POSTED 20081214 - sun4tzu has posted a step by step guide to install a purchased version of OCN8 (OEM version of iGo 8) on the Plenio -> >> details <<

I've just completed a 2500 mile round-trip using my Plenio VXA3000 7" GPS with GPS software other than what it was installed with.

First, use the C310Auto.zip file link found on this forum.

Second, get a spare SD card, and place the following directories on it:
~\cities
~\MobileNavigator

Copy the executable from the C310Auto.zip file into the ~\MobileNavigator directory, rename it MobileNavigator.exe.

Copy the .c31 file into the ~\MobileNavigator directory, and rename it MobileNavigagor.c31.

Place whatever other software you wish on the unit into appropriate directories on the SD card. One note, the SD card is named "SD MEMORY", not the usual "SDMMC". Edit the .c31 file appropriately, to call whatever programs you wish (cedesktop.exe, etc.).

I have not altered the unit in any other way, changed the registry, etc. It still comes up with the default menu, and touching the "Navigation" button on the screen executes the C310Auto.exe file (if you've followed the above directions correctly). The only side-effect is that once the C310Auto.exe file exits, you wind up with an on-screen error that the navigation program failed. It must expect some other error code returned other than what the c310auto.exe program ends with.

I have no idea if the unit can be connected to ActiveSync (haven't tried it yet), or altered in other ways for other purposes. I simply wanted software other than what the unit came with (the Smart2Go software is - yech!).

Anyway, just wanted to let others know it can be done - easily. Don't ask for other details - install your own legally obtained software. But it can be done.

I also have Delorme SA 2009, which I will attempt to install via ActiveSync, if ActiveSync will work. This software has been problematic on another GPS (the Holux GPSMile52+), as necessary DLLs, etc., aren't there, and I haven't stumbled on the right combination of other replacement DLLs to make it work. I've successfully used this software on an IPaq 3800 with WM2003, so it seems to be a case of just finding the right DLL combination(s).

tundrwd,

Hi. I tryed but it gave me error #2. Which is I think file not found.

Can you, please, clarify the script file.

Let's say I have a program installed in the INST folder in the root of the SD card. My line in the sript is:

call \SD MEMORY\INST\program.exe

Is it correct? Because it does not appear to work.

The original .c31 file has also few registry modifications. I assumed these are not required and commented them out. Is it correct too?

Thanks

I made no registry modifications at all.

Just renamed c310auto.exe, and the corresponding script.

Script calls program as you have described. I'll look at my script tonite and post a copy of it. Just the one line to call the correct program.

Here's the basic layout of the SD card image:

+-cities
+-<yoursoftwaredirhere>
+-MobileNavigator
+ MobileNavigator.exe (renamed c310auto.exe)
+ MobileNavigator.c31 (renamed c310auto.c31)

Contents of MobileNavigator.c31:
============= start of file ============
call "\SD MEMORY\<yoursoftwaredirhere>\<yourprogramnamehere.exe>"

exit
============= end of file ============
That's it...

I plan to try the C31 software soon. I was wondering if anyone had noticed the rubber plug on the botton right side. It covers a 18 pin connector that looks like the type of connector used on some smartphones and old pcmcia ethernet cards for the dongle connection. Sure would like to know what it's use. I took the 4 screws out of the case and removed the back. The screew side has 2 ribbon cables to the main pc board. I didn't take the main pc board out to look at the componets yet.
I did view some of my pictures on the Plenio and it seems like it doesn't handle pictures in formats other than the screen default Res very well.
I'd sure like better maps as my first trip around my town left out streets that had been their for many years.
Seems like their aren't any hardware hacks for this unit.

I also had #193 error with c310auto.31 (renamed to MobileNavigator.c31 of course).
I gave up and downloaded ceDesktop.exe and rename it to MobileNavigator.exe

Now I have a taskbar when I click "Navigation", but all my GPS and other WinCE programs that run perfectly on Mio C310 and Navman icn520 can not run and always shows "xxx" is not a valid Windows CE application. I thought MioC310 is also Win CE.NET 4.2?

I wonder maybe firmware 1.62 has some kind of protection? Any thoughts? TIA.

I have no idea. Mine works perfectly with firmware 1.62. The C310Auto I'm using is dated Jan 19, 2007 1:37pm, 15360 bytes. Might want to check on that.

I'm using the same version of C310auto, and the 139 error seems to be the same as "not a valid application" for Win CE.NET 4.2.

Out of curiosity, what other GPS software did you test? TIA.

Are you getting the error from c310auto? Or will c310auto run cedesktop?

c310auto can run ceDesktop because ceDesktop works.

Almost all my WinCE programs (for example total commander cecmd) would get error #139 from c310auto script, or "not a valid windows ce application" from ceDesktop.

The only GPS software that passes the error code is igo dated May 30, 2006

UPDATE:
Finally another GPS software that works is OCN8.0.0.44902 (Jul 2 2008)!

Question(s):

1. Is there a way to get the AAC/AC3 audio codec back into the VXA-3000 so there is audio for the MPEG 4? It seems like the .264 MPEG 4 is not recognized.

2. What is the best/smallest video/audio format that has worked for you folks out there on this unit? What do you use to convert to video/audio?

3.What is the larges SD Card that this sucker while be able to use fully?

Thank you.

