How can I use my Nuvi when it's plugged into the PC? Everytime I plug it in, it goes to data transfer mode and won't allow me to plan my routes or use the touchscreen.
This question was asked in another forum and someone mentioned a rather difficult way to get around it which apparently originated from this forum. I thought I'd offer up this tip in case it could be helpful to others out there wondering how to do this easily.
If you want to use your Nuvi (or iPod for that matter) while it is plugged into the PC, you can click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon which appears in the bottom-right corner. Using a left click, you will see a short menu appear which will list the drive letter for the Nuvi. Simply click on this drive letter which will disable the data transfer mode and bring up the navigation screen but still continue charging the device.
I searched quickly to see if this was already included in the FAQs or tips section and couldn't find it anywhere so hopefully this isn't repeating information already available elsewhere. |

Seems the Garmin Nuvi may have a 'thermistor temperature monitoring circuit, to make sure the battery does not overheat. If the voltage at that NTC input is above a given threshold, the NTC Fault is activated which kills the charging until if the Thermistor signals to the NTC input, the battery has cooled, ie voltage back down below the NTC Signal Threshold.
So I am wondering if your restore normal charging by "CLR Checksums and run the full diagnostic routine" did fix the problem or just take time, with no charging gong on, and the battery cooled down, and lowered the voltage to that NTC pin input, so the NTC Fault was removed and charging able to commence again?
Just leave it for 30 mins (or as long as the Full Diagnostic Routine takes to complete) and see if that NTC Fault clears on its own (as the battery cools down)?
Not saying this is the case but sound logical from a Datasheet on a Battery Charger Control Chip. This has an 'NTC' Negative Temperature Coefficient) Monitor pin that a Thermistor connects to.
I recently bought a 2000mAh Solar Charger (SPC-10) from CDR King for Php580. A set of 4 x Sanyo 'eneloop' batteries was that price. and would still need to buy a4 cell battery holder and Mini-'B' USB cable.
Specifications:
- Solar panel (poly-crystalline): 5.5V 100mA
- USB charging cable: 5V 500mA (current limited)
- Constant Voltage: 4.2V (to save internal battery power)
- Internal Li-ion battery: 3.7V, 2000mAh
- Output: 5.5V/500mAh
- Super long standby time: more than 3 months
- Charging by USB cable: The indication bar will turn blue incrementally until fully charged
- Charging in sunlight: One LED will turn red during charging
Protection: Charging current limited, discharging current limited, protection from overcharging, discharging, over current short circuit
When I ran my Garmin Nuvi from A Dual USB Adaptor in my 12V Power outlet on my Motorcycle, it occasionally came loose, with shock and/or vibrations on rough off-road sections.
Unlike running it off the Garmin 12V Adaptor, where you get 29 Seconds to push it home, or select 'Continue running off Battery), when using this the USB Adaptor and it disconnects from its 12V DC input, my Garmin Nuvi 255 went into USB connect Mode, the rebooted. This means loss of Navigation for more than 30 seconds, and loss of Track Log!
I think the Garmin must detect if it a Power Only USB connection or Power and Data (as you get on a PC.
The reasons for buying this being:-
i) Extend the the run time off Battery.
My Garmin Nuvi 255 (1250mAh Battery as standard)lasts about 3 hours.
ii)Maintain Power to Gamin 255 via USB cable from Battery Pack.
iii) Have a USB to Nokia N95 8GB Charging Cable (2mm Power jack) and /or Min 'B' USB (for charging my WBT-201 Bluetooth GPS Logger)
Getting a 100ma Solar Panel, and a Torch built in, were bonuses.
Whilst Testing with the Diagnostic Screen, to see if it was charging and what the voltages and charging current were, I got this

In a normal way, a unit (Nuvi 710) connected by USB to a computer goes into mass storage mode. If you disconect it, it reboots and goes into navigation mode. So if you connect it again to USB when the first characters appear after rebooting, it will stay in naviogation mode and charging. And all teh funsctions of navigations mode can be used. |

Many would like to charge their GPS while still in map mode when connected to PC
This way we could look at map and plan trips, and still do not need an extra AC adapter. |

I might be new to this, but I don't understand the hassle. I regularly use my 755T with the usb plugged into either ac or dc. Once power is supplied, it goes into mass storage mode, then after 5 seconds, it loads maps and goes into navigation mode. (I'm using Garmin's usb cable)
If plugged into my laptop, it stays in mass storage until I disconnect.

