UPDATED 20090725 : The hidden data logger can be activated on the nuvi 1xxx series by a long press on the "compass" on the left side of the "trip computer" screen. As usual you need a satellite lock to activate recording.

UPDATED 20090406 : It turns out the hidden raw data logger has been there all the time, as an "easter egg" requiring a specific sequence that dcnuvi found by accident and that emmexx managed to recreate :

If you make a mistake you must exit the "Where am I" menu and start again. As a side effect the "screen shot" icon appears.
[ed]It's fairly obvious but it puzzled me at first, if you don't have a fix, the menus are greyed out unless logging is already active. I noticed it survives a restart and that you can deactivate the screenshot feature in tools/settings/display.
Tested so far on the nuvi 2x5, 2x5w, 550, 760, 755.
UPDATED 20090316 : Raw Tracklog can be now be enabled again on the nuvi 7x0 with software v4.60, see details on page 28.
REMINDER : as suggested by a forum member, this has already been discussed before, but a reminder can never hurt, flashing your GPS with an unofficial firmware version (be it to enable the raw logger or revive your dead GPSwith the "cure firmware) is something you are doing under your sole responsibility and it means you will not be able to get support from Garmin in case of a problem with your GPS in the future.

UPDATED 20080205 - HOW TO KEEP THE HIDDEN LOGGER WHEN UPDATING : quite by accident I realized that the "hidden track log" feature that was quickly removed by Garmin actually survives a software update, provided the logging mode was active prior to the update. z.entropic wrote a how to if you want to use that trick and popej updated his nutrak conversion tool.
UPDATED 20071117 : the v3.50 update for the 2xx series REMOVES the hidden logging mode, see here for the changelog from v3.40 to v3.50.
UPDATED 20071111 : hidden log feature can be activated on the 7xx series too, tested to work with FW2.20. Compared to the built-in track feature it records the raw data apparently, not the "snapped to road" data.

I just updated my Nuvi 250 to 3.40 and I notice that Garmin has added the possibility to record the travel log. This features could be found in the hidden menu which could be accessed by pressing and holding on the speedometer for about 10 sec. Press next to go to the Travel log screen. From this, I could start a new log or replay an existing log. I haven't tried to connect the Nuvi to the PC to see what I could do with the log files. Does anyone has more experience with this new feature?

REMINDER 20120707 : Jotne reports that if you leave the hidden track log stored in the internal memory of your Nuvi it can grow in size over time. It is possible that the file can become so big that little free space remains in internal storage and this can cause the unit to slow down considerably. Of course this is a much bigger issue on devices with only 2GB of internal storage space. |

I have a nuvi 1450. I succeeded in getting both the .bin and .gpx raw diagnostic track logs. The problem: The format of the .bin log is unfamiliar to me. My guess is that it has been encrypted. Has anybody done any work on this type of file? I have been able to get some header information, It begins with "LOG:" then I believe the next field is seconds of the week (4bytes) and the header size looks to be 128bytes total followed by all the records. It looks like the number of bytes per record varies, is that possible?. I suspect that may be a clue as to the type of encryption. If somebody knows the type of encryption I am willing to work on it to decrypt the data. |

No change. There is gpx mode in new devices, understanding bin is not necessary to have a tracklog.

Thanks for the tip indeed, here's another one on a related topic : the latest version of Pixel K's GPX Editor (beta section) has a very useful new feature for those trying to extract a meaningful track from the GPX archives recorded by Garmin nuvi (and maybe other) GPS systems. It's a "rolling" archive so it means there well be some "backtracking" going on when they are assembled as well as many data points being doubled up. Now a simple right click will take care of this problem. |

My old Nüvi 765 suddenly added 2 minutes to the boot time. I do not remember exactly when it happen, it may have been slower and slower over the time. I started to investigate what was the reason for this. I thought it was the number of maps I had on the unit and deleted nearly all maps, but no luck. There was also plenty of free spaces on the internal drive.
So by some coincident I was looking in the raw log folder (I have always raw log on), there was nearly 700M of raw log data
Deleting it and wow what a different in boot time. Just like getting a fresh new GPS :)
It may be posted in post #1 as a reminder to other that lots of log files may slow down the GPS.

Hi,
I have a 3790 and have 3 questions:
1) In RAW Logger mode are the coordinates stored in 2D or 3D?
2) Does the automatic trip logger store 2D or 3D points and if I place the unit in pedestrian mode, will the stored coordinates not be snapped to road locations?
3) The time interval between stored points is 1 second in RAW Logger mode; What is it for the TRIP LOG mode?

295w Raw Logging
To start recording:
Setting>Press battery icon 10 seconds>Test pages>gps>gps info
Touch > Start NMEA Logging
Touch>Start SNR Logging.
The unit will continue to log at intervals of 1 second. Until:
1. Unit is powered down.
2. Unit is connected to PC.
3. Command to stop NMEA and SNR Logging.
The unit will record vast amounts of data if left in sleep mode.
Connect unit to PC in mass storage mode.
Go to: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/
Get started now. Browse:
My Computer> Garmin Nuvi (J)>Garmin Folder>debug>nmea folder>
Gps_log_nmea0.txt >open
In gpsVisualizer: Choose output format: >select GPX
Click GO
Click Download
Save to Temp file.

First off, many thanks to neadrenalin for making the original tracklog patch and sharing it with us.
Thanks also to TurboCCC for the RGN_Tool that I used to get neadrnalin's firmware on my nuvi 200 with hardware id 0834. After the fact I managed to get the device into the mode to use the updater.exe software but I find it much easier to just override the version with RGN_Tool and save as a GCD.
Looking at the differences between the original 5.00 software and neadrenalin's patched software I managed to figure out enough of what it was doing to modify it to move his patch code to a better location that not only gets rid of the stray color pixels in gray borders of buttons but it also helps the device boot more quickly due to reducing the display of the WARNING message from 10 seconds down to 1 about one second. Eventually I'll probably manage to get rid of the WARNING message completely. I also thought I might rearrange the hidden menu to make the tracklog menu show up first when pushing the speedometer so you don't have to hit the "next" button.
I'd welcome any knowledge as to further understanding of the inner workings of the firmware if neadrenalin or anyone else cares to share. I'd really like to add the ability to have recent city(s) to choose from instead of having to select the state and spell out the city. I'd <really> appreciate it if someone can help me better understand the procedure for calculating the offset values in ARM assembly. As it is, when I needed to relocate a branch in the firmware, I would just change part of it and then reload the file in a disassembler until I got the right address! It usually took tens of tries before I succeeded.
Finally, here is a link to my patched version of 5.00 firmware for the nuvi with hardware id 0834. I've included a version to log to internal flash as well as one to log to an SD card.

For off-road, yes definitely you will need the right tool for the job. For on-road the routes can be edited and controlled with enough "shaping points" to force the GPS to conform to where you want to go. See the link in my signature for details.

I am looking for a true "track" capability, any routes brought into a 7XX are subject to re-routing according to its routing algorithm. Looks like a real off road GPS is the only way to go. |

OK, now I think I get it. jsolo is correct, but there's a fairly decent workaround.
Transfer the track from your GPS to BaseCamp. Select the track and in the Edit menu drag down to Create Route From Track. Load the new route into the GPS. Import the route on your GPS into the active list.