Error 193 most likely is caused by missing DLLs. One can google for "DLL pack" to find collections of DLLs to make applications work under stripped down CE OS. I did not try it yet, so it is just my guess.

Not sure either, but a 193 might also refer to an incompatible binary. The Plenio VXA3000 is an ARM device (most of these are, but not all), so something compiled for MIPS, for instance, won't be compatible for an ARM.

Need to know the origin of the software being run, and if it is binary compatible with an ARM9 processor.

i use the 4 gig sd card that i normally use on my mio c320 and iguidance works. i added the MobileNavigator and cities directories onto the card and use cedesktop to access the files. i dont remember how i set up iguidance on the sd card, but if you follow the instructions provided on the mio forum for the c320, you will get it working. do a search on the mio forum for iguidance and you will find all the info you need.

as for tomtom 7, the problem i'm having is i can't edit the registry to point to the map on my sd card. i know it works because i can move the map of guam into the "my document" directory and tomtom runs fine. i just need to tell the program to look for the maps on my sd card. i've try miotool and regedit that came with the c310auto.zip and it said it's not a wince application. i found a regedit that works, but i can't find a keyboard to edit the parameters.

one other note is once you power the unit down, all settings you edited are erased. that's the only thing i don't like about this unit.

The original software that comes with Plenio (Smart2Go) is terrible with route calculation. For the fast route it will still guide you through small streets ignoring highways. THis makes any software better than the original.

So far it seems that OCN8 is the only one that works on this unit.

OCN8 PNA version just works. At least 44902 build. Just use sys.txt file few posts above. As the matter of fact iGO8 does not work - gives "is nod valid WinCE application" error. It just might need some DLLs (difference between butchered WinCE and WM). I can not imagine it was built for anything else besides ARM CPU-wise.

Actually it performs quite well. Given it is not overloaded with POIs. It gets stuck on loading POI Manager when all USA POIs are in the folder. However it can handle one or few state POIs OK. Just make sure that "save" folder is deleted otherwise it will not recover.

One more thing to remember. Plenio is somewhat picky about SD card. I tried one (cheap/slow, Centon branded) and had all kind of issues. Once switched to 60x Patriot it worked fine.

Can someone point me to a frontend (besides explorer.exe) that fits following requirements:

1. No registry mods.
2. Customizable Icons with customizable links to the applications;

My intention is to invoke this front end by clicking GPS icon on Plenio. This way I could add other applications to run from the menu (GPS sub-menu).

I read few threads about customizing different devices and they all appear to have registry changed with intention of replacing the original frontend.

Thanks.

1. You did not have to format an SD card. Mine worked right out of the box.
2. Since you formatted it anyway - it should NOT have any label assigned to it. Assigning "Plenio" label might cause the problem. I would reformat it again and get rid of the label.
3. In the sys.txt file and in the script word Plenio MUST be replaced with word SD MEMORY. SD MEMORY is where the SD card is mounted to the WinCE system.

I've used the Plenio nav software on three short trips and while it does know where I'm at, it just can't seem to direct me from point A to point B using anything resembling a reasonable path. In first case I wold guess you got some files from iGO rather than from OCN. BTW it appears that only 44902 build of the OCN8 will work. iGO executable will not work. If you connect the SD card to the PC in the file manager you should see OCN8.exe file with "OnCource" icon. iGO.exe file will have iGO icon even if it was renamed into OCN8.exe.

Correct OCN8.exe file is 1.85MB large.
Correct data.zip file is 12MB large.
Correct branding.zip file is 1.08MB large.

Liquid30,

Not necessarily. However your data.zip most likely does not have correct resolution of 480x234. Open it and check if it has a folder "ui_igo8\480_234". If it does not iGO8 data.zip file will be needed. Basically OCN8 is the lighter version of iGO8. You will probably need branding.zip too for the similar reason. Keep all remaining files the same.

The sys.txt file tells the application what the resolution is. Application can not find the correct folder in data.zip and exits with error.

Just to check the sys.txt file can be modified with 480 replaced with 320 and 234 replaced with 240. It should load. However not the whole screen will be occupied.

Make sure that original lines commented out with ; .

jason12 and others, I can't thank you enough. I got mine to work. I resolved my "Program application database cannot be found" error by completely removing the following from the sys.txt file:

[folders]
app="%SD MEMORY%/OCN8"

I'm in the process now of removing unneeded files such as POIs from states I'm not traveling in and I'll add and delete those state POI files as needed in the future since the system locks up if there are too many. I currently have three "voices" installed along with all of the U.S. and Canada map files and a single POI file for my state. I know that there are some additional files that I can remove. I am in the process of removing files one by one and testing to see just how far I can strip this down without affecting functionality. I'm currently at only 886 MB and everything works great. Once I've completed my testing I plan on giving back by putting together a PDF file with complete instructions including file structure, screen images, etc. and I'll make it available to all so no one else has to go through the hours of frustration that I did.

So far my only "issue" is when exiting out of navigation I receive an error dialog but simply clicking on the "ok" button to close the dialog and then clicking on one of the other functions gets me back to the main system page. So, it's not a real functional problem, just a very minor hiccup.

Coincidentally I just finished it last night and was trying to decide where to post it anonymously so that I can update the file with any changes. Suggestions would be appreciated. If you'd like to review the file before I post it PM me and I'll see what I can do about getting it to you. You must indicate a willingness to actually go through the document and test the results of my instructions on your Plenio system. After 12/13/08 please don't PM me as I plan to make a vetted copy of the PDF available shortly after that for all to see.

