I noticed one new pretty cool feature on the 7x5/2x5 series nuvi's that are coming out has Lane Assist. Thinking this is just a software option I wonder if a feature like this would be updatable on a 6x0 series (I have a 680).

They also thoughtfully added a nag screen to my Nuvi 650 that "warns" me every month of my outdated maps. That's the kind of new functionality that is really appreciated by the end user.

After having Garmin GPS since 76S I have seen that Garmin very seldom add new function to already released GPS. I have with other worked on wish list for new function to GPS, like the 60CS, 60CSx and Nüvi 760. The lists has been long with lots of nice request. But Garmin add seldom some from the lists.

Later when Garmin do release a new function from the wish list, they are coming on new GPS and not the already released series.

Another strange thing that Garmin does, is to remove function that many love from the older models.

Garmin should a a basic and advanced function menu, so that the GPS fits the need for most user, both them who only need a navigation unit from A to B and users who likes to user special function.

We can add the EcoRoute feature that was announced on the 8x5 models at CES 2009 and made available as an update on the 7x5 and 2x5 models.

Exactly, thanks for refreshing my memory.

Tho some of the features might be able to be offered to the 7x0's, most will probably not be applicable. Hardware changes, specifically a likely change to a 600mhz system on the 7x5's, will make some of these features impossible to back-add, even in the unlikely case that Garmin would like to.

@Gpspassion, the other feature you're probably trying to remember is MSN2 support.

Most likely not, as discussed previously, other than SiRFInstantFixII that was added to the nüvi 7x0 series (likely planned from the start but delayed) and one other feature that escapes me right now, Garmin have never added new features to existing models. They are generous with bug updates though and they support existing models for long periods of time, unlike other GPS manufacturers that rarely provide updates.
