Posted - 06 nov. 2007 : 21:36:39 nuvi has service mode (called PRE BOOT MODE) in which unit stays operable for some functions, such as firmware recovery.
To access this mode hold POWER and do not release it.
g7towin can access unit this mode and read/write some data (almanach, time, versions...)
Mapsource CAN NOT write maps in this mode, cause of nuvi limited capabilities. The main way to access maps - use USB Mass Storage Device Mode.
You can not revert firmware to older version using gupdate.gcd method.

Posted - 05 juin 2012 : 16:15:42 Ok I have no idea what to do here, I have a 250W, I can get it to turn on when I hold the power on and touching the bottom right corner of the display, it comes up and says SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING
g7towin says
nuvi 2xxW Software Version 4.00 ID: 737 Unit ID: 0; USB Comm via Bulk Pipe
I have tried 3 computers to get it to see this, winxpSP2 desktop, win7 x64 desktop, winxpsp2 laptop, all 3 computers see it as a garmin GPS and webupdater sees it also on all 3 computers, but none of the 3 see it as a mass storage device, so when I try to get webupdater to load the 073701000260.rgn I got from here it basicaly tells me that the gps isn't connected. Says the garmin device is not responding then it tells you 3 things to check.
Anyone have any idea what to do or should I just crapcan it?
continued : Well I managed to find a copy of updater.exe and fired it up with the file I talked about above, it went into loader mode and loaded the file, the gps then started flashing the GARMIN screen and never stopped doing it, I turned it off and tried again. It then would flash the garmin screen then the calibrate screen then off then one to garmin screen then calibrate screen about 10 times so I turned it off, got it back on and back to the same thing SYSTEM SOFTWARE IS MISSING. |

Posted - 21 août 2011 : 04:21:17 Thanks neadrenalin, but I can't get the unit into preboot mode, there's no way I can get the gps to al least get recognize by pc, turn on, or anything. I hold the hold/power button to the left for a while, but the computer doesn't make any kind of beep. I opened the updater.exe and it said that there was nothing connected to the port. It's like it's totally dead... Also, I don't have the box, I bought it used from an acquaintance, and he didn't give me box. Is there anything I can still do? I'd appreciate all your help guys.

Posted - 17 août 2011 : 10:06:38 kikiwowo, Try to enter pre-boot mode and attach unit to the PC. Then enter Device manager and find Garmin Device in list. It should appear as normal device and work properly. It means you have a chance. Then find your package box and bottom should include partnumber like this: 010-00999-11. Please write it here. DO NOT flash anything before it! |

Posted - 16 août 2011 : 16:55:32 I see...Here an idea: download the correct FW for your nuvi (don't know which is the correct one 0835, 0737 or 0827. I suppose guessing is needed as you didn't make back up.), find and download turboccc's RGN Tool and correct the HwID of the chosen FW to 851. Make it in format GCD and copy it on an SD card in a folder x:/Garmin. Should be named GUPDATE.GCD. If you are lucky maybe the FW will be installed and the unit be revived. That is all I can think of. Other is to contact Garmin customer Support. |

Posted - 16 août 2011 : 16:28:51 Yes it did, the process on the computer seemed fine, it said OK and closed. But once it start flashing on the GPS screen instead of putting the black screen saying Loading... it just turned white and start blinking. When the process finished the screen still remained on blinking, so I decided to unplug it from the USB cord, once I did that the gps turn off and couldn't make it recognize by the PC anymore. |

Posted - 16 août 2011 : 15:42:53 If it is not recognized by PC this is not good. Which FW did you try to flash? |

Posted - 16 août 2011 : 15:28:17 Thanks for your help ddabcd277, althouugh it's not working, it's been like that since a couple of days ago. Also, I never made a backup of the unit (only used it once, and I have it since a week a go). What I'm afraiding is that I used a different HWID so my unit is completely broken and without repair. Is it possible? There is no way I can make it recognize by my computer, and it doesn't even turn on looping or anything at all. |

Leave it for a while and try again the combination to enter in boot mode (being recognized by updater.exe). If you succeed run g7towin and find out what is the HwID of the unit. If you have made a back up you can find it also in GarminDevice.xml file. |

Posted - 16 août 2011 : 15:10:02 Hello everyone, I had read this forum for like 1 week, I finally decided to flash my almost new nuvi 250w, because it just turn on connected to a PC and didn't pass from the loading bar with the PC. So I decided to flash it, I recognize I couldn't find my ID because the g7towin kept saying "Port timeout", so I decided to use it with the Updater.exe, the flash according to the computer finished OK, although while flashing the screen putted a Garmin name on top of other (seemed blurry) and then put on a white screen. The flash finished (OK supposly) and the screen kept being white, so I unplugged the garmin and it just turn off. After that, couldn't turn it on, not even connecting it to my computer using pre-boot combination.
Any advice? Please tell me it's not damage :( |

Try and charge unit battery with USB power charger as for mobile phone. (Not USB cable from PC - unless charger cable)
I tried to charge it using the car adapter, however, the unit is still dead. I tried to reset it in different ways, many times... I suspect the image from the card has overwritten the unit image and now the whole unit is in an inconsistent state... Unfortunately, I didn't make a backup of unit image before (doh :( ).. Is is possible to use an image from a similar unit and write it to SD, hoping next time it boots it takes the right image from SD? Does anyone has such an image? :) Thanks a lot again :) |

@Ile de man - Nuvi ID-0835 is a Nuvi 260W US where did you buy your Nuvi (Taiwan Japan Malaysia?). Use G7toWin to check hardware ID. To enter service mode you should press bottom right corner then shift on/off at same time. Then insert USB while still holding Right corner and on/off switch. At same time start G7toWin. Do configure G7ToWin to read USB not Com1. Also read page1 of this topic. |