I get the error message. It is an annoyance for sure, but I think the better GPS software features outweigh it. BTW, it creates a crash.txt file on your SD card in the OCN8 folder. It grows about 4KB each time you exit the navigation app. Just something to keep an eye on.

I think everyone gets the error on exit. I simply click on one of the other icons (only partials show on my screen because of the error) and then it works fine. SiliconJunkie is right, once in a while you might want to see how much space the crash.txt file is taking up and simply delete it.

Well I've gotten some success using mortscript. I've also looked
a little bit into altering the NK.BIN file.

I will be posting shorty a zip file containing an auto unlock
for our device. Right now i'm trying to figure out how to get an
on screen virtual keyboard device working.

Currently I have it so you click on the NAV icon, and it boots
into windows with the error msg removed for you. I have a few
programs on the desktop.. but this keyboard app is driving me crazy
as it needs to have registry entries and dll's loaded, which may
not be an option for us with no battery.

I guess i need to research some more about
1> warm booting our device. If it can warm boot, then we
can have the keyboard app running.

*edit* I've added HPC media player, which is based on
tcpmp (which wouldn't work btw), and I load it at startup and
unload it, that way it registeres media file extensions
so you can just click on media files to launch the app.
(I havne't yet looked into 1. how to turn off the
repeat loop, and turn on autoplay)

I started a new thread to make it easy for future people
looking to unlock their device instead of having to wade through
6 pages in this thread.

When I loaded other software, I had no problem loading other PDA apps, as long as they weren't dependent on hardware the VXA3000 doesn't have, or DLL's that you couldn't find a reasonable substitute for.

What does the "unlock" file(s) do?

I have sent the mfg like 20 email over the last few weeks and even a video sitting in a hospital parking lot and there maps showing 30 miles to destination. It has to be shipped with the crappiest maps ever.
With the current software installed it is like driving with a dyslexic with a blindfold on. This software stock sucks like no other out there.
Do you guys think you can help me get it working? I will help others by keeping some down load links active and get the stuff out there if you need or would like to with no risk to your self!
Just a note here. I got a nvm-4050 at fry's for 59.00 and it works circles around the stock software plenio carped up. I have to keep it in the car just to check the 3000 out on routes. The 3000 is only 25% right...lol Help me save a plenio!
If I lived in twain I would kidnap the ceo of plenio and drive him to a undisclosed spot blindfolded and give him a plenio and let him go. I would have a 75% chance he would never be seen again!!!!!

first post just wanted to say I have just received my plenio today and have read this 6 page discussion along with a couple other discussions on changing this OS crap that the company chose to stick us with, and must say it's pretty impressive what most have done to contribute to figuring this thing out. Some of this stuff is confusing and complex from a beginners point but for the most part understandable. I just wanted to say I might be able to contribute to the cause by changing backgrounds/themes on this thing. I do it with my ps3 and every other portable device I have so I will check this thing out in the morning and see what I can come up with. Once this thing is done it should become a sticky so that all owners have the ability to do what it is they want with this thing. The sticky should include this program you guys keep mentioning is on the furumn too. As for the unlocking of files to see windows is probably the biggest step to changing anything on this right? I mean windows based programs are real easy to obtain and change so this should be pretty cake. Ohh I have one question that hasn't been asked and that is about an external hard drive addition through the usb plug? Is it possible? The card reader should be limited but WindowsCE is not as far as I know.

PO8pimp This antenna works so good you wont' need an external antenna. It's the best gps i've ever had as far as reception. Also the version of winCE is stripped down.

As of right now i can't get activesync to run or any other file transfer program.
I've tried binmod.exe on the nk.bin file and it gives me an error. This one is
a lot harder to work on than the old mio's. :( but it still can accomplish a lot. Wince can run, some cool and powerful software can run, and it is skinnable.

Has anyone gotten any kind of input program to work? like a keyboard app? hell i'd even take a block letter recognizer.

As far as this being skinnable that's awesome. I wonder if you can use Winamp with WinCE? I like that media player. Also I have a couple programs for custom icons that I can work with to produce icons specific for this app. I have alot planned today but 2weeks vacation coming up starting monday and this is on the top of my list of mods to do.

allright so I bought the slowest 4gb card I could find which was 15mb/s 100x. Still did not work. I purchase 2 SanDisk 2gb cards and they worked with no problem. So card buying and trying conclusion is 4gb is too big for the "Stock System" to recognize. This being said doesn't mean other OS won't recognize the cards. I know that the drive sees the cards because the SD symbol lights up but the Navigation portion doesn't allow selection.

Also bought a Garmin GA25MCX GPS external antenna and tested it. Does not work at all. As a matter of fact it made me loose signal when I used it. when I covered the built in antenna and used just the garmin antenna there where 0 sats. unplugged and uncoverd hand and 7 sats instantly. I will write DVS and ask about an external antenna.

ohh also if you want to add pictures to the background or change your loadup screen pic you need to follow these steps. Open up web browser IE/FireFox and log onto www.lunapic.com, upload a picture from either your cpu or the web. At the top select "EDIT>ScaleImage", once pic comes up change width to 480 and height to 234. Once done click the "Scale Image" button. Then at the top select "File>SaveImage". Page will load, select "Save as BMP". If you want this to be your loading page, then save it as loading. Put file where you can find it. Then open up OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>480_234. In that folder"480_234" you will see the file loading.bmp. Take your loading.bmp and drag and drop it in this folder. It will replace the other file. This will be the loading page. Follow all the same steps as above and place your background images in OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>480_234>Backgrounds. These pictures will be selectable from the settings>backgrounds menu.

so I was searching around and found this post on the IGO/OCN8 forumns. This is what I was looking to do yesterday but failed horribly at and will try again tonight when I get home.

