UPDATED 20080108 :
In answer to a question about Navigon in Europe I wrote this comment on page 52 : Navigon have been shipping navigation software in Germany for nearly 10 years, at the time it was on laptops, so they have accumulated a huge experience. They expanded to Europe in early 2004 and after some fine tuning of the routes, they are generally considered throughout Europe as the better software when it comes to the quality of routes. So they know what they're doing, how long it will take them to optimize the US routing engine is anyone's guess though, but they'll get there I'm sure ;-)

They had a bit of a hiccup in their strategy from 2004 to 2007 though as they went the safe OEM route when TomTom went for in-house devices, much more costly upfrotn. They worked with big names like Sony, Blaupunkt, Becker, but most failed to in the market so Navigon were left with little brand recognition and we all know what happened with the TomTom brand worldwide. They changed their strategy in early 2007, we'll see if they can catch up...so far they haven't been very successful it seems even in France.

UPDATED 20070718 : Have been doing some driving while I am vacationing in the SF Bay Area, and here are some comments and pictures :
1. Route calculations are not optimized compared to TomTom v7 on the 720 : it had me use a main road with a lot of lights instead of a freeway. While that choice could have been acceptable to start with, it then insisted on rerouting me to that original route for way too long. Then it proceeded to have me zigzag around a quite neighboorhood instead of making a couple of turns like the 720. See details below
2. View of the map is too "high" and cluttered with POIs, see below
3. A nice plus is the display of the maximum speed on some roads
4. RV is "nice" as in "wow" factor, but I'm not sure it really adds a lot compared to the "extended lanes"
5. There is no "carpool" lane option

Side by side test with the TomTom 720

Original routes are quite different, more freeway for the 720

7100 insists on a big detour to go back to the original route
And then thinks I'm game to test the cornering abilities of my PT Cruiser ;-)

Map view is a bit "high" and cluttered with POIs

Activating "Reality View"

Some RV examples - clearly a "wow" factor

I'm expecting a Nuvi 680 test unit later this week so will be able to run some comparisons as well.

ADDED BY GPSPASSION : The big news on the 7100 of course is the addition of "Reality View" (RV), that Navigon worked on with Zenrin, they are the Navteq/TeleAtlas) equivalents in Japan where "Reality View" has been available for several years. It goes one step further from the "extended lanes" provided by Navteq. While RV is very impressive, it is a "static" view so you lose your sense of progress when getting close to an intersection (there is only a little dot progression on the bottom left).

Zenrin's "Reality View"

Navteq's "Extended Lanes"

I tested it extensively in Europe and found it to work well, although the 3D view is a bit "high" and "distant", but is should be tweakable in the .ini files. One question was about the street names, they can be activated. People who are comparing it to Garmin or TomTom AIOs should be aware that the Navigon UI is slower (menu browsing, address searching).

I'm currently using it in California and have found some odd routes, will need a bit more time and will report back.

ORIGINAL POST BY "NO TRIX" : Navigon, a world leader in GPS software, has made a major announcement about their rumored entry into the US AIO Market. The Press Release can be found at: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/07-12-2007/0004624276&EDATE=

The NAVIGON 7100 offers a host of best-in-class features to help users along the way, including:

-- Clear voice guidance with spoken street names
-- Stress-busting features like Lane Assistant and Reality View that actively guide users and provide photo-realistic images of complex intersections
-- Subscription-free real-time traffic information that works out of the box
-- Information on more than 6.5 million points of interest, plus Zagat-rated restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, and more on the route-allowing user to enjoy the cross-country drive to the fullest
-- Bluetooth(R) wireless technology for easy, hands-free calling
-- Voice Command for spoken directions
-- A "Scenic Route" function which guides you through some of the more visual routes (e.g., mountains) if you choose.

This device is slated to arrive, per the news release, this month (July). The device appears to have all the bells and whistles, including some we haven't seen on a GPS device before. It remains to be seen how it will perform in real world situations...

I for one cannot wait to find out!

Also another thing has anyone figured out how to sync your contacts up with the navigon? I know they say you can in the manual but does not seem possible.. They are using Bluesoleil for connections.
Subaru Posted - 15 janv. 2009 : 02:30:59
Ah figured it out the sate of Hawaii is on it's own SD card and the rest of the sates on another.

However kinda disapointed sounds like the system is not fast enough that sometimes the voice will stutter a bit. and I already had one fatal error crash already.
Subaru Posted - 14 janv. 2009 : 20:56:11
Ok the 7100 came and like the picture has two SD cards which confuse me..

One says Navigon 7100 North America (excludes Mexico) and the other card just says North America (sans Mexico).. both the cards are the same?
Subaru Posted - 12 janv. 2009 : 18:21:41
hmm I wonder what the other card is then.. I guess I will find out when I arrive.
wallstreet123456 Posted - 12 janv. 2009 : 16:37:13
My unit came with one SD card and you download the map updates from Navigons site and they store on the SD card in the GPS unit.
Subaru Posted - 12 janv. 2009 : 16:31:07
I have a question I just won this item on ebay just curious in the seller's picture I see what seems to be two SD cards but I downloaded the manual and looked at all the reviews and it only seems to have 1 SD card?

the map updates comes on a SD card? I'm a little confused about this
aljacket Posted - 04 nov. 2008 : 00:41:45
Try eBay in the US, I know the German maps worked for a friend of mine on a 7100. Do note belive they are the latest maps. Most are really the Q4_2007 maps.

Received my Navigon 7100 last Christmas. Finally got to really test it. I just completed a long trip from NE Ohio to Miami then on to Tampa to Daytona and back home to Ohio.

