nuvi has service mode (called PRE BOOT MODE) in which unit stays operable for some functions, such as firmware recovery.

To access this mode hold POWER and do not release it.

g7towin can access unit this mode and read/write some data (almanach, time, versions...)

Mapsource CAN NOT write maps in this mode, cause of nuvi limited capabilities. The main way to access maps - use USB Mass Storage Device Mode.

You can not revert firmware to older version using gupdate.gcd method.

Both files for service firmware 2.60 have right CRC and available to download.

Latest cure+original versions for different HWID:
ID 0660
http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_v410_ID0660_all_en_cure_no_gpx_no_maps_no_bootloader_gupdate.rar

ID 0834
http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_v410_ID0834_all_en_cure_no_gpx_no_maps_no_bootloader_gupdate.rar

ID 0760 (TAIWAN Version!!!)
http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_ID0760_tw_v410.rar

HOW TO know what HWID you have in your nuvi:
1. disconnect usb
2. shift-and-hold power button
3. attach usb
4. let windows to detect and install your device
5. run g7towin
6. select menu gps-get gps id
7. find appropriate ID in the list

NanaimoRick Posted - 04 août 2012 : 16:12:30
All Garmin preinstalled map files are locked to a specific device so someone could not legally just send you a gmapprom.img file and expect it to work on your Nuvi. Although it maybe possible to obtain a working map file, it would not be possible without being in violation of copyright laws. Any discussion of trading maps and other illegal file copying is not permitted on this forum.
mattiash Posted - 04 août 2012 : 15:50:21
I copied the files on the sd gmapprom.img and saw all completed on the garmin gps but will restart in search of the map, you can send a map gmapprom.img
cesarolivera Posted - 04 août 2012 : 15:19:55
Try downloading and copying to garmin folder, any file gmapprom.img, that is the file where pre programed maps are stored in the memory.

Hi, I launched this file 066001000260.rgn with update and now is the writing system software missing, then I launched this file 066001000260no_maps_noGPX.rgn update with this error but no update fileplease re.run updater from the command line and specify the directory containing the update etc.. as continuous
mattiash Posted - 03 août 2012 : 21:36:33
webupdater recognizes, however, tells me the update file not found, I can update it with GUPDATE.GCD files from sd but when loading the maps after you restart what can I do.
please where can I find a firmware update and thanks firmware.bin
NanaimoRick Posted - 03 août 2012 : 17:27:56
The above translates to:

Mattiash Hello, I end up discarding the gps but maybe I can help you to try with your GPS, the idea is to update the firmware of the GPS, you got several ways to connect the gps if your pc recognizes it as upgrading from webupdater of garmin, if the pc will recognize it but the webupdater not updated, you use a software called firmware updater and a. bin that you can download from this forum.
The difficulty occurs when the pc does not recognize it, then you must use the same program with a firmware updater. Bin and for the updater Acknowledge what you need to connect the GPS to the PC and turn on the gps and hold the power button for a period long, squeeze it in the updater autodetect button until your GPS and hold the power button when it appears in the updater squeeze it ok and that you are sending the new firmware to your gps. I hope you resolve the problem, Greetings
Welcome mattiash. If you've formatted your 250 and do not have a complete backup of your unit then you are probably out of luck. Although it's possible to restore most of the files by connecting your Nuvi to a computer and running programs like Garmin's Webupdater, it is not possible to restore the map files to the GPS without purchasing then from Garmin or an authorized Garmin reseller.
mattiash Posted - 03 août 2012 : 14:46:24
Hello, I apologize for the 'English but use a translator, I read this topic, but I did not understand anything, I accidentally formatted my garmin nuvi 250 and I do not know what to do now in charge stops to load the maps and restart tell me what I can do thanks.

Hi
I followed a lot of what has been wrote here and got my 250w (ID 737) software moved back to 2.6 then up to 4.
using the .rgn files and updater.exe I got rid of the missing maps and re-start problems.
The Garmin web updater causes most of my problems.
My remaining problem is the GPS software, my current sw version shows as 0.00s
and after 3 hours outside with a clear view of the sky it has done nothing!!
if i use the web updater it dowloads an update then constantly tries to update the software
showing a message on the screen updating 1% then update complete 30 seconds later it does the same again.
I removed the 006B047800.bin file from the RemoteSW folder to stop it repeating.
is there a .rgn file that can be used to install the GPS software?

Hi. Actually, cure firmware that I gave to you should have disabled reading all files. But the problem is still here, so i think it's not because of corrupt files. Maybe it's because of corrupt filesystem? Ask ddabcd277 for help. He knows how to restore filesystem headers.

