Edit: Updated with latest SLiMio (July 2008)

This is a pre-release July version of SLiMio. I have been looking into several unlock schemes in the last couple of months: Moonbear's first unlock scripts, Stopword hack, MIAO and most recently MioPocket. I found many good stuff, which I took, but then some sophisticated stuff I don't need (e.g., GAPI, NETCF). In addition, I looked for applications that are missing on C320 compared to C520 (as most of the unlock schemes were developed for C520).

It has four skins (or themes). Themes are actually based on one or two layers, so there are up to two backgrounds for each theme. The themes are stored separately (see the install instruction), so one can easily modify a theme or even create a new one (the latter would require modifying the file L2_settings.ini so that a new theme can be activated via the "System settings" screen).

What mattered to me was first to make things work (i.e., all GUI icons are active), second use scripts to work around problems and minimize user fixes (e.g., applications without "exit", applications that needs taskbar to be hidden and so on, application that need a virtual keyboard), and third keep this unlock simple.

Some screen shots:
Theme-1

Theme-2

Theme-3

Theme-4

Your comments are more than welcome. Besides that, I still need to adapt Jerry's latest MioMap skin to SLiMio (Currently 20080414 and 20080512 are supported - see my signature).

Cheers,
SkyLight

A couple of notes regarding SLiMIO's content...

1. Support of several skins (themes), where each theme is based on two layers. Current themes can be easily modified and newer themes can be added without a hussle. In all the themes there is a layer-1 main screen from which layer-2 screens are activated. In theme-1 through theme-3 there are two additional layer-1 screens - one for having a quick compact screen for launching regularly used applications and another for having a clean screen (with only MioMap).
2. Many applications:
- CE Commander in addition to FileMan CE and Explorer,
- TCPMP, Pocket Artist, Pocket Paint, XnPocket View, and the C320 internal MP3 player and picture viewer,
- Viewers for Office applications, Calendar and Contacts applications that synchronize with your PC outlook, Scientific calculator as well as C520-like calculator
- Mobi Pocket, U-Book, Microsoft Reader and an English dictionary
- Several games (I'm working on extending the "Games" screen to include some other games I saw in Mio Pocket and MIAO)
3. All programs accessible through Start\Programs menus
4. File extensions are associated with corresponding applications (I saw this in Mio Pocket)
5. Mainshell is minimized after restart or after termination of USB connection. In active-sync mode, the USB connection screen may be minimized by raising the taskbar (this may require a stylus pen) and pressing the "cleen desktop" icon.

Instructions are included in the Zip file.

Make sure the problem is not related to previous unlocks. First do a hard reset by pressing the off key for at least 10 seconds. Then make sure you have the SD card in place and continue with the unlock as detailed in the instructions.

It will work on C520 as well. However, C520 may have some similar applications already burned in its ROM. Try it and let me know what you think.

Any chance you can let me know how to get this to run from mio's flash drive? I don't like to have system files on my SD card. I just want to use the SD card to store maps and media files. It doesn't make sense to require an SD card in the slot in order to get everything running...

Thanks

There is an SD-free unlock out there, although most use the SD card. When I get to it, I plan to move the active theme to the flash drive, so you can take the SD card out. For now I want to see that it works as it is for other C320 owners.

No, it's very much like other unlock schemes. You get a WinCE desktop and a GUI to run applications. If you don't like it you just do a hard reset (hold the on-off key for 10 seconds and then release it, then hold it again for about 3 seconds and release again) and you're back to the "factory settings".

Come on guys, All I'm asking for is a couple of "brave" guys to test this on their Cx20 devices :)

I did this on my C320.

It works very nicely, although some programs fail to launch.
For example, ICBM won't run, it just says "Cannot find 'ICBM' or one of its components."

Also, do you know where to get the full set of DLLs? I dont want to download them individually. I tried installing some programs for my pocketpc on the Mio but they refuse to run. I tries adding some dlls specified by executabilitycheck, but it still doesn't work.

