With all the hubub in the mapopolis forums about bugs with WM2003SE and VGA screens, i thought it would be smart to start a thread about raster software and how it reacts with the newer devices. I got an HP Ipaq hx4700 today and i am pleased to announce that Memory-Map 4.2.4 seems to work flawlessly in the high resolution. even in landscape mode, everything renders fine. There is a warning that comes up when you install saying that the program may not work properly because it was designed for the older version of windows mobile, which pretty much means that the program will run full screen, with pixel doubling. so you're not actually getting a better quality map display from the higher res screen. at least not yet. however the landscape mode is an interesting new way to use it... unfortunately since it is using pixel doubling, the dialogs still take up some real estate on the screen. I'm going to see about a demo of outdoor navigator and some other popular packages to see how they behave. Does anyone else have any experience with other programs or other devices yet?

Posted - 08 nov. 2004 : 17:27:57 I've been using OZ for a few weeks now with good success after first not having my WiFi work. Now all is good. MSFT Pocket Streets looks pretty cool running in VGA mode on it. I am still trying out other programs but I've been using my TomTom GO more than my Toshiba lately for navigation. |

Posted - 08 nov. 2004 : 17:08:12 hey guys, good news... i guess this is more pda related than actually gps, but there is a newcomer to the "VGA hacks" arena. OzVGA. check it out at http://ozvga.narod.ru/ or you can download it at my faster mirror at http://members.cox.net/kenundrum/index.htm
pretty much it's like a mix of the SE_VGA hack and the Tweaks2k2. you can customize the size of scroll bars and fonts etc... so far, mapopolis still looks like trash on it, but memory map is good.

Posted - 28 oct. 2004 : 00:46:44 Guillame- It looks like the rest of the group what we Toshiba owners have know for a long time; VGA on a PDA can be amazing! Even the upgrade to WM2003SE was worth the hassle of installing all my apps again.
Tweaks at least gives me choices when I don't want to run in se_vga mode such as when I run PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer). That is truly beautiful to use in True VGA mode. Amazing the clarity of it all. With my Toshiba running se_vga, Tweakts and Pocket Hack Master it is as good as and if not better than any of the HPs being released now. Really a shame Toshiba is leaving the US PDA market!

Posted - 27 oct. 2004 : 05:49:02 Mapsonic really looks great. I tried the new Ozi yesterday. It has a problem with the pointer that appears on the corner instead of the center. I sent mail to the developers. I guess that the fixed version will be offered there by the end of the week. |

Posted - 27 oct. 2004 : 00:16:06 Ah very nice, that was fast, need to try it! The upload on the GpsPasSion server should be fine for larger pics?
Here's a road app that works well with SE_VGA or BruteForce, MapSonic

Posted - 26 oct. 2004 : 06:34:35 Here is what the Ozi deverlopers are saying:
Changes Development Version 1.11.6c
Fixes
Fixed the buttons on the Waypoint List dialog which were not working. Changes
Added support for high resolution VGA displays for PDA's (running Pocket PC 2003 Second Edition). This required numerous changes to the code (many hundreds) to make OziCE high resolution aware. No doubt I have missed making some changes and have done others wrong. Please not that I have not tried this on an actual PDA (waiting for a new VGA capable PDA to arrive) but have used it on the development emulator.
You can download it here: (requires a full working version of Ozi CE) http://www.oziexplorer2.com/eng/download/ozice_pda_setup.exe |

Posted - 26 oct. 2004 : 06:30:02 Pherhaps this worth mentioning in the main page as the first VGA friendly software. |

Posted - 26 oct. 2004 : 06:24:58 Great news !!! Ozi Explorer are offering a VGA supporting version in the development page. Just look at that -

I will try to see if I can upload a higher quality picture later. The only problem is actually the server that does not allow me to upload pics larger than 80K. |

Posted - 25 oct. 2004 : 17:42:41 the shots i posted are scaled down... the real shots are at http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8891&size=big&sort=1&cat=500 and yes, when you're just looking at windows or a program that was designed for the 192 dpi, it is simply amazing...

Posted - 25 oct. 2004 : 17:29:15 Make that a 4700? ;-) Well the screenshots turn out a bit odd on WM2003SE, I'm finding that they only work ok with SE_VGA and the brute force hack activated and then they cone out at 640x480 so it's a bit diffcult to reproduce. But yes as with the E800, the sharpness is amazing...and you get used to it ;-)

Posted - 25 oct. 2004 : 17:17:57 I just got a 7400 on Friday, and I am working on a hi-res version of Memory-Map now. I have fixed the screen refresh problem at the bottom of the screen in portrait mode. It also needs some bigger icons.
The display is really amazingly sharp: the screen captures here don't begin to do it justice. The pixel resolution is about 280 DPI - truely photographic quality!
