Posted - 03 avr. 2006 : 11:01:38 As there are a few of us that have had this problem I thought I'd start a new thread that's easy to find and on topic instead of the problem being buried here:
nuvi 350 Ver. 3.10 as of March 7, 2006
To summarise:
The Nuvi displays 'System software missing' and no longer appears as a drive in My Computer after attempting a firmware update.
This situation occurs after an update and as far as I know only when using the Garmin updater. ???
It's possible that even though the updater says its finsihed it may in fact still be updating and disconnection of the Nuvi at this point causes corruption of the Nuvi software. This is just an untested theory at this point.
There have been a few suggestions for fixes in the above thread but none woked for me. Garmn have been contacted but the only suggested fix was to return the unit to Garmin. You'll need an RMA number if you choose to do this. So far the only other solution I found to this problem is to get a replacement from the shop were I bought the Nuvi from. I do now have a replacement unit myself but I would still like a fix just in case the problem happens again and I no longer have a helpful shop. I'm holding off on the next update until I have a recovery procedure.
minimedk has posted that he has a solution but so far has not responded to requests for more details:

I just tried to update to 3.1 using the latest updater and now I get 'system software missing' when turning the Nuvi on and no response. The Nuvi drives don't show in windows explorer either. I tried a reset and still no joy.
Any ideas how to fix this???

Just wanted to let you guys know, that I have a solution for this now. Its a piece of software, which will connect to your Garmin Nüvi 300 or 350, even though you can not see it as a drive in windows. It flashes the nüvi to 2.90, an then you are up and running again, and can update further to the latest firmware.
Please contact me if it is still an issue for some of you, and you dont have time for garmin to repair it.
//René
I think that's it so far.
To keep things together please post here if you any comments or information regarding the 'System software missing' problem.

Posted - 30 janv. 2010 : 19:38:16 greetings,
I have a US version garmin 260w and apparently i've bricked the thing by updating it using the webupdater... It was downloading the latest hardware, installing it and then it just froze up... The device rebooted itself and all i get now is the "system software missing" message. The device is not in US now thus i'm unable to get it to garmin USA for a fix. Would be grateful if anyone here can help me fix it up.
I've tried fixing it using the .rgn file from http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=95274 using the HWID 0834 file. I'm unable to get the hwid using g7towin... all i get from g7towin is the following nuvi 2 series software version 6.10 ID:1091 unit id: 3676400549; usb comm via bulk pipe
i've tried the 0660 and 0760 files and it won't update.. as for the 0834 file (083401000410cure.rgn) is able to start the update process but somehow the garmin device just disconnects itself from the usb and i get an error message from updater.exe. The garmin device shows the "loader loading..." message with the garmin brand logo... It is stuck there i have to reset it (hold the power button to the left for a few seconds to restart it).
Please help me figure a way to fix the problem as the device is pretty much an everyday tool for me to travel around for work... |

Posted - 11 juil. 2009 : 21:00:13 Never mind. After the upgrade, for some reason, the map info had no check mark. I clicked on it and everything seems to be back to normal. |

Posted - 11 juil. 2009 : 18:51:12 Hi everyone! I have a Nuvi 350 that has not worked since 6/30, when I updated from the Garmin site. When I attempt to use it, I can get the Address menu to open up, but then when I try and put in a state (Spell State), it goes straight to Select State No Matches Found. Then, when I hit Back, it takes me to the alphabet, but once I put in one letter, it goes back to the No matches found. On My locations, the information is still there, but the maps are all distant maps, not close enough to figure out what they are! All of the sections (lodging, fuel, parking, etc) have no matches! I have attempted to reset the unit, but I get Pre Boot Mode, Booting, Loader, Loading Software, then the screen goes black and goes back to Pre Booting Mode! Is this a brick, or is there hope? D |

Thanks to neadrenalin for firmware for 250w+tracklog. Work perfect but i have still problem with update. |

Posted - 10 juin 2009 : 03:36:55 Welcome to our forum sashusmom. One question, the map update will only work on a single unit, so did you ever get the maps updated on any of your units? |