Hello Kunix, i have an streetpilot c510 from a friend that restart like my nuvi 270, but the difference is that i can access to de mass storage unit, so i delete the pois folders and it solve the problem, you can modify the firmware from my nuvi 270 so it delete the pois folder?[ed - multiple ?]

thanks

kunix Posted - 01 oct. 2011 : 17:02:20
@cesarolivera
Okay, don't give up. There are not so much places in firmware that call reboot sequence. I think we can just check all of them. And then find the reason of reboot.
cesarolivera Posted - 01 oct. 2011 : 13:27:24
The device is restarting with or without the cable connected.
kunix Posted - 01 oct. 2011 : 08:23:41
Is your device restarting or turning off just after 'Loading maps' appears? Is unit restarting when you start it with disconnected USB? I'm asking because when crashing firmware turns unit off. If unit is restarting then firmware does it 'intentionally'. Also USB cable will turn on the unit anyway so disconnect it.
cesarolivera Posted - 01 oct. 2011 : 01:41:49
yes is the only file i have in the folder, and do not work.
I will try if you can make a non.crashing firmware with it, i have nothing to loose.

Thanks again for all.
kunix Posted - 01 oct. 2011 : 00:45:44
Huh, strange. Are you sure you flash needed RGN file? Maybe there are a few of them in the folder?
As a last resort I can try to make a non-crashing firmware. It won't crash even when crash actually occurs. But it can hang up instead of crashing :) So no success guaranteed.
cesarolivera Posted - 01 oct. 2011 : 00:25:45

Give me a link to firmware for your unit. I'll try to make my own cure version. Maybe it will help you. At least it won't make things worse.

Hello, i have a nuvi 270 with id 0660, that show "loading maps" and restart alone, i download the cure file and load it in pre boot mode with de updater.exe file, the program shown me that all is correct done, but when i disconnect my unit it began doing the same, its starts and when show "loading maps" it restart.

Hello everyone,
I had read this forum for like 1 week, I finally decided to flash my almost new nuvi 250w, because it just turn on connected to a PC and didn't pass from the loading bar with the PC.
So I decided to flash it, I recognize I couldn't find my ID because the g7towin kept saying "Port timeout", so I decided to use it with the Updater.exe, the flash according to the computer finished OK, although while flashing the screen putted a Garmin name on top of other (seemed blurry) and then put on a white screen.
The flash finished (OK supposly) and the screen kept being white, so I unplugged the garmin and it just turn off.
After that, couldn't turn it on, not even connecting it to my computer using pre-boot combination.

Any advice? Please tell me it's not damage :(

hi, new member here. i am trying to add TTS to my nuvi 200w.

when i use g7towin, i am unable to get the GPS ID, it gives me an error message. i am not sure if the id is needed for adding tts to the gps.

here is what info i see under my GPS About screen:
nuvi 200W
software version 4.00
Unit ID: xxxxxxxxxx
Audio Version 2.20
GPS SW Version 3.00s

Can i just go ahead and use the zip file "Enabling_TTS_on_205w.rar" and follow instructions or do i need to do something else first?

i have read the whole thread from the beginning and getting quite confused.

continued :
finally i was able to find the ID, using g7towin.
software: 4.00
ID: 737

1. After I put the world map as gmapsupp under /Garmin folder, the nuvi stocked on loading maps bar. Is there anybody now how to recover it? Now I even can not enter the USB storage mode.

Answer: You have to start your device to have disks. OK.
The main idea - to start the device and delete these gmapsupp.img wrong file. (or another "bad map" file img). How to do it if the unit does not start?

Let's use the updater, PRE-BOOT mode and some modified self-made service firmware.
http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_en_v260_recovery_no_maps_visible.rar

Unpack this file and start the device in the pre-boot mode. (hold the POWER button until the LOADER message appears) Pay attention that PRE-BOOT mode string is not displayed by 2xx nuvi, but other version such as 3xx and 6xx display it.
Attach the device usb.
Run updater and select nuvi.
Click ok and proceed. Agree with updater if any additional messages appeared.
If LOADER appeared on the screen you may release POWER button and wait until unit flashed.

After success flashing unit restarts. (if you used WebUpdater before - gupdate.gcd needs to be deleted too! because of unit automatic firmware update after boot if this file exists, now it is no need in it, we will made it manually)
Now unit should boot! And there is only basemap shown (no gmapsupp, no gmapprom, gmapprom1 visible).
And now you can attach it as a Mass Storage Device and DELETE wrong gmapsupp (or whatever you need).
Then you need to make flash for usual firmware for unit. I prefer usual firmware loaded in PRE-BOOT mode, I hate gupdate.gcd :)

So, download the file
http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_en_v260.rar
and use it as I described above.
Now your nuvi is fully operational and have no "bad maps".

