Original message: Garmin has as of today in the USA released their iPhone application at $39.99 USA. Seems to be full featured including traffic. However no maps, download as you plan and go. traffic seems to be based on "FM type coverage" based on the list of available markets.[ed]

Have they caught up to Navigon in features?

Not sure about the check-in features since the apps. for those social networks also do the same.

Hard to keep track of the feature lists of the different apps but nice that they're always adding new features.

-Check-In On Arrival feature makes it easy to post your location and status update to your favorite social network

-Create a personalized navigation experience by downloading free voices and vehicles from the Garmin Garage

-Trip Planner lets you plan before you travel, allowing you to create, edit, and save multiple routes

-Add multiple stops to your route while you’re on the go with Via Points. Just look up a new destination, press Go, and add it to your active route

-Quickly modify your route to avoid unexpected roadblocks and emerging traffic conditions using the Detour feature

Haven't seen this mentioned before and keep meaning to but I have seen a problem, not a huge deal for me but may be to others. When you pick a place to go and the route preference screen pops up to show faster time and shorter distance info the time is always way off. Example I put in a place and for faster time it says 25 miles-8hr 10 min and shorter distance says 24 miles-8 hr 12 min. Even a really short distance is way off like a gas station 2.3 miles away says it will take 46 minutes. Anyone else see this problem?

v6.5.7 is out, fixes audio prompts that were broken in iOS 4.3 apparently. Maybe some other tweeks, just updated and will check it out in the next few days.

Hadn't thought of that either, won't happen too often hopefully!

By the way, they recently pushed a v6.5.5 update:

What's New in Version 6.5.5
•Restored voice instructions over bluetooth and headphones
•Further improved car pool lane avoidance

Another problem is when their map server is down - no maps. I could get to the web site via safari but the iphone app showed no maps or traffic :-(

I expected no maps if I did not have a WiFi or 3G connection, but didn't think about the other end.
gpspassion Posted - 10 févr. 2011 : 01:44:08
Yep and when I asked at CES they didn't have any firm plans for anything else at that point.

@caryrae - ok that makes sense and yes SP iPhone hasn't been designed to be used to navigate without a route, 3D would help with that, might come later.

To me it's harder to read street names when not following a route, looks just like a picture of yours on the 1st page. When following a route the street names are bigger and much easier to read. Yeah when not following a route it's only 2D. I don't have the same problem on with the Navigon, Magellan, or Map app on my iPhone 4.
gpspassion Posted - 10 févr. 2011 : 00:27:00
Yes, saw that late last night and updated, will test on the road this week.

Were you able to sort your legibility problem of the map without a route? As far as I can tell we're limited to the 2D display when there is no route.
caryrae Posted - 09 févr. 2011 : 20:34:08
There is an update 6.5.4, from the info it seems to fix a few of the other problems people are having.

What's New in Version 6.5.4

•Improved iPod playlist integration
•Music fades for voice directions instead of pausing/resuming
•Improved interaction with music streaming services and voice directions
•Tap turn arrow to hear most recent voice direction again
•Choose home address from contacts
•Added VoiceOver accessibility support
•Fixed bug related to avoiding car pool lanes
•Corrected "Doctor" vs. "Drive" bug
•Minor bug fixes

@caryrae - So I checked the map without a route and...it can only be viewed in 2D as far as I can tell, and if you zoom in far enough the street names are quite legible. Can you clarify the problem you're seeing with a screenshot?