Some suggestions (besides including the dlls)
- Give the themes names
- Theme switching is a bit slow
- In theme 4, the transition between tabs is delayed and should slide to the left/right, not up.
- TCPMP network plugin or something doesn't work (it says "please update")

ADDED: Also, the MioMap thing that appears on the "desktop" doesn't work because it refers to the SD card. (And I just happen to use that same SD card to run MioMap on my PPC), so it tries running the PPC version, cant load the splash screen, and then freezes.

@Messyman
I rechecked and ICBM works fine. I don't recall any special DLL required for it. If you took SLiMio as is (i.e., didn't add stuff or modify things), there are probably differences between my \Windows folder and yours. Any other problematic programs?

As for installing PPC programs, that might not always work. I'm not an expert on this, but many applications have separate versions for PNAs (Personal Navigation Assistant, such as a PPC) and for PNDs (PN Devices, such as MIO Cx20). In any case you need to have the right CPU (Arm on MIO C320), OS (WindowsCE5.0 on MIO C320, usually Windows Mobile on PPCs) and DLLs.

As for you suggestions:
>> Give the themes names
That's a good idea. I'll try to come up with reasonable names (ideas are welcome)
>> Theme switching is a bit slow
I'm trying a newer version of Mortscript. With the new one it looks like themes switch in about 7 seconds.
>> In theme 4, the transition between tabs is delayed and should slide to the left/right, not up.
You're probably right on left/right transitions. I was caught up in the transitions in other themes.
>> TCPMP network plugin or something doesn't work (it says "please update")
That's new to me - never looked into this. In any case, how are you connecting to a network?
>> MioMap icon links to SD card...
My MioMap is on the SD card. You need to manually modify the script in MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\MioMap to point to where your MioMap (C320) is.

Well, the first thing i did after inserting the card and rebooting, was go to TCPMP. then I see a dialogue box, "Error.":

NETWORK plugin is not compatible with current player version. Please Update!

Its not that this is annoying, and it only happens if I hard-reboot the device. Otherwise the player doesn't display the message and directly opens the last file I was using (if any).

As for the PPC software, I guess I just can't play monopoly on a GPS. Also, I don't know where to mod the script.
Here are some theme name suggestions
-Theme 1: Nature, Leaf, Dew, Green
-Theme 2: Lighthouse, Beach
-Theme 3: Lake, Pond, Water
-Theme 4: Forest, Tab Layout, Blue

Oh yeah, PictureViewer.exe, Rcapture.exe do not work.

@messyman,
I am at a loss regarding the error message TCPMP throws at you. I have never seen it.

I checked Rcapture and it works fine for me (from the Multimedia screen or directly). The easiest solution is to replace it with another similar utility. Have you tried the one Jerry put on his modified stopward unlock?

PictureViewer.exe came with my C320. Check your \windows directory and see if you have it there. Alternatively, do you recall if you could launch a picture viewer from mainshell when your device was still locked? If you could, maybe you have it under a different name. If not, I guess I could copy it into \windows during unlock. For now you can use XnViewer, right?

Thanks for the Themse' names :)

It is unlocked after that screen, but there are not all adds functionning. Not even the skins. With the other unlock schemes like miopocketplus No 15 it was working. But yours seems to be much more interesting.
Also there is problem with unicode caracters.

Hmmm... I'll rezip and reupload later today, just to make sure I didn't have errors in copying files.
Do you at least have the taskbar? Can you raise it and activate the skin through explorer (it's in \storage card \ skin\systeminformation.exe)?

@messyman, @delster,
I made the following changes and uploaded again:
- Corrected some paths in TCPMP.reg file. I think this will eliminate the TCPMP error message messyman reported.
- SystemInformation is executed after verifying the SD card is "mounted". I guess the time it takes for this to complete depends on the HW and until now I didn't need to add this check. I hope this will resolve what delster (and dealpapa) has experienced.
- Fixed the link to SystemInformation.exe in Start/Programs/Skin

Here is the link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/103821706/SkyLight_Public_Pre2.zip.html

Let me know how it works now. I'm still gathering information on programs that you find problems with. Right now I'm working on moving the active theme to the flash drive (almost finished). Naturally, this would not have the problem of mounting the SD-card and would allow swapping SD-cards.