2geeks. I made the service firmware manually and tested it successfuly today on my nuvi200. It works.

2gpspassion. You may stick this question too and files. Be free to copy this content to another forums, it really can help people.

The main idea to create restoring file is to rename texts like "gmapsupp" to something strange "umapsupp" in the firmware code. So, unit starts, searches umapsupp.img and does not find it - we are lucky, we need it :)

Hi neadrenalin, my name si martin from argentina,i`m sorry for my english, i have a nuvi 200, this can`t power, only showme the logo garmin and turn of, and can`t recognized the massas storage, i try all firmwares services rng and nothing. w7wingo showme version and id 660 and then error de usb, the version change with type the firmware flashing, i deed help you for get up, thanks.

Once it finished, I had to power the unit on while holding the bottom right of the screen to be able to delete the user data. (Have to select it quickly as the unit was resetting)
Then I was able to connect the unit to the computer and use webupdater software from Garmin to upgrade the software to the latest.

Now the unit works like a charm.

If anyone needs the service FW for a NUVI 250 ID 0851 I can email it to you.

Good night, my client formatted your Nuvi 260W and now have no access to USB memory using the same method (PRE BOOT MODE) the GPS is recognized by Windows but is not recognized the drive. Is there a "Cure" for HWID 0835? Thank you.
ripcord Posted - 13 juil. 2010 : 00:10:07
OK - now my nuvi will startup correctly so long as I have a micro SD card in the slot. Even if there is no map! it will still start correctly, but will not be recognised by windows. Before this problem, I tried to format the memory, but the cable was pulled at the start. I beleive this formatting error caused an error with the nuvi internal memory - but the firmware is ok. Would anyone have an advice on how to fix the internal memory? Thanks!

Hi everyone. I have been reading this thread for a long time, but I am unable to get any further with my problem.

I deleted files from my nuvi 250 to try to fit a larger map on internal memory. Map did not fit, so I left it with no map and turned it on. Now, I was getting the problem described here. My nuvi would start, not find maps, restart, not find maps, restart and so on!
Also, when I entered PRE BOOT mode, the device appeared briefly in Device Manager, but it was not seen as a drive.

I took advice from here. I added a new map called \Garmin\gmapsupp.img to a Micro SD card and put this into my nuvi. Success! My nuvi started and it seemed to work. It can navigate properly. But I cannot search for city locations, and I have no speech files.

Now, I still have the problem where it will not be recognised as a USB drive!! I have all original files backed-up but I cannot put them onto it. g7toWin says the Software Version is 5.0 and the Hardware Id is 851. It is strange that it navigates ok - but will not be seen as USB drive. The USB connection must be OK because it is seen briefly in PRE BOOT mode.

I could really use some help on this! It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by "half way true installing my maps kido pulled off usb cable," but if you are by any chance attempting to copy maps from another device it will not work; they are locked to one nuvi.

Hi
Nuvi 260W ID 0737 SW Version 400
Unfortunately I had not read the (DO NOT UNPLUG USB AFTER FORMATING) advice, and without thinking, unplugged the USB cable after reformatting but before copying filesystem back to internal flash drive.
Now I have common problem of boot re-cycling to 'Loading maps' and no access to USB drive.
I can successfully write .rgn with updater.exe and have tried a number of cure files (073701000400cure2.rgn, 073701000400.rgn), as well as writing .rgn after battery has run down.
As I do not have any files on the freshly formatted internal flash drive I think I now have a brick.
I do have flash drive image and backup of files.
Is there a solution to reload files onto internal flash ?

I resolved my problem for my Nuvi 250.

I had to make my own version of the service FW 250 ID0851, with all references to gupdate.gcd, img, zip etc removed.

Updater then worked to load the FW.

THanks to all the great knowledge in the Forum that llowed me to figure this out. (No replied to my posts directly, but the moderator pointed me to this thread and it allowed me to get all the information that I needed)

I have a Nuvi 250 and it has the symptom of resetting right after loading maps... and just keeps on looping.

It is ID 0851 Series 2 with FW version 5 on it.

I have tried using updater (Correct id) 460 version, once it uploads the loader screen is on and just sits there. Is it due to the fact that I can not load anything earlier than vrsion 5. software? or am I missing a step in the updarer to have it reset and then work?

Any help is appreciated.

