UPDATED 20061001 - firmware - new gps testing , R6

WINTEC WBT-100/200 - Bluetooth, USB and Datalogger GPS - REVIEW

Can'get much smaller than that, can it ?

Compared to the Holux GR-236 and to the Globalsat BT-338

News item on the portal
The Wintec WBT-200 had been in development since last year and is now becoming available in the USA Semsons. A forum member had pointed it out to me last year but I had not been able to obtain a test model at the time. With Semsons now carrying it, that became possible and they sent me a WBT-100 test unit in May, the WBT-100 is the WBT-200 with a built-in compass, but it is not integrated very usefully in the unit yet (only blinks fast when facing North) and requires a connection to a PC for actual readings that don't appear to be accurate.

20061001 : new R6 firmware and new tools, details >> here <<
20060722 : new R4 firmware and new tools, details >> here <<
Here are my observations and measurements :
  1. Form factor: the WBT is indeed very small, it feel like a small "pebble" and has a nice rubbery feel to it, one of the best designs I've seen

  2. GPS Performance :
    1. Fastrax/uNav chipset : I was curious to its performance as it uses a Fastrax chipset, which is a variation of the uNav chipset that did not perform very well on the Emtac S3 GPS in the chipset review last year.
    2. Good TTFF and Guidance : It had no trouble getting a fix with the standard 45/50 seconds in a good environment for a cold reset and providing some good guidance in the small streets of Paris connected to a JasJar running iGo 2006
    3. Sensitivity : with its logger feature, it was important for it to have good sensitivity and it disappoints a bit in that area, not reaching the level of a SiRFstarIII unit or of the Nemerix v4 based GPS as seen in the table below. While it remains decent with some margin above the required 3 satelltites it did lose the fix a bit even placed directly under the windshield

    4. Accuracy : a close inspection of the actual tracks showed that it did not offer tracking as precise as the Nemerix v4 based iBlue that excelled in the challenging environment seen in the picture below or as the SiRFstarIII BT-338 that had some problems as well. This is likely due to less advanced multipath management. Not a problem for casual use, but it you need good accuracy in an urban environment then you should keep this in mind. Repeated the same test run after upgrading to firmware v690 and found the same results.

    5. Blue=BT338, Green=iBlue, Red=WBT100

  3. Battery life : comes in at about 11 hours for continuous GPS use, which is quite a feat considering the size of the battery, of the BL-4C type, previously used on the Royaltek RBT-1000 and 2001, where it was only good for 6 hours of continuous use.

  4. USB GPS : There have been other mixed Bluetooth/USB GPS receivers in the past from Holux and Fortuna, but they required a special USB cable, not so with the WBT-200 that can be used as a mouse GPS with a standard USB cable, a first.

  5. Data Logger : The data logger works as expected and the G-Tool PC software (can be downloaded here if you want to demo it) has a convenient feature to convert a log directly to the Google Earth format on top of .GPX and Papago (MapKing). You can choose automatic modes or record data at a set time or distance and it can log up to 12,680 points. Update : I did some more testing, logging the position every 30 minutes as I was hoping it would go into some kind of "push to fix" mode for extended use, but it only turned off Bluetooth and I was able to log 34 points so that's about 17 hours of battery life, still an improvement over the original 11 hours. No impact switching to one hour logging

  6. Easy firmware upgrades : another first, most likely because there is a "safe" native USB connection, you can upgrade the WBT via the PC app using the latest firmware downloaded from the site of the manufacturer. I easily upgraded the WBT-100 to the v690 version in a few seconds although my first attempt was unsuccessfull following an unrelated problem on my PC.
Final words : An interesting unit overall with a very pleasing form factor and some novel features at at a good price (currently $95 before the 10% GpsPasSion Club discount). A bit more sensitivity and accuracy would have been nice for more advanced use, but I understand the Wintec engineers are fine-tuning the firmware so that might come later.

Any questions or comments ?

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with the wintec hardware playing catchup on your position?

I have 2 wintec and 1 does it but the other works fine.

