GPS ASSISTED SKIING - SNOWRANGER V3 MAPS 2009/2010 Worldwide Coverage - Turn by Turn Directions - Snow Days Website
V2 on the runs at the Grands Montets in Chamonix!
A new ski season upon us as well as a new version of the SnowRanger Ski Maps for North America and Europe by Mountain Dynamics, and this year's addition is amazing: turn by turn directions just as we get from our AIOs or Smartphones when driving!
These SnowRanger ski maps leverage the large and colorful display of Garmin's handheld units, the Colorado and Oregon handheld systems or the nuvi 550 Crossover GPS. They can also use their shaded terrain feature for some pretty stunning rendering of the resorts and trails that are now color coded. The addition of Turn-by-Turn Directions is certainly quite intriguing, especially with voice directions on the vocal systems like the nuvis. I probably won't be able to test these maps live in the field until February but it if you do, make sure to leave a comment below.
The maps are available via download (North Americal only), CD-ROM or pre-programmed microSD cards and the pricing varies depending on the coverage, regional sets in North America cost $40, and $80 gets you the whole continent. Europe is more expensive with resorts priced at $40, countries at $80 and the whole area at $160.
Other than the maps for GPS systems, Mountain Dynamics also offer the Snow Days feature on their site where you can upload and share your tracks. This feature used to be limited to North America, but it is now available for 500 resorts worldwide, including Europe. Now let's see who can log in the most runs in this winter ;-)

Posted - 22 févr. 2010 : 13:28:13 Haven't tried guidance yet, but I've started uploading tracks using the Snow Days online tool and it's quite impressive with its analysis of the lifts, runs and breaks : http://www.mountaindynamics.com/en/sdmap.php?tid=7424
