I have, among my GPS units, an ancient Garmin eMap. The thing is working perfectly and I'd love to use it when out in the AZ desert. I would like to update the map, which is from the northeast and from 2001!

There is a memory "chip" inside the unit (in the battery compartment) of 128 MB size. I don't see any other way to upgrade the map. Any ideas as to where to find either an upgraded map or somehow download one into this device?

Thanks,

Rich

Good advice.

@RichCapeCod - what did you end up doing?

Have you looked here? https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=167&pID=107

Click on the compatible products tab and you will see a list of Garmin's maps. But I think you will find that free third party maps, like the ones at GPSFileDepot and OpenStreetMap also work. The problem will be getting them into the unit. You would need a serial cable (see the accessories tab at the link), then would need a USB to serial converter unless your computer has a serial port. Once you get it hooked up you can use Mapsource (Basecamp won't work with serial devices) to send maps - you will find tutorials for doing that here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/

See page 10 of the manual here for more info: http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/eMap_OwnersManual.pdf

However, unless you already have the cable(s), I would question where it's worth spending anything on a device this old which is worth very little in today's market. I suppose it could perform OK out in the desert, but it will probably struggle to maintain satellite lock under tree cover.