I have the device setup to poll every 5 sec on the log, and what I see is that every say few minutes the GPS will jump around 60m.

I also have the problem of getting to a waypoint, I can leave the GPS there (saying I am 60m away still, and watch it count down 1 metre a minute until it says I am where I am (I hope this makes sense:))

Any help is appreciated.

[SOLVED] Wintec WBT-200 firmware upgrade disaster.

I just tried to upgrade to the latest firmware (3.31.6230R43) under G-Tool V2.85, strictly following instructions:
The procedure failed unrecoverably (firmware erased, unit unusable)

Has anyone else had to deal with this problem?

update [SOLVED] :
Wintec's HOWTO ( ) needs some interpretation:

1- where it says a failed SOFT upgrade destroys the receiver is simply not true, fortunately.

2- description of HWNOWAIT upgrade should emphasize that it must be done without reinserting the battery!

I have installed the new firmware and G-Tool 2.9 and it works well, as described you loose the compass (I do not use it anyway) and when you press the compass button a placemark is recorded in your route.

I will use this special version and see if it is of use to me.

Thanks to Wintec for improving this GPS over the time, I am impressed with this level of support.

Another newer version of G-Tool (probably not official):
BEWARE, I have NOT tested this release yet!!!
I will give it a try as I do not use compass at all.

Version 2.9~~NEW
1. WBT-100 firmware upgrade
2. NEW Push log feature (compass feature will disable at the same time)

Extracted from the Readme file:

6. How to do push log feature.
6.1. Short click compass key on the WBT-100, the GPS LED will grows on GREEN, and turn off after about 1 sec. later. That means mark a special point.
6.2. Long push and hold the compass key on the WBT-100, the GPS LED will grows on GREEN, please hold push until the green LED turn off. That means creat a new trajectory.

I am having the same problem someone else reported in windows vista where the track downloads but never shows up in the track window. Is there a way to fix this please? It's urgent!

Thanks very much!

I have the same problem after a new installation on a WindowsVista.
The track do not shows in the G-Tool Window, but the files are read in the explorer. But it is still not possible to make a transformation of the *.trk to GE or Ozi. The latest G-tool software is only for XP not for Vista!!!
peterfier Posted - 09 mai 2007 : 07:08:31
I think I saw someone else mention this, but nothing recently. For the last several versions of the G-Tool app (desktop), it says it's loading the track and spends a while doing, but then when it completes the track never shows up in the track list box. Please oh please someone explain to me how to fix this. Just installed the latest version on a new computer and it's doing the same thing. Help!!

I have had my WBT-100 for about 4 months now and it has gone great. I mainly use it for photo tagging using WWMX. I just stumbled across this the other day, a early firmware that logs 50,000 points. I have been using R40 since I got my GPS and it tops out at 22,000 so it is a massive increase.
I installed the firmware last night and am leaving the gps logging for a couple days to see if it really works. This will be handy as I am off to Africa for a month in about 6 weeks and will not have a PC to download the points over that time. A quick calc works out that I can log tracks every 25 seconds and will only just fill the log in 1 month.

Secondly has anyone tried a BL-4C battery as a replacement? Im thinking of purchasing one.

Midtoad, You didn't read all current topic carefully, it has beed discussed. The attitude information are included into WBT devices from almost one year. It is true, some really first test with WBT-100 provides information the attitude (elevation) in not stored. But it has been updated time ago. it is one of advantage on this devices - manufacturer provides firmware updates regularly, adding new features and repairing bugs.
below link into picture with traces including attitude information (and speed).
Captured during airplane start in... hehe, you can easy find it using GPS data :D

Btw, GPS had a problem during start, I'm not sure, probably speed and attitude acceleration changes was too fast at the begin, GPS didn't recognize it corectly,
using 'speed' method.

jnarboux Posted - 13 avr. 2007 : 08:41:55
I am sure, you will get the elevation on the WBT-100/200. I had it once in a plane and got a nice google earth track showing elevation.