Hi,
Not sure how many OCN8 users have checked out the available skins for iGO but this site http://www.i-go8.com/ (hope it's ok to post) has many to choose from and the skins make the user interface so much more appealing. You not only gain much more screen real estate but you also have on screen shortcuts which switch to transparent. I've used about 6 skins that work great.
Couple of things to pay attention too, only D/L the skins designed for iGO 8, not 8.3. Most often the only thing you have to do to use the skin is to make a skins folder in the contents folder on the SD card and copy the skin zip file to it. Then select the skin from the settings\menu\skin. One other thing, most of the skins have 320x240 and 240x320 (and others) resolutions for landscape and portrait modes. If the skin only contains a landscape resolution and your device is set for portrait, the skin will not show up unless the device is set to landscape before you start OCN8.

The audio out will go the AUX in of my headunit and the video in will accept my iPod video. Kind of a weird way of doing things but since I already had all the equipment I thought I would do it. Now I have GPS, audio, video, etc. all in one w/o purchasing an expensive unit and no hassle of building a car PC. I hope to change up the boot screen soon to my vehicle name to make it look like a factory install :)

If there is a way to add more programs/functionality please keep this thread alive! great stuff!!

post some pics of the install when you are done. This will give others an idea of what they can do to make their system work. My goal for completion of my project is friday so I will have pics up hopefully before the weekend. Would really like a program that can allow me to run multiple apps not just the gps. That's why the cedesktop sounded awesome. If someone has found a way to incorperate the two please post a DIY guide. I really think we have probably one of the best bang for your buck devices. Shoot maybe the best on the market. I am going to write the company and see if they will add a wall plugin and maybe a batterypack device to allow for easy application instead of only in car work. been just a hastle running in and out of the house to fix the bugs in this thing.

Just in case the company doesn't respond to your request in a timely fashion, I just ordered a wall adapter for $10 so I can work with the unit from the relative warmth of my home. I should have it by Friday. http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/p16_GPS-Accessories_199195_Business_Supplies_10051_true_SEARCH

btw you can usally find plugs in the thrift store for about $2 or hell some device that has the plug for $2 :)

Buy.com has VXA-2100 for $99. According to DVS, VXA-2100 is same as VXA-3000 except the external GPS receiver. Following is email from their support:

"There is no functionality difference between VXA-3000 and VXA-2100. Only
difference is exterior design. VXA-2100 is equipped with external GPS module
and VXA-3000 is equipped with internal GPS module.
VXA-2100 will be suitable for large vehicle with deep dash where external
GPS module will allow more versatile installation. As for VXA-3000, with
internal module, reduces extra cable entangling your dash."

try this. as far as loading screens I can make them if you want. It's real easy. take any pic and change the size at www.lunapic.com to 480x234 and save as BMP to your CPU. For loading call it loading and place in the OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>480x234 file. Backgrounds in the OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>480x234>Backgrounds file. If you don't have a backgrounds folder make one. evh5150, Maps are located in the OCN8>Contents>Maps directory check and make sure you have em if not then there is your problem. The second problem is one of three locations. OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>common>ui>address.ui or OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>480_234>address_480_234.ui or OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>480_234>keyboards_480_234.ui. If I had to guess I would say the third one has something wrong in the code. I recommend copying these three files from the "400_240" or the "480_272" folder. I would use the "400_240" copies due to height difference, at least with this one you will see all the keys. After that all should be working. Might as well replace the OCN8>data.zip>ui_igo8>480_234>poi_480_234.ui from the "400_240" folder while you are at it. I would only do that one if you copied over the other three files and they didn't fix the problem.

They're all .fbl files and are named "USA_statename.fbl" and one named "Basemap.fbl". Is this how they're supposed to be named? Since they came from a different "source" than the program, could there be version issues?

Thanks again,

Nope - that's pretty much shut out with the Plenio system. You use one or the other.

I read somewhere that the default software would allow the use of background navigation with playing music/movies - but I couldn't see any way of making that work with the standard software.

Hello All, I picked up a vxa-3000 from buy.com for $99 w/ free shipping. Came with OS ver 1.64; Map Version 4.1.1.2765.

Went to product support site and got the OS and installed it...found out after the install that it is older than what was already in the unit. Emailed support...they said not much has changed from 1.62 vs 1.64 and that v1.62 is as stable.

Oh well. Google search brought me here. I have read and re-read these 10 pages and would like ask any and all people who have this working with OCN8 whether or not it was worth it because as I understand it, Text-to-speech does not work. I haven't had a chance to use smart2go much expect around my neighborhood and seemed ok...so is smart2go really that bad that people are willing to pay $75 for a legal copy of OCN8 and yet loose the verbal turn-by-turn instructions? Something I think you need to decide. Use the supplied software, if it meets your needs - continue using it. All I can say, is that after a trip with the family, we quickly dubbed the unit the "Nagigator", as the routing algorithm was so poor. Basically had to shut it off, since it's concept of "re-routing" is to get you back on the course it scheduled you for originally. I don't know at what time it will change, but several times I had to kill the route, wait several miles, then start the route again - in the hopes it would figure out what it was supposed to do, and where it was supposed to go. Smart2Go ain't too smart.