With g7towin I get the ID

Nuvi 12xx Series Software Version 2.30 ID: 971
Unit ID: 3625160060; USB Comm via bulk Pipe

Where WebUpdater save the downloaded file, and how I can extract RGN file from downloaded file.
Please Help!

Hello, I read this topic and don't find any solution for my problem with Nuvi 1250. Is there a rgn file for my device.
Problem: When power on without USB it show Garmin startup screen, after that loading maps and freezes on next screen. No connection with PC.
When I plug the USB device is power on, and green tape showing on the bottom of the screen, but after that device freezes again.

seriously.. thanks for the quick reply... totally in your debt...
neadrenalin Posted - 30 janv. 2010 : 19:58:44
raistlin86,
you have newer device and your HWID is 1091. It has glamour new interface like 2x5w's nuviz have.

Other versions can not suit your device.
Please follow http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=117599 and find necessary firmware there.

Trying to update unit with something else can brick unit totally. I hope your unit still bootable and can write 'software missing'. In other case you have to return unit to exchange (if warranty present).

greetings,

I have a US version garmin 260w and apparently i've bricked the thing by updating it using the webupdater... It was downloading the latest hardware, installing it and then it just froze up... The device rebooted itself and all i get now is the "system software missing" message. The device is not in US now thus i'm unable to get it to garmin USA for a fix. Would be grateful if anyone here can help me fix it up.

I've tried fixing it using the .rgn file from http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=95274 using the HWID 0834 file. I'm unable to get the hwid using g7towin... all i get from g7towin is the following
nuvi 2 series software version 6.10 ID:1091
unit id: 3676400549; usb comm via bulk pipe

i've tried the 0660 and 0760 files and it won't update.. as for the 0834 file (083401000410cure.rgn) is able to start the update process but somehow the garmin device just disconnects itself from the usb and i get an error message from updater.exe. The garmin device shows the "loader loading..." message with the garmin brand logo... It is stuck there i have to reset it (hold the power button to the left for a few seconds to restart it).

Please help me figure a way to fix the problem as the device is pretty much an everyday tool for me to travel around for work...

Hi, I have a nuvi 200. It was worked ok for 1 year. Last week, when I try to enter destiny an ´memory waypoiny is full´ error appear. I power off and power on the nuvi but now a memory full appear in the screen. After two o three power off -on cycles only appear a garin logo screen for 3 seconds and then the nuvi is powr off. If I use an externa source (USB or car charger) the nuvi stay with the logo screen. I have used g7towin in pre boot mode to obtain HWID: 660 and a updater.exe with the cure firmware 2.6, 4.1 with no result.
Can anybody help me? Any ideas?

Sory for my poor english

Thanks

Thanks neadrenalin for the reply. I'm sticking to 4.1 but I kind of miss track logging, which is why I've been trying to get to 5.0 tracking version. I hope this is not too much to ask but is it possible to hack 4.1 to enable tracking?
neadrenalin Posted - 17 août 2009 : 18:48:52
baffled,
as pouchX said in this casea you need data chip programmator Wellon for 1k$. Pity. Try to reach him via email, probably he can help you with soldering iron.

smokie2069,
probably you have another kind of the problem, that can't be cured with published version. Try to reach garmin support or warranty repair (if you are lucky). I have no idea how to help you.

nik83,
if your unit is running do not try to refine it. Now satellites are changing and some signal glitches can occur.

People, your damaged units reached this state via different ways. There is no 'absolute cure' firmware.

nik83 Posted - 17 août 2009 : 03:17:39
I too need help from neadrenalin. Once my "nuvi 200 id834 firmware 5.0 tracklog SD" froze at loading maps, I used the cure firmware 4.1, then original 4.1 rgn to fix it. After that, I tried upgrading to 5.0 original, and also 5.0 track log versions but these versions either :

1) make the garmin stuck in reboot loop at the logo
2) simply kept asking me to do initial setup almost every startup, after that, I am unable to change vehicles or navigation view(stuck at track up, but in the map it shows 3D and refuses to change to real track up or north up)
3) froze when navigation and I had to press reset to turn it off. Results in lost favorites.

These happened after I tried to upgrade from 4.1 to 5.0. I hope that the above "symptoms" I've described allow neadrenalin to guess what's going on, and possibly try to help. 4.1 is working fine for now, but it seems to get satellite slower than 5.0. Maybe someone can provide a 4.4 gupdate or rather, rgn as I am unable to find the gupdate.gcd for it. I heard 4.3 is problematic with the voice feedback.

