I finally completed the GPS Map Database.

Here it is: World Map Database (no direct linking please, link to this thread instead)

It has every country listed and links to maps that are suitable for GPS Navigation and calibration. It's split into 2 sections. The first section has a list of commercial products that can either do GPS navigation or at least route planning. The second section are free maps all over the web that can be downloaded and calibrated. I have not included any maps that are too vague (like CIA fact book maps etc...) so all maps are suitable for navigation.

I wasn't able to find maps for every single country out there, so some are still blank. But so far there are over 2000 maps, covering the majority of the world.

Feel free to post new links that I have not found and will add them to the database.

I am still planning to put together a write up with some tips on calibration, general databases that are available out there with lat/long locations and some other useful stuff.

gpspassion.
May be you can add this to the website with an interface, so that it can be interactive?

where do i download the maps from? i cant see any map packs with this link?

assuming i down have any internet on the move i want to be able to download all the maps before i go - load them onto a pda device and use the pda as a GPS navigation unit.

i will be travelling through remote places such as mongolia and kazakstan where there a few good maps on google! so i will have to download specialist maps, however i am unsure where to start !

advice would be greatly apperciated.

If it's any help then this link is very useful for your needs.
http://www.schaik.com/gps/gemglobal/gemglobal.html

You have to download the maps you will need for your journey before you go, (unless you have mobile internet!), and there is no routing - just simple position mapping. The Google database looks the best.
Satellite map downloads look like they are limited to about 100 per day if you need them. The next day you can start again.

You can run the appication as many times as you like so with for example GPSGate from www.franson.com you can show mapping at different zoom levels in different windows. Could be useful.

I am trying to plan a road trip from London to Mongolia! alot of these links are dead.

Does anyone know if there is a more upto date list with active links or a full map pack with the maps already included?

Just a quick message to let you know.

Several of your links for maps in Korea are broken, specifically the ones that use "www.korea.net". Seems they have rearranged their site (which they do with rather frustrating frequency here).

I took a quick look for original maps but couldn't find them.

If you want other links, there is a useful "slippy" map at
http://maps.naver.com/
All in Korean, but the interface is easy enough to figure out.
(quick note: the tiles for the slippy map are actually kept in the browser cache, so you can capture them and stitch them together to create an actual full map image).

Two other sites that use a proprietary download to the browser are
http://www.myipq.com/hosting/government/knto/map/eng/main_korea.htm
http://ebook.myipq.com/skin/cibrowser/KNTO/ebook.php?bookNo=061220171848#
(maps in English)

Thanks for keeping the list.

I have been waiting for a map of Greece 9inc Islands) that will work on my hp pda with Tom Tom Nav 5.

Anybody out there have any idea if there is one?

(PS: when I visit Greece, all the taxi drivers in Athens seem to have a good quality map on their PDAs.)

Hi

I am new to gps, so any help would be gratefully appreciated.

I have searched the net for a map of Cyprus which I can use on my TomTom Go 910, I have found one that is a .vtm file and have found out that TomTom use a .mms file.

If anyone has a tool for converting this or any explaination as to how I can use this map, then I would be very grateful.

Or if anyone knows where I can get a map of Cyprus, again Iwould be very grateful.

Hi guys just wanted to post you with an update: Newer updates version maps of India are now out ... i purchased these maps from www.itemsofdesire.com yesterday and they seem pretty good ... the 3d Navigation coupled with voice prompting seems to work well even on slower devices now and the accuracy is much better now!

I tend to keep dead links in the database because some of them either reappear back eventuallyor appear in other places so at least people know that such map existed and can google it.
I am not sure if it would be better to just remove them right away.

admin_0 Posted - 07 oct. 2006 : 14:42:33
I'm going to the southwest of US to drive around for 11 days, and I'm quite confused about how to get a US map for my Medion (Navigon) version 5.1 navigational system.

I'm renting a car from AVIS, and they hire out navigational systems for $9.95/day, but since I already have my Medion, I would of course prefer to use that, but the problem is, that I only have maps of European countries.

Does anybody know how to get free maps of the southwestern US that will fit on to my Medion?

I have downloaded a few maps found via the maps database mentioned in the first post of this forum, but I can't make it work, since Medion requires the file extension of the mapfile to be ".map".

Can I use map data with other fileextensions, and then transform it into *.map format?

Thanks all. Having been an avid C320 user for a year or so I've recently got up to speed on making customised maps for the Garmin units and just about have it figured out. It seemed to me this could be interesting to perhaps add a link to any such free digital maps on igurevich's excellent database ... here is one of Croatia http://gps-maps.info/en/index/download

Plus - thanks for the link to the commercial map - that I'd also be interested in.

@stevepowers - not easy to add non Garmin maps to a Garmin unit, you have to make your own with tools like http://www.geopainting.com/en/

@GSC - you'll need a moving map application, a good place to start -> http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=65

Gonen.
Thanks for the NavnGo update. I saw the original release and the problem that I noticed was that when you select in what language you want it displayed it automatically loaded both the interface and the map in the same language, which is very annoying if you're in Israel. In the new iGo is it the same way? It would be better to be able to load the interface in English and still chose the Hebrew map for those who can read but don't speak the language very well. Like Di does it. Otherwise the street names transliterated into English don't make any sense half the time.

