This post is intended for firmware upgrades (original or custom).
As a general rule, this post will be updated (from time to time) to reflect latest documents (or versions).

Last update: Monday, Aug 08, 2011

Question 1: what devices can be upgraded?
Answer 1: (until now) this procedure was tested on Mio C220_NA; C320; C520_EEU; C520T_WEU
Tested performed by: Mio C220_NA (me),Mio C250_EEU (tgg2k) , Mio C520_EEU (asgaard: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=111274&whichpage=5) C520T_WEU (krisvw: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=111274&whichpage=4), C320 (zeluis_cps: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=111274&whichpage=6), C520T_WEU (PeterMJ: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=111274&whichpage=6)

Question 2: how can I upgrade the firmware?
Answer 2: There is a small utility that is able to activate the UPGRADE screen. This upgrade screen will provide you the possibility to upgrade two components: uboot and wince.
http://www.4shared.com/file/cvkc5b2z/UPGRADE_MIO_11Jun10.html
In this package you’ll find the documentation available to perform the upgrade.
- Menu structure can be found in file menu.txt (UPGRADE_MIO_ddmmmyy.zip\SDCard\documents\menu.txt)
- Procedure (how to upgrade) can be found in file read-me.txt (UPGRADE_MIO_ddmmmyy.zip\SDCard\documents\read-me.txt)
WARNING: I DON'T RECOMMEND UPGRADING UBOOT.
WARNING: IN SOME CASES (read read-me.txt carefully) ALL THE INFORMATION FROM “MY FLASH DISK” MAY BE LOST, DO A BACK-UP FIRST.

Question 3: How can I come back to my old firmware (if I don’t like this new firmware)?
Answer 3: After you performed the upgrade is recommended to left the UPGRADE screen activated for a period of time (days, weeks) until are you 100% sure that your device is stable. After that you can disable the UPGRADE screen.
The firmwares I have (so far) are:

Other Mio/Mitac Clones:
Clarion EZD580, it is marketed in Europe under the names Clarion Map780 and Clarion MAP680:
Clarion EZD580 (R10.4.1331.0512) http://www.4shared.com/file/237243823/beea7b5e/Clarion_EZD580_ROM_R1041331051.html

If you have a different firmware you need to back-up your wince. To do that, you need DiscRW utility.
If your device is unlocked and you can run applications on your PNA, try to use this DiskRW software:
http://www.4shared.com/file/134354901/9ef633/DiskRW.html
instructions:
1.Start DiskRW
2.Select from combo-box (close to 'Store:') -> SMFlash
3.Press '...' button and select 'Storage Card' (where to save your SMFlash.img); If '...' doesn't work you can write (using any keyboard you have) the name of the SDCard folder of your PNA (ex: \Storage Card\, \SDMMC\ ...)
4.Press 'Read' button. A Hourglass will appear and it will take approx. 30 sec.
If the above application doesn't work, you should contact me to (on this thread) to fins a solution. Because every device is different I can’t give you a DiskRW custom made for your model.

For wince 4.2: you can use also bkondisk.exe (http://hpcmonex.net/roms/bkondisk.zip). For more info check: http://www.gpspassion.com/FORUMSEN/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=82603&whichpage=2

Question 4: I lost 'My Flash Disk' can I recover it with this procedure?
Answer 4: Yes. You have to use 'wince by USB (Format)' to format your 'My Flash Disk'.
WARNING: ALL THE INFORMATION FROM “MY FLASH DISK” WILL BE LOST (and there is nothing you can do to save it).

Question 5: There is anything else that I should know?
Answer 5: Yes. There are no warranties what so ever; so all you do is on your own risk. Anyway I can tell you that I uploaded on my GPS (C220_NA) many not compatible firmwares. I wouldn’t recommend you to do that until you really know what you are doing. If you check the firmware before and is using the same SMFlash memory area, like your device, (theoretically) there is no risk. But like I said: DON’T TRY THAT (unless you really know what you’re doing).

Those Q/A will cover most of the questions, but if you have other questions (or any advice) please let me know. When other firmware will be available I will update this post.

Custom firmware (usually ‘custom’ stands for ‘changed’ - aka ROM cooking).
software need it to change a firmware: ROMMasterCE5 (v.1.9.9) - http://www.4shared.com/file/237775472/8f86f256/ROMMasterCE_ver199.html

1. This is based on ROM R08.3 (NA) and has the explorer (taskbar) added. (doesn't work with C250!)
http://www.4shared.com/file/129470682/1fc8ff6d/C220_NA_ROM_R08_Desktop_1.html
Known bugs:
- There is a file 'desktop.ini' on every folder (from the GPS) – including Desktop.
- The menu 'send to Desktop as a shortcut' is not working.

2. This is based on ROM R08.3 (NA) and has the explorer (taskbar) and all office components added. (doesn’t work with C250!)
http://www.4shared.com/file/129470932/f760619b/C220_NA_ROM_R08_Desktop_2.html
Known bugs:
- There is a file 'desktop.ini' on every folder (from the GPS) – including Desktop.
- The menu 'send to Desktop as a shortcut' is not working.

3. This is based on ROM R08.3 (NA) and has the explorer (taskbar) and all office components added. Has a Navigator.lnk shortcut from Desktop to \My Flash Disk\MioMap\Miomap\Miomap.exe. If you have, more than one, navigation software you can place a script there - using mortscript switch command; to be able to start any of those applications. Also previous version has the FSRAMPERCENT to small -> was increased to 1.5M (doesn’t work with C250!)
http://www.4shared.com/file/129471186/a5564a94/C220_NA_ROM_R08_Desktop_3.html
Known bugs:
- There is a file 'desktop.ini' on every folder (from the GPS) – including Desktop.
- The menu 'send to Desktop as a shortcut' is not working.
- Taskbar is on top of the navigation software. FIX: Start \ Settings \ Taskbar and Start Menu -> CHECK Auto hide

A second (more complicated option) that will help you to recover MioC320 (probably also C520 and C720) is JTAG recovery:
http://www.4shared.com/file/JAIsslVX/RecoverMioCX20.html
This method can be used also for GWES error at start up or 'only orage screen' at start up ... or other type of malfunctions.