While driving noticed 7100 was giving me weird routing, touched Options, noticed I had it set in Optimum mode, changed it on the fly to Shortest route and crazy routing stopped immediately and went the way I expected it to go.

So I conclude that goofy routing is because of the settings made by the user. While driving home, we had to use the WV turnpike, it tried to route us off I-77 which was incorrect, tapped Options again and realized I had set it to "avoid turnpikes". Changed that setting, and routing was then perfect.

After reading so many complaints about routing, check your options and change them to shortest or fastest. It worked for me. {by the way, also had maps from AAA Club as backup so I new what route was best} It also routed us around a construction mess in Tampa after we were told to go a different way. Navigon took us the easiest and least used route. Love my Navigon.

Only one thing left to work on, the speed profiles. Notice the time was off and the speed never matched the car. It was reading about 3-5 mph slower. I haven't changed my speed profiles yet, but that's next. Didn't use the 1.2 update either. Still using 1.1. Put 1.2 on a new SD card and unit acted funny right before leaving, so I left it home. Just downloaded another copy of 1.2 in case first one had bad data. Notice only one speed profile needed on 1.2 according to other posts. Is that correct?

Immediately after the Navigon starts to boot, press the bottom button and hold. The unit will boot into the WinCE operating system. There will be a thin gray line at the bottom of the screen. Use a stylus to tap the thin line and the WinCE Start bar will appear. Can be use to operate other WinCE programs from an SD card.
GregP Posted - 05 sept. 2008 : 02:28:53
Disregard. I'm guessing it worked after I got moving. Even though I had 9 sat's with signal.

One question though, what is the bottom button on the power button?
GregP Posted - 04 sept. 2008 : 05:40:28
No, it was right when I posted so like about 9pm or 9:30?
hlamster Posted - 04 sept. 2008 : 05:29:41
I believe that is the ETA - estimated time of arrival. Did you
do this around 11am?
GregP Posted - 04 sept. 2008 : 02:50:18
Trying to figure out what something is. When you plot a route and the preview comes up, what is the information in the "Total" box on the right? I get "xxx mi" "00:00 with a timer icon? and a 00:00 with a flag. The last one looks like maybe total time till destination but it has a "p" like maybe it's an am-pm thing. This trip takes 5 1/2 hours on Google Maps and the values I have are: 344 - 06:42 - 05:41p.

The manual doesn't really help much.
navkchak Posted - 23 juin 2008 : 22:54:48
Did anyone compare the 7100 POI with 2100 Max POI? 7100 POI (after 1.2 update) seems to contain bigger POI files, but missing some POIs compared to 2100 Max. Any idea why that is so?

On that type of thing check maps.google.com to see if there is a generally a problem with the address on navteq maps. 95% or more of the time with whacked out address placement it isn't the navigon's fault.

On the routing generally, well it is plain and simple second class compared to every other major maker, including with the software update and with or without tweaks

thats a question i have been meaning to ask too. this board was the reason why I purchased my 7100, and i never ran it before the 1.2 update was available.

i too am curious if routing tricks will work to make it route better.

example -- i live in corsicana, texas 75110 -- and if i want to go to Lancaster, TX 75134 -- well the 7100 wants me to go up I-45 all the way to I-20 then back down I-35

when i perfectly know going I-45 to hwy287 then up I-35 is about 10-15mins faster

i dunno about this routing thing -- i too am happy with the unit, (Truck Driver) and it has saved time.

but then again, i only used it for 1 week, and yes -- Natalie The Navigon, has brought me to a corn field once -- actuall delivery was only 1/4 mile away and i still cant forgive her for that, but I got there :)

i am tempted to try these xml tweaks ,,, but scared to do so because running 1.2 software

I agree that the routing is not that great. Here's what I'd recommend trying.
1) Connect your device to your PC and search for a file named 'ApplicationSettings.xml' located on your 7100.
2) Copy the file to your computer.
3) Right click on the file 'ApplicationSettings.xml' and select edit (it should open in NotePad)
4) Look for the following line (without the quotes): "<Name>Car Fast</Name>"
5) Below this, you should see something that looks like this:

<PreferenceFactor_US>
<City>1.179|1.134|1.0|1.0|0.99|0.77|0.6|0.4</City>
<Open>0.768|0.594|0.471|0.546|0.578|0.322|0.266|0.171</Open>
<Special>1.0|1.0|1.0|1.0</Special>
</PreferenceFactor_US>

This is part of the routing algorithm. Replace that portion with this:

<PreferenceFactor_US>
<City>1.179|1.134|1.0|1.0|0.99|0.77|0.6|0.4</City>
<Open>1.0|0.773|0.613|1.0|0.752|0.322|0.266|0.171</Open>
<Special>1.0|1.0|1.0|1.0</Special>
</PreferenceFactor_US>

6) Save the changes you just made (I hope you made a back-up of the original!)
7) Copy back to your device (make sure you place it back in the same directory).

I've had a lot better routes since I've made these changes. I'm still trying to figure out how to minimize turns (I think it's part of the <Special> </Special> section, but I haven't had time to play with it.

Let me know if it:
a) works
b) If you like the routing better (this ensures that my ego gets properly inflated). Seriously, if you find a better "tweak", post it for other users.

Justin

Hi Justin,
With much help from your post I started playing around with the settings listed above. I was trying to figure out as much as I could about the relationship between the various fields and came across something interesting. There is definite link between the "PreferenceFactor_US" and "SpeedProfile_US" data. I did some analysis of the stock Euro and US data and found if you multiply the corresponding PreferenceFactor and SpeedProfile values they yield the same pattern across all three speed cars - fast, normal and slow. Here's what I'm trying to say :

<SpeedProfile_US>
<Open>A|B|C|D|E|F|G|H</Open>
</SpeedProfile_US>
<PreferenceFactor_US>
<Open>a|b|c|d|e|f|g|h</Open>
</PreferenceFactor_US>

So A*a=Aa, B*b=Bb, etc.
This yields a set of data Aa,Bb,Cc etc which I believe are average speeds in km/h for various road types, ranging from A-Freeway to H-probably a very minor dirt road.....