One question for the general audience - has anyone purchased the most recent OCN8, and used it on the Plenio (or similar WinCE.NET 4.2) - WITH the new card (after mods, of course)? I'm about ready to buy OCN8, and place it on my Plenio.

Can anybody please post data and branding files that are working with OCN8 at 480_234? The ones that I find have the correct folders but still get error (parsing) when loading main screen and quits.. TIA

Yes I did. I understand you write this? Very good job!
So yeah, I did follow these instructions. And as mentionned before, I get the "cannot find database" error with or without the floder declaration directive in the sys.txt file.

Speedylink - I've personally only found the 480x234 resolution in IGO8 downloads. I haven't used this link myself and am therefore unable to confirm that it includes the correct resolution but rumor has it that this link (replace xx with tt) hxxp://rapidshare.com/files/135022071/data.zip contains that which you seek.

I purchased a Plenio VXA-3000 from Woot.com and finally got around to setting it up. I realized the NAV software was substandard and obsolete, so I headed down the path you seem to be traveling. In any event I tried a number of hacks and did not have much luck with any specific set of instructions. I ended up putting several pieces together and seem to have a working OCN8 NAV application running on my VXA-3000.

I took the UNLOCKER advise from a ************* blog and downloaded the following:

http://rapidshare.com/files/173441697/iNav_iGuidance4.rar.html

This seemed to have a full working solution, with minumum maps (I think it had South Carolina, Virginia, DC and a few other states).

I loaded this on my 2GB SDRAM card and it worked, except I'm in Georgia and needed the maps for my area. I searched a few more blogs and found a link to get maps, points of interest, etc (essentially all that you'd find in the OCN8\Content subdirectory. I found this on p******z blog with the links to download maps, points of interest etc for the entire USA and Canada. They are dated March 2008, but seem quite current for most everything in my local area. The links provided are as follows (14 files)...

Part 1: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JV0NFYLQ
Part 2: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WMT94HV0
Part 3: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SIS4T5GQ
Part 4: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QJCWUJS0
Part 5: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WVSGL2IV
Part 6: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R7R5HDSY
Part 7: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7O0UHRTD
Part 8: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0ZLBK7R0
Part 9: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CF0009CE
Part 10: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=49J1KAYK
Part 11: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4Z7ILHKL
Part 12: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R68XCBO5
Part 13: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=K8WXJ0R7
Part 14: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GNE76UY3

Downloaded from megaupload is very limited, so I paid the $10.00 for premium services and then downloaded, un-rar'd then put them in the respective folders under OCN8 and WHA-LA, it works quite well, more importantly, it all fit on the 2GB card.

When the system boots, you still see the standard Plenio startup screens and main menu. At this point you can still use the media, video, etc. However, when you select Navigation, Windows CE launches and a toolbar called the Wolf Toolbar loads. This provides you with additional media tools as well as a link to launch OCN8. The application runs well, I have all maps and points of interest for all of North America. Once you exit the OCN8 Navigation app it takes you back to the Windows CE interface with the Wolf Toolbar. You can relaunch any of the toolbar apps at this point, however, you can't get back to the Plenio main menu once you are in the Windows CE interface (I don't see any need to do so anyway). All in all, I'm happy with the workaround.

I'd be happy to copy my full setup to a 2GB card along with $2.00 dollars to help offset my original cost of $10.00 for the download service.

Neal.

Yeah, I ran into some intermitted issues with RapidShare and other links folks had sent. I've zipped the entire setup and I'm in the process of uploading it to MegaUpload, it will be about a 2GB zipfile, so you'll probably need to spend the $10.00 to download it. I'll send the link once the upload is complete.

It looks like you've got an interface error. If you can figure out which file is causing the issue you're probably looking for an orphaned <layer> tag and the error is telling you that this tag exists but there is no closing </layer> tag.

Just got a VXA 2100 for Xmas, can anyone confirm that this unit will work?

Also, in looking at the OCN site it looks like their software doesn't have a version number; so how do I know I'm getting the exact 8.0.0.44902 version? Has anyone used the latest version from their site successfully? (As of 12/29?)

Anyone in MD?

Thanks guys,

Alright, so we know it's a 2100 issue now.

I got all the files, followed all the tutorials and got the exact same FFUIERROR = Parse error [</layer>expected] error with my VXA-2100.

Looks like the units aren't as identical as we'd hoped, at least in this aspect...

Definitely keep me posted on your progress brj311, I'll be interested to see if we can fix this.

gallion311

BTW, is the 311 in your username a reference to the band, 311?

Yes, it is a 311 reference. I was real big into them in the late 90s. I still go see them when they come to town, but don't listen to them as much.

It does appear to be an issue with the 2100. Is there anyone on the board that has been able to get it to work with the 2100? I thought I saw a post about someone that was, but after looking all the way through this topic again, I guess not.

It has been confirmed that it works on the 3000 and 4300. There has to be a fix. I'm confident someone will be able to help eventually.

