I was smoking down the interstate at about 80mph.

I ditched the 660 and picked up the 680, which came with v3.3. I upgraded to 3.5 for the daylight savings change. I don't notice the lag to be as bad. I was trying to drive by looking only at the gps & not the windshield. Luckly now little old ladies were walking their dogs.

When I updated from v3.20 to v3.50 and the software was loading, a GPSBuddy icon show-up for a couple of seconds and then disappear. It never show again, did anybody see it too?

Definitely I've never seen lag of 100 meters or more. Were you going 200 Km/h? ;-)

I don't have this terrible "lag" on my 660. Maybe the screen update is 2-3 meters behind but I consider this somewhat reasonable lag. I mean, if you notice 2 meters of lag and are comparing the screen to the intersection you enter, perhaps you should watch out your window so you don't smack into that cyclist or the lady walking her baby.

I've noticed that sometimes when I'm on an Interstate highway at higher speeds (which makes the 660 auto zoom out to show a larger area) and am passing through urban areas where there are lots and lots of small streets, it will slow the 660 down, lag time is more noticeable; there is a LOT of detail to keep up with. Having the map detail set to "Most" also would slow it down some (I do almost always have mine set to "Most" though, too). WAAS should be turned OFF from what I've read -- with the newer chips used in the 660/680 it isn't needed, as I understand it. And yes, MP3s playing would also be a factor; I use my iPod for music rather than the 660.

I think you may be right about the faulty unit. I returned it to Sam's today and then headed over to Best Buy and got the Nuvi 680 with the MSN service. I did a brief stint down I75 towards Dallas was noticed about a 1 sec delay, which is much better that what I had with the 660. THe new 680 came with v3.3 firmware and I think I'm leaving it alone for now.

Other thoughs that may increase the lag. All these could drag on the uP. Tell me what you think:
1. Map detail is set to "Most"
2. View is in "3D"
3. WAAS is "on" or perhaps "off"
4. Anything pulling processor cycles, such as MP3's playing.

Mike, sounds to me like you may have a defective unit ... my 660 has never been so slow that I've missed an exit, and I've logged a few thousand miles on mine. I'm currently using version 3.5.
smokinbike Posted - 17 mars 2007 : 17:23:02
The GPS warned me verbally and with the exit name at the top of the screen in time. But if I watch the car on the map I would be a good 100+ yards past the exit before the map caught up.

A couple days I had 3 people with me for business, so I had the volume turned very low and I was relying on watching the car on the map. This caused me to miss my exit several times, especially where many roads ran together.

One of the guys with me has a Nuvi 350 and he started paying attention to the problem and told me his 350 performed much better.

I'm still within my return period, so I'm thinking of doing an exchange to see what happens.

Thanks for you response.

Mike:

Welcome to the forum.

Are you saying that with a route active it failed to warn you to take the exit? Or are you saying that while watching the map with no route active it did not keep the icon updated enough?

If the former, that sounds like something is wrong. If the latter, were you in 2D or 3D mode? In 3D this effect is more pronounced, so try 2D and see if that suits you better.

The nuvi updates its position once a second, so at 60 mph you have traveled 88 feet since the last update.

Hi,
Just joined the forum after buying the Nuvi 660 last weekend. I immediately upgraded from v2.4 of the firmware to v3.5. Driving from Austin, TX to Dallas this week I noticed considerable lags (2-4 seconds) from actual exits from I35 and what the map showed. When I actually went under an overpass, the accuracy was very good, but it didn't know the exit's very well. I kept setting target destinations along the way that would require me to exit every few miles and it consistantly would miss the exit. If you use the map to make your exit you'd smoke by it everytime.

I'm an inch from returning the unit because this was so bad. Could this just be the firmware or is Garmin's accuracy this bad?

I love everything else about this unit, but my old Magellan 760 navigated much better.

Thanks,
Mike

I've never noticed any lag of any kind, but maybe either I don't know what I'm looking for, or it's not enough to really bother me. Rolando, I know what you mean. It's hard to sit there that long with nothing happening. I think Garmin should put up a notice to the effect that it takes a long time for the SW to load, and not to touch or punch buttons.

Do you think that may be the problem some are having, e.g. not waiting long enough, and start punching buttons?

Glad I wasn't the only one. I actually started to hold the power button until something came on the screen that said 'loading software' or something to that effect.
gpspassion Posted - 15 mars 2007 : 00:40:35
WebUpdater for me and it went fine.

Others have said the "lag" is still there, it seems to me it's been reduced, but without two units running side by side there's no way to know for sure.

I just installed update. I unplugged it and it took about 2 minutes or so for the unit to load the software and get to the main menu.

I updated the traffic to 4.0 no problems. Seems response time is quicker unit goes from red to amber to green relatively quickly. But since the update my traffic access button on the main screen does not light up even though light turns green. Anybody have any insight?
