CUSTOMISING THE Packard Bell GPS 400

BEFORE- AFTER- MATRIX

Having followed the instructions on this page (PERSONNALISER LE Packard Bell GPS 400) - I wrote an English version, hope this helps if you are having probs

1. Download the zip pack

2. Unzip the pack to where ever you can find it

3. locate the files cust400.cab,photoviewer.exe

4. Setup up a active sync partenership with your GPS400 click explore

5. Double click the applications folder, double click the photoview folder

6. Copy cust400.cab AND photoviewer.exe to the photoview folder on the GPS400, it will ask if you want to overwrite photoview.exe Answer YES

7. When finished this reset the GPS400 (you will need a paper clip or something suitable DO NOT MOVE THE SLIDER SWITCH OR ALL WILL BE LOST use the the hole below it to reset)

8. After the reset click on photo viewer icon (far right icon)then click the ok a few times and thats it

Have fun. Any probs or if you think you have messed it up just do a hard reset (the slider switch) all will be back to normal.

all the best from Geordie

Hi,
I have a Packard Bell Compasseo 620 with european maps. Actually, I do not know much about GPS.
I'm soon travelling to south Morocco where I will be driving a car, so I just was wondering if I can possibly install any maps for Morocco in my GPS and how to install them, which software do I need, where to find it and where to find the maps. I guess too many questions but who knows, you are so many talented people out there.
Thanks so much!!

There is no SD Card inserted or the Unit cannot read the SD Card (ie Card faulty)

Hope this helps

Hi guys, about amonth ago i enabled Win Ce on the gps400, its been working fine, then yesterday a friend was using it and couldnt get a gps lock (I was running TT5) so he took the SD card out while the unit was still onNow the unit boots up back as a Packark Bell witht he 3 icons plus configeration underneath them, the icons are 'greyed out' and wont respond even with a hard reset(moving the slide switch) i can conect with activesync and have copied the cust400.cab and Photoviewer.exe back to the unit and done a soft reset but as the icons are greyed out cant get any further, the configuration button is in colour and works, on soft reset the align screen is ok and you can adjust all the settings, any ideas please.

Hey Guys,

Does anyone know if it is possible to prevent Dshell from loading at startup.
I would like it to boot into WinCE without the Dshell running.

Thanks,

I have noticed a couple of things though..
1: Loading up the DShell resets all the init registry entries to factory so Soft resetting the unit blocks you from running Windows CE. It seems the firmware developers are on to us unlocking the unit. - Beware of that!
As a work around edit the Dshell.ini run section to this:

[Run]

HardButtonDriver=\DestinatorApps\DShell\HardButtonDriver.exe
Explorer=\Windows\Explorer.exe
;Destinator=\DestinatorApps\Destinator\Destinator.exe

This works as the DShell itself is calling WindowsCE instead of the registry. Granted DShell is runing on the taskbar, but just tap where it is on the taskbar to minimise it.

I did the above to the file inside destinator Apps (IIRC) and also with the file inside the Windows folder and then I can soft reset (with the paper clip) and it will always go back to the CE desktop.

Maybe the above will help you...?

thanks, seems it's go:)

Hey - you are in luck! It is a Pocket PC!
Download ActiveSync from Microsoft and then connect your GPS400 - bingo!
Alternatively - get the SD card out of the slot and pop it in a reader - I prefer this for most purposes..

Usually, the standard "shell" auto-runs - so you will see the standard GPS400 buttons, not the WinCE desktop.
My suggestion is for you to make a button on the GPS400 front page, next to the buttons for Navigation, MP3 player and Picture viewer, which will run other WinCE applications - Explorer, BananaPC, TomTom, or anything else you want to run.

Win CE runs, but if I reset (not totally reset, the normal reset) a lot of times,it comes back to original version....why????
PsiDOC Posted - 14 juin 2006 : 21:25:19
Kenwood mate,
Actually the custom install does have a few things in it like dll files that do help out a bit particularly 3rd party apps so I wouldn't discard it just yet.
I usually load it - all be it a personally customised version (a custom version of the custom install.... hmmm lol) as the 1st thing I do after a hard reset.