For the Euro stock data you get :

Fast 174 121 89 64 56 47 30 20
Normal 173 120 99 64 56 47 30 20
Slow 173 120 99 64 56 47 30 20

And for the U.S. data :

Fast 88 62 42 41 40 20 12 6
Normal 88 62 42 41 40 20 12 6
Slow 88 62 42 41 40 20 12 6

There's one discrepancy in the third column of the Euro data, not sure what that's about. Might actually be an error in the stock data I guess. Anyway it seems clear that when we make changes to the PreferenceFactor data we should be careful to also make corresponding changes to the SpeedProfile data.

Here's my next guess about this data - I believe that although the stock U.S. values would indicate that the unit is doing the U.S. computations in miles, I believe that it is incorrectly interpreting the xml values as km. I do have my unit set to use miles and the trip ETAs were way off until I figured this out.

So, using all of the above I made a bunch of trial and error changes and I think I have come to a set of values that work well for my driving style (which is about 10-15mph over the limit on the freeway and 5-10max over the limit on other roads). Since my 7100 does not allow selection of various car types such as the Fast,Normal or Slow that the xml files would suggest, I made the changes to all three sections. Here's what I came up with :

<SpeedProfile_US>
<City>120|125|89|75|70|62|50|40</City>
<Open>120|125|89|75|70|62|50|40</Open>
</SpeedProfile_US>
<PreferenceFactor_US>
<City>1.0|0.773|0.613|0.72|0.752|0.644|0.5|0.45</City>
<Open>1.0|0.773|0.613|0.72|0.752|0.644|0.5|0.45</Open>
<Special>1.0|1.0|1.0|1.0</Special>
</PreferenceFactor_US>

These changes were made in the "Car Fast", "Car Normal", and "Car Slow" sections. Note also that I decided to make the <City> and <Open> sections the same since I feel that in my area at least city driving does not warrant different routing or average speeds - this would undoubtedly not be true for places like New York, San Fran etc. At the end of the day I believe the above values tell my 7100 that my average speeds in kph are :

120 97 55 54 53 40 25 18

The routes and ETAs I have tested so far are pretty dang accurate for arrival times and as-I-would-choose myself routing. Your mileage may vary etc. Be sure to back up your SD card before trying any changes etc etc, disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer :)

Hope this helps rather than confuses. I'd be happy to clarify anything as needed.

Brendan.

That is one of my complaints about the design of the unit. There should be a power light for it but I guess that would drain the battery too, but there should be a better switch.
vasy48 Posted - 28 mai 2008 : 19:37:00
thank you, wallstreet123456. It looks like I was always putting it into sleep mode, which would explain lack of charge several days/hours later.
wallstreet123456 Posted - 28 mai 2008 : 19:27:40
If you want to turn the unit off completely you need to press the top part of the button and hold it for about 15 seconds, to check that is is off let go of the button and press is quickly again, if it does not come on it is turned off.

I've been following this thread for quite some time now and i think it's time for me to drop in my 2 cents.
I own a 7100 and other than the little idiosyncroncies posted on here I have relatively happy with the unit itself. It is my firt gps unit but anyway happy regardless. Now let's move on to the stupid, annoying, flimsy ass mounting unit. From day one, this has been such a wobbly friggin thing that i dreaded going over a bumbp in the road. After six months of owning the 7100; the mounting unit, about 1 week ago, started losing suction of falling off in the middle of my driving. Well today was the big one, it falls off and it snapped off the antenna for the Traffic signal. Needless to say this is just friggin annoying at this point. Now i gotta spend time bitching and moaning to Navigon about an inferior product. I don't know what the outcome of that would be... if they decide not to honor their poor craftsmanship andgive me the heaveho is there anywhere i can purchase the traffice antenna? any help is appreciated

I have tried to search for Best Buy, Shopping Malls and others with no success. I have a HP 310 and the search engine will find what ever I search for sorted by distance from where I am at. I don't understand how to enter a search for POI with the Navigon 7100.
wallstreet123456 Posted - 28 mai 2008 : 14:48:33
Can someone explain to me how to use POI's on the 7100? I select find POI and I was looking for Home Depot, but can't find anything. Is it because they are not on the POI listing or am I doing something wrong? I actually never used POI's on the unit at all so I am a little confused :(

yes, incredibly the advertised claim of 4.5 hours refers to NON use of the device, ie when the screen is turned off, and the unit is placed in standby. real life on my 6 month old 7100 is 45 minutes to an hour.

Here is the reply I received from Navigon regarding the short battery life.

Dear Navigon Customer,
Thank you for your inquiry.

When not plugged into the car charger, the battery will last 1-2 hours if operated constantly. It will last up to 4.5 hours when the standby feature is consistently utilized.

Sincerely,
Navigon Customer Support Team

Haven't posted in a few months, but I still love the 7100. I just moved to Boston from NY and it still works great. Sometimes it doesn't take me the fastest possible way, but it always takes me where I want to go so no complaints here. Installing the 1.2 update now

Battery life is very bad. Even when it's off it seems to drain. I had it fully charged and put it in the car overnight. Turned it on and the indicator shows that the battery is only 2/3 charged.

Instaled update yesterday - took forever to download the update from the website and ~40min to install, but NO glitches. Have not tested the routing yet, but the 2 short trips I took today - it routed correctly.

