Does anyone know if it is technically possible for Garmin to implement the security features (PIN number and location based) on the Nuvi 350. If it is, which is what I suspect, are there any plans to include it in a future firmware release, if not why not. |

FYI: If you "Lock" the nuvi's screen from the Adjustment screen, you are required to enter the PIN to reactivate it. I lock my screen occasionally (instead of powering it off) when I run errands and will need to enter the PIN since I am usually not at my "security location."

Just did another test and it looks like the security feature kicks in about 150ft from the "security location" when I'm getting around 20ft accuracy. |

Just did a small test. I set the pin code and secuity location at my home. I then drove approximately 200ft, stopped, and turned the Nuvi on with the antenna up. I had to enter the pin code to access the Nuvi. At the time I was only getting about 10 meters (30Ft) accuracy.
If it ever stops raining here I'll take a walk and see if I can get a more accurate measurement of the tolerance.

The "location lock" is a pretty neat feature, wonder what tolerance there is, GPS being accurate to about 10 meters, hopefully 50 meters ;-)

There are two ways to unlock the nuvi if the PIN security is turned on. You can ALWAYS enter the PIN or allow the nuvi to unlock itself via the GPS. If you are not in the exact location where you created the PIN, you will always need the PIN to unlock the nuvi. If you turn on the nuvi in the exact location where the PIN was created and have the GPS activated (antenna up), it will unlock itself based on the stored coordinates. This is both a convenience to the owners and a way to access the nuvi if you forget your PIN. It is expected that you change the PIN once you regain access to the nuvi. It is unlikely a lost or stolen nuvi will be accessed in your house (recommended location when setting PIN), so the nuvi cannot be unlocked via the GPS.

Great security! As long as its turned on with the antenna up within some unknown distance from , in this case, my house there is no security at all. Glad I trust the guy that lives next door. |

I discovered that when it asks for the pin if I flip up the antenna briefly then it starts up without the pin. I think thats because the last location before I turned it off was my security locastion. ie it didn't need to find the satellites to bypass the pin. So I guess the PIN could be defeated if you take your Nuvi away from your security location without using it. You have to re-enter the pin to change the security settings so it will only work until it was used and power cycled again.

Thats' exactly how it is supposed to work. With GPS off but nuvi on, it can't know whether it's at the "special" location, so you get asked for a code. Everywhere else on the planet (hmm, I wonder how precise it has to be -- 500 feet away, 1000??), it should ask for a code with the antenna up or down.

Interesting, I just setup the pin code for my Nuvi. Now if I turn the unit on without the antenna up it will ask be for my Pin Code. If I turn it on with the antenna up it simply turns on to the Agree screen like it always did. The Pin Code setup process says you should be asked for the code everytime you turn the Nuvi on.
I am at the "security location" I set as part of the pin code setup for both the antenna up and antenna down startup tests so maybe that has something to do with the inconsistent behavior. But if it is a security feature one would think it should work all the time. |

To turn the feature off select the feature again in settings. The Nuvi will request that the antenna be up. You then get presented with four options.
Off
On
Change PIN
Change security location
Select one and re-enter your pin.
Just turned my securiy feature off and I didn't need to be at the security location to do it.

Dan, I don't know that it's a deterrent either. A thief sees a Nuvi sitting in a car and he takes it. It's that simple. Of course, having it locked may protect your vital information, right? How deep does this lock go? Can they hard-reset the lock away? Can they still access the file structure via USB? Could they wipe and reload?

Don't know if it can be undone because I bailed for that very reason -- I do not want the hassle of entering a code each time and am not convinced it offers a meaningful theft deterrent.

Dan, once you have set the code is there then an option to eliminate it? Just wondered in case I really don't like the feature once I have the pin code setup. |

Just figured out why the antenna has to be up.
If you try to set up an unlock code, the nuvi demands that you also enter a location at which the nuvi can be unlocked without it, in case you forget the code. To do that, it has to have a clear view of the sky and have a full satellite lock. Very clever.