@delster,
I want to be sure I understand what you get and also make sure you don't have files from the older files I uploaded. I assume you are doing the following, but please verify I got this right:
- Make sure your SD card has the "pre2" version. To be on the safe side, delete folders "MioAutoRun" and "Skin" from your SD card and then copy them from the "pre2" zip file to the SD-card.
- Press down the power key for at least 10 seconds. During these 10 seconds, your C320 led blinks and after about 5 seconds you may see a screen with two options (restart, power-off). Still, you keep the power key pressed, until your C320 powers off.
- Now verify that the SD-card is in its place, and press the "power" key for 3-4 seconds, until you see your C320 starts. You should have the mainshell screen. Wait for a couple of seconds.
- Press the power key again, but this time only shortly - your C320 screen should turn off. Wait a second and press the power key shortly once more. Your screen should turn on and the unlock process start.
- After a short while, your C320 restarts (you see a black screen with the F/W numbers on the top left).
- What should happen now is that after a couple of seconds the MIO orange screen is shown and then it is replaced with the green leaf. If I understand correctly, after you see the orange screen you get the error message. Right?

Now regarding the errors you get:
- I'm not sure about the error messages you get when you try to change skin. If you have another SD card, try it. It may be related to the card. I am also working on replacing these scripts to MortScript (in the past I saw cases where copying files fails with scp scripts but succeeds with mscr scripts), so I hope this would resolve your issue as well.
- Some applications don't have an exit option. To resolve this, the GUI launches a script that runs "BananaPC.exe" and then runs the application. It should be visible on the upper right corner of your screen. Let me know if you see it or not. If you do, you can use the "x" to terminate the application. If you don't see it, I need you to check if it is hidden but running in the background. To do this, manually run the task manager (raise the taskbar and access iTaskMgr through start/programs/tools/system/iTaskMgr). Then click on the rightmost tab and check if you see BananaPC listed.

Thanks for your kind words. You must realize that everything is working 100% on my C320, so in order to make it run on yours we need to understand the fine details that separate our devices :)

As for your calibration settings - do you need to recalibrate after reset (like pressing the orange icon near the leftmost icon in the "leaf" screen) or only after hard-reset? Reset should not change your calibration settings.

Have you checked your TCPMP with the other network.plg (see post on previous page)?

then i get another error when I hit "Adres"

So the "final verdict" is that everything works, right?
Problems like you had with MioMap are not related to the unlock itself, as you pointed out. I hope your note won't scare others :)

In any case, let me know if things don't work. I spent quite some time verifying everything is ok before publishing the "pre-release" version, but still had a couple of issues that messyman and delster pointed out to me. I think everything works now (in "pre2"), but will wait for your input before releasing an improved version.

My intention was to keep this a simple SD-Card based unlock. I may look into making it Flash-drive based as well, but probably not in the near future (the same goes for some additional games I didn't add yet). For now I'm going to look at Jerry's latest skin and adapt it to SLiMio (I'm actually using an old Jerry's skin and I'm perfectly ok with it).

Enjoy :)

Dmitry,
Look in MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\MioMap\MioMap.scp, and change the link there.

Since I only have MioMap, I only launch MioMap. Would you, or anyone else, prefer this icon was used to get to a navigation screen which links to other navigation apps?

I'll probably spend some more time and create a nicer screen for changing themes, so I might as well add a navigation screen. Maybe even add another theme if time permits.

I'm not sure I follow you. When your device is on after hard reset, you need to pull out and reinsert the SD-card for the unlock to start. Alternatively, you can press the power key twice (turn off and then turn on). The unlock process then works and after it ends your device performs soft-reset (restart) once. What do you mean by multiple soft restarts?

SL,

Sorry for not being clear. What I mean to say that at current stage you have to insert the card, then hard-reset the device to load the skin and then soft-reset to be able to use the skin. Isn't there a way that you can load the skin without the use of SD card? I mean, when device is shut down, you then turn it on and it loads the skin from flash memory?

Hmm, now I understand. Yes, I've seen unlocks that run from the flash disk (SD-card less). These are based on copying MioMap to a different folder, and then putting the unlock in the original folder and linking it to the mainshell MioMap icon. I never pursued this direction, as my MioMap comes on SD-card. I may look into this, but not in the near future.