Until then, it looks lik 0002ynad, you, and me are all in the same boat.

That's awesome, first time I've seen anyone with a similar 311-style username. Good stuff.

Alright I have even better news, I got it working with the 2100. It's surprising that no one else encountered the same error (perhaps only the 2100 identifies as such), but it was the data.zip file I was using.

The ultimate fix was too download the data.zip file mentioned earlier in this forum, as a rapidshare link on page 4, from sun4tzu.

Took a minute to load, then another couple minutes to detect my GPS signal, but it's good to go!

As a general question...I picked up a Plenio 2100 when Buy.com was blowing them out before Christmas. I'm too stupid to use the Garmin software, and I'm too blind to use the Mio. At least this one I can both see and activate. I can use the map or the current location features to set my "Home" address but cannot text input the same address...the machine won't even accept my street name. What's up with that?

Thanks again.

We need to speak to an executive at plenio.. and convince them of two things...
1> Multiple owners are interested in modding the plenio
2> Giving us usb access to mod it, will make it more popular
to make sales go up.

also if they save money buy selling a hardware only clean slate with no OS, and giving us access to run any workable OS. Some would like to run wm6 or linux i'm sure. I know i'd like to run wm6.

Maybe we need one of those petition sites.. and write a letter to everyone
up the food chain over at plenio. I'm sure someone would want to
take the credit for making them more money and maybe get a promotion :)

Checked out the link, and I'm downloading now; although I do have an important question. You say it's superior to s2go, which I don't doubt at all; but is it better than OCN? Anyone have an opinion on that?

Also, separate question: anyone have a link, or helpful info about adding more games to the Plenio? I found a link to a bunch of WinCE 4.2 games, many of which are supposed to work with .NET.

So is it just a matter of adding the folders, and using the desktop utility to load them?

When I tested all of the SD cards, I did not have the most up to date Plenio Operating system. There is an update that is now free for the OS here http://www.dvssales.com/support/Downloads.htm . This might actually be what is allowing the others to use 4gb cards because like I said before I had the version prior to 1.64, and tried many different SD cards and none worked above 2GB. I might be able to test a 4GB card again here in a couple days after the OS upgrade. If it works then it will prove that the OS upgrade has what you need. If you want to go higher than 4GB make sure it is 133hz or slower.

I think the long way is too download any of the free "format-to-format" converters out there, and just do some good ol' trial and error.

I've tested a few movies here and there and never experienced that issue, so I'm sure you just have an unusual combination of encoders.

Thanks Yellowstang73! I downloaded the files. So I take it all I need to do is purchase the OCN8 software and replace the display and renane the files as per earlier instructions.
It looks like the OCN8 will have to be on their 2Gig SD card.
I'm still a little unsure about the right software to order.
I took a short trip to a very small town called Wallace, IN. Starting from Lafayette, IN and the old software got us there without a problem. I was surprised it worked as well as it did,
But from everything I've read the OCN8 is much better recal when you make a wrong turn. So I'm going for the OCN8 as soon as I feel I'm ordering the correct version for the VXA3000.
Thanks again,
Larry

Hi Everyone! I hope someone can help me rather soon, I followed all of the instructions and got an error the first time I tried to use the Navigation system. However now whenever I boot up my VXA3000 with a memory card in the GPS my touchscreen will not work. If I boot it without the card everything works fine, and if I put the card in after it boots then it detects the card but the navigation button is still grayed out
I tried restoring the original files to the card and re-installing the OS to get a fresh start but it just tells me it cant find NK.bin

Please help.

It has also been reported that OCN will work but I have had no luck. I receive error "Program application database cannot be found." Please help - what is wrong? I installed Filemanager to the SD card and tried to execute the applications from there in order to rule out any other problems possibly associated with the Plenio.

Finally! OCN8 is working on my Plenio VXA 3000. You need to follow sun4tzu's post on page 4 exactly. He said he completely removed [folders]
app="%SD MEMORY%/OCN8"
That's what I did. Before I had been only commenting it out with the semi-colon " ; ". When I completely removed this from the sys.txt file it worked.

I have also found a skin that I have gotten to work. It is a version of diMKa for igo8 8.0.xx with 480 x 234 resolution. you may find it here: http://uploaded.to/?id=mgdtrl

U P D A T E - The skin seems to have issues. It will work great for a couple of times then the next time it loads it will exit out as it finishes loading. i can go in and delete the save folder and it will load. So it appears there is a memory probllem.

thanks a lot, Barry Wells.

OCN official site says that a device must have at least 128M free space on built-in memory to get the TTS working.

I check plenio website, the device has just 64M total built-in, so seems there's no way to make OCN8 TTS working on this very device.

is iGO8 the same as OCN8? Maybe Navigon TTS can work, at least it works perfectly on Omnitech, which doesn't have too much built-in memory as well. Anyone can help on this?

benpu,
Not sure if anyone has tried Navigon on the Plenio. Do you have a copy of Navigon? If so, just substitute Navigon for OCN8 in all the instructions contained in this forum. Make sure you set up the the Mobilenavigator.c31 file to call Navigon instead of OCN8. Then see what happens when you select navigation from the Plenio main menu. Let us know how it works out. I have had PolNav working on mine but I like the OCN8 better. I do not have the version of PolNav with TTS, though I have heard that it works.

BTW - OCN8 is another version of iGO developed to run on lower memory devices - could be called iGO lite, I suppose.

