Posted by robogps in another thread and moved here

have used Garmin Mobile for 2 days, and these are my impressions that I posted in another thread, not knowing one existed for this. I thought I'd share it here for those who are interested:

Yesterday I downloaded Garmin's new mobile system into my cell. https://mobile.garmin.com/
That was my first GPS experience and I'm wondering if anyone can compare my thoughts about it to the 2720:

1. When I first drive off to a selected destination, the Garmin mobile tells me to "Start going Northwest onto Main St." It doesn't instruct me to go left or right and expects me to be a human compass on the fly. A few times I guessed wrong and for instance, I made a left instead of a right and after I drove for while it tried to correct me. Is this the same with the 2720 and most GPS's? Is the first turn onto a road always instructed as go "Northeast", "southwest" etc.?

2. When it tells me to make a turn, as I'm going into the turn, the screen still says I'm 100-200 feet from it, but quickly adjusts after the turn. Same with the 2720?

3. I intentionally went off-route near my house, and I often had to travel over a mile, or make a turn before it recalculated. Then when it recalculates, it tries to get my back to the original route a few times before realizing that I'm too far off of the route and then will adjust to change the route. Is it this slow to correct and does it attempt a lot of times to take the original route on the 2720 as well?

4. As expected, the voice isn't very loud on the cell, and can't be heard unless the windows are up and radio is off. I have to use the earpiece to hear the directions well. I like to drive with the window open at least half way (even with the AC on) and the radio on. Will I be able to hear the voice instructions well on the 2720 if I do this?

5. There is no Brooklyn, Queens, S.I. etc. on the map. All addresses in these boros are labelled as "New York City." Also address in West Newton, Mass, is in "Newton" according to Garmin Mobile, and so on. If I didn't know the zip codes that showed up, I wouldn't know which to choose. VERY disappointing - these aren't little, unknown towns. Same problems in the 2720?

6. With the cell, I always have GPS signal outdoors and even indoors sometimes (while testing routes). I hope the 2720 has a strong signal as well.

Thanks, gpspassion, you answered my concerns nicely! :-) I'm excited about the 2720. I played around with it in Best Buy and it has a great screen plus a few options and prefs that I will enjoy fiddling around with.

To answer your question, I have the Sanyo MM-7400. Overall, I think it's a pretty good phone; I've had it a few months. Sorry about the placement/doubling up of my posts.

Yes best not to double-up, we'll use this thread.
Can you tell us which phone you are using ? Here are a few answers and others will likely pitch in.

1. Well on the 2720 or the TomTom GO you would see the trip drawn out on the screen on a fairly large map so that would normally help. The GPS doesn't have a compass either ;-)

2. Normally not, now, that could be due to CPU limitations on your phone

3. That could happen yes depending on the situation, CPU limitation might come into play too as the fact that it downloads maps from the server so it will not have full coverage of the area like the 2720

4. The speaker on the AC Plug of the 2610 is indeed pretty powerful, should be the same on the 2720, depends on your car and the speed !

6. Actually, no, the 2720 uses one the "old" Garmin chipset that can't really compete for indoor use with SiRF based receivers especially with the AGPS (assistance) you are getting over the network. On the open road it shouldn't be a problem, but in Manhattan an external antenna will be compulsory, they can be bought for $20 these days.