With srelioskoz help we have a recovery method also for Moov series :)

============================================================================================================
FIRST OF ALL DO NOT TRY ANYTHING IN YOUR MIO BEFORE YOU READ ALL THIS POST
IF YOU DON'T SEE YOUR FIRMWARE AVAILABLE, DON'T TRY TO USE ANOTHER FIRMWARE, FIRST DOWNLOAD THE SMFLASH.IMG (TO BE ABLE TO RESTORE YOU DEVICE, LATER ON) AND ONLY AFTER THAT YOU CAN PLAY WITH OTHER FIRMWARES.

WARNING! DON'T USE PIN9 MOTHODE UNLESS YOU TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE ... MAY END UP WITH A BRICKED DEVICE (that can be only through JTAG recovered).
@ablbd:
" ... most probably is data corruption into bootloader blocks. I would say that pin9 unlock will always produce somewhere on nand data corruption. The bad luck is when that "somewhere" happens to be in bootloader area..."

banneris reported (page 121) reported a Moov_M400 recovery (with wrong paths.xml configuration), switching RESET button ...
============================================================================================================

1. I emptied battery completely (If device is working you may turn on route simulation)
2. Connect Mio with USB cable with PC, with switch on RESET position
3. Now comes a series of fast switching ON/OFF, do it couple of times but make sure the screen is on during your switch is off, it takes about a second then turn the switch ON, then OFF, then ON ....
4. Why? Well I am not sure in this but it behaves similar as you turn your PC on and then hit the brake button.
5. How long? Well, in my case, until you reach the point when your PC recognize the device. The moment takes a second and disappears, but if you are lucky and catch the moment, your Mio screen will be frozen but you'll see the device mounted!!! Then you may fix paths.xml or whatever you did before...

btw I dont think that the bat should be empty.... nonsense I know... I hope it will work for some of you...

Still not the right driver as it must show "SEC SOC Test Board" or "SEC SOC SMDK Board". Use another USB slot on your XP and install secusb2.inf driver manually. Don't forget: in order to install driver, previously select in blue screen one of "upgrade ... by usb" menu items. Warning: don't ever use "format" option from blue screen!!!

Driver has nothing to do with dnw doanload address setting.
PIFOUGPS Posted - 06 oct. 2014 : 21:51:08
Thank you, but when I update with this driver, xp says than I already have the latest version and the MIO appears as "Microsoft USB Sync" then it is detected by XP correctly but when I want to use DNW I always have "Can't open usb device". I previously tested with :
*USB Download Driver (Windows)
*WinCE USB Driver (Windows)
*DNW Download Tool (Windows)
from http://www.friendlyarm.net/downloads

May be the USB address is wrong, how can I find the good usb adress to enter ? I tested Ox30000000, OxC000000 but same result :-(
ablbd Posted - 06 oct. 2014 : 19:44:11
Drivers won't work on win8, must do this on Win XP; I uploaded here some versions of DNW, use 1.01. Normally, after selecting "upgrade wince by usb" and driver manually installed, DNW will show USB-OK and you can proceed with download.
PIFOUGPS Posted - 06 oct. 2014 : 06:53:37
Thank you for your answer, but it s what i did, i can see it on the device manager but i don t know if DNW drivers are working with win8pro64 which install its own drivers, and i still have the problem with xp, what is the name of the device once the DNW are installed ? Do you have a link to download working drivers because i m not sure that mine are working :-/
ablbd Posted - 06 oct. 2014 : 06:34:22
You have to install drivers from dnw folder: select from menu upgrade by usb, usb device will show up in device manager. Here you have to update manually driver with the one(s) came with DNW.
PIFOUGPS Posted - 04 oct. 2014 : 08:58:57
I installed drivers on XP and on WIN8PRO64 netbook, both recognize the M405 which display usb connected n its blue screen but on Windows, DNW.exe "can't find the device" even with adresse 0xC000000 or 0x30000000 I still have [COM:X][USB:X][ADDR:0x30000000] as if it was not recognized as usb port number.
I have the wince.bin file, all the material but I can't write it on my M400, what to do ?

Hello, I have a problem with my device.
It is a Mio Moov 200 and when I have tried to put a menu to install another browser I think that I unfourtunately deleted some file that the system needs to start and it didn't start. An error window appeared that said that the system couldn't find a file. And also the device didn't connect with the computer via usb.
I have tried with two methods:
1.- With the pins of the ON/OFF/RESET button, but the system didn't change.
2.- With the pin 9. This time the system has changed. Now the system loads until the orange window but it stops.
I have tried to upgrade the system but I haveen't found my firmware, it is a Cobia 300 WWE, so I have followed the instructions of the forum and I have downloaded the Cobia 420_64 but the system doesn`t start and I have put it in my sdcard in the Cobia_300_32 folder but the device doesn't start with any program, only the orange window.
Can you help me please? How can I recover my device?
Thank you very much.

Hi. I once changed firmware and installed MioMap2008 on my MioC250. Now I wanted to change it back, so followed instructions on this site. I managed to install old firmware, but I can't install navigation software itself. My PC doesn't see neither flash disk nor memory card.