I found an 8gig SD card for $57 bucks I don't know if I allowed to post the link or not but it's on Amazon web site

Whats all going on with this money draining Navigon.
First they charge us to pay for Radars, ok can come up with that, wasn't to expensive anyway....
But now they gonna charge us over a 100 for map updates ?? + its only a subscription for 2 years ...
http://www.navigon.com/site/nl/nl/maps_services/fresh_maps
Am I not getting this, or you buy this device and NOT get map updates ?
No changes in the last 2 months I have this device seems very very odd to me from radars or roads.

I bought this Navigon as a truck driver for his style and his map looks and clear and good screen + his good vocal guiding.
But they are milking this cow dry.
They just after 2 months totally ruined a good product with there VERY pricey updates and upgrades.
Also no media is included, what is just BS, mailed them and there explanation was our CPU+memory isn't strong enough, (they weren't very friendly either imho by just redirecting me to there newest product WHAT BTW only include MP3 for what I've heard) while I run Media programs on it just fine with no hassle what so ever, and this GPS is turned on for these 2 months I had, so I can easily say it's tested fully with over then 20.000KM underneath it, and many nights watching Divx and such on it in my Truck + Warner on it with thousands of Hotspots loaded in it's memory.

So all in all, all I wanted to ask/say was that if they don't turn there boat with there charging for just everything what should (is) free by there concurrents, they again will dive there boat like before.
I like this device very much, I wish I could keep on using it, but as for use to make my living and not for a Sunday driver using it once a year this device and there charged updates is draining my money.
And to me they probably have to have it from the people that use these devices each day for there day job then for elderly who lend it to each and everyone so a pack of people don't buy one for years to come, while I probarly need one each so much time.
MTurbo Posted - 15 mai 2008 : 19:39:38
I got my Navigon about 2 months ago charged it fully the first time and ran down battery and charged it up again. Did this 3 times and the battery does not last long.

You might be right about 1hr and 30mins. Maybe with the dimming of the screen it can last longer.

I also have a HP Ipaq and the battery last about the same. Have a Magellan 4250 that last about 3:45 to 4hr.

wallstreet123456 Posted - 15 mai 2008 : 18:49:28
I was curious to see what results other users were getting as far as battery life goes. Navigon claims 4.5 hours use per charge but Imy unit seems to display one square in the battery after about 30 minutes of use. I am lucky if I get about one hour or 1.5 hours per charge.

The update for the 7100 is now available
hlamster Posted - 10 mai 2008 : 21:23:43
I have had the 7100 for a couple of months and have mostly found it lacking for driving around the city. The 1.1 upgrade and the tweaks
from the tweak thread helped but it was far from perfect. At least
with 1.1 and the tweaks it stopped telling me to make u-turns on the Brooklyn Bridge! This is our first GPS and maybe we expected too much. My wife kept telling me it was a piece of $%^&*(.

Well all that being said we are now both [B]real fans of the 7100[\B]. We just returned from a trip to the Southwest and it really got us to where we needed to go with as best I could tell little out of the way routing. This included finding the restaurants, hotels and attractions in and around Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Taos, Albuquerque, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce and Salt Lake City. We were both impressed by it. Still some quirks - like the saying seconds for S rather than South in SLC. And it did have our hotel in SLC on the wrong side of the street (a Hilton no less). But all in all we were very happy to have it in cities that we did not know. I also think we
are now used to some of its quirks.

Can't wait the next 4 days till I get the 1.2 upgrade.

Also, does anyone have any easy to install good set of skins for the 7100. After going through the skins section I couldn't find any that seemed appropriate other than some auto icons. Most of the good stuff
seemed to be for the 2100.

NYC Traveler, Thanks for the detailed review on Amazon.

XxhaimBondxX, What made you choose the Nuvi over the 7100, if I may ask?

Im still at a crossroads on the two.

cosco also has it for $250.

i have the 7100. once the 8100 comes out hopefully bestbuy has it in stores and ill just exchange my 7100 and pay the difference
XxhaimBondxX Posted - 03 mai 2008 : 02:49:00
If anyone is looking for a cheap 7100, check out this one on e-bay. Its like new for $250 and free shipping: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280223436845&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=018

I would get it myself, but I doubt the new updates will be any improvements, so sticking with my Nuvi for a while.
NYC Traveler Posted - 29 avr. 2008 : 18:49:51

Regarding the Nuvi 660. That was the gps I replaced with the 7100. I ended up giving it to one of my kids. For insights on how the two compare, check out my review earlier on this thread, or on Amazon. Go to the Navigon 7100 page and it is the first review on the page. I hope it can help you decided.

ds650 Posted - 29 avr. 2008 : 03:10:55
Tivoguy & Masterxchief,
I feel the same way. I currently have a 5100 with the 1.2 sw update. I will say mine is better than it has been now. Its not perfect at all, but better. The 1.2 for me was an improvement. You can read my thoughts on the thread about the updates. I'm just hoping the continue to improve each time as such, afterall they will be charging from now on. I wonder though how "limited" or "non-upgradeable" these Navigon units are since all info is stored on a SD card. With no internal memory & an open SD slot to expand extras......

Anyway I have an unopened 7100. I really wanted the bigger screen so I thought Id sell the 5100.

My thoughts are now this.....
Keep the 5100 & return the unopened 7100. Wait on the 8100?
Sell the 5100 & use the 7100
Sell the 5100, return the 7100 & buy a Nuvi 660 that Ive been eyeing & seems to have rave reviews.

Any thoughts folks?
NYC Traveler, Can you enlighten me on the Nuvi 600 in your sig? What are your thoughts on it?