I have also tried to check if there is anything wrong with my current.gpx, pois, and map files. I even deleted all my voices, help, text, and vehicles but they make no difference.

help from neadrenalin . I have read many posts or attempts to fix nuvi 200 from rebooting itself by displaying LOADING MAPS screen and then rebooting. I have tried many different files from this topic and have had no luck . I have tried everything , so please neadrenalin if you can solve this for me than i would be grateful. So my nuvi is 200 , in g7towin it says my device is ID:660 , software version 4.10 , unit id : 3377301215 . I have tried the cure file on page 1 that is for unit 660 and version 4.10 . the 066001000410cure.rgn file downloads fine to the nuvi , but when it reboots it does the same as before and there is NO Mass storage on my PC to access the nuvi. I have also tried 066001000410en.rgn and also 066001000500.rgn , but still no luck and also seems like you mentioned that nuvi doesnt want to upgrade to version 5.0 like i tried because in the g7towin program it still displays as version 4.10 . So please do let me know if you need more info , and thx for any help .

neadrenalin Posted - 17 mars 2009 : 17:29:16
mchipser,
All the nuvis 2x5 have the same firmware. The differencies are stored in non-volatile ram as some bits. Firmware at start determines which hardware is running and fills internal variables. Regarding this TTS and other functions are enabled/disabled.

jaskha,
Look at other topics and compare cure/original firmwares published there by me. If you never heard winhex and total commander words - you need to stay and wait for the solution.

Well I would like to just send out a thanks to neadrenalin for his great tools and the work he has done on firmwares, and to the others that have contributed to this great website.

Unfortunately, my nuvi has completely died. It will no longer power up at all. It just stays dead. It is not the fault of the firmware, but I believe it to be an internal malfunction. While hitting the hard reset button, with the usb cable plugged in and the power switch held, it turned off, like it always does, but this time it didn't turn back on. I believe when it was stuck in that reboot loop before a few days ago, it damaged something. I probably could have saved it at tht time, had I not left it rebooting for so long. Now I am afraid it is finished.

Perhaps I can buy a nuvi on ebay that has a cracked screen for cheap and swap out the parts.
Do all the 2XX series (200/250/260/270)take the same screen? What about the 2X5 series (205/255/265/275)? Maybe the 5XX too (500/550). I know externally they look the same, but is the ribbon cable/connectors the same?

Thanks again everyone for your help!!
neadrenalin Posted - 10 févr. 2009 : 07:03:29
Clutchy, email to my profile and I'll give you pouchX contact. Also he has a site. :) Try to use google.
I think you have to make full reset. Use different rgn versions for your nuvi.
For example, you have 5.0, so find gcd with older version and create rgn. Then flash rgn - this erases user memory to the initial state. Then use 5.0 again. Possible, but no more than 50% guarantee :(

Published firmwares by garminfrance mostly helpful in case SSM (system software missing) problem for dedicated nuvi's model.

I am glad to see that more than one person can use my tools for rgn creation, It is helpful for SSM problem. Simply take all the nuvi models, create rgn for them all and SSM solution is done. Then cure - mod rgn.

Clutchy Posted - 10 févr. 2009 : 06:40:26
Thanks for the links, unfortunately the link for the Nuvi 2XX links to a GUPDATE.GCD file not an RGN. I made an rgn file from it using neadrenalins tools, but I still get the same results. Well actaully now I get a system software missing error. Flashing back to the ver5.0 w/ tracklog takes me back to the garmin freeze screen.

@NanaimoRick... the links that you posted do not work, I had to go to the french page.
Edit.... oops, I see you fixed them :)
NanaimoRick Posted - 10 févr. 2009 : 06:16:04
Thanks for the link Boss. Since all of the software links posted there are to the Garmin France site I don't expect I'm breaking any copyright rules by posting them here. Just a reminder that I don't have any idea whether these files will work or not or if they may further damage your Nuvi (if that is possible [g]) and post the links here only for the benefit of members that are not able to translate the french website:

"Please find enclosed the link for the failure of your device.

Download the link that corresponds to your device and save the file on the desktop of your pc.

Unzip the files by right-clicking on: EXTRACT HERE.

From there, drag the file. RGN on the file. EXE

Check the USB ok then.

The upload is performed, you can then restart the machine to start the load of updates.

Note that this message comes from a switch, and that time the device has been too hastily disconnected from the pc ... which is repaired immediately.

Check this website, yeah it's in french but scroll down to the link that shows the type of Nuvi you have. Download the zip file. (scan it, I did) then install. It has a updater of it's own. Bought my Nuvi 250W back to life after days of "software missing:

I did have to re-boot a few times but it finally worked. Let me know how it goes...