Spirit 480 is a pretty strange device due to the fact that are spread around several hardware and software versions of it: equipped with iNand(SD chip) or standard Nand. The ones booting from standard Nand have at least 2 wince versions. The situation is even more complicated by the fact it that does not have SD slot and is equipped wint an ARM11 core (S5P6443). Wince upgrade through SD is less restrictive then DNW upgrade because DNW is sending only the image and/or region, so the bootloader will calculate checksum(s) and will compare them with the internally stored checksum values. As far as I know from datasheets and my own experience with a Spirit 480, all Samsung ARM11 cores are seen on jtag as 2 devices: closest to TDO lays a so-called ETB (Embedded Trace Buffer, IRLen=4), then comes the actual ARM11 core (IRLen=5). Is not an easy task to handle such a device on jtag and no free software will work on LPT interface except (maybe) Open OCD... I managed to load, run and communicate with a specially conceived "driver" in order to perform read/write operations on Nand but I used a "clever" USB dongle equipped with a 32bit MCU/64MB RAM together with an own software to handle this dongle. Shortly: I can access the blue screen but I don't have the right wince for this device. In case that yours is equipped with iNand then is even more complicated to unlock the upgrade menu but most probably will work the package posted by apick1.

@ablbd: Thanks a lot for your clue!
The upgrade seems to be successful, because on the screen is to be read:
"MountDisk: SUCCESS!
Open CE image ...
Checksum: 0x3d05cb36
Writin CE image...
Format FLASH for BINFS
Upgrade OK.
Restart your device."
But now the issue is: If I remove the SD-card and then switch off by the switch on the backside of the c230t and switch on again, nothing happens, the screen remains black. Booting up is only possible with any inserted SD-card, regardless of data on it. But then always the same menu of the upgrade utility appears. This routine seems to be written into built-in flash EPROM or whatever.
And when I insert the SD-card during the mentioned black screen into the device, its behaviour does not change, meaning still nothing happens.
Therefore, unfortunately I cannot follow your advice.

Btw: There is no option "user" to be seen.
The options of the menu on main screen with header "Tilapia_UT_R06_0822 MLC 1G" are:
0=WINCE Upgrade
1=GPS Tools
2=BT Tools
3=UBOOT Upgrade
4=Memory Tools
5=Other Tools

Hopefully, you know or there are any further clues are likely to yield my desired result in making the c230t connectable with my PC via USB or even making it bootable without an inserted SD-card. I really would like to get it back to life and rescue it from binning......

grcccz: To lock upgrade menu: after successfull upgrade (and before reset) remove the card. Reinsert it after the device booted up, run again the utility with option "user" then reset again.

Due to my bad English I feel kind of "information overflow" in view of more than 160 sites that this article consists of meanwhile, what prevents me from finding a solution for my problem regarding a Mio c230t.

Therefore I allow me and dare politely asking the community for support as follows:

I have a Mio Digiwalker c230t. Due to the fact that this device formerly had some software problems, unknown if caused by firmware, map-software or anything else, I let it lie and used my Galaxy S3 smartphone for navigation instead, particularly as Mio does not support c230t anymore.

But recently I read about potential possibilities of upgrading and unlocking this device in order to use it with maps and software of other brands. And while surfing corresponding sites in the internet I found the article, published on page 1 of this thread and with unfortunately clueless energy dared to use the utility, link:

http://www.4shared.com/file/cvkc5b2z/UPGRADE_MIO_11Jun10.html

Firstly everything worked fine according to included "readme.txt", with the exception of not having been able to use a USB-connection for the firmware upgrade, foreseen within the menu of the utility in blue screen with white colored font.
Thus I tried to do it by SD-card. Thereon, the utility rejected working because of missing winceimg.cks. Ok, I searched and found it somewhere for download.
Then the utility went on working fine, made up wince and region upgrade, gave an ok at the end of procedure and advised me to restart the device, but neither by using the red on/off-button nor by hard reset switching using the backward black mini switch I had a different result from the fact that the utility's menu appeared again.

Since then the Mio c230t only starts, if a SD-card is plugged in the slot and no matter what kind of SD-card I plug in, e.g. with MioPocket on it, your utility starts and nothing else. So I assume, the bootloader has been scratched somehow.

Then I vainly tried to "re-firmware" it by using the both original firmware files, published also within your article. The crazy thing is that my computer recognizes a USB-device connected to it (BEEP) but it consequently refuses to install it. Any attempt to manage this by usage of all the findable USB drivers for the c230t, meaning the *.inf- and *sys-files, included the USB drivers that come with the above mentioned utility, had been in vain until now. The original official Mio-Software CD is logically not helpful either, because the Mio does not find its way into my Windows 8. I also tried taking Windows XP via Oracle Virtual Box, but also: no way!

I also tried the boot-update of the said utility and had to choose the SD-option, too, because of the lack of an USB-connection, but the utility says, the "Uboot.cks"-file is missing. Does anybody know a source for downloading this file? (If this should be a possibility of getting it back to "normal" life at all...).

So I am completely on a loss for that situation and request kind of despairingly for a solution of this mess: what can I do to get this seemingly (at least half)-bricked Mio c230t-device connected USB-wise to my PC resp. back to "normal" life??? Any clue welcome!!! :-)

Thanks for gentle responses in advance!!

If you do a search for your request, you'll find some information on page 74 of this thread. This suggests that Moov 330 flash can be used which is on page 1.

adlbd: I've tried a few tests using the working S505 which has an SD slot.

I've downloaded and tried a few versions of DNW all of the latest are V1.01 marked as usb 2 compatible.

I've deleted all the previous installations and tried various drivers to make sure this is not the issue. Everything is showing up as it should do on the device manager with it recognised as a SEC S3C2443X test B/D.

When using DNW it doesn't let you load the region file first as it detects it as an invalid image file.

In all instances it isn't loading the region file.

Enclosed link is the sd card performing a good upgrade

http://www.4shared.com/photo/ltqGv4Mm/SDFlash.html

And the next one is how it looks when DNW is used.

http://www.4shared.com/photo/TclA_wf3/USBFlash.html

I had a play with a programme called usbburntool with uses the same drivers as dnw. This recognises the device and upload file but just wouldn't commence the transfer.