Thanks guys
gpspassion Posted - 29 avr. 2008 : 02:36:10
Just copy them to your hard drive with the 7100 connected or using a USB card reader for a faster transfer ;-)

is there anyway to backup the maps on the SD card on the 7100, I would like to keep a back up copy just in case the maps on the SD card go bad

thx

Update 1.2 with a new map is to be released May 14th for the 7100.

Has there been any software updates for the 7100?
masterxchief Posted - 23 avr. 2008 : 03:19:25
I was wondering the same thing as tivoboy. I just got the 7100 from costco and I'm wondering is it worth keeping at this price point or should I just return it and put my money towards another gps?
tivoboy Posted - 18 avr. 2008 : 03:51:04
So, there had been lots of complaining about this unit historically, but not that it is about 250$ AR, AND there is a new SW version coming out, what do people think. At this pric point, is it more acceptable?
L0stS0ul Posted - 15 avr. 2008 : 17:02:07
Well I do know, just from looking at the resource files, that they only provide the graphics for the unit it's targeted at. Thats to keep the size of that resource file down so at a minimum that is different between the three.
justflie Posted - 15 avr. 2008 : 06:50:31
hmm, that's odd. I checked for the 7100. I'm surprised that there's a difference. I just assumed that they use the same software. Someone just posted in the v1.2 Software Update thread on this forum that the 5100 update is live right now and he is downloading it (1.73GB) as we speak. Again, I'm surprised that there are different software versions for each piece of hardware.
L0stS0ul Posted - 15 avr. 2008 : 05:22:47
I just checked and for the 2100 it's still saying April 22nd. I hope that's not the case but better they get it right.
justflie Posted - 15 avr. 2008 : 02:52:28
Another method (which I used a couple of times) is to plan the route out on the device and save it for later use. ie I set up the trip the night before I leave, save it, and then load the route in the morning when I hop in the car.

*edit* DOH! The v1.2 Software Update has been pushed back to May 14th (delayed) according to Navigon's website. I had just clicked on the link to see if perhaps it would be released early (since 4/22 was nearly upon us). Luckily, this doesn't really affect me. The wedding I'm driving to (from MA to OH) isn't until May 25th. As long as it's not delayed again that is...
gpspassion Posted - 09 avr. 2008 : 23:04:48
Not out of the box, no. I think someone had figured out a way to edit the route files in the FRA forums, but it's a bit of work.
IHeartTurbo Posted - 09 avr. 2008 : 17:43:24
does the 7100 allow you to plan trips on your pc and then sync them to your gps via usb?
wallstreet123456 Posted - 07 avr. 2008 : 14:30:40
I too am happy with what I am seeing noew from Navigon. They are trying to do the right thing for their customers. I understand we all wanted this unit to be more thouroughly tested before it was sold but they are now doing the right thing.

I am looking forward to 1.2 and the map update. Looks like the 2 gb card will be filled to the max.
NYC Traveler Posted - 05 avr. 2008 : 19:43:53
I have noticed that Navigon FreshMaps is now on sale at Amazon. It offers three years of map updates (12 in all, no doubt quarterly). For about $65 which is what I just bought it for it is a great bargain to get map updates and pois every three months for three years.

On Navigon's website, I see that this first update will be in July for NavigonFresh. However, there is a new software update for the 7100 coming at the end of April, which offers a free map update.

From their website........Note that Software Update 1.2 includes a free complimentary map update at a file size of up to 2GB.

Now that is what I call a company that is heading in the right direction.

I look forward to downloading the new update and using NavigonFresh.

MTurbo Posted - 31 mars 2008 : 19:09:58
I currently have a Magellan 4250 and a Hp Ipaq 310. The hp has issues even after the content manager update, but I can return the 4250 and was thinking of buying the 7100 at Costco online $299. I was wondering your opinion on the Navigon 7100 would you recommend buying it as current owners.

The sale Costco has is till April 24, and if it does not have the new maps that some say might be released in April I can always return it. Hopefully Navigon will give one free map upgrade if you bought a gps that has older maps like that Garmin does.

I read the posts about the 7100 issues, I also borrowed a friend 7100 for a few weeks and updated it to 1.1. So far here in Canada(Ontario) no problems with routhing issues.

I like the reality view when you are exiting to another main highway and I like how it displays near by poi.

Tekker Posted - 29 mars 2008 : 21:15:31
Everyone and I mean everyone should use a code in there GPS to start up, it's not much of trouble, allot less then taking out the bracket.
And after a while it will be allot less intresting to steal those GPS if you'r not handy enough to hack them.

So use the Code ! ALL
justflie Posted - 29 mars 2008 : 15:18:17
ouch, that's rough. I've gotten in the habit of taking the mount off. It is certainly a pain in the butt but I guess it's a good move. Are you planning on getting a other one?
skidork Posted - 27 mars 2008 : 12:35:30
STOLEN!

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but here goes.

They smashed my left rear window, and stole my 7100 from the LIRR train station I was parked at.

Lesson learned: You must take the mounting bracket off the windshield (I didn't do it because it was too much trouble - duh!) Even thought I hid the actual unit from view, they will break into your car to see if you did that if they see any evidence of a GPS.

olengrumpy Posted - 21 févr. 2008 : 01:43:33
Success!

I tried a few resets and then tried this..
I removed the memory card and tried to boot up the 7100...
It did exactly the same thing as before.. Just the Logo would be on the screen...

After using the reset 3 times while it was still "on" and the SD card still out, I got a screen asking for the memory card..

Popped it in and it ran like a charm..

I could not duplicate the problem here either..
The turn by turn worked with no problem and it told the correct way to go..

I guess just some sort of processor burp..

I can't thank you enough for helping me walk through this..