Well no luck for me. I have modified the rgn file to bypass possible messed up files. I can flash anything on there, but it always just freezes with "Garmin" displayed. Is anyone aware of the pinouts for the test points on the motherboard. I can flash the nand, if I knew the test points and had a NAND image for the 200.

I have attempted to email pouchX but this forum will not allow me to mail him.
neadrenalin Posted - 07 févr. 2009 : 22:12:36
I have no cure for it yet. Main idea to find with hex-editor and change to something else in rgn file such strings as: .gcd (to prevent self update with gupdate.gcd), .img (gmapsupp gmapprom, etc maps that are probably wrong), .gpx (all poi files). They are unicode.
Try to compare original and cure versions (for nuvi 200, nuvi 500) and you will understand what is changed. Topics are on this forum.
Clutchy Posted - 07 févr. 2009 : 21:59:00
@ neadrenalin.... do you have a v5.0 cure file for id 0834 or can you tell me what to hex edit to create my own?
Clutchy Posted - 06 févr. 2009 : 06:38:37
Ok, I found i can still get pre-boot if I ...
1: connect usb cable first
2: hold power switch in on position
3: then press the hard reset button

as long as I hold the power button I can flash using updater and your custom 5.0 firmware w/ tracklog.

Unfortunately, it still hangs on the garmin screen......
Clutchy Posted - 06 févr. 2009 : 04:28:04
Thanks, neadrenalin. I thought the problem was the hex offset. I found the firmware I wanted, but I am afraid that the nuvi is unrecoverable. I can no longer get it to pre-boot. When I turn it on, it just displays the words "GARMIN" and that is it. I cannot turn it off, I need to wait for the battery to die, or I remove the battery to turn it off.
If you know of any magic tricks that I can do internally I would love to hear about it.
neadrenalin Posted - 05 févr. 2009 : 08:42:51
Clutchy,
>>Any thoughts or suggestions??
You have not specified correct offset for BD0200FF bytes in gcd file, so you got zero-length file. Open winhex, search hex string BD0200FF and write offset to the command line of the bat file. http://e-trex.info/archives/2008091736

Another way is easier - http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=98909&whichpage=18 and search for your HWID and use RGN that already patched for tracks too.
Clutchy Posted - 03 févr. 2009 : 07:05:55
Well I got tired of waiting for the battery to die, so i opened it up and removed the battery. Unfortunately when I turn it on, it just goes straight to the garmin screen and stays there. I cannot get preboot mode, nor can I shut it off unless I remove the battery. Leaving the battery out and just plugging it into the computer, yields the same results. I guess I shouldn't have left it rebooting for an hour. I think my 200 is permanently broken......

In either way there is no any messages at he bottom of the screen during power on procedure (copyrights, loading maps, etc).
There is obviously something else wrong with this Nuvi.

Edit: Finally done! Flashed original v4.10, then manually "updated" to v3.40 (device still shows v4.10 ?), then updated online to v5.00 - all is working OK now.

Thanks to nadrenalin and PouchX for their work on this matter.

This is almost the exact same situation I have, but I have been unable to resolve the issue.
I had V5.0 on there and while trying to flash something on there I shouldn't have, I managed to mess something up. I have hardware id 834, and I get a constant reboot. Garmin screen shows for 1-2 seconds then unit reboots, again, and again...etc.

Due to the reboot, I cannot get to mass storage mode. GUPDATE.GCD is not present on the device, as I removed it prior to this problem.

I can enter pre-boot mode, and have been able to flash ver 4.10 and ver 4.10cure on there, but it still reboots. If I try to run webupdater when in preboot, it identifies the device and says it has version 4.1 on it, but fails saying that the download is corrupt. I left it for awhile rebooting with the usb plugged in and now it is just frozen with garmin displayed on the screen. No more reboots but I can't power it off or enter preboot anymore. I am going to wait till the battery dies in hopes that I can enter preboot again.

Does anyone have the .rgn file for version 5.0 firmware? I am fairly certain that will fix it as it seemes that I was flashing the firmware when this problem happened. All the files on the device are proper and were functional.

Using neadrenalins tools "unp2" and "merge105" on the GUPDATE.GCD file did not produce a satisfactory result. The fw_all.bin file that it created is 0kb and the boot.bin file is 304kb.

Any thoughts or suggestions??

Thanks.

neadrenalin, any clue to create rgn and cure by myself? Any link to do that?
neadrenalin Posted - 28 janv. 2009 : 22:18:30
I have no 0929 version, If you can contact with PouchX or create rgn and cure yourself. Be back in a week, I hope. Sorry.

