I've started looking for a replacement for my Nuvi 750, and I particularly like the high-resolution screen on the 3760/3790. Does either of them support track logs? I've read that the 3790 will send track log information to Garmin for the trafficTrends data.

If the 3760/3790 does not have them, which current Nuvi units do?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,
I have a 3790 and have 3 questions:

1) In RAW Logger mode are the coordinates stored in 2D or 3D?
2) Does the automatic trip logger store 2D or 3D points and if I place the unit in pedestrian mode, will the stored coordinates not be snapped to road locations?
3) The time interval between stored points is 1 second in RAW Logger mode; What is it for the TRIP LOG mode?

Thanks,

Mitch

Yes, I know the limitation of the 37XX as far as custom routes are concerned. I don't use the 3790 to repeat my trip at a later date, although I can see what your saying. All I was pointing out was that for me the track log works fine because I use it as a record of where I've been. I would certainly like the custom route support so that I could create a route in Mapsource well in advance and then load it on the Nuvi, drive it, and have the track log as the record of that trip.

Rick, the device does not support custom routes. You cannot import a gpx file created with mapsource into any of the 37xx series devices. Some time back, either via blog, or a faq on garmin's site, this functionality was going to be added by way of firmware update by Q1 2011. Since then, that idea has been scraped, and if they do offer this, it will be in a new unit model altogether.

I use the gps primarily on my motorcycle. Track logs are great when i'm following someone on a new road and want to repeat this later. Custom routes are a necessity because most of our rides are neither fastest nor shortest :).

Not exactly sure what your mean but the track log is great for keeping a record of your journeys. You can save them visually in lots of different places as well, like Google, Streets&Trips Mapsource or Basecamp.

Much good is the track log when the device itself can't do custom (mapsource) generated routes.

Thanks, Rick, I've stuck that in my Amazon wish list. Good catch on the lower price too!

I use this one. Works great for me:

$5 cheaper at Amazon.com:

Thanks, everyone! My 750 chose yesterday to die (totally unresponsive, not recognized on PC, nothing), so I went out and bought a 3790LMT. The tracks work exactly like they did on the 750, so I'm a happy camper.

Now that I have the 3790, can anyone suggest a case that fits well? Obviously a generic 4.3" GPS case will be much too thick.

The 3790 and other newer models also have the "hidden track log" or as it's called on the device "diagnostic logging". This is turned on by pressing the speedometer on the speedo screen for 5+ second and setting it up on the screen that follow. The logs are saved in the Logs folder on the Nuvi, one for each time you turned the Nuvi on and containing the track until it was turned off. You can tell when this type of log is active as there is a 'counter' placed on the map screen.

All current nuvi models have the track log function. You cannot even turn it off, it's always recording track. The only user controls are hiding/showing the log and clearing it. On the 3790, when the track log is filled, it is automatically archived in a folder. I think this is a feature that Garmin has added to a number of models with the newer firmware. It's probably being used to harvest trafficTrends data, like you mentioned above.

Yes you'd have to copy it manually, Mapsource will see the automatic logged data though.

Thanks! I never knew about the hidden track logs.

If I choose .gpx mode, will MapSource see it when I transfer data from the GPS? Or do I need to manually copy it to the PC?

Yes, both the internal track log (automatic) like all the nuvis and the raw logger (every second), for more on the raw logger, joins this topic -> http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?topic_id=98909