Packard Bell GPS 400 running with TomTom 5 / OziExplorer and Destinator ND 5.5 - Best £160 I have ever spent.
PsiDOC Posted - 31 mai 2006 : 20:47:44
Moon,
Yes that does work, however for some apps it's not stable due to the fact that it's missing a few important windows files eg: agyshell.dll. I know this because I ran mine using the same principle for a few days. Just as a test put the aygshell.dll file in the \windows folder, soft reset the unit then try to delete it.... You can't because windows CE uses it if it can find it.

You can also edit the dshell.ini file
from: destinator=\destinatorapps\destinator.exe
to: explorer=\windows\explorer.exe

This has the same effect, and same instabilities due to missinf files but you also get all the extra buttons on the PB working as well.

Psi

Is is much easier that described above. Why should we install the whole CAB file? Just use 'Windows CE Remote Registry Editor' (standard with the ms embedded visual studio setup, but also seperate available I think), connect to the device and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init

Replace the Value of Key 'Launch90' with 'WisGPS.exe' to value 'explorer.exe'

Reset the device and you are in windows. The cab file is installing some software, but you don't need it.

If you want to startup the GPS 400 application immediatly after a startup just replace the same key back to 'WisGPS.exe'. And now the device is acting like it was before.

A quick update - my website dedicated to all things GPS400 has been essentially finished. There is a feedback system (anyone can submit a blog entry - please use this for corrections, and updates you think worth adding to the site) and a file upload facility to send me copies of useful files, button graphics, modded freeware files known to work on the GPS400 and so on.
The site can be found at:

Hi andyconn34
Sorry - I don't know where you are going wrong. Did you look carefully through the schema.ini file for the places where you need to make changes?
I suggest you try something really simple first - like switching the functionality of the MP3 player and the picture viewer by swapping the command line on the appropriate buttons. Once you can start to see the results of such simple changes, you will have confidence in making larger changes that you know will work.
One thing occurs to me - did you soft reboot or hard reboot? Don't touch that sliding button!! Soft reboot with a paper clip pushed into the reset hole on the side and you should be OK. If you hard reboot with the sliding switch, all will be lost and the unit will return to factory settings as provided in the firmware.
Good luck!

With regard to the "caption rectangle" reference, play with the numbers, reboot, and see what happens :)

Hello

I have found this site....
http://tomtomsatnav.info/realvoice.html

....which enables you to download voice warnings for your camera POI's that you have installed in TomTom. To use them...

Download the Navigator PPC version that relates to the version of TomTom that you are using. Save the file to your PC and then using Active Sync copy the file over to \program files\Navigator\ and then
rename the original data.chk file to something like xxxdata.chk andthen rename one of three files that you have downloaded to that folder to data.chk. Startup TomTom and then select the type of warning sound that you wish to apply to your cameras - the sound is named the same but plays a voice relating to the type of camera and speed that applies to it.

The Warning sequences are...

Beep 1 = Gatso Camera 30mph
Beep 2 = Gatso Camera 40mph
Beep 3 = Gatso Camera 50mph
Beep 4 = Gatso Camera 60mph
Beep 5 = Gatso Camera 70mph

Bell 1 = Mobile Camera 30mph
Bell 2 = Mobile Camera 40mph
Bell 3 = Mobile Camera 50mph
Boing = Mobile Camera 60mph
Bugle = Mobile Camera 70mph

Polite 1 = Average Speed Camera
Polite 2 = Red Light Camera
Polite 3 = Temp Camera

Cuckoo = Mobile Camera
Cow = Gatso Camera

The following application is one that I have tried and it works very well and compliments the one above....

http://tomtomsatnav.info/poiw.html

Do you want more than 15 warning sounds for your pois ?.
Do you want to be able to change the text labels for these sounds ?.
Now you can, download the applications and follow the instructions.