Best wishes.. Rich..
aer Posted - 20 févr. 2008 : 18:12:25
Rich,
Don't feel bad. The manual blows, especially documentation of the resets and power switches.

You cannot remove the battery. The stylus pin reset is a soft reset. so is removal and reinsert of the card (when doing this use the stylus to press the card down and it will pop out and then use the stylus to press the card back down).

Does either of those soft resets work? Otherwise we can try a hard reset.
olengrumpy Posted - 20 févr. 2008 : 14:54:21
I am only using the reset button on the 7100 itself.

I have no real instructions on how do a hard reset..

Is it a matter of just removing the battery?

Thanks for the response..
Rich...
aer Posted - 20 févr. 2008 : 05:06:24
Sorry if I was not clear as to the reason. The reasons are:
a) to see if I could duplicate a lock up.
b) to see if google maps shows the same error (in which case it isn't Navigon's fault.

I cannot duplicate a lock up entering the addresses you gave and going to show turn by turn, or for that matter with simulation. Although the navigon correctly showed west springfield, I manually entered union street in springfield and also had no lock up condition.

Furthermore Google maps exact location for "Union St. West Springfield, Masschusetts" as Navigon returned to me. My garmin returned same location as well. I did notice that this address is variously in navteq and teleatlas as in fact "Union St, West Springfield, Hampden, MA 01089"

So Navigon does exactly what Garmin and google maps do when entering the address you gave.

What method of reset are you trying? soft reset or hard reset?

2) Install a third party software. I use http://www.glopus.de/

Is there any information on this software in any of the Navigon threads here at gpspassion? Does it run along side of the Navigon map software? I translated some of the german pages but don't really see how it works.
wallstreet123456 Posted - 12 févr. 2008 : 14:24:16
aer,

I thought you mentioned earlier that a contact of yours at Navigon gave you the impression that 99% you felt the map update would be free. Is that still your feeling? What do other makers usually charge for upgrades? I never owned a GPS before so I have no idea what to expect here but I would not be happy but then again I want my unit to work properly so I will pay if it is required.

aer Posted - 12 févr. 2008 : 13:12:52
mgreen: Not with the included software.

It is frustrating since there are a lot of times when you want to do this, such as finding the location for a kids party in a large municipal park, finding a family grave in a large cemetery, finding friends along a beach.

You can see your coordinates in real time through the menus. If you want to be able to enter coordinates your choices are:
1) get a Garmin. They saw the need for this beyond campers and hikers, included it on all their car navs, and in any case the Garmin products have easily double the battery life anyway.
2) Install a third party software. I use http://www.glopus.de/

Wallstreet:
When I last looked a the Navigon US site I noted the dates of the map updates and fresh have now been changed from March to April.

From November to January Navigon stated that the "first update" was to address routing. People asked about routing issues and Navigon consistently said don't worry in January there will be a software update to address this. Now they have revised this to say there never was any routing problem, the update was never designed to do deal with the non existent routing problem imagined by its users. So draw your own conclusions.

Justin (aka weatheryoko, who has done extensive testing and xml work) has come to the conclusion long ago that the US map has problems. I think so as well. He thinks it may be data corruption. I know there is some data corruption since that is what seems to cause the Navigons to freeze and require boot when routing some areas. But from comparing to Nuvi routing for same routs I tend to think certain road classes have been combined or changed in Navigon's versions of the same maps. The European users are not seeing bad routing with European maps.

I can't figure out what is up. they admitted the main issue was routing, stated to customers that this update "1.1" was designed to deal with routing, and now are saying "what routing issues?"

I can only figure that they determined what we users already know, was the maps but that that this would be too expensive to fix since they have to pay license fees for the maps. So they wont spend the $40 license fee to Navteq for 2008 maps on the $600 to $400 purchasers of 7100's like you and I because they don't want to also give maps to the $99 purchasers of all the 2100T's sold at a significant loss.

Is there any way to set a destination using coordinates rather than a street address?
wallstreet123456 Posted - 11 févr. 2008 : 21:47:23

What do you think we can expect from Navigon, both map and software updates shortly or have we re eived all that we are going to receive.

I can't believe we can't get replacement parts yet from them.

No offense, but since you have made the stunning claim that the 7100 routes better than the 660, which really goes against all the comparison tests several of us who own both Garmins and Mavigons have run, what is it exactly you expect to report?
wallstreet123456 Posted - 11 févr. 2008 : 21:42:21
I was told that they will be releasing an update in March that should correct some issues with routing but if others here say the trouble is with the maps then I am not sure how they will be able to do this. From my understanding reading hear I think the issue is how they have made the maps fix onto the sd card and if they would have just used the 4gb card to begin with they might not have had any issues.
scandrett Posted - 11 févr. 2008 : 21:38:35

As I stated the update in germany did not help routing, did you realy think they could fix there problems, no amout of treaking or updates can fix the bad map data.
NYC Traveler Posted - 07 févr. 2008 : 03:39:55
I downloaded the new software update. The instructions were clear and helpful. The download was a piece of cake. You do have to redo your settings after the update. I had saved my favorites and recent destinations and just dragged them into the updated folder.

I will be testing it on the road soon. Just got back from trips to Chicago, Atlanta and Pittsburgh and had no problems. Only complaint was the map showed me to take a right turn as I merged onto another highway, and the voice said a left. Go figure.

In April, I am taking vacation in Italy and France. I just found out from a Navigon service rep that the 2007/2008 downloadable European map set can only be loaded on a 7100 by using Navigon Fresh software and the code hasn't been written yet for the U.S. units. Makes my day! If I want to navigate over there, I will have to use my old IQ 3600 Garmin. When I bought the 7100, I was assured several times by the customer service reps that I could load the Europe maps and use them in my unit. Somebody lied and I am Pi**ed!!

