UPDATED 20100318 : the nuvi 1xxx series have added capabilities, see details on page 3

+ denotes updated items 12/18/2008

* Note that this guide was written specifically for the nuvi 7x0/7x5 series but may also work on other nuvi units as well as other non-nuvi units such as the Colorado, Oregon and other Garmin hand-helds that have a disk-based file system.

You can have various mapsets loaded on your nuvi...not just the basemap and detail map. These mapsets all reside in the x:/Garmin folder on both the nuvi drive and the SD Card drive. The nuvi 7x0 can access up to six different mapsets (*one* on the SD Card). The nuvi 7x5 can access up to nine different mapsets (*one* on the SD Card)

Example:

Mapset 1. City Navigator North America NT 2009 = nuvi drive main detail mapset (gmapprom.img)
Mapset 2. City Navigator Mexico NT 2008 = nuvi drive OEM detailed mapset (gmapoem.img)
Mapset 3. US Topo 2008 = nuvi drive supplemental detailed mapset (gmapsupp.img)
Mapset 4. City Navigator Europe NT 2009 = SD Card drive supplemental mapset (gmapsupp.img)
Mapset 5. nuvi drive Basemap (gmapbmap.img)

*Note: Before fiddling with mapsets, make a backup of them first, especially gmapprom.img as this is your main detailed mapset.

Here's a list of the nuvi 7x0 & 7x5's mapset names & their relationship with the nuvi
drive/SD Card:

Nuvi map naming convention
------------------------------------
1. gmapprom.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only, (primary mapset)

2. gmapprom1.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (secondary mapset) example: North American / European units

3. gmapsupp.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive (supplemental mapset)

4. gmapsupp.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi SD Card drive (supplemental mapset)

5. gmapoem.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (OEM mapset), user accessible, cannot be unselected from the unit via Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info

*Note, when using the following default system maps as user maps, you'll naturally lose their default map attributes.

6. gmapbmap.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (default basemap), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmapbmap.img, NOT selectable and does NOT show up under installed maps (Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info) but may be visible under Tools/Settings/System/About/Basemap

7. gmaptz.img: (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (default 7x5 Timezone map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmaptz.img

8. gmap3d.img: (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (default 7x5 3D Buildings map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmap3d.img

+9. gmap3d1.img (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (secondary 7x5 3D Buildings map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmap3d1.img

Nuvi internal (diagnostic utility) OS map naming
-----------------------------------------------------------
7x0/7x5

1. PROM1 = gmapprom.img
2. PROM2 = gmapprom1.img
3. Suppmap1 = gmapsupp.img (nuvi drive only)
4. Suppmap = gmapsupp.img (SD Card drive only)
5. Dir DB = gmapoem.img
6. Basemap = gmapbmap.img

7x5 only

7. TZMap = gmaptz.img
8. 3DMap 1 = gmap3d.img
+9. 3DMap 2 = gmap3d1.img

Thankyou for your help.
I transferred the NA maps to an SD card then used Mapinstall to load the limited European regions that I need. (and deleted the checkmark on the 2008 maps as advised). It did take hours, with only one computer crash!

Can I delete the old Europe maps and reinstall the NA ones? Would I remove only the .img file?
If not, would the NA ones be accessible via the SD card and work at normal speeds?

I apologise for all the questions - but delving into the inner workings of a Nuvi is new to me (and very interesting)

Thanks again

You should be able to place the NA maps on an SD card. The files you looking for on the 770 are any that start with gmapprom. The NA map should be named gmapprom1.img, as far as I know.

Since you already downloaded the full Europe 2012.20 to your computer you could always leave the NA maps where they are and only load the pieces of the Europe maps that you need. To do this you would need a program from Garmin's website called Mapinstall (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291 ). With Mapinstall you can load and use it to pick just the Europe regions you want, create the mapset and copy the created file to you Nuvi. At the very worst you may need to delete the old Europe maps (gmapprom.img) but it sounds like you should probably be ok. Note when I say "delete" I really mean to copy the file to your PC until your sure it's the correct map file.

If you use the Mapinstall option and don't delete the old Europe maps, go into Tools - Settings - Map - Map Info on the Nuvi and delete the checkmark in the box beside the Europe maps entry. This will insure your only using the NEW 2012.20 maps for Europe.

Installing City Navigator Europe 2012.20 on Nuvi 770

I am not sure if this is the correct forum but my query relates to published queries in April/May 2010.
I have downloaded Western Europe 2012.20(2.72Gb)to my computer since it was too large an update to be accommodated on my Nuvi 770.
I only need the UK and some EU countries on my GPS but there were no limited update options that included UK. Is there a way to identify and upload individual countries?
If not, could I delete the North America 2011.20 information (1.61Gb)and install the European info? Could I then reinstate the NA data at a later date.

I have not yet used the SD card slot. Could I purchase an SD card (4Gb?) and move the US info to the card? Does the 770 read directly from the card if required?

TIA

@Moderators
Please update page 1 to reflect the name convention for 2x0/5 7x0/5 1xxx 24xx and 3xxx and others as one call up this page when traveling and has to update the GPS and have to hunt for the information to what naming conventions are available. The reference to page 3 could be a one liner on page 1 as is \map and models bmapsupp.img can be renamed as GarminSA32.img or what ever is required!

There is only the one check mark and hence both maps are on or off but I can not change one separately!

Anyone have any ideas on how to separate the maps??

I would like to know this as well. I have two CNNA maps that I would like to separate. Could I change the family ID on one of the images?

Edit: This is exactly what I want to do: http://www.noeman.org/gsm/garmin-tutorials-discussions/178588-selectable-maps-same-fid-possible.html

They are not coded as "Family" but separate groups, One had a code of 8200 and the other had a code of 8500

Your maps should have different FID.

There is no limit that I know of, or have reached ;-), on the 1490T using an Micro SD card. Mapsets must have an unique name and end with the .img extension. That is the only limitation I know of.
harrisc Posted - 22 sept. 2010 : 15:32:36
On 1490T I added several maps to the microSD card in \Map directory. Two maps were "contours". Not all maps where listed in the map info page but at least one map which was not listed was still showing on screen.

Is there any limits to the number of maps that can be added to the microSD card /Map or a \Map folder on unit?

You would need to delete the City Navigator North America from the Nuvi in order to install the Europe maps on the device. In the 7x0 series only the 770 has enough internal storage to store both the North America and Europe maps at the same time. A supplemental map set could be run from an SD card however.

This thread is a bit old, but when I tried to put a supplemental map that I had, Europe, directly onto my Nuvi 760, there isn't enough room. Only 370 meg available. Is there something I'm missing?

hi
@boyd

i wonder if it can display all the data on a bluchart map?

That's interesting - no Map folder on my 1350t when I got it several months ago. I noticed another oddity of the new system which had me confused for awhile though. My 1350t would NOT recognize a gmapsupp.img file in the \Garmin directory of the internal storage. It wouldn't recognize any other .img files there either.

However, on the memory card it did recognize a gmapsupp.img file in the \Garmin directory. Bug or "feature"?...