There is going to be one Product I-Go it should be released in Israel in the next few dayes with Israel , East and west Europe maps on 1 minisd or SD 1GB card . (USA maps will be released in the near future as well) I saw the pre release version it has an amazing video performance and the option to navigate all around the globe from country to country is going to change the way we used to navigate in the past.

AND releases new maps for Turkey

Rotterdam, 3 April 2006 - AND Automotive Navigation Data, leading provider of worldwide digital mapping data for 'in-car' and personal navigation, has added Turkey to its Central and Eastern European map database. The new digital map are the first results of the expansion of AND's Indian production facility.

ViaMichelin is not mentionned in the "Commercial Products", and only once in the "Free Maps" (for Andorra).

MapSonic is not mentionned anywhere, neither in the "Commercial Products", nor in the "Free Maps".

Did we really miss ViaMichelin in the database, it must surely be under its original name then, MapSonic ! Does it really have maps for the UAE now, oh that's infomap, ok.

Great compilation, very helpful! Thanks a lot.

Just to contribute something, there are a couple of commercial GPS navigation and map software not yet mentionned in this database:

http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/jsp/nav/MaNavigationHome.jsp

It has maps for most Western Europe, and a couple of Eastern Europe countries.

http://www.informap.ru/english/products/pda/pda_gps/index.html

It has maps for the United Arab Emirates.

Concerning other GPS navigation softwares like TomTom and Digi-Map, there are quite a few new maps released, in particular for Eastern Europe.

Great compilation of useful information for us travellers. Are you an avid traveller, igurevich38? I did contact NavTurk, and their latest version can be read in English, as well as Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian, and of course Turkish. It does look like an all in one unit, tho. D'ya think I can use it with my laptop, and if so do I need some compatible software?

Poland - 18% of the area is now covered in TomTom Navigator 5. The largest cities have street addresses, most of cities with only stret names. All international, national and regional roads (plus some local) included.
Warsaw (the capital) has been made pretty well. Many POIs.
Waiting for further improvements...

The names on English maps are written in Pin Yin which is the official way of writing Chinese using English characters. So many of them can read it (it's taught in school), as long as they are educated. If you will stay in cities then it will be useful, but in the country probably not. In Shanghai most streets were labeled in Pin Yin also, but I don't know what the story with Taiwan is.
gpspassion Posted - 20 mai 2005 : 02:15:19
That's a thought although I'll probably just get a paper map and then compare with what I see on MapKing. It doesn't seem locals use the English names anyway ;-)

Here are the English Mapking maps, but you're right I don't see Taiwan on there. I guess they didn't make one yet.
http://www2.mapking.com/en/MapKingDowloadPageEng2.htm
The same map works for the PC and PPC version.

If you want to get fancy, when in Taiwan you can easily buy a paper map that has both English and Chinese on it (I got one in Shanghai) for $2 and then if you bring with you a little scanner you can calibrate it in Ozi. I have a Canon LIDE 35 scanner that's the size of a standard piece of paper and fits easily into a back pack.
gpspassion Posted - 20 mai 2005 : 01:43:40
No, so I've been painstakingly matching the mapking maps with online maps http://www.taiwan-map.com/EngMap/search_a.asp !
Where did you find these maps in English ? Anyway, having maps in English in Taiwan probably wouldn't do too much good anyway as all the street signs are in Chinese I'm told.

gpspassion Posted - 20 mai 2005 : 01:09:11
Since I will soon be travelling to Taiwan I have been lookin at maps and foudnd the following:
1. You have MapKingv2 and MapKing2003, not sure what the difference is, but both have an interface in English and maps in Chinese. Installing CE-Star (free if you just use it to decode fonts it seems) then the rendering will be improved so you might be able to show the map to cab driver ;-)

2. Not much in the way of topo maps, Berkeley have some apparently but access is reserved to UC students. There are some topo maps for Garmin units as seen here but I'm not sure how/if they can be bought outside Taiwan.

Some updates for your section on Chile.

The movilemap.cl link appears to be dead.

I could not find any information on the chile inter@ctivo CD Rom listed on the Turistel site. Turistel is a company that publishes annual paper volumes of guides to Chile in Spanish. Sort of the Chilean version of the Michelin guide. That's their main business and they don't seem to do much in the way of electronic maps. I sort of expect that their CD Rom is more of a tourist guide with lots of text rather than electronic maps. Their books are more like Loney Planet books in that they are 95% text with occasional regional maps and maps of certain urban areas.

However, I did discover a company in Chile that is producing routable Garmin maps of Chile that will work in all the common Garmin mapping GPS units. The company is called GPS Chile and their website is here: http://www.gpschile.com/mapas_gps.html

I emailed them for more information on purchasing and/or downloading their products but haven't yet received a reply. However I have found them available for purchase online through Falabella, a large department store chain in Chile:

http://www.todomercado.com/aviso/ExtIr.do?idAviso=1106540509752
http://www.todomercado.com/aviso/ExtIr.do?idAviso=1106540509753

The price in dollars comes to about $230 at today's exchange rate. I will probably buy them on my next trip to Chile and see how good they are.

Igurevich38, you may try to auto-translate either just a specific text or a whole page from Italian or other languages to English: http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en

It is not a perfect translation, but if you need the information it usually helps quite a bit.

You need to get OziExplorer (www.oziexplorer.com) and calibrate the maps on the PC. You don't need your GPS to calibrate if you already have the UTM coordinates of known points on the maps. Then you will convert the images using Ozi to OZF2 format and use those files on PPC using OziCE.

Where did you get maps of Paraguay?
