CUSTOMIZING THE MEDION 150 * - TRANSONIC **
Brought to you by GpsPasSion and PocketGPSWorld

BEFORE - AFTER

How to turn the Medion PNA 150 into a full WindowsCE 4.2 terminal with the same functionalities as the shipping version(Navigation/mp3/settings), but with the option to install programs such as OziCE for all-terrain GPS or BetaPlayer to watch DivX movies - full list of compatible apps >>HERE<< (French Forums)

The method :
  1. Download the additional files required here: installation pack
  2. Connect the MDPNA150 to your PC via ActiveSync and click 'explore'

  3. Copy 'regedit.exe' from the .zip file and paste into \Windows\StartUp.

  4. Copy 'modified.reg' into the 'Medion' folder on the device

  5. Soft Reset your device using the stylus (unscrew the end of the stylus to reveal the reset pin!)

  6. When the PNA150 reboots it will automatically launch Regedit. Click 'File | Import' and then locate the 'Medion' folder in the files and folders selection list and double click to open. You will see the 'modified.reg' file we copied in Step 4, double-click to import

  7. Locate regedit.exe in \Windows\StartUp. Cut this file and paste into \Windows\Programs .Copy 'showtaskbar.exe' from the .zip file and paste into \Windows\StartUp

  8. Locate Setting.exe in the 'Medion' folder, right-click and select 'Create Shortcut'. Copy the 'Shortcut to Setting.exe' file that is created as a result and paste into \Windows\Desktop. Repeat this process for 'MNAVDECE.exe' also located in the 'Medion' folder and 'MP3Player.exe' located in \Windows

  9. Finally, reset your device once more with the stylus and it will boot to the WinCE desktop with shortcuts to the three applications you had before. If you hold your stylus at the bottom left of the screen on the thin grey bar the WinCE taskbar will appear and you will gain access to the standard WinCE apps.

Feel free to test it out and ask any questions. As this is a joint effort with www.PocketGPSWorld.com, you can ask questions in their forums too.

A few "must haves" :
MioTools - >HERE< - one tap access to the keyboard
BananaPC - >HERE< - multi-tasking

* - This method has been tested to be without risk, but is not supported by Medion, so a hard reset will likely be required if you need to call their support line for other issues with your device down the road

** - If you have a Transonic/Bluemedia, you can read this thread for some specific tweaks

Hi folks,

I have a JVC KV PX-70 and I cannot use it in Brazil, the place where I live, since there are no .psf available Brazilian maps.

If I decide to keep the PND, my hypothesis is that the only alternative I have is unlocking the toy. Am I right?

I saw many procedures in this thread; is any of them appropriate to my unit? The PND specs are:
GPS chipset: SiRF Star III
OS: WinCE 5.0
Application: GoPal
Map supplier: NAVTEQ
Map format: .psf

One additional info is that, as I have heard, this PND looks exactly the same as the Medion 4410.

Thanks in advance,
Leo

Hello,

Did 'lifeisfun' question get answered? He owned a marbella nav2510 as do i.. I found the navigation software was buggy at best.
I would like to update or change the software on that device. Is it possible for this GPS to run Tom Tom's software? If so how would i go about installing it or if not than how can i re-install my Marbella software.

Thankyou for your time.

Calibrated.

markie76 Posted - 30 mars 2008 : 23:16:27
There is no point in doing this if your unit doesn't have a backup battery inside as it just resets and you have to do the process all over again.

I have a Transonic PNA3002 (PNA150 Medion clone).

Each time the battery goes flat it resets and reloads the software it came with (MN4).

I have looked into the unit and there is no memory battery.
However what looks like the power connector on the main pcb is only using 2 of the pins. I reckon the others are to accomodate a battery.

Has anyone opened up their units and found a backup battery or modified their unit and installed a backup battery?

Thanks,

Mark.

Part of its design afair. If the battery runs flat you always have to start from afresh. I've had to reinstall TT5 many a time after leaving my 175 on standby for 3 weeks at a time and forgetting to charge it up.