I'll try some more variations to see if I can make any work.

Any more ideas would be appreciated as I'm running out of them !

ablbd:

The reason I was thinking this was the cause of the issue was that I have seen three devices that loose their region information during flashing.(Navman 378, F35 & Mio M300) All of which have a separate region and Winceimg files. These all have usb only connections and therefore I had to use DNW.

I've used DNW on other systems where there has only been a Winceimg file and its worked fine.

The only system I have with both an SD slot and usb with seperate region and winceimg files is the Mio S505. I decided to do some tests.

Here's what I found.

Flashing the device from the SD card using format with region & Image.

This worked fine with the project code etc seen in the device file and
connection to Navdesk/Miomore possible.

I then repeated the process with format with region & image using DNW.
Everything looks fine on the screen it says erasing region and copying
image but after completion the fault I've seen on other units existed.
The region info was missing and the device info file does not show S505 and other info. Also it connects via usb to a PC but the Mio/Navman software does not recognize it.

It appears that DNW is only loading the Winceimg.bin file even though its looks like it loading the region on the device.(Loading region by itself shows invalid image)

Some Roms only have the one file. Is that because the region info is built into it and is it a requirement for others to have a separate region file ?

It was an interesting exercise to do.
If I've done everything correctly then a image cannot be loaded onto any device without an SD slot if the region file is separate.

I'm sure you'll have some comments.

ablbd: The Navman 378 has no SD slot so I've used DNW.EXE to load the image via USB. However as the image and region files are separate for this Rom. Is the problem that DNW.EXE can only load a single file (the winceimg.bin)onto the unit and therefore the region information never gets loaded. I don't think there is any method of loading the region file by itself. Is this why the project info etc is not getting loaded onto the unit ?
ablbd Posted - 30 juil. 2013 : 21:14:48
It would be tough with jtag but not totally impossible due to the fact that region is part of the file system, where physical location is swapable. This means that the physical location of the sector you would like to change can be anywhere on nand and from one restart to the next one the physical location can change. To owerwrite a file system sector using jtag is pretty impossible unless you force debug mode to cpu, dump the whole nand, locate the data in question and rewrite whatever you want without quitting debug mode. Additionally, you have to use an ECC capable driver...

Ok no problem.
When I get time I could hook one up to JTAG and see it its the same.
Although I think JTAG just does the same via a different method.
Might be worth a try though.

In case that after issuing format you are not imediately uploading os & region but switch off your device, the secondary bootloader will be lost as in this moment it is erased from nand and the only existing copy is loaded in RAM; consequently device will need jtag recovery.

As usual thanks for your help.

I think I've tried every combination available, Base, Base & Region, Base CE, all with format both from the tools menu and with format in the command menu.

None seem to produce the required result.

On these units Format and shutting the unit down doesn't seen to brick them.

They seem different to others ?

I'll have a play with the various settings, although I think I've tried most already.
These units have USB only, I'll try formatting, wince base upgrade and upgrade without format and see if it makes any difference.

It may be these are to be classed as units that the Rom cannot be flashed on. Unless anyone one else has been successful ?

However when the unit is restarted it is recognised as a USB storage device but not the Mio desktop.

This is something I've seen with the ROM's for the Navman M300 and F35 which do the same. (The units look similar too)

Do you think the ROM layout on these units are different to normal.

Can anyone please give me some advice?

Up until now i've been using this:

and then i've adapted it like this:
http://postimg.org/image/5gs1k9afr/

Both of these worked well with H-JTAG, and SJF2450 detects the processor, but is having problems with the NAND..

If i do the other schematics with the buffer, will SJF2450 work ok??
ablbd Posted - 09 juin 2013 : 16:38:30
Any buffered solution is good. Keep in mind that VCC has to be 3,3V

@ablbd
in that case, will this be any good for the MIO Moov 500??

ablbd Posted - 09 juin 2013 : 08:46:25
LPT+resistors jtag will work on 5V logic devices(like rooters) but NOT on 3,3V logic! For this application you need a buffered interface, which translates the 5V logic from PC side into 3,3V logic at device side.
Documentation says that internal jtag interface is 5V tolerant (hopefully!!), which means it survives to 5V. I suggest to stop using this equipment as it exists the risk that 5V transition spikes could burn out the internal jtag buffers located in CPU.

Hello to everyone!
I have a Mio Moov 500 that got totally bricked (BLACK SCREEN):((
After someone tried the pin9 to GND method to try to upgrade the firmware, now it doesn't even start any more. It only charges when connected via USB to a PC, but the screen doesn't power on, and it's not discovered by the PC.
I've tried pulling out it's battery, but still nothing. I've managed to connect it successfully to H-JTAG with a LPT cable and some resistors (without additional power/voltage input) that i soldered onto the board of the GPS, and it says "ARM926EJ-S 0x07926F0F" but i have no idea what to do next. I also fond SEC-JTAG-FLASH sjf2450 (thanks to ablbd) that works with Mio Moov 500... but what do i do next?
Please someone help me!

Have you managed to reflash the unit from the blue upgrade screen.

For some strange reason, you cannot get active-sync connection on this
unit, there is not enough .DLL files in windows, you have to live with it, if you can connect to PC and "see" the drives that is all you can get.

CD Key should be on CD, which came with the device.

Sorry, I've forgotten about the non-persistent registry on these devices.

@ jimski,
after you recover your unit, you have to load back your CD, or the backed up DSK1,
Navman software will not work if you don't load the Serial Key.
To unlock your device, you should use Mio Moov Unlock:
https://www.box.com/s/j4ypp5iw2bqbylkg86bi

After that you can put shortcuts to your favorite stuff on the desktop
and you are ready to discover the world.

