Hello everyone,

I tried installing a new map onto my Garmin Nuvi 1490 with basecamp just to realize that it overwrote all of the maps I had on the device.

Is there a way to recover those maps that where overwritten?

Thanks in adavance,

GranTotem

Maybe it's different in the States.
Where I come from we deliver the Nuvi with gmapsupp.img, not gmapprom.img
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Irrecoverably overwriting the old map, yes, but overwritting the old gmapsupp.img. It should not have overwritten the MAIN MAP FILE gmapprom.img. So the OP should have the original preinstalled maps on his GPS and that's why I think folks are asking if the main map file has been unchecked.

On most of the newer Nuvi's this is what happens.
Basecamp does not install the map, Basecamp will call Mapinstall.
Mapinstall will write the Map to the Nuvi as gmapsupp.img irrecoverably overwriting the old Map.

Did the main map just get unchecked?

Basecamp should never over write the pre-installed map that came with your Nuvi. It's possible that it might over write a supplemental map that you installed however. If you have registered your unit with Garmin then you should be able to download the original map again for a period of 12 months.

@GranTotem:

Have you looked at the files in your nuvi to be sure the map is gone? Have you checked Map Info to see what maps are listed and checked?

Depending on how you used BaseCamp to add a map (can you supply exact details?), the original may not be overwritten.

No! There is no way to recover a confirmed overwritten Map.
When you download a new map to a Nuvi it overwrites the Gmapsupp.img in the Nuvi.
When learning and experimenting with Maps it is always better to use an empty memory card.
There Should be a Warning something like "You are about to Overwrite your Pre-installed Map.
Register your Nuvi with Garmin and check on My Dashboard if you are entitled to download your Map.
Otherwise contact Garmin in your region, They might have a solution for you.
I take it that you don't have a backup of your nuvi.(including /.System)
If you do then it's possible to recover from the backup.