While we're at it, why do you care for this so much? After all, if everything works fine (and my goal is to make it so) you don't need to do hard-reset. Even if you get stuck (which shouldn't happen), you press the power key for about 6-7 seconds and you get an option to "restart", which soft resets the device.

The only thing that bugs me is the format of the date and time: I'd prefer mm/dd/yy and hh:mm am/pm. I found a "format" variable in the script but I'm not sure what it should be changed to (more hunting).

In any case, this explains why RCapture works for me. I'll think of a way to copy wininet.dll to \windows if it's missing (don't want to overide if it exists).

As for the format, it's mm/dd/yy by default on mine. I actually changed it to dd/mm/yy by adding the following line Format = dd'/'MM'/'yy in Skin\Apps\L1_main.ini under DATE section. I suggest you try adding Format = mm'/'dd'/'yy there. I'm not sure about the TIME format (I like the default).

Lastly, SLiMio comes from a combination of SL (short for SkyLight), Mio and slim (which was the intention of an easy/simple GUI). So I would go for slee-mee-oh

I'm happy to see that there are several guys actually using it. I will update it soon.

Do you plan on adding an uninstall button like miopocket? Of course not, why would anyone want to uninstall such a great program? Good luck on your next version!

Uninstall is quite simple:
- Hard reset your device
- If you moved the theme to flash disk, manually delete folder Skin on the flash disk

This is pretty simple, as no application is installed to the flash disk. I never thought of making a button for it, but let me know if this is really required (others are welcome to comment as well). I'm loading the latest version as I'm writing this, so if this "feature" is really required it will have to go in on the next one.

OK, this is my latest version. The change is not too much, mainly skin touch-ups:
- Added text labels on the main screen (L1_main.ini)
- Added a screen for theme management (L2_Theme.ini) and linked it to the settingd screen (L2_settings.ini)
- Fixed some minor bugs that probably didn't bother anyone
- Added a folder for additional Dlls (in the Zip file, but not required on the SD-card) and put wininet.dll there (for those of you who doesn't have it by default - copy it to MioAutoRun\Unlock\Windows)

http://rapidshare.com/files/110236380/SLiMio_Apr25.zip.html
[SL - replaced Apr12 version with Apr25]

I would like to ask those who use SLiMio to provide feedback regarding icons, colors and so on. As the themes are stored separately, it is easy to customize labels' colors and so on to make them more readable.

Here's the RouteManager.mscr script adapted to SLiMio. This is based on Jerry's version of it (I think he borrowed it from someone else, if I'm not mistaken).

This, as well as Jerry's 20080414 skin adapted to SLiMio (see my signature), will be included in SLiMio in the future. For now, just copy it to \Storage Card\MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\MioMap folder.

Mormatt,
There should be a text file (SLiMio notes.txt) in the SLiMio_Apr12.zip file. Installation is easy (described shortly on the first few lines), but I advise you read everything. Regarding using Jerry's skins, please note the following:

  • If you intend on using Jerry's latest skin (20080414), you should use my adaptation of it (change of paths as SLiMio applications are located in different folders compared to Stopword). Look in my signature for it.
  • If you intend on using Jerry's RouteManager script, you should use my version (again, changed some paths). You can find a link on my previous post. Be sure to copy it to \Storage Card\MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\MioMap folder

Good luck,

@ryshoo,
I have never encountered any issue with TCPMP on my C320. However, there can be several reasons for what you observe, so check the following:
- Be sure you install SLiMio on a "clean" device, that is copy SLiMio files to an empty SD-card and do a full hard-reset before installing.
- Check if you have this issue when movies are stored on SD-card or on the internal flash disk. This is to be sure the problem is not related to your SD-card.
- Try playing this trailer movie. If it works well, the problem is related to the way your movies are encoded (I use PocketDivX).
http://rapidshare.com/files/109465748/RL_MQ_480x320_768_128.avi.html
- Try other unlock schemes (stopword, MioPocket). They may have other versions of TCPMP and/or different versions of Dlls. If this works, SLiMio TCPMP probably needs to be "updated" (I don't think this is the case, though).