Problems with charging can arrise when installing new batteries bought on some sites. They can be good batteries, but not totaly compatible. I own a 710 Nuvi, and just bought a new battery online, because Garmin would charge me about 120Euros to replace it. I noticed that the original battery has 3 wires Black, Red and a Green one, while the recently bought battery has only the Red and the black. I Installed just connecting the power leads. It worked until the battery was drained. The on test screen, on battery showed NTC fault, and I realised that the green wire carried the information about temperature of Li-Ion battery while charging to avoid explosions. I carefully opened the original old Garmin battery and removed carefully the PCB with SMD where the battery leads and the three coloured wires are connected, and soldered it on the just bought battery, replacing the PCB also present there, taking very care to weld it to the correct polarity on the battery small plates. I first identified them with a voltemeter marking its leads sit a + in red and a - in black before I proceeded with the welding.
It is working fine.

Works fine while you set it to ethernet over usb, just plug the usb cable and it works |

I've read on some other site that switching the Mass storage over usb to ethernet over usb will do the trick of using my 865 while plugged to pc, I will try tonight and write the results here |

My former nuvi 760 used to freeze when I exited from the test menu, it was stucking on the loading os, thus the third solution wasn't working, I had version 4.90, but also with the 4.80 did the same, it only worked with the 2.70 firmware that came with the unit, and that is the case with 2 nuvi 760 units
Anyway, any other ideeas on how tu use my 865t while plugged to pc, except wall charger |

On my Nuvi 760 (Software version 4.80) both method 1 and method 2 work OK but only if the Garmin Lock is OFF. When it is ON, the trouble is that in order to enter the PIN, I have to move the switch back to the centre position and the unit goes back into mass storage mode.
However, all is not lost because freestyler's "third solution" works for me regardless of whether Garmin Lock is ON or OFF.

I just use the usb charger from my mp3 player that plugs in to the wall. When you first plug it in, it looks like it's in PC mode, but after a few seconds it goes in to navigation mode. It aalso does a great job charging my 885T quickly. |

Method 1 works great on my 260. For my 1370 (TWN) and I assume the newer 1xxx series too, safely remove hardware (left click) works on Windows XP. For Vista, simply put the computer in the sleep mode causes my 1370 to reboot into the navigation mode. The latest revision of firmware added a choice that allows you to choose which mode you would like the 1xxx to be in. |

Hello, I have a nuvi 865t and neither of the 2 techniques doesn't works
I even had a third solution and that is to enter the test menu ( pressing the battery icon ~8 sec) and then plug in the usb cable. This way the nuvi doesn't enters the usb mode and then you just exit frm that menu and all work great, well this doesn't work on my nuvi 865t, it just enters usb mode, worked on nuvi 760 and nuvi 250W
Any ideas on how to use the nuvi 865, or 8x5 series while plugged to computer? |

This works on my 760 with 4.60 installed.
Boot the Nuvi and let it go into USB mode (GPS-Computer Icon on lower center of the screen).
Pull the USB cable out of the Nuvi.
When the Nuvi begins to reboot (series 7 message appears where the GPS-Computer Icon was on the screen) immediately plug the USB cable back in to the Nuvi.
If you plugged the cable in in time the Nuvi will boot up in GPS mode. At this point you can shut the Nuvi off and the Charging message will appear on the screen just like it was plugged into an AC adapter. |

I have a Garmin nuvi 760 (sw 4.60) and neither technique 1 nor 2 work for me. It ALWAYS goes back to the usb storage mode. |

For owners of the Garmin Nuvi 880:
I have tried the formal step-by-step method described early on in this thread, via the lock and unlock screen modes, with and without my (in the 880's case) micro SD card in, have tried different approaches in the continuous PC settings and booted up my PC afresh -- tried everything really, including the plug/unplug method -- and met with unsuccessful results in attempting to get the regular navigational/all features screen(s) without an AC adapter or battery operation (e.g., w/USB cable only) on my Nuvi 880.