By using the above application you can then rename all the default sound schems, like the bell, beeps etc to the ones that you wish to use, like the voice warning for the Camera POI's that I linked before. If you wish to do that you MUST use the ogg files for those voices from the very bottom of the page...

Ogg File Downloads.
Want to build your own data.chk files ?
These zip files contain all the voice prompts from the real voice warnings and some extras for the new variable Specs cameras

http://tomtomsatnav.info/poiw.html

colour scheme editor....

The following site has this....

Want to change the color of the maps of TomTom Navigator (v2, v3, v5 or Go )? Well, now you can. It is possible to edit the .clr files, because it is just a text file with RGB codes. But that would be a hell of job. So this is why we made a tool to make it very easy to change the color you want. You can edit a scheme to have it the same colors of your dashboard.

Happy editing

http://www.colorschemeeditor.com/index.php?p=home&lang=EN

The help file is here....

http://www.colorschemeeditor.com/help/EN/index.html

You can download many schemes already made for it by other people or create your own :)

Create Your own voices...

Another utility for those that wish to create their own voices for use in TomTom....
I have not tried it though.
http://tomtom.graemelucas.co.uk/step1.htm

I have not tried this application either....

Customise your TomTom menus...

http://www.tomtomsatnav.info/menus.html
Now thanks to ours friends on the forums you can change the order that items appear on the menus. Move the items you use more often to the first page or delete ones you never use, i.e delete tomtom weather, download extras.......... no use on the TTGO Classic.

Free pdf books

Here are a collection of free pdf books that can be used with the book reader that I posted about earlier in this thread.....

http://www.planetpdf.com/free_pdf_ebooks.asp

Calligrapher works, or seems to do for me although there are some problems getting it to diplay the config manager.....
CalliGrapher is an award winning natural handwriting recognition software that supports all handwriting styles - cursive, PRINT or MIXed. In addition to handwriting recognition, CalliGrapher offers PenCommander (an easy-to-use PC navigation tool), ink color selection and customizable ink width, and a "Quick Correct" window for fast correction as the user writes.

http://www.phatware.com/calligrapher/index.html#details

When you have installed it look inside the folder on your PC that it installs to when it has finished telling you that it will not install on the type of device that you are using (the PB400). Then just alter the file CgrPPC.arm.cab with WinCE CAB Manager so that the CPU type is for All /CEF then it installs. This works well with the notepad that I posted about in an earlier thread as I can now write with a stylus and it enters it in the notepad.

I have wasted enough time as it is with that situation.
Paul80 made a very rude comment to me offline and I called him on it via email. Instead of continuing by explaining himself in private, he took it upon himself to delete all his messages here, leaving the thread looking "odd" only making matters worse. There is no room for this type of behaviour here - Update : in light of this and of his insistance to spam these forums, I have had to ban him, sorry it had to come to this.
[/END OF OFF TOPIC]

I was planning on setting up the "PB400 Forums" tonight but this will no have to be postponed until tomorrow as well as the uploading of the v5.5 firmware upgrade. As I no longer have a PB400 to try it as I would normally do, anyone willing to give it a shot can drop me an email on gpspassion [@] gmail.com.

Thanks for the great tips - I am looking forward to having a reader on my GPS400 in particular.

Yes, I think the way to approach this would be to have links back and forth between here and the various sites when appropriate. If you link to your site for an article/tip you've written then link back here so people can discuss, no need to duplicate content or files unless required. Having said that I've got bandwidth to spare, so will be happy to host if need be.

I'l work on setting up these new forums today as soon as I hear back from Compufix who has been moderating the general forums. Will probably launch some TomTom forums at the same time. Thanks to Commsman and Paul80 who have offered to help ;-)

Thanks for getting back Paul80.

Not sure about latest Maps. On the Destinator website they have upgrades for Destinator 6. I cant get the english page to translate but looks like they're still on Q3 2005 but Q1 2006 should be shipping Mid May ( I think thats right )

I'll just have to try 1Gb on PB1.01 and see..

Would be good to have listing of working progs. Have been trying some when I have the chance.