I just wish they would get their act together.

there's a thread discussing about the update. Use it to seek reviews, add comments, etc. 'bout the 1.1 firmwire update.

Thanks Lambo!

I'm downloading and installing now. I probably won't be actually using it for real until the weekend. They didn't mention any changes to the routing algorithms...

The first of the new Updates are now available. I just checked the Navigon web site and happened across a new (released four days ago)software update for the 7100. It purports to improve POI searches, improves voice guidance, has TTS improvements, improved Bluetooth stability, and a few other items. It is at https://www.navigon.com/site/us/en/my_navigon/products_us/software_updates

I already downloaded - time to read the Download and Installation Guide and see how this works.

If you are talking aobut sound quality throught he stereo, it will be identical between a $20 mp3 player, an iphone or ipod or an 8100.

Nontheless my main point was on utility of mp3 and nav on one device. The navigation of albums and songs maybe different and you may have preferences, but there is an objective and clear advantage to having the music pause automatically during a call, or momentarily during a navigation annoucement, and that is something you not get that using your iphone or ipod to play music through your car stereo, but which you will get with an 8110 or most every integrated nav+car stereo.

There are advantages and disadvantages with multiple function devices. If you look on the german navigon forums plenty of people have bought interrupt circuits which allow input of the nav or bluetooth phone into the car stereo and interrupt the music. If you are playing the music and sending the phone through nav unit already this is unneeded.

Matter of an opinion on that iPhone vs. $20 player, don't you think? I connect my iPhone to my car stereo, and being able to slide my finger down the list to scroll to a song is great. And now with the 1.1.3 update, being able to click on the cover art to get the song lyrics rocks. But this is not an iPhone forum, right?

The problem is that if you are playing mp3's on your iphone through your car stereo there is no pause when phone call or a navigation instruction comes on from the navigator. if the navigator is playing the mp3's the music will pause or mute when a navigation instruction comes on or a call comes through. Since this is a major feature in integrated OEM car nav/stereos, and a high demand item in aftermarket solutions, there is a big benefit to playing your mp3's through the portable nav. oh, and contrary to spin the iphone doesn't play an mp3 better than a $20 mp3 player

Is it just me or did the color scheme of the user interface change on navigon's home page? It looks like they updated the current hardware line to reflect the new software (notice the color differences between what we have now and what is depicted). I smell that update soon...

Or was it always like that and I'm just hallucinating?

What cracks me up is all those features that Navigon Marketing said users "don't want" like FM transmitter, MP3 Player, the ability to use device to show pictures and movies files, and download of contacts via bluetooth(important for dialing and navigating to contacts) are teh main additions to this model. lol

All the Navigon products give you an option to add favorites, which is not exactly a POI, but your favorite place. I think the default # of favorites are 50. If you add/change/delete favorites using Navigon's interface, etc. it can't void any warranty. I am not sure, but I don't think you can add any POIs specifically into the POI database.
Next, although the device SD card does show up in Explorer once USB connected, ideally you're not supposed to make any changes or add anything into any folders/files of the SD card.

Also, this is NOT the correct thread to ask this question. I happened to see it, mostly it might remain un-answered. Refer to the sticky to review where to post please.

Have they (Navigon) said what this release will fix? I was driving on Long Island this weekend using my 7100 and it keeps flying through the radio stations for traffic info and not really staying on on specific station. I know there are many stations that carry the traffic data so I am confused why this would happen. Any ideas?
justflie Posted - 22 janv. 2008 : 06:55:47
Hey folks. I just talked to the Navigon program manager again. He didn't give an exact date for the firmware update, but said, "We're almost there. Stay tuned." Sounds like it is imminent. Final testing I would assume. The poor guy emailed me just a little while ago. Still working at midnight? Nice. Hard work = firmware in our hands sooner.

I agree with aer on this. I have experienced the same thing, including my home address which shows up two blocks away from where it is. But it is the same location on mapquest, etc., so it's not Navigon, but the maps.

It would be nice to be able to have the street number appear as I get there, but when I add it to custom destinations, it doesn't show up.

some issues are unique to Navigon but some derive from the Navteq source. Check google maps to see where it thinks this address is. If google maps is also wrong (as is usually the case in this type of problem) then it is the source maps not the device.

Maybe the March 08 date refers to the new maps, which are slated to release first quarter.

When I purchased my 7100 I was lead to believe that the update would be in January also..

I'm hoping that all of our letters to them pointing out the flaws in the system, has made them make more changes than originally planned and that we will have a better system as reward for our longer waiting time..
Let's hope that's the case anyway..
bm_ninada Posted - 20 janv. 2008 : 22:12:14
It was initially told the firm-wire upgrade in Jan. 08

My only real gripe with the unit is that in city settings it sends me 5 miles to complete a 3 mile trip.. It gets me there, but it sure does take the long way around..
I found no difference by using the the Fastest, shortest, etc. settings.
I hope the update cures this.. Otherwise a great unit..

I sent an e-mail asking about updates for the 7100..
This is a copy & paste of their reply..

Version 6.5 - build-77
CE Version: R08US.3.0709
Program: 070815-1636

Last night I navigated to a place in Yonkers, NY. The 7100 told me to stop too early on the street, so I got a little lost. Had to call a friend who told me it was on the same street but down further. That was my first issue with it.

Nikos, check and see what firm ware, software, and maps came with youe unit. Units in germany where shipped with updated software and maps before the updates where posted, maybe you have what we have been waiting for.

R08US.3.0709. That's the old/current software as far as I know.

