UPDATED 20110108 : New tracker firmware version shown at CES 2011, see details on page 12.
UPDATED 20101014 and 20101118 : nuvi 1695 now shipping, first user reviews on page 4 and here on page 10.
Anyone heard anything about this? "A new nuvi is coming down the highway, and it means business. Navigational business. It's the Garmin nuvi 1695, a connected GPS device that offers Bluetooth and GSM, much like the 1690 before it. In fact, it's not entirely clear what makes this different from the last year's 1690, but GPSTracklog speculates this will offer Garmin's traffic trends feature also found in the 3700, augmented by real-time updates from every other 1695 user similarly stuck in traffic. Seems like a good guess to us, but we're of course more curious about how much the thing will cost -- $500 for the 1690 when it was new was a bit of a bitter pill to swallow."

My twelve months of free nuLink! services turned into fourteen months before I was asked to renew. The asking price was supposed to be $5.00 each month but the $49.99 I paid for a year divides out to $4.16 each month. |

Shouldn't be a problem to delete the sum file. It's a left over from a map update. I've deleted it from my 3790 but if you are concerned just rename the file extension until your sure there are no bad affects.
All old JV files can also be deleted, but again a rename will let you recover an old file if you want or need to. |

When I first installed v2.90 there were phantom camera alerts showing on the screen (there are no cameras around here). But all it took was a reboot (not even a reset) to clear that up.
I had not been having problem with JV, but I do notice that there are two JV files in the dot-system folder, one pretty small and older; the other the latest one referenced in other topics here. Plus there's a dot-sum JV file. Does anyone know if I should erase the older file?

Garmin has released firmware version 2.80 for the 1695.
The change log looks like this:
Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.80:
* Fixed an error that caused PhotoReal Junction View files to not load during map updates.
* Improved display of safety camera scout information.

Yes, all nuLink features are working fine except for Google Search. The unit is registered with Garmin. I e-mailed Garmin and I think they confirmed I should see a Google Search icon in the Where To?->Points of Interest page. Still waiting to hear back from them on a possible solution.
May need to do a hard reset, though. |

Otaku, if you go to the "Where to?" page, are you receiving the nuLink! (AT&T) signal? Did you register with Garmin? |

I have no idea how to access the Google connected search on the nuLink 1695. It's nowhere. A normal Local Search only gives me results from Garmin, with no tabs to switch between Google and Garmin results as I've seen in screen shots. I swear one of the first times I turned the unit on I saw an icon in one of the menus specifically for a Google search function, but that icon is long gone.
Has anyone else seen this? Do I just not know how to use it right? I swear I've RTFM and it says to do a Local Search and you should receive Google results with a tab to switch to Garmin results.

I must say performance of the 1695 far exceeded my expectations, especially after reading some of the reports here. I was a bit nervous of my purchase. Screen redraws, touch sensitivity, OS speed, volume (it's loud!), everything far exceeded my old nuvi 785T. So far, so good. It got me to work well this morning.
The triangulation first time shouldn't take more than a few minutes. Just go to a parking lot and sit in the back of the lot and listen to music :) It won't take long

Real quick question here:
I work on the coast in a 2G only area (relatively rural). As I cross a river into the "mainland" 3G usually pops up. For lunch today, I noticed there was no weather icon on the map screen. During lunch, I tried to do a search using Google search but never saw any Google search results, only the Garmin search results (and there were no tabs to flip between Garmin/Google results like I've seen in screenshots). Has anyone seen this behavior before? Are certain features restricted in 2G mode?
I crossed into the mainland 3G coverage area briefly afterwards, and the weather icon popped up on the map screen. I wasn't in the area long enough to try the search again, as I was driving. Once on my map screen, the weather icon stayed there (but the animations would not load when I clicked on it).
I don't recall seeing any posts about the unit acting differently in 2G vs 3G coverage areas, so I wanted to see if this is "normal."

If you've had a fix then yes, the select locale and language screens will (should!) go away. |

I was just posting to confirm that the 1695 does appear to have some sort of cell site triangulation protocol, similar to that of smartphones and the way they behave when the GPS is disabled. The 1695 appears able to get rough location information based solely on the cell towers it uses for nuLink.
I'm hoping now that I've gotten a fix (on my morning commute) the annoying select locale and language screens will go away.

Apologies, misunderstood what you were saying. If it's never recived a fix yet then you need to get it somewhere where it can get a clear view of the sky, as it needs to establish where all the satellites are that it can see. Once it's done that its behaviour should be less erratic. |

No, it's not popping up to my location, and like I said it's never received a fix yet. Instead, it jumps me around the map near where I believe the cell tower is. Is showing a few miles from where I truly am. |