Thanks. Dig the web sites.

Hi Paul80

Just wanted to check with you that its definitely possible to use maps for PN in the ND as stated in your site ( good stuff). I'm in Ireland and desperate for update Maps ( Ha Ha ). So I beleive if I buy latest Destinator PN Maps Q1 2006 I can just pop the Irish mapping in! That would be real cool if so.

All so in reference to my PB1.01 firmware - could that affect the SD card size as it states on my literature that 512Mb is the largest supported. Was my box just out of date? I was just about to buy bigger but thought I should ask first.

Thanks Again

Hi

I bought my PB just a couple of weeks ago. In system info it reads

Windows version : PB1.01
Can this be ungraded? It seems most are on PB1.02.

Have PCWorld done it again.

I watch all with interest

Good work guys, looks like the GP400 is getting more popular!
How about setting up it's own forum section here and I have the 5.5 firmware update handy to get it off to a good start. Anyone willing to "moderate" that forum?

Question: would it be useful if I was to create and host a small website providing the following:
  • button and panel background graphics
  • free and open source apps known to work on the GPS400 (including modded cab files where appropriate)
  • guides, tutorials and examples showing how to mod your GPS400

If done well and we get enough registered members (voluntary registration with occasional email to advise of major updates / site additions), maybe even PB might sit up and use the site for providing firmware upgrades (don't hold your breath there!), and Navteq might offer discounted updates (really - don't hold your breath!).

I have knocked up a quick example here:
http://gps400.accline.co.uk/

If there is sufficient interest, I would probably convert the site to using one of the portal cms packages such as PHPNuke (if you are not into web stuff, all this means is that it makes it easier to build a site with contributions and moderation by a community of enthusiasts).

Feedback on this proposal please.

PB state in their literature that up to 1GB cards work. I can confirm that a 2GB Kingmax card works in mine perfectly ( PB1.02 firmware)
On the subject of firmware, I see that some people are running V PB1.06, and yet PB told me in no uncertain terms that there was NO update above 1.02. The phrase " front end doesnt know what back end is doing" springs to mind.

I have just called at my local shop... www.aria.co.uk and paid just a little over £16 for a Kingston 1GB card :)

Can anyone help with somehow getting the icon back on the desktop that launches the Packard Bell front end - where the banana icon is, and others. I think it is called G400.exe and I can see the file is still there but the shortcut, somehow, is missing from the desktop...!!!!

EDIT: Found it - I navigated to \Windows\Desktop and placed the shortcuts there that I wanted to appear on the desktop and renamed them as well.

Does anyone know if a 1GB card would be ok to use in this unit....?

Commsman,
The flash drive is part of the internal memorythat is set aside as an extra disk. Apparently it's a unique feature to WinCE 4. From experience the only difference between simly creating a new folder and the flash drive is that the flash drive is not taken into account when adjusting the memory settings.
Sadly noting gets past a hard reset unless it is on the SD card I'm afraid.

Psidoc - what is the difference between the "normal" memory area inside the device and the Flash Drive? Are the contents of the Flash Drive retained after a hard reset by any chance?

I was thinking that perhaps the SD/MMC card could be used to run hold apps - if I get keen enough to have some really big additional apps installed, I would certainly use that location. I have an old steam powered HP Journada 540 which only has 16mb of internal memory - so you can imagine I am quite used to installing apps to the CF card on that device!

Nice one Commsman fairplay that's an excellent find.
I was woking on a second screen for loading TomTom, Destinator & Ozi from the Dshell, but I don't think I need to now that the original can be modded to add more buttons.

Respect Guys.

@ Vimes
You have plenty of space to load TomTom, Ozi Explorer and a fair few other applications as well before you run out of storage space. Also remember you can actually install them to the flash drive or SD card if you feel you are running out of space.

If you are like me, all this mucking around with the unit and soft resetting every 5 seconds is getting tedious. I have therefore a little gift for you - a modded soft reset utility - available here:
http://www.accline.co.uk/gps400/SoftReset.CAB

The original came as freeware from ShubhaSoft - so credit due to them for the main coding work.

