, 4GB of RAM and a 64GB solid state drive (SSD). Motion claims that their "View Anywhere" display has the best available sunlight readability. The operating system is Windows 7.
Garmin's Mobile PC software runs on this platform without problems and the map displays are gorgeous. The only downside is that Contacts searching is still to slow to be usable. I had hoped that the faster hardware might resolve the problem, but this is not the case. |

Yes, Garmin Mobile PC is compatible with the POIs created by POI-Loader, you can even cut and past poi.gpi files created on an memory card by placing them in the \poi folder. |

I recently tried Garmin Mobile PC running on a Lifebook P1510D tablet PC. The program generally runs properly and the map displays are excellent.
There are, however, some major problems. Mobile PC is available in two versions: one with and one without a Garmin GPS receiver. The version with the receiver can only be used with this(?) Garmin receiver. Unfortunately, the GPS receiver has very poor signal sensitivity.
The software only version will work with a number of "third party" GPS receivers one of which is the Globalsat 737 Bluetooth.
Route computing is slow, but is usable.
The worst problems concern using "Contacts" or custom POI sets for navigation. "Contacts" in the Outlook section of Microsoft Office 2007 is correctly recognized by Mobile PC, but each search takes minutes and the feature is too slow to be usable. This was tested with a 3000 entry database. "Contacts" itself has no problems rapidly searching the same database.
An alternate approach might be to use custom POI sets. There is no documentation included with with Mobile PC that describes how to do this. It is, however, possible to create the POIs with third party software and to install the POIs using a "POILoaderforWindows" from Garmin. This method has not been tested at this time.

I purchased the Garmin Mobile PC software and model 20X USB connected GPS receiver package and, unfortunately, had to return it to Garmin the same day.
The "20X" receiver had extremely poor sensitivity. It received only two satellites and had no satisfactory fix from the same location at which a Globalsat GPS receiver promptly received 7 satellites and had an excellent position fix.
For some unknown reason, Garmin has configured the systems so that the package versions will only work with one specific Garmin GPS. The "software only" version is supposed to work with some third party GPS receivers.

eliac2005 -- If it were me, I would order the Garmin Mobile PC bundled version for Europe if you want to install the software on more than one PC, since the software is "tied" to the GPS unit supplied in the bundle and not to the PCs the software is installed on. The bundled version CAN be installed on more than one PC. I own the software only version of Garmin Mobile PC (North America version). In this "software only" version, the supplied Garmin unlocking code is "tied" to the software and the PC it is installed on and not the GPS unit. It CANNOT be installed on more than one PC. The main advantage of the software only version is that it is cheaper if you already own a good Bluetooth or USB GPS unit. |

Great information, just when I need it.
I have been thinking about buying the GPS 18X bundle in Europe for some time and am now convinced it works.(I have opted for the bundle just to make sure I don't run into problems.)
I use other garmin compatible maps like tracks4australia & tracks4africa they both work on my Garmin iQUEM5 will I be able to navigate the same way with this antenna? From what I read the interface is that of the NUVI & Street Pilot does this mean that I will not have my iQUE interface?
Can the software be installed on more than one PC or is limited to one only? Does it come with unlocking codes that have to be registered same as all Garmins GP'S? |

I recently purchased the Garmin Mobile PC from Semsons. I installed it on my Asus HE1000 netbook PC and also I am also using my old reliable GlobalSat BT338 Bluetooth GPS unit with it. It works flawlessly!! I highly recommend this combo for use with the current crop of netbooks.
For use in my vehicle (2008 Scion xB), I am using a RAM vehicle mount, the "RAM No-Drill vehicle laptop mount" and their "Tough Tray II" which is properly sized for a netbook. This setup is solidly and quickly installed using the two front passenger seat bolts. |

Perhaps the simplest mounting solution for your small U820 laptop would be the double-suction cup mount and the new Tough Tray II by RAM Mount. |

I got a Fujitsu U820 for Christmas this year and have played with the Mobile PC software a bit. It works well and is quite a nice bit of GPS software. It's not a regular use GPS system for me, though, because I have no way to mount the device at a comfortable viewing angle and looking down at it sitting on the passenger seat is not a great solution. I haven't invested much effort in trying, though, as I have an AIO already in my vehicle and I bought the U820 for the other things it does. |