Hi,

Thanks for the work Skylight. I have an Australian c520 which works great with SLiMio (fun watching movies etc). There are some quirks with the timezone when running MioMap from SliMio though which don't matter too much for me. One thing that would be nice would be to be able to create a route on my PC and load it into the Mio. I've looked all over the place and can't find any mention of how to do this. I have setup the RouteManager so now I can save a route I create on the Mio which is half the battle. But it takes ages to create a long route even after loading POIs from kml files created in Google Earth or converted from waypoints etc.

Anyone know the format of the route.dat file?

Cheers

I don't have much time for this hobby, so changes are slow. However, any feedback is appreciated. I'm not sure I got everything so far, but don't hesitate to remind me if you feel I have left something important out.

@alvise,
I'm not familiar with your device, but here are my 2 cents. My suggestion is to do a hard reset (press the power key for at least 10 seconds until your device shuts down, then release it and press it again for a couple of seconds until your device restarts) and see what happens next. If this doesn't help, try some unlock scheme (after the hard reset, put an SD-card with "unlock" in the SD slot) and see if it works. If it does, you may be able to copy files from the SD-card to your device and revert to its original state.

I also suggest you ask Osprey, who has been dealing with unlocking several MIO models. Try MioPocket2.0 forum.

Good luck,
SL

@xtyler92,
Under SKIN folder you have two folders - Apps and Icons. In Apps you have simple text files (*.ini), which define how each screen looks. You would probably want to edit one of them. Copy and paste a section of ICONXP and TEXT. When you do that you'll see what you need (link to where the executable is, link to an icon and so on). Icons are in folder Icons, grouped per screen (start by copying an icon and later find/design your own icon). Once you have this working, don't forget to copy it to one of the themes (under SKIN\Themes\Apps and SKIN\Themes\Icons). If you don't copy your chanegs to one of the themes, they'll be wiped out when you change the theme,

By the way, I'm not sure why not many use SLiMio. I guess there are other unlocks that may be more sexy. I stick to simple 100% working, hopefully easy to evolve (add screens) and have a clear sense of what I expect from my device. In any case, I wish I had more feedback and comments like "I saw a good application - here's a link, why not add to SLiMio". Right now I track some popular unlocks just in case someone posts some cool applications (before I add, I check that it works... I have nearly zero tolerance for application that crash).

While on the subject of feedback... would you prefer that the Navigation icon link to a navigation screen (with MioMap and maybe additional applications)? I currently link it directly to MioMap, since this is the only navigation application I use.

Thanks for the good words and feedback,
SL

My response would be yes. Definitely add a separate navigation screen. I know a lot of people do use more than just miomap as rlwetzel stated and it would be nice just to move to that specific screen to launch the application. I guess the downside would be having a screen dedicated strictly for miomap for those that don't. I will have to try what you suggested about adding the app later this week. I am still working on a small bug of getting V7 to run properly. I keep getting a pesky error message when I try to launch it. I think I have to change a few lines of the sys.txt or something. But this is a nice program, especially for those that don't like having a lot of apps that you can't run on the c320. Gotta appreciate the hacks for the c520 and miopocket, but it got frustrating trying to remember which programs worked and which didn't. I love your dedication to the c320. Keep up the good work.

@acessford,
From the error above, it looks like you have an error in the path of the command associated with the navigation icon (in L1_main.ini). You need to change StorageCard to Storage Card (add a space character after 'Storage'). In other words, change the path to
\Storage Card\MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\MioMap\MIOMAP.scp .

If that's not the issue, send me the path and I'll edit the original scp file and send it back to you (the way these files are text-encoded may cause wierd issues).

@SkyLight
GAPI is a video library file that doesn't use GDI at all and it gets direct access to the video buffer, so all operations may be obviously handled much faster. You will see about 20% increase in the framerate while playing video under TCPMP. So it is best to install the GAPI for HPCs.

"My Apps" was named by OSprey in his MioPocket (since release 16) but the execuation file name was WolfNCU.exe. it is a method to add your own apps and games quickly and easily without modifying any files. The original code was from Wolf from another forum.