4. I havent bought my Plenio yet, but i plan to get the VXA-2100 because of its smaller size of 8mm in width. (fitment issue in my car) So far from reading its confirmed that 2100 and 3000 are identical except for the GPS antenna correct?

3 items. I have seen reference to software update 1.64 but as only 1.62 seems to be available on N's website I spoke to tech support and was informed that 1.64 is installed automatically with a freshmaps update only and will not be available seperately. Suposed to "better support for larger SD Cards" and some other fixes.

I have not been able to get OCN8 to work. error 2, cannot create file/sd memory card thing. Have tried everything and many times.
One thought, I am using Win 7RC which does not and will not display file extensions (.exe and .c31) should you use these extensions on file names or just omit them. The files show up as the proper type even if you don't add the extension, they show as .exe and .c31 if you do a "properties" on the file even if you did not type it. I have tried so many time I may have done both ways but at this point I can't be sure!

One other thing, should the zip folders be extracted or left zipped.

Wits end, almost. Perhaps it will not even run on Win 7?
Any help apperciated.

Thanks to this forum and this thread, I have OCN8 running on my VXA-3000. The only one deal breaker is that it does not support "tack up" or travel direction display while in 2D mode. With the large screen, 2D can show a lot of information and I prefer track up rather than north up (seems to be the only option).

I researched, and it seems that OCN8 simply does not support track up. Is this true?

Also, does anyone know of another GPS application successfuly running/ported onto the VX-3000? If so, please do point the way. I want 2D/Track Up! Many thanks.

Your research is correct. Track up in OCN8 is not available in 2D mode and is only available in 3D mode. This isn't what you want but you can change the viewing angle in 3D mode quite a bit. You might try putting 3D at the maximum angle allowed to see if that is a close enough approximation for you to 2D.

Thanks for your reply. I have successfully changed the zoom level/limit in 3D. The issue there is the street names disappear at higher zoom levels. As soon as I zoom out a bit, the streets labels go away.

Do you know of another navigation software that can run on the VXA-3000? I thought I read iGuidance, but have been unable to confirm.

Hello All,

I finally did run ocn8 on 2100 v1.62.

what i did:

1.branding zip and data zip should have 480x234 folder: I downloaded data.zip and then open it with winrar. I deleted all the unneccessary folders (other resolution). The branding zip does not have the right size of resolution so I open both of them with winrar. i copy the folder from data zip to the other one and deleted all the junk from branding zip file also.

2. I erased most of the POIs, only one left.

3. I erased the "[folder] and call" line from sys.tex. I check if i add "[folder ]call sdcard/..." line as mentiond in previous posts the software works fine but "sd memory" line.

4. I need to turn on Auto-GPS detection from settings after i run the software to connec to the gps.

Now What I want to have: I would be greatfull if you share your expenses.

I want to have TTS and I try to use any sound option with TTS but it simply does not turn on It just peeps. I check the size of all the other sound files, and they are around 3 MB in \OCN8\content\voice but not TTS files. they are about 20kB. I thought maybe I'm missing an important file. there is a folder called \OCN8\tts_loq which has a size of 44MB.

Did anybody succesfull get TTS on any of the plenios machine?

Another thing I want to have is the image of buildings on my map. I drive around with my gps but it just does not show building like it is advertised on ocn8 webpage.

I hope some expert stil reads this page to provide some inputs.

I have never heard of anyone successfully running TTS. I've read that it is memory intensive and the Plenio systems just don't have the memory to handle it.

As to the display of buildings, that feature is only available in a few select cities, it is not available everywhere.

sun4tzu: I really appreciate your guidance on how to hack Plenio.

I do not want to give up so easily on TTS. We know that Plenio 3000s have TTS on some of them. So it means it has ability to process extra load for smart2go.

OCN8 webpage says that they send cards without TTS feature. If your device can handle it and you can convince the representative, they can send you the extra files to turn on TTS. I think it might worth to put those extra files on my card and watch my GPS crash a couple of times. It sounds fun to me :).

A. Does anybody know if Igo8 comes with TTS enabled?
B. Does anybody have their original 3000 SD cards with TTS on them?

I plan to add TTS feature to my 2100 (even with smart2go) or try to add some file to turn on TTS on OCN8 using IGO8 files.

so far, I got an installation data from my friend. I open the folders and check that Susan TTS has the same size with OCN8 system. on the other hand, there is a folder called text-to-speech which has another Susan file in it. It has a size of 48 MB.

I unzip it to see what is inside. It has same file structure as OCN8 system. same folders, somewhat similar data. I override it with the original data. Good thing is GPS keeps working but still no TTS yet.

Tonight, I will try to save the file as is without unzipping on my sd card to see if it works that way.

PS: all the other voice files have an audio folder where all the sounds saved. Susan TTS does not have the audio file. I believe it calls a program in the root, but not sure about it.

Any kind of expertise is welcome on the subject.

thanks.

I don't see what the big fuss is about OCN8. After having both, I feel that Smart2Go is simpler and cleaner.

I'm sure it comes down to personal preference. My main purpose of my GPS is purely cosmetic and maybe use it 1 or 2 times a month for certain trips.

OCN8 is too cluttered with way too many unnecessary options and features. Not worth it in my opinion.

Anyone care to chime in what advantages i will have over the Smart2Go?

Try a few routes - see the difference.