.fdf is non-persistent registry (as in all Mio devices and clones), so any modification will be lost after reset. I suggest to upgrade rom with format, this is the way to solve all the issues.
johnhayter Posted - 17 mai 2013 : 10:40:55
Hi jimski,
I have dumped the registry files default.fdf from your msflash
and original ROM, both from XIPKernel and NK and converted them
to .reg file, you can check if anything was changed in your
registry, here is a link:
https://www.box.com/s/h0ho0chz2sg44k5m8ed6

You could use PHM_REGEDIT.exe, which is part of MioPocket 4.0:
http://www.mediafire.com/?43c75wbq5cb4cbg
it is located in MIOPOCKET4.0/MioAutoRun/Programs/PHM Tools
You can open default.reg with Notepad on your PC.

If you cannot find anything, you have to flash you S90i with format of internal storage,
I had to do it on my S200.
What is your native language.

Write protected nand (as SMFLASH is) cannot be written through file system. You must enter bootloader menu (see page 1) and upgrade wince with format from SD card.

on how to unbrick Navman S200 family?
This is another rebranded Mio Moov with Mermaid firmware.
If you read kindly, where I started my posts, you'll find some explanation and link to original firmware, I have dumped original smflash from virgin Navman S200, which can be found here:
https://www.box.com/s/k3jzlz85o1yzns6o95u1
ablbd is working on extracting original firmware and region.bin, which can be added later.
I still have Navman S200 and can test files on it.

@johnhayter
Using cUPGRADE_APP.exe, Use Supermode and then "unlock", which clears this issue!

Hi nice people,
I have managed to recover my Navman S200, I did not cook the new firmware,
I simply have followed ablbd's instructions:
INSTALL WINCEIMAGE.BIN WITH FORMAT OF THE FLASH,
I did not have region.bin but because I already had device
half bricked, I did try a few region bins from different Navmans,
mostly these with 128 MB of RAM, after that there was no picture
at start-up, just black screen with a firmware number,
the region file didn't load at all it just froze the unit,
than I came across Navman F200T, which can be found on page 1,
this region.bin together with winceimg.bin, from few posts above:
http://www.4shared.com/rar/5Hiqv25V/mermaid_iboot_R18000332.html
repaired the device.
I am only facing a small problem, when I re-boot the unit with
micro SD in the unit, even empty, I am back in bootloader mode.
Is there any wire trick or some other settings, which would disable
this behaviour?
Help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to the people of this thread.
johnhayter Posted - 09 mai 2013 : 14:07:22
Hi ablbd,
I don't think there is any chance of recovery this way, because
something is missing in the process, file AppStartupSec.exe,
in \My Flash Disk\Program Files\Navman, was renamed to _AppStartupSec.exe.
In default.fdf at the very bottom, we read $ L a u n c h 8 0 A p p S t a r t u p P r i . e x e,
this file is located in windows and it is propably looking for the AppStartupSec.exe.
The only way to recover it would be to add another Launch90, 100 or 999 to start maybe CECMD.exe
from .\Storage Card or add explorer.exe to NK.bin and launch it from Launch50, Launch60 starts services.exe, Launch20 starts device.exe and Launch30 starts gwes.exe.
Could you enlighten me please if this is a right way of thinking?
I have never worked with winceimg.bin, I would need some enlightment
in this matter or have maybe someone to do it for me.
Another option is to send a present to someone and let that someone play with it.

Hi ablbd,
thanks for such fast replay,
as you propably have figured it out, I was that someone,
always goin one step too far.
This is MERMAID.R10.00.0294
Please forgive me but what is TC?

Edit 1:
The Unit doesn't react to iboot.exe on microSD card
nor is recognised by USB.
When restarted shows a screen half black, with Navman S Series
S 200 and the other half is showing nice picture of the road
with the beach and the hill in the background

Edit 2:
I did the wire trick to pin 9, you have to touch chassis and pin 9
of NAND cheep (photo: http://www.4shared.com/file/192360271/79584b60/moov330pcbback1.html
after that press and hold power button and you are in different world,
here you can brick your device beyond repair.
Remainder, micro SD, whith the bin files, has to be in the slot.
Micro SD has to be formated in FAT 16, 4GB formated FAT 16
didn't work, I've used 128MB, (old NOKIA phone)
I have got 5 options:
0 - Base & Region by SD/MMC (Format)
1 - Base & Region by SD/MMC
2 - Base & Region by USB (Format)
3 - Base & Region by USB
4 - Exit
Never select any position with (Format), if you dont have right files.
Select, 4 - Exit, by tapping the screen, till you get to position 4
and press Power button, this will take you back to Main Menu,
where you can do even more dammage to your unit.

In Main Menu, I selected Only win CE, now I have got different picture at the front, a girl is looking at me and smiling, I cannot smile back because the unit is still not connecting to my PC.

REMAINDER: THIS IS NAVMAN S200 128 MB RAM AND 1.9 GB(2GB)ROM
At start-up screen displays MERMAID.R10.00.0294
Now displaysn MERMAID.R18.00.0332

Thanks, to all people who were involved in this forum, especially
g-alin, for starting it.

Hi nice people,
I was wondering if by any chance, someone would have Navman S200 firmware and method
of recovery, this is one of the Mermaid units, some very smart person was trying to
unlock it and have changed the name of the wrong file in \My Flash Disk\Program Files
folder.
It has 128 MB of RAM and 1.2 GB My Flash Disk.
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for your suggestion, and I indeed have Acronis installed, but only on my desktop computer. Anyway my Mio S600 shows exactly the same symptoms also on my 2nd and 3rd computer without Acronis installed, therefore I guess this issue isn't related with Acronis software..