But the big question, how did you get TT6 to install. When I run the installer off the DVD that works fine, but on my 175 I only get a very quick flash of the install window on its screen. At that stage I know the install has failed, but dont know why. I've had this happen with the 5.21 update too for TT5.

This is the way i customised the medion
DOWNLOAD THE FILES REQUIRED FROM THIS DISCUSSION GROUP
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23418

The procedure is virtually the same for the Medion 200 MD95900.

1 - Connect the Medion 200 MD95900 to your PC via ActiveSync and click 'explore'
2 - Copy via active sync the file showtaskbar.exe to the windows/start-up directory.
After copying the file do a soft reset. (Reset your device using the stylus (unscrew the end of the stylus to reveal the reset pin! and poke it in the hole on the top of the Medion).
3. Copy 'regedit.exe' from the .zip file and paste into \Windows\StartUp.
4. Copy 'modified.reg' into the 'Medion' folder on the device
5. Soft Reset your device using the stylus
6. When the Medion reboots it will automatically launch Regedit. Click 'File | Import' and then locate the 'Medion' folder in the files and folders selection list and double click to open. You will see the 'modified.reg' file we copied in Step 4, double-click to import.
7. Locate regedit.exe in \Windows\StartUp. Cut this file and paste into \Windows\Programs .
8. Locate Setting.exe in the 'Medion' folder, right-click and select 'Create Shortcut'. Copy the 'Shortcut to Setting.exe' file that is created as a result and paste into \Windows\Desktop. Repeat this process for 'MNAVDECE.exe' also located in the 'Medion' folder and 'MP3Player.exe' located in \Windows
locate 'showtaskbar.exe' in \Windows\Startup and Select “create shortcut” paste the shortcut to Showtaskbar.exe into \Windows\Desktop .
9. Finally, reset your device once more with the stylus and it will boot to the WinCE desktop with shortcuts to the 4 applications you had before. If you hold your stylus at the bottom left of the screen on the thin grey bar the WinCE taskbar will appear and you will gain access to the standard WinCE apps. If this does not work then double tap the shortcut to showtaskbar and the grey bar will appear.

Note = sometimes during soft reset the stylus calibration goes out of sync and it is difficult to access the correct programs – double click on the shortcut to settings and re-calibrate the stylus.

NOTE : DELETE GX.DLL FOR INSTALLING TOMTOM5

Hope this helps

Hi All,

I am runninning TomTom Nav 5 on a Medion MD PNA 175 and if you guys want to know how to make the little bars display how many sat's you are seeing/signal strength...install an app called GAPI, I found it by accident while looking for other software that will run on a Medion, found quite a bit of stuff and the app as mentioned, lost the link but google it and see what you find, after I installed this app everything worked properley in TomTom the sat bars turn blue now when it has a fix and the signal strength is displayed in the display bar, hope this is of use to you guys.

Hi There

Got me a Medion 150 today and would like to run Tomtom on it.

I take it I need v5, but WHICH version do I need? There seems to be so many different versions!!
noone2 Posted - 07 avr. 2007 : 12:06:41
As per my previous post regarding maps....ive found that the only version of the new maps that will work on tomtom5 is 660.1223. Ive tested this with various country maps and its working fine.

Now my question is this...is it possible to put tomtom version 6 on these units?

thanks

Or ratehr I remember how to do most of it but I need to know how to alter the distance from cameras/alerts that the medion use to alter you. Right now my medion is alerting me as I drive past a camera and I want it to alert me like 200 meters from the camera. I know this was discussed in on the now missing web page.

HOW TO INSTALL THE SPEED CAMERAS TO TOM TOM

Step 1. Download the POI file
Download the POI zip file. Save the file on your computer by selecting “save” when prompted. Save the file in a place where you can easily find it again for step 3 of the installation, e.g. on your Desktop or in My Documents. Unzip the contents.

Step 2. Connect your PocketPC to your PC
Shutdown TomTom Navigator (if it is still running).
Place your PocketPC in its cradle to connect your PocketPC to your PC. Ensure that Microsoft ActiveSync starts and that your PocketPC is "synchronized".