Set a destination, let it route you, then get off route (especially with S2GO, since it does a poor job many times of routing) - let them both "auto-reroute" - see, and hear, the difference.

A trip 2 years ago using S2GO, the navigator was quickly renamed to the "Nagigator" by the 6 of us in the vehicle. It is so bad, you have to stop using your route (during detours, or you know a better way, or you simply want to eat, and don't set a new waypoint, etc.)

Those were the two most notable areas, including the fact that OCN8 has more current maps, etc. I bought the OCN8 SD/microSD card, I liked it that much more.

That's why I use OCN8 instead of Smart2Go, routing and rerouting was a joke with Smart2Go. It's not that OCN8 is perfect but it doesn't take me on nonsensical tours of roads I don't need to be on. The final straw for me was when Smart2Go told me to exit from a highway onto a side road, had me go through the countryside for almost 3 miles and then put me back on the same highway less than a 1/2 mile from where I'd exited. There's a reason that these units can be had now in the area of $100 and I believe it's because most buyers do their research on items such as GPS units and it doesn't take long to find lots of evidence that the general public doesn't like the Smart2Go software.

Got the same version on both my GPSMile 52+ and the Plenio VXA3000. Might have been a "point" version or two difference, but same major version.

Honestly, routing and re-routing are a real joke on S2GO. Routes are usually not too bad, but there are other times I can't honestly figure out why it wants to route you certain ways. They are definitely slower than what OCN8 showed, and setting "fast" vs. "shortest" in S2GO made no difference.

Then trying to go the "right" way, S2GO was unbearable. Miles later, it still wants you to pull a u-turn, go around and back the way that "mommy knows best".

OCN8 tries that once or twice, then gets the picture very quickly you are headed off some other direction and recomputes, giving you the best route to your destination based on where you are now. It ain't perfect either, but it's WAY ahead of S2GO.

S2GO only knows what it originally calculated, and there are NO deviations allowed!

It looks like in parsing your code the software found that you've got an unclosed tag. Look in the code for a <layer> tag which is not properly closed (missing it's closing </layer> tag). Insert the </layer> in the proper place and that should solve your issue.

Hello I am a new. I have the Plenio VXA 2100 and and have just installed MioPocket_3.0_Release_55.

When I installed the miopocket, I tried follow the instructions for SD card installation. I think I got it right. I used section 4d for Wayteq devices. So if you want you can refer to that readme. I installed it to the root of the directory structure that was offered to me upon the installation. (it actually asked me where my flash memory was I think, and I fearfully directed it to the root folder. (represented by one backslah) I have had a few errors messeges but it works. I can even use my OCN8 software.

(I use OCN8 by using the folders from a working configuration from folders from VXA3000_unlocker_0.13, only I kept the newer files in MioPocket.)

Just wondering about a few things:
First: keyboard in mio desktop doesn't input into anything. It responds to touches though (the buttons go in, I can go to menus within the keyboard, etc.) Has anyone gotten input into programs?

I will save my other questions for later posts-

Thanks in advance. Great stuff here and I am looking forward to joining the fun.

Is there anyway that while in OCN8 i can adjust the backlight? I can only adjust the sound, but the backlight is constant! Very annoying lol

I usually adjust the lighting when I first power up the Plenio in the settings menu, although I believe you can adjust it with the remote when you first power up. Once you've gone to Navigation, it's too late for adjusting the brightness.

yes once you are in the navi its too late =(

I also wish it started up right into the navi skipping the plenio's main menu screen

sun4tzu,

I think my SD Card may have messed up on this last trip to California. All the "speed limits" have disappeared, at least for New Mexico and Texas. Any ideas about which folders to reinstall?

I presume that you're on a PC and can view the OCN8.exe file. If so, right click, go to properties and then click on the details tab. Look at the value for the product version and hope that it says 8.0.0.44902.

I believe (if I'm wrong someone please correct me) that those are built into the map files. If I'm correct you should just need to update OCN8\content\map\USA_New_Mexico.fbl and OCN8\content\map\USA_Texas.fbl. I'd be curious to know if you can confirm that it does function for any other states and just not those two. If it doesn't function for any then I would instead suggest that you first confirm that you still have Settings -> Warnings -> Warn When Speeding enabled. You must have "Audible Warning" and/or "Visible Warning" checked in order for this feature to function.

If your software is missing the OCN8.exe file then I would suggest you have a conversation with Buy GPS Now. OnCourse Navigator software must include that file.

I found sun4tzu's post and extremely helpful pdf file today.
Some of the links referenced are no longer present and dead end, and I had to do a bit of improvisation to get the OCN file.
I am still working on a solution for the 480 display since the full version I downloaded didn't have the 480 display resolution.
I did email the company, but no response from them as of now.

this link contains instructions of a sort, and a working link to the V-Up Pro 3000 update:
http://www.dvs.co.kr/project/english/product/plenio.php
sadly, the posted link to the OS does not work, and ends in the same dead end I found when I started this process.
I did install and extract the files in the upgrade to my computer and copied them to an upgrade folder on my SD card.
I also extracted the items in the utilities folder and copied the screen file and res info app to a new 480_234 folder I created on my computer then pasted into the ui_igo8 folder since it would not let me create a new folder within that folder. Like I said I don't know if it will all work yet, and I am downloading the data.zip file for the screen res file to pop in there too.