Yeah, jtag may help. Last week it was sent to me an s505 in order to unlock upgrade screen and rewrite rom; as yours, that one did not reacted to pin9 trick too. Inside one country the 2 way fast delivery cost is around 9eur but international costs are higher, so you should find somebody from your own country able to unlock your device.

Sory to hear that..so in that case, your device is a real mess and really needs a rom restoration, but that is another case, where my knowledge and expiriences ends on these newer Mio series..
By the way, I have USB problems on my mio S600 and no such problems with my friend's Mio S505 which I borrow to test the unlock that could work on your same device.

@Janch
Thanks for this last try out of the hat!
I could download and give it a try but it failed again. The SDCard I use worked perfectly in the past with this s505. So, reading your last posts I've found the BIG difference between the model you have and mine: you mention "When I connect it to USB, it detects the device but PC cannot recognise it" but not mine! I can plug it in and out nothing, my PC doesn't detect anything! I will store it wishing I can have one day the help of a friend for JTAG maybe? Here in Europe the price for the repair by Mitac is equal or above to buying a new one!
Anyway many thanks for trying Janch, much appreciated

Hello! Thanks for your inputs I understand your point I thought it was easier. Unfortunately with regard to this domain (electronic) I'm somehow a "new kid in the block" :-))
As I'm unable to make a buffered interface and even still no idea on where are the JTAG plots on the main board I will give up and store my s505 waiting for the day I'll find someone having this knowledge and able to do it for me. Now I have to find a new GPS :-(
I've appreciated your help to you all on this forum! Many thanks!

Don't try this only with resistors as it won't work (LPT logic 5,0V, JTAG logic 3,3V). You have to use a buffered interface with voltage adapter!

I've fixed quickly the battery problem and charged it. Put the 2GB SDCard I usually used without problems in the past(after having erased all) and did again the Pin9 procedure but still the orange screen shows up at the end. Reading back some comments from ablbd I'm afraid the bootloader is damaged=doesn't even read/check the SDCard.
I'll try to find a diagram showing how to connect the end of a parallel port lead to my s505 as to read and correct the blocks if possible.
If not buying a new one will be the only solution left :-(

Thanks for being there again for my s505! No problem I understand : besides the forum we all have a life! I've read carefully your explanations and will do this way as soon as I have fixed another hardware problem on my Mio : one pin inside the battery plug on the main board is twisted and the battery can't get plugged in it and so cannot charge! ... Murphy's Law :-(
That is why in the meantime I was using the usb lead as power supply for Pin9 procedure. I'll try to fix my battery problem first these days and come back to you with the result of your suggestion! Many many thanks for your support I appreciate it!

When already talking about the Mio S models, I have one problem too..I get Mio S600 in my hands with the USB connection problem. When I connect it to USB, it detects the device but PC cannot recognise it, so I cannot see the content of the flash disk directly from my PC. Anyway device otherwise boots into Mio Spirit app with no problem, so I assume, the flash disk is intact. I manage to unlock it with the unlock script (from my previous post) and when I connect USB cable within the new shell, device reboots..How can I identify the problem? Could be the registry problem? Hardware? All suggestions are most welcome..I tried various cables, and 2 PCs (XP, 7) same result! I can see all the content of a flash disk and windows folder with total commander, executed within the unlock shell. So after all USB connection isn't essential for me to update my Primo navigation, but I want to solve the USB problem anyway.

Hello
Sorry its taken me a while to get back to you.
I had not activated the blue upgrade on this model so couldn't give any more advice.
Today while sorting through some satnavs I came across an S505 and thought I'd see if I could activate the upgrade screen using pin 9.
First off I tried with a usb cable only and I showed a black screen only. A then put a blank 2gb micro card in and it worked first time.
Therefore we need to find out what you are doing different.
Here is my configuration (and technique)
I find it easier to have the PCB, Battery & screen out of the case and then connected together.
I used a charged battery connected to the PCB, no usb connection.
Double check it is all connected ok by switching on.
Switch it off to reset postion, put sd card in slot.
make something suitable as the pin 9 shorting cable. (Two pins soldered with a connecting wire works fine.)
Find a point for the earth connection. If using a pin cable there is a conductive sponge pad on the PCB that you can shove the pin into and free you hand.
Next find your spectacles and identify pin 9. Its on the chip with the white sticker and pin 1 has white mark on the PCB.
Connect the other end of the cable to pin 9 and slide the power switch from reset to on while keeping the connection, give it a couple of seconds to load before you take the connection away.
With some luck you've picked the correct pin and the blue screen is showing.
If not try a different model or size of SD card.
It works on my model so it will work on yours !

@Janch
Thanks for your concern about my problem.
You were right with your 1st post: the name of the folder in the s505 is SEEKER_T500. I had a previous unlocker based on that which was working with this folder's name.
Anyway I've tried several times the new one you've just sent without result. Apparently my S505 doesn't read anymore a SDCard during boot time...bad luck!
I've found here on the forum an image close to mine which should work in case of : MoovS505_EU_ROM_SEEKER.R16.00.0773.STF128M. wishing my s505 will accept it when able to get the blue screen...one day?
Anyway, thanks a lot for trying, I've appreciated the helping hand :-)
janch Posted - 23 avr. 2013 : 09:41:21
do you maybe have a backup of your device? If yes, please look inside the file device.xml what is the "magic folder" for your device. This is for Mio S605 for example:

I changed the magic folder to "Default" which is another option for Mio S505 acording to Mio Rescue disc specifications.. You can try it: http://db.tt/qy6d4qpg

crazyatc Posted - 23 avr. 2013 : 08:58:08
@Janch
Many thanks for your support! I did what you suggested. Had the 2 folders on an empty SDCard I was using when the S505 was still working. I had the USB lead connected for power but unfortunately it is still the same situation. I get SEEKER.R15.00.0747.STF128M then the orange animation which freezes at the end.I did it several times (with sdcard inserted prior to starting the device) and waited but nothing!
Probably something goes wrong in my BootLoader? Anyway many thanks for your support. At least you gave me hope after months! Have a nice day!
janch Posted - 22 avr. 2013 : 21:55:16
@crazyatc
Why bother with firmware restoration..You can try this SD unlock. The script is executed in the boot process so I think it should work! I prepare it acording to mio S505 model

1. Download: http://goo.gl/zK9RE
2. Unpack and copy folders "Apps" and "SEEKER_T500" to an empty SD
3. Insert SD and reset device. If you are lucky, you should see a miracle! :)

good luck!

