I need TOPO that is downloadable to my Garmin Rhino 120, but I can't seem to find a source and I am fast running out of time before deployment.

Any help will be appreciated.

Yeah, that's a bit pricey alright. The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards just building a map along the MSRs with waypoints and track logs. I'll just have to do without the TOPO I guess.

Thanks.
I'll add this to the world map database. I wonder how the accuracy of these maps compares to Maptech's?

This is a bit pricey, but you can get a street map of Iraq for your garmin system. I am not willing to fork over what they are asking, but it may be worth it to go in together with your friends and hand out to those going on convoys.

Right, I've had two of these for 2+ years, but with the one you link you'll need a USB synch cable to use it with a device other than a 3.5mm jack equipped PocketPC ;-) Also, messing around with cables is never a pleasant experience so I'm not positive it's a good idea to take that along in dangerous areas...

Semsons sells this really nice battery extender (I got one) that works with any PPC and Palm.

It clips to your belt and uses AA batteries. Really convenient,as long as you have a pile of AA batteries, especially rechargable ones, that you can charge at night.

The problem is that the iQue has a meager battery life of about one hour (BL on of course but that's the only way to use it outdoors) so I wouldn't want to have to rely on it for anything serious...Any reason this is not being made available for PocketPCs?

Anyway, even without uploaded maps, the Vista remains a sturdy device with a long (20+ hours) battery life where you can upload routes and waypoints using the free maps (they'll need calibration) as a basis but that requires some advance planning and will require to have a laptop handy in the evening.

I just completed a special version of Outdoor Navigator that comes with many maps of Iraq for a large order. It comes with all of the maps and software on one 256 MB SD card. It is only being sold for Palm OS-based products for now. The Garmin iQue is a good example of a device with integrated GPS that it works well with...

More information on this is available at: http://www.maptech.com/products/onsdiraq/index.cfm

No we haven't. But I highly recommend downloading all of the maps that are in the World Map Database (see the Maps and POIs message board) (above link included) and bringing a couple of GPS devices, PPCs, and a laptop etc... with OziExplorer software (it's the only one who can calibrate these maps with non-standard projections), and calibrating these maps on the spot in known locations.

I have been hearing on the radio lately that a lot of troops in Iraq are not being given GPS devices even though they need them and end up in really dangerous situations because of it. So you don't want to rely on the gov't for help in this case. I would spend the money in this case for extra stuff since your life may depend on it.

I also read an article that a lot of soldiers bring their own Garmin Rino walkie talkies and use them for GPS + communication. These may be useful as well.

Welcome to the forums!
These look like the Russian maps we have linked in the Worldmap database. You'll need to get her a PocketPC to import scanned maps though, as the Vista uses proprietary maps only.

Have you had any luck since your last post? My wife is deploying soon and I can't find any good downloads for her Vista. Here is an interesting link, though.

No, I don't. I just checked my manual and found that there is no reference to that in there so I'm wondering how well this Rhino will work with whatever paper maps I get. Perhaps I should call Garmin.....again.

Saleen, do you know of any software that displays your coordinates in Military Grid Reference (MGRS)?
igurevich38 Posted - 02 juil. 2004 : 22:30:17
I suggest that you buy a Pocket PC with a CF GPS or a combo like Mio 168 with Memory Map or OziExplorer so you can use raster maps, just for backup. And buy the cartographic maps. Is the government paying for any of this? :-) In a war zone it's probalby worth the money.

If you decide to build your own map for Garmin here are some places to start. You can download the data in Arc format for free and this will give you the basic outline of the whole country. Since it's vector data, it will be easy to convert to Garmin.

That's what I thought. The unit itself already has the country of Iraq in the database, but beyond Baghdad there appears to be no other city.

I may have to build it from scratch when I get there using known coordinates and named waypoints. I guess that's an option.

No, again for the Garmin you're only option is their WorldMap data.