I have made some really small button to run these tiddly tools - feel free to grab them here:

And, if you are really impatient like me, you can stop Destinator running on start-up each time you soft boot - this really speeds up the development process.
simply comment out the run command located in the DShell.ini file - this file is located in the \DestinatorApps\DShell folder.

it should then have a run section that looks like this:

[Run]

HardButtonDriver=\DestinatorApps\DShell\HardButtonDriver.exe
;Destinator=\DestinatorApps\Destinator\Destinator.exe

note the ; used to comment out the line. You could delete it, but commenting it out makes it easier to restore if and when you want to.

Oh - you could of course auto-run TomTom or OziExplorer if you wanted

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing the TT and Explorer icons - much appreciated :)

Has anyone else noted that if you use the new (with the banana icon etc) Packard Bell 'front end' that it is impossible to close it down to return to your desktop of Windows CE without it automatically starting again. Even using the banana icon to generate a close button will not prevent it from auto restarting, unless of course I am missing something....?

Now to play around with the schema file to sort out my icons :)

Yes - I had this problem! This was one of the reasons I had a BananaPC icon available - it allows you to cycle through available windows!

I have moved my BananaPC button to a less in your face place now in favour of an Explorer button, but I am convinced that this app has its uses - for times like this!

Will a soft reset sort it out? Failing that - install a tiddly button top right - here is a yello one for you - and link this to BananaPC. That should sort you out

Paul80 - thanks for the tip on the cab file - have deleted this as well now and as you say - memory savings and no downside.

On the subject of upgrading firmware, I have now had a response from PABS Direct who either do not know where to get a firmware upgrade or are currently not willing to play ball:
quote:
We do not have a upgrade link currently.

At least we tried! I know it should in theory be possible to extract the firmware from my EPROMS but that sort of thing is way over my head. If anyone knows of a set of tools to do this kind of thing and are prepared to buy me a replacement unit if it goes belly up then it just might be possible, but this seems like a really long shot.

Opening the case by the way is a doddle (my battery was rattling around a bit - cured with a little tab of sticky foam rubber - so that is not the problem.

Here are some TomTom buttons - hope you like them

These are - in order:

t_unsel.bmp t_sel.bmp t_pres.bmp t_dis.bmp

These buttons are designed to match the tools button on my device (same size and style) and if you look earlier in this thread at my example schema.ini, you can get the coordinates to line these buttons up with the other ones on the device.

If you really object to the colour, I will re-do them, but I thought the green would contrast nicely with the red of the TT logo

And here are som Explorer buttons:

Hello
Many thanks to the people in this thread who have made it possible to customise the PB400. I have just bought mine and with the excellent, clear and concise instructions I have been able to install TomTom 5 on my unit and it is fully working...

When I bought the unit I also bought a 512mb SD card which holds the TomTom map with room to spare. However how do I get to know how much room there is on the unit itself to install further applications or will all application install to the SD card...?

I am looking at this...
http://www.oziexplorer.com/
...as I have noticed a thread in this forum where someone has managed to install it. I am not sure if there would be room to install that application along with TT5 on the unit, or am I thinking about this all wrong...?

Thanks again for the posts here which helped me to get TT5 on my PB400, as well as the new icon files - I think I will try and do one for TomTom, unless someone already has, as my talents with graphics software is some what lacking..!!!!
Commsman Posted - 12 mai 2006 : 09:01:29
Paul80 - for the button graphics I use Fireworks - it is really a cinch to use layers and output buttons that have a variety of states (but like any sophisticated graphics editor, it has a learning curve). I could have used Photoshop or The Gimp or Serif PhotoPlus - all are capable of managing layers with aplomb.

Regarding BananaPC - It seems to be useful for window management - sometimes it is tricky to bring up the WinCE interface depending on the taskbar settings in use at the time (I am stil trying to get to grips with this actually). It could well be that BananaPC is redundant - Now I have had time to play for longer with the interface, running Explorer looks like the best way of bringing the task bar to the fron, from which I can show the desktop if I want to. This is work in progress for me.