@ablbd or anyone knowing how to solve my problem!

I have a s505 with SEEKER.R15.00.0747.STF128M which freezes on the orange screen, no connection with the pc on the usb port for months!
I've tried several times pin9 procedure to get the blue upgrade screen but it failed.
I've read page 80 your explanations on how to use Iboot.exe.
I found one Iboot.exe on Google (284Ko) hope it is the right one :-)
Can I use this technic to recover my s505 and how?
I'm not sure I've all understood on the way to operate: i.e. what to put with Iboot on the sdcard as to get the blue screen?

Or is there another better option than Iboot I can try i.e using H-JTAG but for that I'll need a big support as I am a "new kid in the block" :-))
My S505 has K9GAG08UOM + S3C2450XH-40
Thanks for the help!!

I've read on the forum:
1) first make a short between pin 12(vcc)and pin 19 (write protect). IC name should be something with K9GAG08U0M ... with 48 pins
2) then put the power button from RESET to ON for 4-5 seconds
3) then put the power to RESET
4) then make a short between pin 9 and GND and put power button to ON. GND its any metal used for shielding ...
FINALLY: then you see the blue screen.

But somewhere else I read:
U have to touch them one after another first the 12th pin this should make it device reboot then the 19th pin that should remove the write protect.
What is the right way to do with pin 12 and 19?? Thanks in advance!

Hi
Make sure you have a USB lead or an SD card fitted into your unit.
Put it to the off position and connect between the earth and pin 9.
While still holding the pin 9 connection switch to On position. You should see the upgrade screen. You need three hands at this point !
I don't believe pin 12 and 19 are necesssary)
The On to Reset switch position is used to navigate through the upgrade menu.
Good luck.

Excuse me for using this post for a question about a Medion e3212, but I found some bins for Medions in the beginning of this post. Problem is as follows. While copying files to my Medion e3212 with (what later turned out to be) a broken microSD adapter, I can only get to the blue screen to reinstall WinCE. As I had nothing to loose, I have tried about every bin that i could get my hands on - no success. Also, I got a bin file of a Medion e4445 < http://www.4shared.com/file/4MpSElle/winceimg_orig.html >, but I don really know how to use that one. Maybe it was not the Wince that was broken in the first place? Any suggestions are welcome.

I hope you guys can help me:

I have a Mio Moov M610 with the following problem. When i turn on the device it shows the mio animation and then it displays a computer a USB icon and a tablet(gps) and nothing else.
When i conect it to the PC it shows only a Removable disk with some files like :
dump files
extra dump files
device.sig
device

I have read on some forums that there must be another "partition" something with flash ! But mine shows only one thing and that is the removable disk
PS This model doesn't have a SD card slot or a SD Card

What can I do to solve this problem ?

Hi. Can anyone provide me a Navman S60i rom? I have one in restarting loop. I did manage to get an SMFlash image via DiskRW but i don't know how to compile the file in order to write it to my dead device. Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you.

Here is the SMFlash from a good device Navman S60i : http://rapidshare.com/files/235794008/SMFlash_0_17039360.rar

when i'm trying to update the driver it keeps asking for wceusbsh.sys , and i found it in the activesync folder in program files ,is that the right one ?

i've pointed to that one but DNW keeps telling that cannot open the USB device !?
any other ideas ?

csuri,

You need to uninstall the Microsoft drive for USB and install the USB driver that came with DNW.exe.
Then you will have connection.

rgdfg,

Mov M400 does not have SD card slot.

k9ga08... nu such thing, perhaps k9gag08?

Try with this driver. It's enough to backup only first 2 blocks (block0 + block1, ~1MB), read (not dump!!!). In defective device delete full nand, write the 1MB backup (normal, not with OOB) then reset with card containing OS. To simply unlock bootloader menu, delete block16.

@ablbd,
I found the tools, ran them, saved to my sd. Completely as you described it on page 151.
Still did not work.
Now i tried to make a dump in hjtag from the first 3 blocks and block 16 but i keep getting errors like timed out.. something went wrong.

I used drivers i found here for this combo: s3c2443+k9ga08..
Am i doing something wrong ?

There are 2 more things i wonder about.
How can i make a proper backup in case I mess up, like the hjtag dump.
Can i backup the entire nand and flash and put it on my other divise?
Thanx

@ablbd: I try to use SJF2450 and I have problems. After I start SJF he recognise S32450 and after press option 3 for NAND K9GAG08 program display "K9gag08 flash programming" and stop....nothing happends after that. What is a problem? How I can solve this. I need to read boot blocks and write on bricked one.I used H-JTAG with 4bit ECC driver but when I programm driver marks every programmed block as bad. Strange. Please help me!

salut

merci mult.

@ablbd.... I read all posts but cant find any help. You send me driver for H-Jtag for s3c2450+K9GAG08 and I used this driver to read blocks 00 & 01 from working unit. After that I program those two blocks in bricked one but I found after programming if I press verify H-Jtag anounce me an error in verify. By the way, if I read those blocks from just programmed bricked unit and comapre this read with file which I used to program they are same.
Is it some problem with driver?
I prepare SDcard with winceimg, but after I program blocks 00 & 01 and restart unit nothing happened with SDcard inserted. Only black screen.
Of course, before program I erase all blocks in nand.
I also read 200 blocks from working unit and try to copy to bricked one and also got a black screen. I found that blocks from 106 to 200 are empty in working unit.
Any help please?

