Posted - 24 sept. 2008 : 01:29:21 Updated May 2009 : Map update also available in North America now. Updated 20080924 : Got confirmation from TomTom that this program is Europe only for now, apparently they'll see how it goes there before implementing it in the US. You wonder what's stopping them from roling it out at the same time, hopefully Garmin's own map update program to be announced on October 15th will fix that ;-)
Good news, they have adjusted their discount table for the "map refreshing" that needs to be done before you can subscribe, and it's more "generous" :
Map on device < 3 months – no entry fee Map on device 3 – 6 months – ±85% discount Map on device 6 – 9 months – ±75% discount Map on device 9 – 12 months – ±60% discount Map on device >12 months – ±50% discount
Posted 20080923 - As we had sensed a few weeks ago when TomTom released the v725/v810 maps at full price, they had to come up with a new policy to allow their users to have up-to-date maps at a reasonable price. This has now happened with the TomTom Map Update Service launched concurrently with the new v2.4 version of TomTom HOME.
Under this new policy, users will be able to subscribe for one year of map updates at a discount (about 60% of the current price of an update) the condition being that they have the latest maps when they subscribe. If they don't they will be able to purchase them at a discount ranging from 10% to 85% based on the "freshness" of the maps.
Not as good as Navigon's FreshMaps ($79 for 12 updates over 3 years) but this is still a good offer, and it will be interesting to see what Garmin have in store for us with their own program to be disclosed in October. See below how the "TomTom Map Update Service" works in detail :

Posted - 29 sept. 2008 : 09:22:43 Sorry for the confusion, I was in a hurry and I didn't understand it right. Now I have it up and running. I've paid 20,85 #8364; for the map of Spain, Portugal and Andorra (v725) and 20,85#8364; for the subscription for a year. That's a total of 48,65 #8364;.
I already have updated my TomTom One v3 with the latest map. Now I'll have to verify which correctios that I made are already present and which have to be applied once again (annoying, but there aren't that many.) |

Posted - 29 sept. 2008 : 07:50:20 I must add that "latest map" have to mean "current map", that is, this version you are upgrading to. Or did they relase one version in late July och August? Almost everyone will have to pay to get up-to-date. |

Posted - 28 sept. 2008 : 23:25:11 Ok, but what's the price you paid, it got somehow scrambled in your previous post ;-) |

Posted - 27 sept. 2008 : 20:57:30 Yes you would lose your mapshare changes, since they wouldn't be adapted to the new maps, that may or may not (most likely) have fixed the problem.
For your settings you might be able to keep them by copying the mapconfig.cfg file, worth a try.
@gatorguy - thanks for looking it up, but it seems to me the pricing is identical for a region (being a country or small group of country), except it's in £ versus € - now if you're getting Europe vs a region it's going to be more expensive of course. Not sure why Spain wouldn't be €27.80 too but maybe igalan got European maps not Spanish maps. |

Posted - 27 sept. 2008 : 19:42:32 I purchased the update yesterday, about 800 SEK for a year for my 930T. I had three months old maps they said. It's about three months since I bought it and I know I updated the maps once thru the "latest map"-service. But they probably use their internal map dates when figuring out the age of the map. Anyway, that's the small part of the problem.
The major drawback is that the favourites and home location were erased and this is really bad! Add to this that all my personal corrections to roads that I had made to make my unit behave correct were also gone! None of them are incorporated in the new map so I am back to the state when I bought the unit.
This will happen every three months now as I update the map!!! This is insane!
The restore seems to only use the latest backup, which I made after the update as TomTom suggests this. And even if I could restore an old backup I do not know if it would ruin the upated map.
Until recently my only gripe with the 930T was the failing voice navigation but now I am getting tired of this "delete all" behaviour of the TomTom software. Heck, I can't delete one favourite withut getting a "Are you sure?" question and here the update just erases everything without even telling me! |

Posted - 27 sept. 2008 : 19:01:23 A couple of user posted map update offers from TomTom:
From a British owner "got my 730T yesterday and have just updated my maps. 2 x map updates for Western & Central Europe £ 25.90 4 x Quarterly updates @ £ 12.95 per quarter £ 51.80 TOTAL: £ 77.70
and from another British owner: "have just purchased the Great Britain & Republic of Ireland from v715 to v810 for £13.90 (cost -75%). . . and the Update Service for £27.80. . . and installed successfully to my 520.

Posted - 27 sept. 2008 : 17:05:12 Your numbers don't come out right, I'm surprised the pricing would be different from one region to the other. The €27.80/year is for the yearly subscription, the "refreshing" must natrually be done first if need be. |
| igalan |
Posted - 27 sept. 2008 : 16:51:24 It's not the same here. First you have to purchase the latest map, in my case it's priced at 20#8364;. Then you can subscribe for 50#8364;/year. It's a good deal for 4 maps so I'm going to subscribe, |

Posted - 26 sept. 2008 : 12:57:39 Pretty reasonable, €27.80/year for France, should be the same for Spain, you can verify that by connecting your ONE to TTH v2.4 |
| igalan |
Posted - 26 sept. 2008 : 12:49:46 But how much is the subscription for a single region? If the price is right, I may consider it. But since I don't rely on GPS navigation too heavily it should be cheap or else I'll stick to purchasing one map every year. |

Posted - 24 sept. 2008 : 22:34:17 I don't think that really matters, if anything Navigon have the best map update offer and they can say what they're saying now, that they are doing some testing in Europe before rolling it out in the US.
TomTom have adjusted their discount table for the "map refreshing" that needs to be done before you can subscribe, it's more generous ;-)

Posted - 24 sept. 2008 : 22:17:06 I was a little surprised that TT elected not to offer the same service to the US. By waiting until after Garmin announces theirs it will leave the impression that TomTom is reacting to Garmin rather than leading. Quite unlike them. [EDIT SEE PM] |