I've been testing your latest version with Jerry's skin and it works great. Yours is the first I've tried that works properly on my c320. I also like that yours doesn't include as many pgms as some of your "competitors" since I don't use my device to play games and it seems more like bloatware if it's sucks up more disk space. My vote goes to a separate application page too as I have at least six different gps pgms I play with. I think you made the icons smaller in your latest version? I truly prefer the larger ones. One more thing: please change your version of Jerry's skin so that it's only an override file.

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. To re-cap, this is my ToDo list:

  • Add a navigation screen - I have an idea how to have it launch MioMap, if it is the only navigation application, and otherwise link to a navigation screen (still needs to verify this)

  • Make "Jerry's skin adaptations" via override zip file

  • Add support of user applications (WolfNCU) - I think I came across this a couple of months ago but didn't get to it (is this really required? I figured this is quite simple by means of modifying the current themes)

  • Test GAPI (naturally, if it does improve performance this would motivate putting it in)

It will take some time, though. This hobby is consuming precious sleep-hours.

By the way, I am not familiar with navigation applications other than MioMap (this is my first GPS device). Can you enlighten me about the Pros and Cons of the applications you use?

iGuidance and MN6 (Navigon) use NavTeq rather than TeleAtlas maps. Have more/better/different POI's included (depending on one's approach to POI's). All use different routing algorithms, some which are better or at least different than MioMap, depending on the map data and the users preferences. In my area iGuidance provides routing closer to what I would pick on a more consistent basis. In MN6 you can mod some of the routing data so one can try to tweak the routing algorithm for better routes for your area and driving preferences. User interfaces are different but none are better than MioMap with Jerry's skin. None are specifically better than MioMap in all areas but each has it's own strengths that are different from the others.

I'd be interested in the details of your GAPI tests, if you don't mind sharing them. I've wondered about that myself--I've seen a few vague assertions that it's better, and it sounds like there might be a measurable difference in TCPMP, which sounds promising.

But has anyone seem any kind of measurable or noticeable difference with GAPI and MioMap, for example?

@StickMonster,
I have a couple of tests in mind, although I haven't thought about this in detail.
Objective tests:
Run a video clip and see what TCPMP internal performance estimation gives
Run a video clip and observe CPU utilization
Subjective tests:
Run several video clips and closely observe them for:
* decoding artifacts (e.g., pixelization),
* depth of color (low number of color levels makes the image look patchy)

In the end, I tend to put as little load as I can on my C320. I'm not an expert on WinCE, but I try to minimize messing up with the registry and loading additional dlls.

That's too bad. I'm not sure I understand what went wrong for you. All you needed to do is edit the Miomap.scp file in \Storage Card\MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\MioMap and replace the line
Call "\Storage Card\MioMap\MioMap.exe"
with
Call "\My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap\MioMap.exe"

Use Jerry's DATA.zip file and put Data_SLiMio.zip in Miomap SKIN folder (this folder should be where you have your Miomap.exe)

I'm a bit confused. I take it the problems with Miomap and cePIMs were resolved. Do you still have issues with other applications? It might be due to missing dlls.

Since you mentioned RapidShare annoying cats, I uploaded latest SLiMio to MediaFire. Here it is.

i do like what you did though, the games and readers all seem to work so its all good, like it much better than miopocket
i'll check the calculator again to see if its still nto working, the scientific calculator did work so not sure where the disconnect is

Ok, been using this now for a couple weeks and found a few flaws. I wouldn't have noticed them because there are programs I usually don't use. I got bored and thought I would go through and see what everything does. Still love the program, but calculator gave me a program error when I tried starting it. I also ran into a fail to start error on the picture viewer and I copied the extra dll as directed into the proper folder. Also, I couldn't exit or find how to exit the scientific calculator for the life of me. Games worked good, although the tetris screen is way off and cut off at the top. I also still can't get miomap to run and I have tried changing paths. I'm not sure why this is, because I have a c320 and the miomap.exe is where it should be. I did however get a shortcut for V7 on the desktop and got it to run no problem. I can get miomap to run using the start menu though, so it isn't that big of a deal. Just not sure what's going on with the big icon and why it gives me error messages. Hope this helps towards the next release. The tetris thing isn't a big deal because the game is still playable, but would like the big icon for miomap to work and also would like to have the picture viewer work as well. Also there was another program that didn't do anything. It was on the page with the media functions at the very bottom. I can't remember what it is called, but I kept clicking it and nothing happened at all. It is a nice program and stable, just a few issues need to be worked out. I love that I can add other navigation software fairly easy and get them to launch easily. Now, if I would just buy a bigger SD card so I can get the 7.07 premium maps and SliMio on the same card. 2 gigs is just not big enough, especially when running my other navigation software off the same card. Hope this helps SkyLight and I look forward to the next release.

