Hi all,
this thread I created in the hope
1) the contributors of MioPocket from time to time come along here to see what MioPocket-users are wishing and/or suggesting to get MioPocket the world's finest PNA/GPS unlocker.
2) MioPocket-users share here their experience (and how-to) in extending the possibilities MioPocket already offers
DON'T EXPECT THAT EVERY POST HERE WILL BE PERFECT FOR EVERYONE!

BTW: This project was started on the basis of Osprey's MioPocket Mini 4.0, because initially I meant I can overtake most of Osprey's work. But with time detected too many inconsistencies. So I rewrote it from the ground up.  |

I also would say it makes no sense anymore to buy a new CE based system if you can get an Android alternative. |

Seems you totally misunderstood me.
I only expressed Windows (Embedded) CE is a dead OS. I additionally remarked that one in near future will not have the chance to get a further update/ugrade of any existing navigation software written for CE. And I expressed my conviction that one definitly (today) buys garbage if it's a device based on CE. I never said Windows (Embedded) CE is a bad OS. Of course everyone can continue to purchase a CE based GPS ...
As you probably will know, TomTom ended maintaining their Navigator's CE version in 2009. NNG (iGO Primo) stopped maintaining their CE version in February 2012. Waze ended maintaining their navigation software's CE version in 2010. Mireo since 2 years no more distributes their viaGPS for CE. And so on ... I wont enumerate them all here.
I have therefore given away my CE based device and bought an Android based GPS. I also purchased a navigation software running on Android. This way I always get the navigation software's updates/upgrades for free (maps included).
BTW: I don't use cracked software as this is the case with some owners of CE based units who want to run the CE version of iGO, TomTom, GarminXT, Mireo, Waze, Navigon and so forth, for what reasons ever - probably they bought a cheap GPS and then try to illegally update this by themselves.
EDIT:
Last week I was invited by Microsoft to an information lecture on "Windows Embedded 8" - which replaces Windows Embedded CE. Will likely participate. |

I take your point but just because Microsoft support ends does not mean the useful end of these systems on various devices as I still have devices with CE 4.2 and they are working well with updates available for software every year.
I feel it is not necessary to change your device unless you are one of those geeks that has to have the latest gizmo/gadget always and as we know they are not always the best what with teething problems etc.
As they say horses for courses!!

I am afraid I have to disagree with you here regarding those CE versions largely now dead as you say.
I have been using MP4 on CE devices from 4.2 upwards for a number of years and I have yet to find similar sat navs with all the facilities that say iGO Primo offers ,yes you have to buy map updates every couple of years but apart from that none of the Tom Toms /Garmin/ Becker etc. come close to iGos software and of course there are third party options to improve this further.I will cetainly not be changing my gear just to have the latest "gadget" so to speak but except for a couple errors on MP which Osprey never got round to fixing before going awol I am extremely happy with CE devices.

the metro style fits perfectly with the original UI of my Mio Moov S400. Hope a final release will follow soon. |

MioPocket Mini 4.0 FV
Some weeks ago a neighbour brought me her outdated 64MB RAM unit, running CE 5.0 Core. She asked me to install MioPocket 4.0 on it. She promised me a bottle of wine for the case I would have success. After thinking about this request, I decided to use "MioPocket Mini 4.0 Rel.2". But in a complete modified version, this due to the little RAM available. I decided to split the known MioPocket skin, as this was the case with all versions prior to MioPocket 4.0, into folders - that was the reason I subtitled the project 'FV'.
This skin modification decreases noticeably usage of RAM and/or Video-RAM. Not dozens of icons have to be loaded at once and kept in RAM and/or Video-RAM, but only a handfull per folder-page. "MioPocket Mini 4.0 FV" only consumes ~ 250KB RAM (plus RAM used by the applications launched from within "MioPocket Mini 4.0 FV").
A metro style Windows Phone 8 look and feeling also now possible: this what my neighbour wished.
I got two bottles of wine ...

I haven't done this in a long while, so do some research. Older software will still work, but might not be optimised to take advantage of more modern technology like multiple cores, etc
Appgeeker's Windows version is buy-ware: $35.95 USD. Use Freemake Video Converter instead, it's a Win32 free-ware! It became my personal favorite... With this tool you can also resize any video to a custom format of your choice (ex. 800x480, 480x272,etc). |
