Hey peeps...

So the worst things about the 2100 according to CNET reviewers were that the fonts were too small, the system lags, and the routes were funny. They concluded that for the price you could get a better system.

Well first of all, those of us that jumped on a BF sale have gotten one at a much improved price. Second of all, with access to routing code in the applicationsettings.xml file, we can tweak the routing, and people like Justin have really helped the functionality of the unit. It was also said that if you turn off the menu animations, the system runs faster, with less lag. In fact, when entering the information to register for POI-Warner on the low-graphic micro-keyboard, there was no lag at all. I think the lag has to do with all the graphics that the system has to pull out of the MN6resourcebinary.res file.

Speaking of the resource binary file...

The Germans over on pocketnavigation.de have figured out how to extract the images from the resource binary file using a utility called MN6ResourceView. I'd like to be able to have GPSpassion host this file for us, since it is pretty useful. You can edit all the image files MN6 uses, so you can i) get rid of all the grey shades, ii) make the option buttons transparent on the map screen, iii) change the animations, iv) edit the fonts shown for speed/distance/time of arrival/elevation, etc.. With all these options to edit, small fonts should be a problem of the past.

I wonder what the reviewers would think of our $100 fully modified GPS units then?

...OH, so the point of this thread is that I'm starting to work on some new skins for the 2100. I'd like to share it with you guys, but I don't have anywhere to host it.

------ EDIT ------

Here are the links to what you will need to make your own:

1) ResourceView - used to extract/build .res files
http://gpspassion.com/upload/MN6ResourceView.0.2.2.zip

2) PNGoutWin - this is used to optimize your PNG files so MN|6 runs faster. You need to optimize before you put them back into a .res file. The trial version of this software only does a 20-file batch job at a time... with over 600 image files, I encourage you to purchase their software, not skip this step.
http://www.ardfry.com/pngoutwin/

If there is enough interest in this, and lots of us start making skins, I think a good idea would be to follow the lead of pocketnavigation.de and have this thread for questions/answers, etc., and we can start another thread for "Final Version of Skins", which just contains a simple post with some pictures and a link to the file.

TO cornell89:

Since the navigon 2100 max have a wider screen, my skin wont really fit. You will need new pics with the proper resolution.

For the car arrow it should work. Just locate the folder were is located your arrows and copy the cars in its. Ensure the name of the files match the original ones.

My cars arrows are in this folder on my Navigon 2120:
MN6/Settings/Data/QVGA_Apollon_Landscape.

In your case I think you should look for the Zerberos folder. Or make a search on your card with *.png

HELP, I just bought a Navigon 2100 Max w/ traffic. It has Version 7.3.2 & CE 1.0202 installed. The problem is that I don't have a mn6resourcesbinary.res file in my MN6 folder. I have a MobileNavigator.res located in my NAVIGON folder. In addition, I don't have PNG files. All my image files seem to be PNX files. Does anyone have the same set-up? I've been trying for days to hack the theme, etc.

Ever so sorry for my bad english!!!

Hi all.
I bought my Navigon 2100 Max about 3 months ago. I really like it. Its my first GPS and im more than happy with it. First it felt bit unresponsive (but hey im never in hurry and besides I have it sorted now so its bit faster). What im not happy with is the font size for the current speed. I use the GPS every day with my work as im door to door salesman. Lot of the time i find myself watching the current speed from my GPS rather than from the actual speedometer. And it really annoys me that i have to focus so hard to see the numbers. I would like to make the Mph sign as big as possible. I would be happy if could also remove the altitude meter as I do not use it (just to make even more room for the current speed).

When i first bought the GPS i discovered this forum here and thought i will completely customize my GPS, but i find myself quite happy with as it is (plus dont have lately almost no spare time whatsoever - my life sucks i know). I do not need complete makeover. Just need to sort out the Speed font size. I tryed to search these forums and couldnt find hex line guide for 2100 MAX. I did notice guide for 2100 and 7100 fonts but not for 2100 MAX. I spent more than 2 hours to do so, this is my lasty attempt before i give up.

Can anyone please help me. Would be very thankful. Just in case i will post my res file as well. Maybe it will help. http://rapidshare.de/files/45507121/MobileNavigator.res.html

Cheers

Hi,
I would like to make some tweaks to my Navigon 2100 Max. I cannot locate the MN6 folder on my SD card, there isn't one!
Also, I notice a RES file called MobileNavigator. Is this the one that needs editing? There seems to be one of these on the Navigon unit itself and another version on the SD card.
Thanks,
Mark.

Hello everybody! I was just wondering if mstpub's skin & red car icon in replacement of the arrow on page 99 would work on navigon 2100 max? Can please somebody tell me how to do it. Thanks.

It would be cool to use a gif instead of a png for the car. Does anyone know if the reference to car_3d.png is part of the compiled executable or (hopefully) in an ini or res file somewhere?

make sure the skin you are using is for the unit you have - 5200, 2100, etc as they all are a little different in the file structure

also make sure that the skin has been tweeked for the version of firmware you are using - update 1,2, or whatever they are on now

hope that helps

Hey i did a search through the forums and didnt get any results. Could someone maybe make me a Scion xB theme....im not too good with photoshop... I like mild transparency and would like some larger font for the speed limit, and as far as the scion part of it if someone could make a 2d and 3d black xB car icon, and a neat Scion Splash screen i would greatly appreciate it!!

I've been reading thru this stuff and it's making my head spin!! I am trying to change the orange arrow icon that shows up while your on a map (Navigon 2100). I want it to be the Honda symbol or a car. I tried naming the files Car_3d.png and placing them in the landscape folder and that's not working. Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Fantastic work. Thanks for the skins! I was wondering if anyone can direct me to any PDA skins exchange for MN6. I have looked but haven't been successful in finding one. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

The 1.1 skins work but require a little tweaking. There is no short cut other than read through the 3 forums and make the changes.
Here are the links to the last pages of two other Navigon forums where you will find some skins. These are the sources that are used for all information on reskining the Navigon.

Are there any V1.2 tested skins available? I'm not looking for anything fancy. Thanks all!