Ok... figured out what I didn't do to get the calculator to work. I still have no luck with the picture viewer though. I also still have no idea how to get the scientific calculator to close. I can minimize it to the task bar, but can't get the damn thing to just turn off. I also think I know what is going on with the shortcut for miomap. I downloaded a newer miomap version awhile back and I think the .exe is named slightly different, at least I think. That or perhaps I am entering the text wrong on the .scp file to get it to go to my .exe. I'll figure it out. As for the rest of the issues, they are really minor. I am confused on one thing. When I added the icon for my V7 navigation program, it is small like the icons on the bottom. Is there an easy way to make this icon bigger? Thanks for putting this whole thing together SkyLight. I have tried stopword prior to this and even tried miopocket. I personally always hated the fact they were designed for the 520 and it showed on the 320. I'll keep messing around with it and will probably work out some of the problems myself. I think my biggest problem was the messing around I did before I ever used Slimio. Thanks again.

Can you verify whether your device has a "MIO" picture viewer? Look in \windows for a file named PictureViewer.exe (Use explorer and make sure you set the options to show system files and hidden files).

quote:
I also still have no idea how to get the scientific calculator to close.

If you're running it via the GUI, it should actually execute a script that loads BananaPC first, so you should see it on the upper right corner (3 small icons, the left most is used to close the application). Do you see BananaPC icons?

quote:

You can specify the icon size in the ini file. However, your icon should support it - usually, icon files include several versions of the same icon but with different sizes.

...

Some updates on my progress:
- Added a Navigation screen
- Made overide zip file for Jerry's latest skin (already in my signature)
- Added support for user applications (a.k.a. MyApps)

I'm currently finishing an architectural change to allow SLiMio to run from SD-card, Flash-disk or combination of both. It turned out to be quite complicated but it would eventually let users decide which apps are "must-have" (on the flash) and which are not. Motivation for this is to be able to replace SD-cards (e.g., to use a WiFi SD-card) and still have key-applications running. I will probably settle for SD-unlock for now (with option to take the SD card out after unlocking the device). I'm still not sure if SD-free unlock is worth the effort.

I didn't really do anything to get the calculator to work. I put Slimio on an sd card then messed it up completely when trying to get my shortcut for V7 to work. Then I simply removed all the slimio off the SD card and then just put the files back, but this time I didn't unzip it to the SD card, but to the HD on my computer and then moved the files manually to the SD card. I didn't install GUI, I didn't want to actually put anything on the C320 itself, and somehow through that mess I now have a way to exit the scientific calc and now the calculator loads. I haven't tried it on all shortcuts. I'll have to look more when I get home. I also found why the icon for miomap wouldn't work via the directions in this thread. First, for some reason trying to save changes to it on my computer wouldn't work. It kept going back to "My Flash Drive\miomap\miomap.exe" Problem is that isn't the correct path. This time I edited it using the keyboard and word viewer on the mio itself. I changed the line to "My Flash Drive\MIOMAP\MioMap\miomap.exe" Saved it and wala! I also got the picture viewer to work, but I had to load it through windows explorer. I am currently doing the same to get V7 to work, because for some reason I can't get a shortcut on Slimio page to work. I am still working on that. Everything runs stable though and no error messages. Other than the few shortcut problems (miomap, picture viewer, V7) everything else is great. I wouldn't mind if the demo games were gone though. I started a chess game and didn't realize it was going to stop after just a couple moves.