Now that I have been using the unit, I have experienced a few weird things. Sometimes I will be instructed to make a U-Turn in weird areas/situations, but that is after going off-route and it quickly recalculates. Also, in two cases it thought I was on a road that ran parallel to the one I was actually on, since they were very close together. One time it instructed me to take a left into a house because it thought I was on an adjacent road.

Other than that it has been great so far. I'm also very happy with the POIs. I've found everything I've looked for so far. Not sure why there are so many complaints about them.

You never told us what software and map ver was on you unit, all you gave us was a firm ware ver. more info if you have it.

I'd go so far and say it doesn't work. Just today, I saw on map in parking lot where I was atm, bank, cvs, but when I hit POI, none of them showed up on list.

Well guys, I've been using the 7100 quite a bit since I got it. It just took me to Boston and back to Long Island. I didn't have any backup directions or anything, just plugged in and went with no problems whatsoever. I can't say I have any complaints about the unit.
justflie Posted - 17 janv. 2008 : 04:51:58
I dropped an email to their program manager again this evening (he's very good at answering emails relatively quickly) to see if they had nailed down a release date. I'll be sure to update everyone if they have done so yet. I probably wouldn't expect an email back til Monday, but we'll see.

pdragonfly, I might have misunderstood what you said. If you're referring to the map update, then yes, Q1 it is. The firmware/software update should be pretty soon.
justflie Posted - 17 janv. 2008 : 02:01:58
They'll be releasing it soon. I had talked with their program manager on about the 15th of December asking if the update will be released in January. While he didn't say January specifically, he did say, "With regards to the update, you are correct that this planned for the coming weeks. This is in the final stages of R&D right now. This software update (and all future updates) will be available to any and all 7100 users for free. "
pdragonfly Posted - 17 janv. 2008 : 00:26:12
I went to the site today looking to see what kind of 4gb memory card is compatible for my Navigon 5100. All I can say is the FAQ's stink. If they are going to please us they'll have to do better than their FAQ's in the update.
Also, said first quarter for update.
justflie Posted - 16 janv. 2008 : 22:59:35
We might be in for an update very soon. I visited the Navigon website yesterday and today. Yesterday, there was a different format to the support site and a "download center" available for each device, even though there was only a datasheet or something available. I went back to the site today and the support section is very different and there is no mention of a download center. Hopefully that means that the firmware updates have been finished and they're modifying the website links (thus taking "download center" offline) for us to grab them.

Of course, it could just mean that I can't find the new place where they put the download center. Anyone have insight on this?

Hi Kelvin.
Think this is part of the 6.5 software and maps and I'm sure I have read somewhere (Maybe this thread) that someone was running this on a 7000 unit.
Trouble is I'm not sure if the 7110 software is specific to that unit or whether you can use it on the 7000.

Can you check with your Maplins the software version that it is running. Ideally you want a demo to see if the reality view is in the options menu.

I also think the reality view is great. Came into use when leaving the M60 anticlockwise to join the M61 northbound which I hadn't used before. Nightmare junction

Alister,
I think you miss the point. Lots of routes in the US have been tested between the Navigon, and googlemaps, garmin (all three use same US source maps), as well as tomtom and magellen.

Yes, I must admit that I was looking at it from a European standpoint.
If you are getting good response from Navigon support, and they are indeed addressing your issues, you are getting a better deal than Europeans are from Garmin.

Sorry!
garym Posted - 11 janv. 2008 : 21:58:31
Well mine arrived today at last. Europe version.
Not had much of a chance to play yet but have noticed a few things that I didn't expect, to do with the traffic info.

- There is no traffic indicator on the map screen to let you know you have received messages.
- The traffic message filter option seems to be broken. If I choose to only show traffic on route it will always display zero messages even though I can see the route passes through an incident.
- I assumed you would get an option to avoid a traffic incident but cannot test because it always assumes you have no messages on your route
- There is no severity colour code on the traffic info message, just a white circle with GB in it.

Unit looks great and I actually like the mount

There's a sticker on the bottom that says "Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Core". Expected this to be 5.0.

Came with 6.5.1 build 351

Alister, I think you miss the point. Lots of routes in the US have been tested between the Navigon, and googlemaps, garmin (all three use same US source maps), as well as tomtom and magellen. The Navigon performs worst on routing. It is an objective observation. One gets nutty routing more often, longer routing more often and as others have noted, objective problems such as being taken on and off the same highway during a single trip. Moreover Navigon acknowledges they have a routing problem in the US.

Perhaps they are better tuned for road classes in the UK and especially continental Europe and did not fully test out US road classes.

Navigon supposedly has a whole team of engineers trying to figure out why their US routing is objectively worse than every other major player on the market. That is what they are saying in response to the known problems.

There are always times when a computer will do something which seems, on the face of it, illogical.
Years ago I had a SmartSt navigation sleeve for my PDA, and that software used to route me off a major road down a single-track road for 500yds, and then rejoin the original major road. The software decided that the saving of 175yds was worth the inconvenience.
Navigon 5 (which I now use on the PDA) takes me off a freeway, across a road junction, and back on to the freeway at exactly the same junction!! I STILL don't know why, because it seems to be a longer distance than staying on the freeway.
I also ignore the route planned if I think that I know better. The satnav won't sulk like a human navigator, although my wife says that she thinks the voice saying "make a U-turn now" does take on a frustrated tone when I continue to ignore it! (But I think she's making it up!!!)
wallstreet123456 Posted - 10 janv. 2008 : 15:14:09
As I have said before the main issue I have come across with routing issues is that when I am on a highway the Navigon takes me off at times only to bring me back on it a mile or two later. I am not computer programmer but you would think that they can somehow put in the algorithem something that will check if it wants to take you off the highway and then later puts you back on that it would just keep you on the highway.

Other than that I have not had any other issues to be honest.
