Posted - 29 août 2004 : 15:13:19 If any of you have a cellphone with a GPRS data plan, please take a look here for more info:
http://jprestonsystems.2mydns.com/
You will need a Windows Mobile 2003 PocketPC with a GPS receiver, and the GPRS internet connection. It actualy works fine with any "always on" internet connection, but the GPRS is a must for using it mobile. Tmobile has free GPRS with any voice plan here in the US. I think in Europe, you pay by the KB of data used....not sure. But this software only sends about 20 bytes per position report.
The way I have it set up: The pocketPc is paired to the cellphone via bluetooth. So I just put the PocketPC somewhere in the car where my 17 year-old daughter wont bother it, and I can see where she is. Well......I have a feeling she parks the car and takes off with her friends, but at least I know where my CAR is.
If any of you happen to have all the gear you need to use this and want to give it a try, I would appreciate any feedback. I havent tested it with anything except my Asus A716 pocketPC, Compact-Flash GPS receiver, and Sony-Ericson T610 cell phone. It's free.

Posted - 30 août 2004 : 01:30:26 Sure, and I'm sure we can get this to work ;-) I wonder where the problem could be, maybe something on my E800, I'll try installing it on another PocketPC tomorrow.

Posted - 30 août 2004 : 00:38:53 well darn....I was hoping all this different equipment was compatible enough that the software would work without a hitch. You are definaltely getting some of the GPS sentences, but not enough. If the cold-restart of the gps doesnt help, I am out of ideas.
by the way...tnx so much for giving it a try....and for your great forum. I came here before I bought my GPS stuff and thanks to this forum, I learned everything I needed to make a purchase.
talk to u later |

Posted - 30 août 2004 : 00:08:43 Not sure, it's getting a fix for sure. The program does seem to "run out of steam" after a couple of minutes becoming pretty sluggish and unresponsive. I am testing with a WiFi connection but that doesn't seem to be the problem here.

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 23:50:52 hmm. I dont know why it would be able to find the satelite lock string, but not the lat/lon strings. If it's receiving data from the GPS, the lat box and long box in the lower left should update, the dot will turn green, and in the top-left you will see the headers for the GPS sentences it is receiving, like $GPRMC, $GPGGA, etc. Maybe you need to do a "cold start" which resets the GPS receiver. The "reset" button on FindME works for my receiver but not sure if it works for other hardware. If you have another program that you know will "cold-start" the GPS, give it a try. |

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 23:34:16 Right, I guess that's a good reason to get moving on that password business ;-) Colorado, eh! Love that place, big fan of Leadville for some reason but haven't been there since December 1997 ;-)
As you may have seen I'm testing with a new account, but although I have a "green" dot it's not pulling up the lat/long. I tried with a Bluetooth GPS and a CF GPS just in case. Running PPC2003 on a Toshiba E800.

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 22:54:55 Sometimes I THINK she is listening, but when I am finished explaining something important to her, she usually just blinks her eyes a few times and says "What a looser".
Actualy, findu.com and my server can be updated manually (lots of typing). The FindMe software will post updates to either server, you just select which server you want from a menu.
But a password is a good idea. For example, I am going to give you a real account name I used this morning when I went to play tennis. I want you to see what an actual tracking map looks like. It shows my route from my house to the tennis courts and back. The account name is wa4xxx. Go ahead and bring that account up, please take a look at the tracking/zoom map. Zoom#2 looks the best. Now, lets say you knew the lat/long of my girl friend's house (if I had one) and you wanted to get me in big trouble. Without a password, you could manualy enter my current position for the girlfiend's house, call my wife, and tell her to go the computer and take a look at where I am. So I better add a password! |

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 22:27:57 Oops...doesn't she listen to you ? ;-) Thanks for clarifying, I'm not sure why you'd need a password for the GPRS version though since updates are automatic? On findu.com it's a manual update I suppose?

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 22:04:01 The way findu.com works is you set up an account (you have to be a licensed ham) with your call sign, like F6XYZ, and a password. The password is only used for posting position reports like this: www.findu.com/inputpos.cgi?password=myPassword&call=F6XYZ&lat=39.1&lon=-90.1
Then to see or retreive the map with this position you send this: www.findu.com/find.cgi?call=F6XYZ
You could add a link to this on a web-page, etc. The only thing the password does is prevent people from posting position reports for you. But as long as someone knows your call sign, they can see your position.
My server is the same, but no password need to update positions, and I use the term "name" instead of a ham radio call sign, but there is really no difference. The hams using my server use their call signs, the non-hams just make up a name. This whole project started as a way to keep tabs on my VERY wild 17 year old daughter. I doubt she would be smart enough to log into my server and mess with the position reports, but now you have me wondering.....hehe

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 21:34:26 Ok, thanks for clarifying, I'm not totally clear on how findu.com and http://jprestonsystems.2mydns.com/ work, I noticed you could send your position to findu too?
I think the password would be a good idea if it's not too much work, especially since I hadn't realized the call code could be made to be a bit more "complex" than just a standard name ;-)

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 21:27:13 the password is only for that www.findu.com hamradio server. My server doesnt use one, unless you consider the name you pick for the account as a password. So without a password, someone you gave your account name to so they can track you could also update your position. I figure if you trust someone enough to see where you are, you can trust them not to post position reports for you, but I may be wrong. It sure would be easy to add though. Since you asked about it I may just go ahead and do that.

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 21:14:27 Yes I was using the simulation mode of GpsGate for testing purposes, I guess it doesn't like what's it's getting ;-) How is the password supposed to work, wouldn't you normally be prompted for it when you pull up that webpage?

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 21:10:48 Hey, gpspassion....It looks like the software isn't receiving data from your GPS unit. The software lets you select com port, but the other parameters are fixed at 4800, No parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit. Perhaps you GPS unit is set up differently? Ox

Posted - 29 août 2004 : 16:23:23 Ha! Didnt see this forum...tnx for moving the post. Yes....it is and will remain free for personal use. The server that it runs on is primarily used for a seperate data aquisition application and is up 24/7. This is a personal project that I have been using for personal use and I am glad to share it. Any luck getting it to post a position report yet? I think the first time you run it, you get a msgbox telling you it cant find a savedData file. It's just to remind you to save your settings. Also, I doubt it will run on older PocketPc's that dont have Windows Mobile 2003. There is a way to bundle the needed libraries and make it a stand-alone application, but it would make the files large and most folks (like me) hate to install huge applications in their PocketPc's, especialy from an unknown source.