Thanx.

I'll hook up the new one jo the jtag tonight..

No i have been looking for s3c2440_nr and s3c2443_nr all i found so far are dead links.
Can some one point me in the right direction..
When i ahe a proper backup I'll look in to getting it back on te other one..

thanx again
ablbd Posted - 15 févr. 2013 : 20:14:55
Yes, use s3c2440_nr or s3c2443_nr, they are harmless (read-only). To flash, you will need either a hjtag driver capable of 4bit ECC or you have to combine pages with spares and use a simple driver which is only unlocking write protection (see around page 151...)

Sorry, I don't have them because never came to me a working one nor a defective one with intact bootloaders. My advice: don't give up! Find a working one, run s3c2440_nr.exe's or s3c2443_nr.exe's; there are several versions, must find out which one is working, so you could have working bootloaders from the files generated by them.

Thanx ...

I have not been playing with the jtag, i just hookt it up in the hope of getting the correct files..
I got the divice to play with.. it only had a black screen.
But i followed your advise, and got me a similar divice to get the boot files off.

Is there a how-to i can follow the get the proper files of.. Or can i just use the S3C2440/S3C2443.. Does it explain its self?

I dont want a black screen on this 1 :)

Hello everybody! I'm lost!!! .. not very experienced in that domain and I do need someone to show me the way.
I'll try to be as clear as possible with my questions!

The story first!
I have a Moov S505 which stopped servicing 10 days ago. I turned it on, got a white screen then nothing. I thought battery too low. I turned it off then I plugged it in my PC and turned it on (using the power from the usb plug), I got the black screen loading "SEEKER.R15.00.0747.STF128M" then the orange screen which freezed and nothing more and
realized that my device is no more identified by my pc. I sometimes have an "attempt" from Win XP which tries to locate a driver named "Mio DigiWalker USB Sync" without success and the connections goes out! Cannot get it identified.
I have read each and every post on this forum (158!) related to that and have a "broad" idea on what to do but still yet unclear.
I do not have an img of my s505 only a copy of all files in my gps + keys

So here are my questions:
To get the blue screen : should I use directly the Pin#9 method for this s505? or the one after (page 1 of this forum) with the "short between pin 12(vcc) and pin 19 (write protect)" first then short between Pin#9 and ground?

In order to reinstall my software I only need to format my GPS (according to Mio technician - not Fat 32) then run "SmartST_S505_v6_10_0442.exe" with the install DVD in the DVD reader. In brief I need to have my device connected as a simple mass storage to pc

So my next questions are:
As I have no access to the the GPS I cannot format it of course!
I suppose that when I get the blue screen I can format it right? if so which is the way to format it?
It doesn't seem to be the blue screen as it does the upgrade with FORMAT option? as far as I've understood it seems that I have to choose between "usb or sdcard" for the format and I do not have anything to put on!
So after getting the blue screen is my GPS indentified on the usb plug? (is it what you call to "get the normal screen")? I could then use the format utility of XP (not Fat32 format).

or I think the most relevant maybe
Page 129 apick1 provides the SMFlash img but the link is dead unfortunately! :-(
As I do not find a SMFlash.img of my SEEKER.R15.00.0747.STF128M is it safe using the img "MoovS505_EU_ROM_SEEKER.R16.00.0773.STF128M" on page 1 (am I right that it is an European region one?) and then use the procedure explained on the forum putting the 4 Region and Winceimg files on sdcard and use "format with sdcard" option?
and then try to reinstall all the remainings of the Mio programme I saved in the past (keys included) with a simple "copy"...unfortunately I did not take care to the hiden files ... shame on me :-(
With this last method if it doesn't work I suppose at least my s505 will be identified by my pc and I can format and use Mitac's procedure explained above?

Or any other suggestion on the way to get back my s505?
Pleeease! help me!
Anyway thanks in advance for all you can tell to me on that subject!

I have not much experience with medion's, so just hopping that is works similar to Mio's: keep usb connected and reset device.

Delete either nand block 16 or, better, from block 3 to the end, insert card and reset.

BTW: there is plenty of information in this thread, including jtag procedure...
djuks Posted - 11 févr. 2013 : 13:45:38
Please, I copied first two blocks but how to activate boot menu? I have power and reset buttons, but dont know what to press to go into boot menu. I try combination like explained here but no menu appears. Is it enough only to copy winceimg.bin file on sdcard?
ablbd Posted - 11 févr. 2013 : 06:02:07
Start addr=0, 2 blocks (=1MB), main, then reboot with card containing wince

djuks Posted - 09 févr. 2013 : 19:36:26
@ablbd: Thanks. What have to be a Start RAM address? 0x3000000 or 0x4000000. Init Script have to be empty? And how many blocks to dump? I think bootloader and OS are within first 140Mb about first 300 blocks. I will try to copy those 300 blocks from working one to bricked unit. When program flash I must set programming mode only main program without oob?
ablbd Posted - 09 févr. 2013 : 09:07:03
djuks: Here it is. Be carefull, this driver is generating ECC so use simple block read and not block+oob read.

@ablbd

Dear friend, I read all posts here about JTag but have some problems. please help.
I have two gps units, one perfectly working, and another same type but dead at all, it means flash is erased in full.
Combination is S3C2450 + K9GAG08. I try to run S3C2443_nr.exe on working one and when i dump flash produced pages.hex file is filled with all zeros.
Also, DiskRW not working. Also I have H-Jtag and wiggler but I dont have correct driver files because megaupload links You gave dont work any more.
How can I get usable dump from this device?
one more thing, on bricked device flash have only one bad block at #4708.