Neadrenalin, I have Nuvi 205w with firmware 2.20 and hardware ID:929 (from G7towin) and while loading map, it get restart again and again. I already read all your posting to recover it, and tried lots of firmware including fw_nuvi2x5W_ID0827_en_v460.rar (which I think the closest firmware and hardwareID), and return the same message that you have no upgrade are available for your products. Any chance to recover my nuvi 205w? Oh yes, this is Indonesian version.

Thanks, Guys. The light finally came on!
NanaimoRick Posted - 20 janv. 2009 : 20:08:24
@dozerdude

You would definitely need to have the City Navigator North America NT maps selected using Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info as SergZak states. That Mapset is were the POIs are located.
SergZak Posted - 20 janv. 2009 : 14:50:45
@ dozerdude

After loading what kind of "map file"? A new mapset like US Topo? You can only search for POIs on maps that have POIs embedded in them like City Navigator North America NT 2009. If you're trying to search for POIs on a mapset that does not contain any POIs (like US Topo), that is the message you'll get. Make sure your City Nav mapset is selected (has a check mark in the box next to it): Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info

In addition, the unit can still be routing you even if the City Nav mapset is deselected within the Map Info settings. It will use the crude basemap to route but the routing will not be of much value because of this.
dozerdude Posted - 20 janv. 2009 : 14:42:45
@ Nanaimo Rick

Rick
This happened after loading a map file. I can route to anywhere, but when I try to see a POI, it only offers me a "spell" option and nothing comes up.

When you say 'default POIs' are you talking about the 6 million or so that are built into the Nuvi?

I would think the losing those POIs would be very difficult to do as to the best of my knowledge they are part of the map data. One would assume that if the POIs were gone so would the detailed maps. Is this the case with your Nuvi? Or are you saying that when you search for a particular POI (Where To - Point of Interest - etc.) the Nuvi doesn't fine anything but you can continue to have the device route you to a selected address and display the streets on the map screen?
dozerdude Posted - 20 janv. 2009 : 02:50:42
I have lost all the default POIs from my nuvi250. My custom POIs are still there, as are favorites.
Can the default POIs be replaced? I have meager computer skills, but am willing to try any well explained fixes.
Thanks

Allthough webupdater is not working for me atm because it says that my installation file is corrupted or damaged (i dont remember the exact message that its show)

Thx a lot neadrenalin

It works perfectly, thx very much.

I have try to activate track log feature without fortune. Seems that i have back to 3.40 version, correct? never mind atm, i will check differents between 3.40 and 4.60
neadrenalin Posted - 15 janv. 2009 : 12:08:42
In readme.txt mentioned that nuvi 2xx series DO NOT SHOW pre-boot. After slide-and-hold power unit will be in pre-boot after 2-4 seconds. Holding more 30 seconds leads to calibrating screen message and interrupts pre-boot.

Is 4.60 ok - Yes, you may install it. Where can you get? On garmin.com get with webupdater some gupdater.gcd for another alive nuvi and use unp2 and merge tools from my site e-trex.info

Please read README.TXT included in .rar. These steps are enought. No more damage will happen, until you use hammer.
mikillo Posted - 15 janv. 2009 : 11:36:59
mmmmm one doubt

I have run G7ToWin and it says
nuvi 2 series software version 4.60 ID: 851
Unit ID: .......

So my nuvi HWID is 0851, isnt it?? Or HWID and "ID: 851" are 2 things differents?????

thx

mikillo,
you have new revision of nuvi 200, so you have native tracklog in menu. See the manual how to enable it,
Suffix _en_ means european version. All firmwares for nuvi are multilanguage enabled and texts are stored in .gtt files in garmin\text directory.
I have no patched version for 2x5 series now.

Please use for recovery ID0851 file. It will suit you too (because of new revision of nuvi 200/250). You have to remember one main rule: only HWID is matter.

thx but i still in doubt about how to do it...

I have tried enter in pre-boot mode, but seems nuvi200 doesnt show pre-boot text. I think nuvi200 will be in preboot mode in 60segs?? but how can i know it??? (i mean preboot mode when i hold power on but at the end it shows again the message "System Software Missing" and i release the power on slide, then show it too).

Is "fw_nuvi2x5_ID0851_en_v460.rar" ok for nuvi200?? Or where can i get the latest revision of nuvi200 fw?