Step 3. Copy the POI files from your PC
Go to the directory on the local hard drive of your PC where you stored or downloaded the unzipped POI database files (.OV2 and optionally .BMP files). Select and copy the POI database files.
You must copy the (.OV2 and .BMP) files - do NOT copy the folders.

Step 4. Copy the POI files to your PocketPC
Ensure that your storage card is "unlocked".
Then go to the map folder on your PocketPC, for example the folder "Great_Britain_Plus-Map"; and "paste" the POI files into this folder.

The POI files are now successfully copied to this folder. You are ready to use your new POIs in TomTom Navigator 5.

Step 5. Display POIs in TomTom Navigator 5
Finally, to enable POIs in TomTom Navigator 5, start TomTom Navigator 5 and select the POIs in your POI categories:

Change Preferences | Manage (or Maintain) POI | Enable / Disable POI
Select POI

They now are displayed on your TomTom Navigator 5 screen in both 3D maps and 2D maps.
Even if you do not display POIs on screen, you can now "navigate to" your Poi’s, find POIs near your location, etc.

Step 6. Set up Proximity Alerts (optional)
Change Preferences | Manage (or Maintain) POI | Warn when near POI
Select each POI in turn,
Select the distance for warning
Select the warning sound
Uncheck the "Warn only if POI is on route" box
Repeat until all POIs are set up to warn.

NB. If you check the "Warn only if POI is on route" box, then you will not be warned of POIs that you approach if:
1. The POIs are slightly away from the road.
2. You have no destination and therefore no route planned.

so; on the back of your pna you will find a buton that says on - off
if you switch that button you will have a hard reset of your pna 150 (if you have this) don't switch that button, it will erase everything..

Yippee!! Thanks, thug! This did the trick and I now have TT5 working on my PNA 150 . ***giggling like a maniac here 'cos it works!!!***

BTW, I did eventually find the Medion installation disk again, but the program still wouldn't work - wouldn't recognise any maps - so I'm doubly pleased about TomTom 5

Hello All,
I have somehow managed to wipe out my Medion 150I get the following error message "Installation Files not found in SD/MMC card!" and no matter what I do I can not resolve.

I've tried the "quick Install" recomended on the Medion website
I've also tried going through the process at the start of this thread (16 pages ago) and get the dissapearing regedit thing - so I tried following the instructions on pg 13, but found I didn't have a mnavce.exe file, so I tried the MP3 thingy, but it wouldn't copy to desktop...........

Please if any1 can offer me anymore potential solutions, I would be very grateful, and if any1 can solve my Medion heartache - I'd be 1 happy bunny :-(

Hi everyone!
Someone can say me because, after compiling with evc4 with MFC statically linked, windows are too large to display on my PDA150 ? ( also some common control are not present in my form ).
Maybe I have to use some other dll's ( with MFC dynamic linked the WinCE error code is 193 .... ) ?

UKRadiojock:I can answer a few of your questions:

1) Windows Mobile is a later version of Windows CE. However, in most GPS PNA's only the "core components" are used, ie it is not the full op system.

2) TomTom software is generally considered to be the best on the market, although, to be fair, each nav software has its negative points.

3)Miotools allows easy access to the on screen keyboard

4) Banana is an app that allows you to easily switch between screens / applications without stopping/starting them.

5)Basically, the nav software is programmed to take you on the shortest practical route dependant on the criteria you set. I also come across this on many occasions.

6) They dont all have the same map data, no. There are only a few actual map providers, but each GPS company uses data from these and creates "bespoke" maps.

One final point, please dont double-post. I deleted your other post in the main thread, thanks.

I have a 175 think its next one up from 150 runs medion navigon 4.4 I`ve followed all instructions on here for the 150 and its worked great with the 175 and succesfully managed to get to the desktop of the windows CE thing.

6 questions here if anyone can help please.

1...Whats the difference between Windows CE and windows mobile. Which is the newer of the 2 and is software compatable.

2...How can I install tom tom software, what would the software I need be called and what advantages does it have over medion.

3...What is miotools and what does it do.

4...What is Banana??? and what does it do.

5...Why does my GPS take me down narrow country lanes as a fast route or a short route when I know quite well that another route is better, quicker or shorter.