Posted - 10 juin 2009 : 02:23:57 Hi ;) I'm new to this forum. I have 4 garmins--one for my phones,(nuvis) one 250, one 255 (which we got thru credit card points) and one 760 (this is mine). I have 3 other drivers in this house and it is handy to have several to grab and go for whoever needs one. the 250 works just as good as the 760. We bought a $10.00 update disc for the 2009 maps and it was promptly lost. About 4 months ago. I just found it last nite.
I gathered all my units and proceded to start to update them one by one. The 1st one I grabbed was the 255. I connected it to the laptop, let the disc do its thing, and it froze at the bootloader. I disconnected it, and couldn't turn it off, so I let the battery run out. I picked up the 250, let the disc do its thing, put in the code, and it was done. Simple. I went to the 760, this is the one the update was purchased for, connected it, and when it was time to put in the code, i did and was told this code was being used by another unit. Duh....I didn't know they were locked to specific units. Thought once you purchased their software, you can use it as needed. Wrong...
So. No update for 760. I put on the 255(the 1st one I attempted) and this is what it said. MISSING SOFTWARE !!! So I basically wiped it out. Then I did my research- and was instructed to back up your software before you mess with it. A little late. I called Garmin and admitted my ignorance, and was passed on to a software expert. (I backed up the other 2) the expert computer shared with me and sent me 3 files. one was empty. one was the updater program and one was giberish(to me). But he couldn't get anything to load. I couldn't turn it off or get my laptop to recognize it. I would have to send it in to be fixed. But I didn't have a receipt( free with points) so no proof of purchase. I couldn't send it in. So I was determined. I found an old post by mazin from 2006 in the nuvi 350 forums. He had instructions posted. So I tried his. I kept hitting the off slide till it worked and it went off! Then I went to my device manager(I was surprised I could find it) and sort of felt my way along. I plugged in my usb and held the on button over(its a slide). And watched the device manager for a garmin pop up. It did. I let go of the button, and missing software was still displaying--no bootloader message, nothing much to go on. I think I clicked on the garmin in device manager and things started to happen fast. Something loaded, I followed instructions on the screen, went to my desktop, dropped the gibberish file into the updater program, and bam--where do you want to put this? thru com1? I said sure, but it told me there was no com 1. I looked again, and clicked the next faded out circle next to usb- garmin, and my garmin 255 restored!!!!! yeah!!!!
I was also able to fix the other updating problems, so we are good to go. The moral of this story is--know what you are doing before you do it. Back up all software. (this wouldn't have helped me) But now all three are backed up. If you brick your unit, Garmin can help, but the people who post here are more knowledgeable. Thanks to Mazin for his post. It helped me 3 years later. And thanks to all you techie knowing people for sharing your info with us normal folks who learn by doing, and not often enough to really know what we are doing! |

Posted - 11 mai 2009 : 07:53:21 Folks,
I got a 780 (HWID=0872) with the dreaded "SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING" syndrome after a botched firmware update. The unit originally had the 2.40 firmware which I unsuccessfully tried to update via the web updater.
So far I tried running various cures and updates including the "nuvi7xx missing software" one all of which gave me the "NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR PRODUCT". None worked except for the http://www.pouchx.com/customers/N710_N760_v2.40_kolo_ratunkowe.zip via the .bat file.
The firmware installed successfully; at least I got a pop-up text box stating this. However the unit would get perpetually stuck in the "LOADER LOADING" screen. If I unplug the USB cable from the unit it would remain in the "LOADER LOADING" state indefinitely. If I force it to power down by holding the slider switch to the left for a few seconds and subsequently restart the unit it would display the "SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING" message.
I edited the 075401000240en.rgn in hex so that in all 3 occurrences the "ugpdate.gcd" string were replaced with the "gupdate.gcd" string. This made no difference whatsoever.
After having done a lot of reading here and on the Garniak forum I am beginning to realise that I was trying to fit a square peg into a round hole by using the 0754 .rgn files on the 0872 piece of hardware. Am I screwed royally? |

Do i kiss the brick goodbye? |

Posted - 08 janv. 2009 : 17:56:33 And again, many, many thanks! The 10 seconds on the battery icon did the trick and I was able to upload the firmware. I get the impression you believe this is well known/shared knowledge but I am searching the internet for days already. |

Posted - 08 janv. 2009 : 17:39:56 SergZak, I will try to find 2.30, or older, but in a week, not faster.
efoppen, try to understand, that you are not the one who asked for help, answers were published many times. Please find my topics about service firmwares. How to use 'cure': 1. attach usb and mount as usb mass storage device your nuvi 2. rename (or delete) all .img maps, .gpx files, .gpi files from nuvi disk 3. detach usb and power on device again 4. on the main screen press 'battery' icon for 10 seconds until service menu appeared 5. attach usb and install drivers if necessary 6. run updater with original firmware

Many thanks! It is not a brick anymore! But - it is not yet working as I think I am only halfway.
I installed the system software from the folder 'cure'. Since then it at least starts. But it is unusable as it does not list any maps on the device.
So I assume I have to install the system software from the folder 'original'. But there it goes wrong. I can't get updater to install this software. It just does not recognise the unit.
A bit more guidance would be much appreciated! |

Thanks for the 7x5 cure. I see that it is firmware v2.50. Any chance that you could provide v2.30 (original unit firmware)? |