Regarding 5.5 - I bought my GPS400 from eBay actualy from the eBay shop at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/PABS-Direct (I have no connection with these people).
It might be worth asking where he obtained his factory refurb units and working back to the place the firmware comes from. Tell you what - I will do this right now.

Cheers

Ok now we have the front panel sorted out, I need a bit of advice:

1. What applications can be made to run on this device (are there any dll files I need to add to the OS to allow some to work - I assume a lot have been stripped out of WinCE Net Core - otherwise it wouldn;t be called "Core" ;-)

2. I assume I need to tweak some of the installation cab files using WinCE CAB Manager as described by PsiDoc in his thread on installing TomTom? I assume if I obtain installation cabs designed for "StrongARM / Xscale" and then switch them to looking like "All / CEF" they should work ok. I did this (rather hopefully in retrospect!) for Adobe Reader for PocketPC and guess what - it did not work! Maybe if I toned down my ambitions I could get some less demanding apps to run - but I have no feel at this moment of the criteria for knowing whether a particular app will run or not. Anyone have some ideas?

As was mentioned by someone earlier in this thread, what we need is a list of apps which are known to work on this platform. At least it should be our joint aim to build up such a list!

Cheers!

I am pretty sure this would be possible. In principle you can use this technique to launch any exe file on the device. You simply put the correct path and application name in the an appropriate place in the schema.ini file. One thing I cannot check as I don't have TomTom is whether the hardware buttons would work (do you need these in TomTom??)

With TomTom, I do not know where the application executable file resides, but it should be a relatively simple matter to work this out.

Why don't you have a browse through the directories and check, then use this technique to temporarily re-program (say) the mp3 player button? Once you can show you can get one button working, try adding new ones as per my example schema.ini file.

Remember to soft reset each time you upload a new schema.ini file. The suck it and see.

Good luck!

Finally - I must say how dead chuffed I am to have acquired such an excellent and versatile bit of kit for such a ludicrously low price. I snapped it up after checking out the bargain basement and seeing the reports of unlocking the unit to WinCE and running TomTom. I really am amazed to see some people grumbling about it in other threads (although to be fair, 99.9% of the grumbles were about PB being complete dead heads as far as after sales support is concerned - how to win friends and influence people eh?). On top of it being a fast and accurate nav unit, I now have a pretty good multimedia device (the speed, stability, capability and quality of TCMP is realy impressive). My hat is off to the people behind all these variuous goodies which enable the greater flexibility of my GPS400.

p.s. - Compufix - do you work with PB or Navteq?? You sure seem to have a handle on the hardware/software involved in these devices. Regarding your comments about my Destinator version - I will check out the extra lines in the ini file to see if I can make any sense.

You are lucky! Most are loaded with the 1.02 OS. The 5.5 version of Destinator ND does indeed use these references. If you wish to play with them ,please do so, but ( teach a duck to suck eggs) do a full backup first!
I am, at present, getting the John Cleese Tomtom voice to work on this unit. When finished, ill post the "how to" with regard to altering the voice.

Thanks Compufix - as you could probably tell, I was blundering around trying different things to see what worked.
As you point out, I have left a load of entries in the ini file that are clearly redundant at the moment but thought it would be wise to leave them alone until I knew more.
Your point about version 5.5, are you referring to the firmware version? I appear to have OSPB1.05 - nowhere near 5.5. If you are referring to Destinator - I already have 5.5.0.85 - I am confused!

The Caption, Font and Colour references in that .ini file are partially redundant, for the moment! In future versions ( i.e. 5.5) they are fully used. Please dont delete them, even though the .exe file is told to "do nothing" by them, if they are not present, it will cause problems.
With regard to the "caption rectangle" reference, play with the numbers, reboot, and see what happens :)

UPDATED:
I now have a nicely modified interface for my GPS400 so TCMP and Banana can be run straight off the front screen.

