THE GPS AROUND THE WORLD "FILE"

On of the best hings about GPS is that it knows no borders, wherever you are on earth, you can rely on more than a third of the 28 satellites orbiting the earth. This new "GPS around the World" file will share GPS experiences outside of the classic North America/Western Europe areas as well as the World Map Database.

Kicking off the series are igurevich38's comprehensive dual Road Software / Off-Road Software articles about GPS Assisted Navigation in Israel. For road software he used the local version of Destinator 3 and his off-road software was OziExplorer.

We have Australia lined up and if you would like to join in the fun from your part of the world, drop a line here!

What model do you have?
If it is working on Android you can download the OSMAND app and the India map, will take a lot of time, but it is free, no costs.

P.S. Thought GPS devices were not allowed in China

It seems that MapMyIndia offers software and/or maps covering India, working on WinCE navigators. See also http://gpsinindia.com/index.php?n=Main.Maps

I doubt they exist and in any case you can't ask for copyrighted material to be sent to you.

Hi everybody,

I'm from Brazil, and new in this Forum.

Here GPS is allowed, but I would be careful using Garmin Nuvi with City Navigator Brazil v4 when not on major cities(Sào Paulo, Rio, etc), as its maps are not so accurate.
There's a brazilian project called "Tracksource" which produces maps for Brazil (Garmin only for now), free to be downloaded. When in Brazil, try those. site: http://www.tracksource.org.br/
These are accurate, and routeable for most cities.
Good luck when travelling to Brazil!

No TomTom maps of China AFAIK so it will be of limited use I'm afraid.

I have a question. I will be traveling back to china and I just bought a TomTom One. The basic one for Christmas. I was wondering if it will be compatible in China/Shanghai when I go back there? If not, what other possibilities do I have for getting one that works in both places? And special designs that do so? Thank you so much for your help! its will be a huge favor :)

Using GPS in Ukraine is not prohibited.

Detailed maps, easy of use, routing and everything you want is at the
gpsukraine.com

I have tested this software during this summer, 5000 km, totally satisfied, and would recommend it to everybody.

Ukraine is similar to Russia but I had absolutely no success tracking down any GPS maps or software. I heard of a company called Visicom but I couldn't find a vendor quickly in Kiev. It was also quite spendy from what I saw too. Supposedly it would provide routing. If you just need maps, Handmap is a choice for Ukraine. As a last resort you can try the terrible Garmin maps for the Soviet Union. I can personally attest to the fact that they are incredibly inaccurate at times. I was on the Crimean peninsula high on a mountain and my Garmin map said I should be floating somewhere in the Black Sea!

Most of these maps don't provide any sort of routing. This won't be a big help if you want to drive. However if you WANT to drive in Ukraine and Russian I suggest you get your head examined first. This not for the weak-hearted and you better understand Russian at least a little bit and carry lots of bribe money or items with you. I could write a book based on my travels in the former Soviet Union but it has always been interesting and a GPS definitely adds to the enjoyment.

Can anyone offer some advice? I am thinking about purchasing a GPS unit for my car here in the US. The Tom Tom 920T seems like a good choice. Here's my question: Can I purchase maps of Israel for that unit? Thank you in advance for your advice.

I'd be interested to read a post from someone who's used their GPS in Antarctica. From the maps of the GPS satellite orbits, they never travel further north or south than about 63 degrees latitude.

From this I am guessing that at the south pole you would be surrounded by a ring of satellites at low elevations and none would ever pass overhead.

I also guess that you would see fewer satellites at any one time, being at the extremes of their orbits.

Looking forward to learning more.

Nope, it sounds like you might be having some hardware problems, possibly at the antenna level if it loses the fix so easily.

Thanks for the info. I am currently traveling; I do not have access to a reliable PC as I would at home. I have "reset" and tried a number of things using the Crux_View software. I am getting a fix, best is about 4 satellites, but they are lost easily. I was wondering if there was anything I could do with Crux_View to increase the "power" etc to get a better lock on the satellites? As things stand this is not reliable enough to be sure I will return to my original point. Thanks for the help.
