In answer to a question about Navigon in Europe I wrote this comment on page 52 : Navigon have been shipping navigation software in Germany for nearly 10 years, at the time it was on laptops, so they have accumulated a huge experience. They expanded to Europe in early 2004 and after some fine tuning of the routes, they are generally considered throughout Europe as the better software when it comes to the quality of routes. So they know what they're doing, how long it will take them to optimize the US routing engine is anyone's guess though, but they'll get there I'm sure ;-)
They had a bit of a hiccup in their strategy from 2004 to 2007 though as they went the safe OEM route when TomTom went for in-house devices, much more costly upfrotn. They worked with big names like Sony, Blaupunkt, Becker, but most failed to in the market so Navigon were left with little brand recognition and we all know what happened with the TomTom brand worldwide. They changed their strategy in early 2007, we'll see if they can catch up...so far they haven't been very successful it seems even in France.

UPDATED 20070718 : Have been doing some driving while I am vacationing in the SF Bay Area, and here are some comments and pictures :
1. Route calculations are not optimized compared to TomTom v7 on the 720 : it had me use a main road with a lot of lights instead of a freeway. While that choice could have been acceptable to start with, it then insisted on rerouting me to that original route for way too long. Then it proceeded to have me zigzag around a quite neighboorhood instead of making a couple of turns like the 720. See details below
2. View of the map is too "high" and cluttered with POIs, see below
3. A nice plus is the display of the maximum speed on some roads
4. RV is "nice" as in "wow" factor, but I'm not sure it really adds a lot compared to the "extended lanes"
5. There is no "carpool" lane option

ADDED BY GPSPASSION : The big news on the 7100 of course is the addition of "Reality View" (RV), that Navigon worked on with Zenrin, they are the Navteq/TeleAtlas) equivalents in Japan where "Reality View" has been available for several years. It goes one step further from the "extended lanes" provided by Navteq. While RV is very impressive, it is a "static" view so you lose your sense of progress when getting close to an intersection (there is only a little dot progression on the bottom left).

I tested it extensively in Europe and found it to work well, although the 3D view is a bit "high" and "distant", but is should be tweakable in the .ini files. One question was about the street names, they can be activated. People who are comparing it to Garmin or TomTom AIOs should be aware that the Navigon UI is slower (menu browsing, address searching).
I'm currently using it in California and have found some odd routes, will need a bit more time and will report back.

Also another thing has anyone figured out how to sync your contacts up with the navigon? I know they say you can in the manual but does not seem possible.. They are using Bluesoleil for connections. |

Ah figured it out the sate of Hawaii is on it's own SD card and the rest of the sates on another.
However kinda disapointed sounds like the system is not fast enough that sometimes the voice will stutter a bit. and I already had one fatal error crash already. |

Ok the 7100 came and like the picture has two SD cards which confuse me..
One says Navigon 7100 North America (excludes Mexico) and the other card just says North America (sans Mexico).. both the cards are the same? |

My unit came with one SD card and you download the map updates from Navigons site and they store on the SD card in the GPS unit. |

I have a question I just won this item on ebay just curious in the seller's picture I see what seems to be two SD cards but I downloaded the manual and looked at all the reviews and it only seems to have 1 SD card?
the map updates comes on a SD card? I'm a little confused about this |

Try eBay in the US, I know the German maps worked for a friend of mine on a 7100. Do note belive they are the latest maps. Most are really the Q4_2007 maps.

Received my Navigon 7100 last Christmas. Finally got to really test it. I just completed a long trip from NE Ohio to Miami then on to Tampa to Daytona and back home to Ohio.
While driving noticed 7100 was giving me weird routing, touched Options, noticed I had it set in Optimum mode, changed it on the fly to Shortest route and crazy routing stopped immediately and went the way I expected it to go.
So I conclude that goofy routing is because of the settings made by the user. While driving home, we had to use the WV turnpike, it tried to route us off I-77 which was incorrect, tapped Options again and realized I had set it to "avoid turnpikes". Changed that setting, and routing was then perfect.
After reading so many complaints about routing, check your options and change them to shortest or fastest. It worked for me. {by the way, also had maps from AAA Club as backup so I new what route was best} It also routed us around a construction mess in Tampa after we were told to go a different way. Navigon took us the easiest and least used route. Love my Navigon.
Only one thing left to work on, the speed profiles. Notice the time was off and the speed never matched the car. It was reading about 3-5 mph slower. I haven't changed my speed profiles yet, but that's next. Didn't use the 1.2 update either. Still using 1.1. Put 1.2 on a new SD card and unit acted funny right before leaving, so I left it home. Just downloaded another copy of 1.2 in case first one had bad data. Notice only one speed profile needed on 1.2 according to other posts. Is that correct? |

that I would download from the European site. I am planning a trip
to France next month and would like to get the Navigon maps from the
UK site. I don't believe the rep - has anyone done this or tried this?

Immediately after the Navigon starts to boot, press the bottom button and hold. The unit will boot into the WinCE operating system. There will be a thin gray line at the bottom of the screen. Use a stylus to tap the thin line and the WinCE Start bar will appear. Can be use to operate other WinCE programs from an SD card. |

Trying to figure out what something is. When you plot a route and the preview comes up, what is the information in the "Total" box on the right? I get "xxx mi" "00:00 with a timer icon? and a 00:00 with a flag. The last one looks like maybe total time till destination but it has a "p" like maybe it's an am-pm thing. This trip takes 5 1/2 hours on Google Maps and the values I have are: 344 - 06:42 - 05:41p.
The manual doesn't really help much. |