Also, i will need all steps to recovery it. Im not sure if i know how to do it, im scared about to broke it more

Thx a lot for u help

Hi,

I have nuvi 200 and after update from garmin site, i get "system software missing" when it power on or connecto to PC

I have run G7ToWin and it says
nuvi 2 series software version 4.60 ID: 851
Unit ID: .......

if im not wrong, i must look for fw_nuvi200_ID0851_ES_V460 if its possible

But i have found only this fw_nuvi2x5_ID0851_en_v460.rar
but seems its for nuvi205, or does it work for nuvi 200 too??? and how can i get spanish version or whatever??

addon: Excuse my english if you dont understand me.
neadrenalin Posted - 14 janv. 2009 : 19:29:23
XisiX,
you need to find .gpx and .gpi strings and replace them to smth new. This will disable loading your bad gpx and gpi files. Take original 0834xxxxxen.rgn and patch it to create your cure.
XisiX Posted - 14 janv. 2009 : 13:19:38
So far, I've found only one .RGN repair file for HWID 834 (it's 083401000410cure.rgn) - after flash my Nuvi keeps restarting and native USB doesn't work.
Using 083401000410en.rgn (regular 4.10 FW) from the same package gives some better result - Nuvi stuck in calibration loop, USB still not working.
I took 083401000410en.rgn and change appearances of GUPDATE.GCD in the code (to UGPDATE.GCD as I had GUPDATE.GCD v5.00 left in the unit), have flashed it and got calibration loop again with USB cable disconnected; step to the forward is the fact that native USB connection to the PC is working now.
After that, online update went w/o problems but after disconnection from the PC all is back to the beginning: Nuvi keeps restarting after Garmin logo shows up on the screen.

For the information, I've tried to flash it even with 083401000500.rgn made by PoucX ('normal' FW with tracklog enabled) but it doesn't work at all -- keeps restarting.

Is there any other repair FW for Nuvi 200 HWID 0834?

Addon: unit is brand new, bought few days ago and screwed up by loading POIs from Garmin site.

and 3.10cure but it nothing seems to work

m0fo1980,
which files you tried to use - please provide the file names. You must use HWID 0660 and 'cure' RGN first.

Please, separate your sentencies with dots (.) and commas (,) because english is not my native language, and it's hard to understand you.

No. Don't try to do anything to change firmware in a such way. Memory map (it means hardware) is different and you will get broken device.

Already setup qwerty but there are a lot of other convenient features with the new OS.

The hardware ID on the two Nuvi 260w's are different. Can the new OS somehow be put on there or does the chip inside of the GPS need to be replaced to get it to update?
neadrenalin Posted - 20 déc. 2008 : 15:25:14
Mikeraffone, no.
Please, get your HWID as described above. I think garmin changed it, and on older units you can not install newer firmware. They are different.

qwerty you can create yourself - just open and edit used .gtt file in any text editor. I've changed my russian.gtt so I have my native layout.

Mikeraffone Posted - 20 déc. 2008 : 14:48:47
I bought a Nuvi 260w in Aug08 and just bough another the exact same model for other car.

The OS on the new one has a lot of new features and even a qwerty keyboard that the old one doesn't have.

I would like to transfer the OS on the new one to the older one. I backed up the Garmin directory to the PC already. Can I simply copy all the files from the new one to the older one without any danger to the older device?

Thanks,
Mike

On some Nuvi units you start the unit press Agree then press the battery indicator until the unit go into pre-load mode. Then only do you attach the USB cable.

@ vincent

If 300319 will decide to send his unit to me... you will see in few days (depend of post speed) in his post how happy he is that his unit is working fine again.
And I will do it for free.
It will take me 15min to repair this unit.

You can also use Google translator and read this:

@Vincent....

Hi!

Thanks for your answer!

1) My problem with the unit is, I start it, and I have always "Loader-loading" and my Computer doesn`t recognized it as a drive.... (Nuvi is simply a black box)

2) Garmin Austria will repair it for 135 Euro....)For this price I can get a new one)

Of course I pay for the repair, but not for this price!
vincentmckenzie Posted - 10 déc. 2008 : 12:23:20
While I have no reason to distrust anyone here I don't understand why, if you're prepared to send your satnav to someone you just met on the internet, you wouldn't send the unit to Garmin themselves instead?

Every Garmin satnav that I have ever seen in person with this kind of problem has always been fixed in one of two ways:

1) Contacting Garmin - they email you a fix (usually an updater program and firmware). Unit is fully functional again within a couple of hours of first contacting Garmin.

2) Returning the unit to Garmin if (1) fails. Unit is usually returned within a few days fully functional by recorded post. This also includes, in two cases, out of warranty units where I've argued on the phone that it was their program that broke the unit (even though we all know fine well that it's usually the user resetting the satnav before the firmware has loaded). They've always agreed to fix it for free.