The trick is to edit the schema.ini (located in the \DestinatorApps\DShell\Schema folder and to provide new icons for any new buttons in the same folder.

I made new icons for BananaPC and TCMP - see below.

Here is a link to my new schema.ini file with the two new buttons
http://www.jtcomms.co.uk/images/schema.ini.txt (save the file as schema.ini - I have added the txt extension for convenient viewing)

and here are the new icon files I created:

These images are shown in order:
v_sel.bmp v_pres.bmp v_unsel.bmp v_dis.bmp
b_sel.bmp b_pres.bmp b_unsel.bmp b_dis.bmp

Feel free to grab these images (right click and choose to save - or if you have Firefox or other better browser - just drag them off the page onto your desktop)

Of course you need to have unlocked the GPS400 to use this hack - and this is only a start. I have already made further improvements not shown here to run other useful tools - explorer, gsexplorer and showtaskbar being the main ones.

Cheers!

Still no joy trying to work out how to re-boot Banana (it is on my machine but has either stopped or is in the background) I know I could hard reset, but that gets tedious - what with adding the unlock hacks and re-installing all the faves etc - even if I do now have the folders mirrored on my PC).
I have had a look at the shema.ini in \DestinatorApps\DShell\Schema and this does seem to control the front panel interface and buttons, but adding an entry to this for another button to run Banana does not seem to work.
Anyone know if I am on the right track or am I barking up the wrong gum tree?

Here is the enrty in schema.ini I tried:

[WinCEBtn]
Rectangle=117,2,125,21 ;puts it at the top of the screen
Unselected=d_press.bmp ; a button that seemed handy
Selected=d_press.bmp
Pressed=d_press.bmp
Disabled=d_press.bmp
CaptionRectangle=116,3,120,15 ; der - dunno what this is
Caption=TxtDestinator ; probably redundant
Font=FontDestinator ; probably redundant
Color=0,0,0 ; probably redundant
Action=\Program Files\BananaPC\BananaPC.exe ; run that app!

1. agyshell.dll caused a problem for me the first time I unlocked my GPS440, but subsequently no problems. I think you need to do another soft reboot at some point in the process.
2. Secondly, unlike instructions I have read elsewhere on this forum, I do *not* need to unzip the cust400.cab file and copy the resulting cust400 *directory* on to my GPS400 - just the compressed cust400.cab is enough, along with the customised PhotoViewer app.
3. The process for unlocking is therefore:
- copy the two files to the PhotoViewer directory
- soft reboot
- run the PhotoViewer app and agree to over-write all and agree to the default locations for various things etc.
- soft reboot
- more activity
- another soft reboot - and this time everything is working.
So that is three soft re-boots in total.
Hope that is of some help.
Now I need to work out what it takes to customise the standard Start screen - as I keep losing the Banana PC buttons and WinCE toolbar and the only way to get them back at the moment is to hard reset everything! Doh

I must re read all through this as I might have missed something.
Destinator ND is working ( all the external buttons ) as you said PsiDoc but ... when in the menu and accessing the "middle" screen, like the MAP option it jumps to the main screen and then all the options freeze. I have to use Banana PC to escape and then reboot to get Destinator functional again.

I have Oziexplorer CE working well now. Very impressive and solves my off the beaten track problems with the Irish mapping ( until Q1 2006 Navteq maps arrive for ND !!) however I'm having problems connecting to Oziexplorer 3.5.4 trial version. The PB GPS400 shows the Connection but then.....nothing.
I presume that the PB is compatable with the PC version of Oziexplorer.

Not having the agyshell.dll shouldn't be an issue to above problems? I haven't found away to get it loaded up yet as I get a violation warning ( can't quite remember exact wording).

Your thoughts have been seriously helpful.

Thanks

Here's a shot of me offroading with OziExplorer running in my 4x4.

