Semsons has a new data logger available on their site, the Royaltek RBT-2300. As I am in the market for such a device, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this device? I'm specifically intersted in a comparison of this with the BT-335, and MTK units..

Here is a link: http://www.semsons.com/rorbgpsdalos.html

Here are my thoughts / questions (from an email sent to sempsons..):

Looks interesting, but what is up with the 580mAh battery?! ..what is the advantage to a low power chipset with such a low capacity battery.

In the manual it says this is the same battery that is used in the nokia 6100.. According to the nokia website the 6100 uses the BL-4C battery, but Nokia rates their battery at 750mAh. If it uses the BL-4C battery I would consider this unit, as an extra battery with desktop charger can be bought on ebay for $3 + $5 S&H, and with the use of a separate charger I could easily keep a supply of these things charged.

How does the RBT-2300 compare to others in its ability to change log and receiver settings (frequency, altitude, etc)? Can this be done over Bluetooth (with or without a hack)? Will it loose settings / logged data when battery is changed? Can the log be downloaded over Bluetooth?

A nice chart comparing these features, as well as general gps function would be great (..served with a beer would be better!)

The help is much appreciated!

one thing more to my previous post
I live in Frence and the Sbas system should be EEGNOS (PRN 120-124-126)
is it OK?
moranche Posted - 10 mai 2012 : 11:08:04
a long time after the begining of this post, I just baught a rbt2300 GPS and want to use the SBAS mode for a better accuracy
I turned it on by demo SW but I did'nt notice any accuracy increase (+/-5m in a stationnary state)
Using Sirf Demo SW,no correction added when DGPS mode activated on a SBAS channel

somebody has an idea

To avoid loss of settings when changing batteries, can one
power the unit via the USB port while changing the batteries?

Hi jisse

I'm afraid your gps device is dead ...
Try to remove the batery and re-insert it. But not sure this will fix the problem !

Hi all,

I have a big problem...
I have received my RBT-2300 one week ago. The 2 first days, it worked very well. Now I can't fixe any gps position, I don't see any green led, only the bluetooth blue led is bliking. Connection with data downloader is impossible, connection with my mobile phone works but any gps position is sent.

Please could you help me??
Thanks

Jisse

Hi,

I g=have a very simple suggestion --> don't remove the battery !

It's not a joke : you just have to put 4 AA NimH cells in serie and power your royaltek via the standard jack plug to recharge your GPS batt and avoid to remove it.

Trust me it works very safely (and it is cheap)

HI all,
I have run into a new problem with the RBT 2300. It works great, but everytime I replace the battery I have to reset it to use SBAS. I can do this at home easily enough, but I cant get the RoyalTek BT GPS mini software that runs on the PDA to connect to the RBT 2300 when I am away from home. I use it all day and have to change the battery part way through the day. After I change the battery, no more SBAS. I have an HP211 with WM6. The RoyalTek software seems to run OK but just won't connect to the GPS. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Pat

Hi all,

I have already ordered one of this devices to test their capabilities. I'm looking forward to implement some kind of route control with some vehicles in my company. So i'm wondering if this devices have the capability to discriminate between them, i mean what happens if three or four devices are in range and i try to download the data, is possible to discriminate from which device i am actually getting the data? Is this possible through the com port configuration assigning one specific port to each device?

I'll be very grateful for any comment or help you can give me since some of you have already done some extensive tests to this devices.

Greetings,

Hi Christophe,

I'm actually not sure how to check my firmware version. But I think it's not the new version because I've had mine for close to a year now, and mine saves separate data files when I turn off the device, unlike the new firmware. Anyway, you can try downloading Royaltek's current data download program. If you switch to the "Device Status" tab, it probably only shows three possible selections as in previous versions. But after connecting via Bluetooth, two more options show up, with the last one being:

UTC Time, Longitude, Latitude, Velocity, Distance, Fixed Mode Satellites, Fix, DOP and Course

Hi Everyone,

Don't know if other people have posted about this already, but Royaltek's website has a version of the Data Downloader (v 2.6.1.47) which allows the RBT-2300 to record additional NMEA sentences, including info such as PDOP, HDOP. There's also an option to download the log in readable text form. Sample records below.

Hi JessG,

There is no way to improve the accuracy on the foot path directly from the device. You should search some filtering software to do this. As far as I know Christophes's software includes such a feature :

Thanks Alain - I went ahead and ordered the RBT-2300 last week and it got here today, so far I'm happy with it. I took a drive into town and I've been messing around in (the included) Locr and Google Earth. I set it to record velocity+alt at 1hz and I'm very impressed with the accuracy driving, I mean its like perfectly lined up with the route I took. However the on foot path was pretty jumpy - I don't know if there is a way to improve this with speed filters in GPSBabel or other software, or if there is some setting I can change on the device?

I'm not to concerned with the battery right now as It did include a car charger, so I plan to have it plugged into that the whole trip, I don't think I will be away from the car for 5-10 hours at a time.

Hi JessG

I answer to your two questions:

1- no, there is no waypoint button on the RBT 2300. It systematically records data once switched ON.
==> you switch it on, drop it in a bag and forget it for the whole day !

2- For 5 to 6 days 12h/day trip there will be no problem at all in terms of memory even in velocity+altitude mode at 1 Hz. You will not full the memory before 12 days or so.

Just an advice buy an extra battery or better buy your device at CRICEL, they provide a huge 17h bat coming with a nice adapted cover.
Other option to increase batt life is to carry 4 AA NiMh 2500 mAh bats in a small box and to solder a jack. This battery will be plugged inside the female jack plug of the RBT and will load the device while running ...

bye
Alain
