UPDATED 20071125 : New topics : The NAVIGON Index - Customizing the 2100

UPDATED 20071123 - Feedback from Supremo after unboxing his BF 2100 purchased at Staples this morning :

My $0.02 - I picked up the 2100 at the Staples Black Friday sale this morning ($99 + tax), included is a scratch-off card that allows you to activate the Free Lifetime traffic subscription. You get the product ID from the unit, scratch off the included card to get an activation code, go to the Navigon website and register your unit, then to the Activation website and (1) enter your product ID, (2) enter the unlock code on the back of the scratch off card. A new code is generated, enter it into the 2100 on the appropriate screen, and traffic info is now activated. Traffic data is supplied by Total Traffic Network, website advertises 68 major metropolitan areas currently supported. "Service is available for the life of the product as long as coverage exists".

Once activated, a "traffic" icon appears. Tapping it gives you a list of local areas where there may be "issues" (heavy traffic, road work, etc.) Not clear (yet) if this info is linked to the map display to warn you (there were no traffic issues in my immediate locale where I briefly tested it).

In addition to the Traffic service, a Zagat POI service is also available for $40 US. See the Navigon website for details.

Package from Staples included window suction mount, dashboard stick-on plate, CLA adapter, TMC activation card, Quick Start guide.

First (very preliminary) impressions-

(1) Screen is somewhat crowded (but usable)if you activate all the display features (speed, ETA, distance, etc.).
(2) Voice is somewhat tinny but easy audible above road noise
(3) SD card (2 Gbyte) appears to contain almost everything of interest, i.e
- 1 large .map file (1.42 Gbyte) in root with 48 CONUS states (no Alaska or Hawaii). Map file creation date is August 2007, but that could be simply the date it was loaded onto the SD card.

Note: While there is no Canada map included on the SD card, on the bottom of the unit is (stamped into the housing) "Canada 310"...

- MN6 folder with subfolders for languages, user settings, sound (looks like 3 TTS options), etc.
- POI folder (12.8 Mbyte)

I could not immediately identify a "skin" file.

I did not try various power/reset combos to see if I could get into the underlying operating system.

I only tried one route at one "setting", it seemed to be identical to my Mio's (C310x and C520).

UPDATED 20071117 : it seems the Navigon 2100, will be THE GPS deal of the 2007 Black Friday with :
- Powerful 7100 software (see dedicated topic)
- Activated Reality View option
- Activated Lifetime Traffic option

Prices so far : $150 at Radio Shack (see page 2) $99 at Staples - see this topic.

For those who have a Navigon 2100 and are looking for the Canada maps this is what I did:
Copy contents of original SD card to another SD Card 2GB.
Register at the Navigon site and register for a Navigon 2120 no serial or code is required. You will be automatically given a choice to download the 2120 update. Once downloaded put your SD card that has the copied files in your computer or card reader and run NAVIGON_2120_Updater_Version_1.2.exe You will get a message that there is not enought space in your SD Card just click on continue anyway and continue to replace files. Put SD card into your Navigon 2100 unit and press the reset button. YOu now have Canada, USA 48 States, Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.

That means it's detected by the software, a good start, when it receives actual data it becomes white.

not sure whether this is the right place to ask. How do you know whether Real Time Traffic is working? When I turn on the machine, I see the red circle with the exclaimation mark inside. Is it supposed to be green or some colors other than red?

Does anybody know how to change the special characters/symbols, to something more meaningful and/or USA specific? What I mean, is I'd like to use a single quote, such as Jim's house, and/or see special characters such as ,'"@#$%&*(), etc. Any helpful advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

For those want to get SDHC card, I got mine with 8GB class 6. You want class 6 for highest speed. Lower the class number, it will be slower the speed. I was afraid to go higher than 8GB since some os version will be different in order to support 16GB. Anyone tried 16GB SDHC card on navigon 2100, please report it. I have 8GB class 6 working in navigon 2100.

I've been using my 2100 MAX for a few weeks, and have been very happy with it. I also have a Garmin Streetpilot C550 and a TomTom One XLS - The user interface of the Navigon wins hands down, and it is much more responsive than the TomTom, but the Garmin has better routing. I've messed around with the XML files (see other threads) on the Navigon and have seen significant improvements, but it still needs a little work.

I've got a question for those of you that have had your Navigon's for a while... one of the features of my other units that is invaluable when I'm on family trips is the ability to search along my planned route for POI's. The scenario is a car-full of kids on the way to the beach, and they want to stop at every McDonalds they see... I like to be able to tell if there's going to be another one (or maybe even something better) within the next 30 miles. The Navigon will show me the next few POI's on my route, and it will search nearby (and I understand that the "nearby" range is changeable), but I can't see how to look 15 or 30 miles down the road.

Any ideas?

Thanks-
\Brad

I just picked up mine from woot.com for $89 plus $5 S & H, and mine picks up signal pretty fast, inside of my house, work, no problem at all, its better than my Navman.
Mount was pretty bad, it didn't stick at all.

hey everyone, I've got a question for anyone. If I get the lifetime traffic and unlock my unit and screw something up that requires a hard reset, will the traffic still work or will I need to buy a new card?

To Sharkonwheels (Or any other person who can answer my question)!

Hi m8 I am from Canada and I own a Navigon 2120. I have transformed it to my need but I miss some space on my SD card! I saw on this forum (P9) that you have used a 4G SDHC card formated in Fat and that it was working ok.

I have a question for you because I am planning on doing the same thing.

Did your Navigon 2100 can see all the space available on the SDHC card?

And Did it stay "Happy as a clam" again today in 2008?

Please answer me as quick as you can...

Same here, looking for reviews and other info on the 2100 maxx. I just placed an order through Costco.com.

I might be posting this in the wrong forum but I got a navigon 2100 maxx and was wondering if there is anyway to backup the *.map files to my PC from the SD card. What is the location of those *.map files ?

You probably got a bad unit. I can get GPS signals in my house and other buildings, even in my basement.

AND this has no earphone jack!! my mio220 has one.

question: is the SD card already put in the SD card slot of navigon when u open the box? i thought they forgot to give me the SD card and was surprised it is already in the SD slot.
mio did not put the SD card slot in the unit when i receive it. it was out in an SD case.

update: i tried the gps at home. it is not getting gps signal. mio220 has no prob getting signal ANYWHERE. NO STORE AND HOTEL POI CATEGORY?!! i wanna look up the nearest staples store in my area and there is no way to look it up!!! what kind of GPS is this?

Actually it's a very good GPSr, However looking at your Handle it doesn't surprise me that you don't like it. I can't think of a better place to ship the SD card then in the GPS it's self. It's possible you got a bad unit out of the box, do-do occurs. just take it back and try another.