It tracked my progress regardless of how much tree cover there was, no false positions at all. I chose that route because of it's dense tree cover.
Walking, riding or driving OziExplorer is a brilliant tool. Unless I need TomTom's knowledge on how to get to an unknown destination I usually run OziExplorer in the truck whilst driving just to track my day on my home made OS map. Also added to the Packard Bell with the SirfStar 3 GPS chipset makes it just about the best you can get in my opinion.

Gavoidix,
Destinator ND needs to be launced via the G400 icon for the hardware buttons to become active if you have upgraded the software. This is because the Dshell.exe needs to load the Hardbuttons software patch.
If you load the Destinator from the desktop the buttons are not loaded and hence your problem.

No Zoom? My PB400 (Destinator ND) has auto-zoom on routing and a hardware slider (left of screen) for zooming maps. Is that what you mean?
To enable autozoom, go to settings/ map and tick the check-box by auto-zoom.

Just like other PB stuff, it will be a case of wait. The annoying thing is ND has TMC but only on PPC, why oh why was it not included on the 400?. ive copied all the files from mine using a/sync, and im studying them to see what I can do with it. The voices seem pretty easy to play with so far. It only runs on the 4.2 .net core, nothing special.

Now that I will be very interested to see, particularly the structure and the reflashing process. I have a gut feeling about the origins of this unit, but I need to have a look at the firmware and the other bits and bobs before shouting about it.

What do you mean by "latest" ? Latest available on the market ? Actually that's not true, Route 66 v7 ships with Q4'2005 maps. Destinator v6 is announced with Q1'2006 maps.

Ive just been given one of these as a birthday gift ( lucky me!) Does anyone know if there is a Destinator PN5.5 software update available, as its shipped on some devices? Mine only has 5.1.136 installed. I tried "googling" but to no avail. So far im impressded with it, it is certainly more accurate than the Mio. Also, what about updated maps? mine are Q4 2004 ( i think) are there later ones out?

Hi there,

I've tried this patch and it works great but still have some questions:

1) Is there a startapplication (like the packard bell) in which you can configure your own programs like tomtom, destinator, filmprogram, etc)
Update: I've altered the Packard Bell application it now has a TomTom button (incl. picture) and the banana pc application (it's use isn't that great.
I'm still trying to make a button that makes it possible to stop the dshell appl. so you can return to windows desktop.

2) If you start the menu-application from packard bell how can you stop this (without using the reset button).
3) Is there a way to reprogram the buttons on the outside of the packard bell?
4) Does anyone know if this device will support TMC?
5) I've automagically hidden my taskbar but can't get it back there is a shortcut on the desktop but clicking on it doesn't do anything
Regards,
Wingie, who is going to try out the tomtom patch

Canadian maps are available for the original Destinator ND that is bundled with the unit.
However you can get TomTom to work with this unit as well. Have a look at my thread here: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=52616

I can't see how this is possible Paul. The PB400 uses a Samsung S3C2410X02 processor @ 266 Mhz, just like the Acer range of PDA / GPS that happily run TT5.
Personally I'd be looking for a problem software wise IE: a .dll that doesn't quite work correctly.
Anyway I'll have a PB400 to play with tomorrow, so will let you know how it goes.

All the best.

That's better, now we know where you're stuck ;-) Just drop the .dll's in the \windows\ directory.

gpspassion Posted - 06 mars 2006 : 16:05:28
Welcome to the forums.
That's generally indicative of missing libraries (.dll), you can download ready made "packs" here http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=20212

Hi
I have followed all the instructions and have uncovered Windows CE however any software I try to install gives me a message saying that it is not compatible with the connected device type
Have I missed something? I have also tried putting the .cab files on an SD card straight onto the gps 400 and it still doesnt work.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Has anyone got any software to install properly?

Thanks

If you really need to install TomTom then check the Advent thread linked from the top article on the portal.

1. It automates the installatio, original one is reinstated upon exit
2. It's there, you just need to "wake it up" ;-)

You got it, what was the problem originally ? I take it you're in the UK, is the GPS400 becoming popular over there ?

PS - I grouped your messages so as not to confuse people stumbling on this thread ;-)