6...Do all GPS systems use the same map data. If a street is missing off the medion does it mean the same on the Tomtom. I have lots of errors where I live.

Hi Dav007

I am afraid the only way to close destinator and return to the desktop is by a soft reset. You should be able to go back to the menu from the task bar and open other programs and they will have a close facility within them. To my knowledge as Destinator was installed as the only programme on the BM6300 there is no software Close or End facility within it.

dav007 Posted - 11 juil. 2006 : 13:08:24
thanks thug for your help

and thanks sol for your help to 1 ? for you sol how do close Destinator when you have done using it to go back to the desktop
Sol Puerto Posted - 09 juil. 2006 : 18:50:47
Hi Dave007

If you have Destinator open and cannot see the grey line at the bottom of the screen do a soft reset. This will take you back to the "Windows" screen with the icons. If you can now see the task bar select "Start" then "Settings" then "Taskbar and Start Menu". Tick "Always on top" and "Auto Hide" then "OK". If you do not tick "Auto Hide" the task bar should remain on top all the time.

This should then display the grey line when you have Destinator open and clicking on it should bring back the full taskbar.

This works OK on my BM6300.
Best of luck.

Copy "showtaskbar.exe" from the .zip file and paste into \Windows\Startup
This should then show the grey bar minimised at the bottom - click on it with the stylus and it should appear with the windows icon on the right hand side - tap this and it will show something like the start bar on windows with icons of the programs installed.
I thought you were using tom-tom on your blue media so dont really know about the destinator program !!

It seems to be installing ok without error messages (I can confirm that if I look in settings/control panel/remove programs that the programs exist) but there seems to be no way to start the application. Fortunately I printed out the instructions at the time and I have typed them below.

Hi,

Am wanting to customize my Medion GPS again after re-setting to factory default and have found that the external site URLs for MioTools and BananaPC aren't working. Found the URL for MioTools so thought that visitors to the forum/this thread would like to know this. Not found a working URL for BananaPC though.

The URL for MioTools has changed to:-

Ar trebui sa reinstalezi software-ul de pe CD.

you need to uninstall the other navigator software and delete the navigator folder where the preferences are stored (cant rememer the folder, think its in the flash drive)

it will work...

Dear Chambers,

i followed your advice and it looked great on screen, with Taskbar and all and MP3 Player in the programs list. However, as soon as I disconnected MS Active Synch and the USB cable with the PC,
the PNA screen turned black and the MD96900 would not start up anymore, not even with a Soft Reset.

Only a hard reset got it to work, but all my carefully inserted POI data on speedcams was lost and I had to reconfigure them all.

Now I'm hesitant to try your method again, although I surely wish to un-lock WindowsCE on the Navigator.

Any ideas on why this happened ?

Moor.

I found a easier way to to this.
You hve to take the MP3Player.exe ad rename it.
You will not be able to rename MP3Player.EXE while it
is on the Medion

Just copy MP3Player.exe to your desktop.
Then right click and remove read only.
Now copy it back to your Medion GPS to the same directory it was in.
It will ask to copy over the one that is there. Say yes.
Now you can rename it to anything you like.
I renamed it xMP3Player.exe
Next copy showtaskbar.exe to the same directory that MP3Player.exe is in.
Now rename showtaskbar.exe to MP3Player.exe.
Now move the shortcut link of MP3Player.exe you renamed.
Again I called it xMP3Player.exe
Now move this shortcut link to Windows\Programs
Rename the link to just plain MP3 Player
You will see Windows Explorer.lnk there.
You do not need to reset.

This way you keep how the original Medion GPS came.
The only differance is that now when you tap on MP3
Player you get the taskbar.
(If you just install the showtaskbar.exe the only time it shows is if you reset.)
That is when you exit the Navagator the showtaskbar is gone.
This way you do not need to use the modified.reg or RegEdit.exe or standard.reg.
Tap on the showtaskbar and go to programs and in the Menu you have your MP3 Player.
Now you can now add extra shortcut links to the program window just making shortcut links and putting them in the
Windows\Programs

PS I also have done this on the model MEDION 95720 (MDPNA 500T)

Have fun

Hi,

I have a Medion PNA 250. Thanks to the great info on this site I have managed to unlock it. I can now see the windows ce 4.2 desktop and explorer etc.

