It seems like the GPS puts you at about 40 feet away from where you actually are. and the accuracy on the screen shows as 14 feet....

Whats up with that ?

I missed so many close turns the other day driving in phili.

Non reflective maybe, visible in direct sunlight sounds too good to be true though as so far you either needed a non-touchscreen GPS or a 12 volt powered one, as seen here : http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/news.asp?id=425

The PC Magazine review of the new Garmin c550 mentions that it also has the nonreflective screen. Here's what they say:

"The most visible new feature of the c550 is the new antiglare screen, which uses the same technology as that found on the higher-priced 2700 series. It is nonreflective, has a wide viewing angle, and is visible even in bright sunlight. It represents a significant improvement over the reflective screen that we complained about on the c330."

It makes no sense for Garmin to have started installing shiny screens on the newest nüvi units. That's surely a step backwards.

Guys,

I am reading your threads regarging the shiny LCD screens on newest nuvi models... What is funny here, I have just received the new nuvi 360 model (with Bluetooth) and it has a matte screen...
Strange though ...

In 3.30, sync was steady around 30 to 40 seconds, unless I drive off before it syncs. If I do, then it can take 3 to 4 minutes

Downgraded to 2.20 using miminedk's trick, then went to 2.90, and I'll try again tomorrow

I wonder if it's really related to the OS version, or to the GPS software version
LilYoda Posted - 24 mai 2006 : 11:39:23
This morning
1) flipped the antenna open
2) put the Nuvi in its craddle in the car
3) powered it up
4) sync in less than a minute
5) drove off

To me that looks more normal. With 3.20, step 4 was taking over 2 minutes, and then eventually when I got bored of watching "Acquiring Satellites", I drove away.

I will keep on trying with this 3.30 version and will post a summary once I have more data
LilYoda Posted - 23 mai 2006 : 20:14:32
I have version 2.50 GPS software.

I have semi clear sky when I fire it up morning and evening. But before the upgrade I was getting a close to instant lock on the satellite.

I am trying out 3.30, we'll see if it fixes it. If not, fallback to 2.90, and if still no good, back to the store for a refund.

EDIT: tried a sync in my yard, clear sky, took about 30 seconds. Sounds correct.
Will try again tomorrow morning, since it's usually after a good night of sleep or a hard day's work that my Nuvi doesn't want to sync.

Well, for my unit, it wasn't *slow* acquisition. It was *no* acquisition from physically-cold start. It would only acquire after power cycling (on/off/on).

Do check the GPS SW version for 0.0. FW upgrade 3.20 was supposed to fix the GPS SW=0.0 problem. It didn't fix my unit when I upgraded. I am firmly convinced that it's hardware related.

Regarding acquisition times, most folks I've read have Acq times just slightly under 1 minute from cold start. Some have listed 4-5 minutes as their norm. If you move during Acq, it is going to take longer. You confuse the little Nuvi a bit. Also, do you have a clear sky view from your home startup location?

HOWEVER, as I noted somewhere on the forum, one day I left it in my hot windshield, turned off, for about 4-5 minutes. When I came out and turned it on, it went into the familiar failure (no sat acquisition, GPS SW=0.0). These occurrences lead me to believe that this is a problem with the boards/chips, i.e. hardware, for sure. Heat seems to be a factor. The HW fails and then the SW doesn't process properly.

I think you're onto something here.
I also have a Nuvi 300, upgraded to 3.20. The day after, I leave it in the car all day long (although in the glove box, not on the windshield), and when I fired it up in the evening to drive home, I started to have the "slow cold startup" syndrome. Took almost 5 minutes to sync up. I did try powerdown/up, and the rest button. I disabled WAAS/EGNOS also, no luck, I just had to wait it out.

It's almost unusable now, since every morning it takes too long to sync up, so I just drive off after a couple minutes of waiting, and it syncs to the satellites somewhere on the way.

I also noted the effect in the satellite signal page where the bars are all white, whereas they are filled in blue when I'm synced.

I will check tonight the GPS software version, to see if it displays 0.0

If I did indeed fry the GPS receiver by leaving it in the car for a day, I think I'm going to ask for a different model back at the store (I've had my Nuvi for 10 days only)... A GPS you can't leave in your car seems a bit useless to me :-(

However, I have a question for the ones that did show a 0.0 GPS software version. Is that fixed by a re-upgrade of the software? Does a fallback to 2.90 fix the issue? I can't find the correlation between a software upgrade and a fried hardware. Yet it seems that most of the posters that did have that slow cold start bug did also upgrade to 3.20.

Tried to update from 2.90 to 3.20 last night. My Nuvi then asked if I wanted to proceed to 3.20 from 2.90 and I said YES. Now my Nuvi will not load. I keep getting SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING. I've tried pressing the RESTART button on the back and nothing. Has anyone else run into the same problem? If so, how was it resolved....

Thanks...

I also had once a while (5% to 10% maybe) occurences to nuvi not acquiring sats at all (sat screen with just the 2 circles, but not even the sat pictos and numbers. Having to reset to start acquiring.
The car is sleeping in an underground garage, I do not think there is any temperature issue.
I have "downgraded" my FW to 2.60, I'll see if it still happens

Shawn,
Yeah, it sounds like my problem. When it was happening, the sat signal strength bars would stay empty (no color) as opposed to a properaly functioning unit that would show red and then green sat strength bars. Under failure, GPS SW=0.0 and it never did acquire.

Get back on the line with Garmin. I guess it's possible that an individual tech might not know about this problem, but it's happened enough that Garmin knows about it. Call back for a better tech or ask to speak to someone up the chain. BETTER YET, if you can, return it to where you purchased it and get a refund/new replacement. I don't believe that you will be able to fix this.

I did get a second unit. This one has worked great.

Some guys on the forum can leave their Nuvis in their windshields in the middle of Summer in the Sahara desert and have everything work fine. For my Nuvi, I can't let it sit in a Staples parking lot for 5 minutes on a 68 degree sunny day. Beyond this occurrence, so far it's working fine, and despite these obvious product problems, I do think the Nuvi is very, very cool.

ShawnG:

You may indeed have a defective unit, but in the meantime, you might try this. To eliminate the car (which i agree with you is not the problem, yet may be contributing to it), take your nuvi to several locations or let it sit for half a day between bootups and do all the startups outdoors in clear view of the birds.

If you still get one in five startups misbehaving, it's almost definitely time for a trip back to Garmin.

If not, then it is possible that a "failed" start in the car will not "recover" if you get out of the car because the satellite almanac (a downloaded chart of where the birds are) is already in trouble.

Put another way, when my old Garmin GPS III+ fails to get a good fix (after it's been off for weeks, for example), if I shut it off without letting it finish acquiring the almanac, it takes even longer the next attempt and sometimes requires use of the manual location method.

Hope this helps, but the fact that my nuvi has never had this trouble (other than slightly delayed acquisition if I drive off too soon after a cold start), leads me to fear that you need a warranty repair.

Ask to speek to a manager...

bobpenn Posted - 19 mai 2006 : 17:44:26
No, it is a hardware issue. To make sure, when it happens, go to the menu, system, about and see if there is a version number for the GPS hardware. If it says 0.00 then it's the hardware. If it says 2.40 or 2.50 then it is something else, perhaps the shielding in your car.

But the way you describe it, it sounds exactly what I had, which required a hardware tradeout. Refer them to this thread on the forums. It worked for me.