I have been trying to install tom tom 5.21 without success. It seems to be installing ok without error messages (I can confirm that if I look in settings/control panel/remove programs that the programs exist) but there seems to be no way to start the application. There is no shortcut to navigator on the desktop or on the start menu. I have also searched for an "exe" file that might launch tom tom, but to no avail.

I've tried several variations on cab files, dll's and install methods but after many days fruitless installs, reinstalls, soft resets, hard resets and much screaming, I've exhausted all my known options.

Has anyone successfully run tom tom on a medion pna250? If so, can you give me a clue, please?

I have a Medion MDPNA200, and was able to do the fix to unlock windows CE. My Medion has the Navigon 4.0 on it and I wanted to upgrade to 5.0, but I get the Error:

Cannot find 'MobileNavigator' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all liberaries are available.

Can anyone help me?
Or does anyone have any experience running 5.0 on this device or on Windows CE in general?

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Would a Medion memory card that has been already used on a Medion GPS work on another Medion GPS straigh away or are they locked onto the first GPS used?
Many thanks in advance, Stefan

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Have just bought a Bluemedia BM6300 from Evesham and am really pleased with the unit. However, I would like to install extra POI's into it. Evesham say this is impossible - I have heard from other people that it is. If anyone can help I would be most greatful. The Detinator ND software does not have a Favourite Importer unlike other systems which run Destinator.

Thanks

Hi, i'm sorry, I know that probably the answer would already have been posted, but 13 pages are quite long to read

Anyway I suppose the text I have quoted is ok also for 250t, right?

Thanks

"I had the same problem tweaking a PNA 260T (aldi november). Because of the disappearing of the regedit.exe during startup. I did the following:
tweaking a discribed for the PNA 150 but:
I didn't put the regeditlink in \startup but
I used activesync to browse to the medion folder. Then I renamed te mnavce.exe to mnavceBAK.exe and renamed regedit.exe to mnavce.exe
then a soft reset after which te three icons came up.
After clicking the navigator-icon, regedit is started the modified.reg is to be imported. After that you rename the files back."

Hello,

I have a problem: I have a medion 250t, I have put regedit.exe in the startup folder but when I reboot regedit opens and closes immediately, so I am not able to import the registry entries. Also if I open manually regedit.exe it closes automatically.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Mudfish. I have a MDPNA250 which I hacked. I saved the GX.DLL before it was overwritten. I can send as a mail attachment if you want. You can get it back by doing a hard reset but that would require the hack all over again. Don't know if the original DLL will screw the Hack you,ve done it it's worth having the original as a backup. Hope you get sorted

Could this be the video/screen cause.would the wrong gx.dll

Hi all, new to the site. Hacked my Medion MDPNA 220T bought from
Toys R Us of all places I am very pleased with the results.
I added a combined mp3 Video player called Core Pocket Media Player.

But then my freind offered to sell me his copy of Tom Tom navigator 5
(as he now gets one with his job) I took his offer. I had it loaded and working when I realised the voice files had not been installed properly.
I uninstalled it and I am now unable to reinstall.

It is on the Medion but has a gabbled video screen. When I tried to get back to restore the backup I get the message

Cannot copy aygshell.dll there has been a sharing voilation, source or destination file may be in use.

Could this be the problem as to why the screen is blured.

Your reples would be very much appreciated as I'm now pulling my hair out and I' down £120.00

On "their website", a full image ? I certainly wouldn't flash a Mio with a Medion ROM image, best way to make a paperweight, the 268 is quite easy to unlock anyway ?

I have the PNA 175, is there anyway to get POI's / Speed camera locations on it without using POI warner? As in something like Tom Tom, but i know that tom tom looks for a bluetooth gps device so that wont work.
Also, can you get the Navigator 5 program to store a location when you dont have the post code but you are at its current position on the gps.

Is there any chance to get copy of system and navigator files. I have tried with Medion, but my country is not listed for E-mail suppors, so I can not even speak.
Is there any hope?