No picture viewer on my device. I did get a picture viewer to run when going through the taskbar. Ok, as for the calculator... both calc and sci calc work off the office page, however all other links to them don't. I would suggest just making the shortcuts on the other desktops to just link to the calculators on the office page or (desktop). I have no idea why the shortcuts run there and when I click it on the main pages, it tells me components are missing or it isn't installed. I think moast of it might just be some code error with the path the shortcut is supposed to take. As for the scientific calc, I have no idea why before I didn't have the little button up in the right hand corner to close it, but it is there now. Everything else works great however. Oh, there was another program on here that did the same thing as the calculators. It worked through the taskbar, but wouldn't work using the shortcut on the main page, but I can't remember what it is. I wish I new more on what and where to change paths to, because I could help with these changes to get all the shortcuts working. My last attempt rendered my SliMio useless and forced me to reinstall it on my SD card.

In the next version you should be able to have applications in either SD-card or Flash disk without changing anything in the GUI (screens).

Well, basically all I can think of is there are some shortcut errors. The calculator is there just need to hit the right shortcut to get to it, the one on the page to the right doesn't work, but if you go to the office page, both calculators work fine. Same with the picture viewer, it's there, but the shortcut don't work. I can load it through windows explorer just fine, but it I try to load it off the multimedia page it doesn't work: Cannot find Picture Viewer or one of it's components... The same with the XnPocket View, loads fine through the windows explorer, but get the same error as above. My guess is this is one simple line pointing the shortcut in the right direction. I can fix it, if I can only find where the line is. What's confusing to me is the pages and what is what. If I could single it down then I could find the shortcut problem and have all these programs working off the main pages so I wouldn't have to go to Windows Explorer to get some programs to run. Oh, SkyLight, I also think Aqua Pearls is a demo, because it seems to quit after a few rounds and you get an exit screen. I haven't tried the other games for too long, so if I find anymore, I'll let you know. If you can point me to the file I need to change for the shortcuts then I'll change them. Thanks- Justin

Ok, I've done some digging. Basically all the programs are there with you unlock, and all of them will work. I was wrong about there being another demo game too. Chess is the only one. Anyways, all the programs on the screens are there, just the method to load them varies from screen to screen. An example of this would be the calculator. On the office screen the paths to the .exe are correct, where as on the right main screen they are not. Hence why the calculator loads off the office screen and off the start menu and when using windows explorer. So basically the only problems are on the main screen right screen with the calculator. Now, the picture viewer and XnPocket aren't correct at all on either screen. Both of these load fine through windows explorer or using the start menu on the taskbar. I figure if you can fix those couple errors on the latest release, then people will be hard pressed to find any other issues. Also, when the next release comes out, make sure to include in the instructions that the change to have miomap run off the flash drive, needs to be miomap/miomap/miomap.exe That should help ease some confusion. I wish I new more about code and how to change these things, but eh computers are not my strong point. Also, it's funny, you can't exit out of the scientific calculator if you run it through the windows explorer, but if you run it off the office page you get the little "x" to close it. That is where I ran into problems before. I hope it doesn't sound like I am being critical, I am just trying to help identify some of the problems. I love your program SkyLight.

Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate your tests. You are correct about bad links in the start-->programs menus. I made some changes focusing on the screens and overlooked the start-->menu links (I assumed this was likely to not be used often and eventually forgot about it). I will fix that.

I am puzzled as to why things don't work for you directly from the screens. Everything works well for me. I hope this would clear up in the next version. I think it will also be easier to change paths, as you won't need to actually change skin files.

Well, I did some searching through the skins and found why the calculator works in office, but not on the slimio screen. It's because they are two different calculators. The shortcut on the slimio screen points to calc98ce.exe, where the one on the office page points to c520calc.exe . Same with the scientific calculator. My guess is the same with the picture viewer. Problem with the picture viewer is that I am unsure of the path to it. I can copy and paste the calculator ones to the correct location, but I'll have to experiment with the picture viewer. This explains why the office page shortcut works and the other doesn't. I am going to try changing some paths today, although I might be better off waiting for the next version. Last time I changed some paths, I got all kinds of funky errors. But I have a backup so nothing wrong with messing around. I'll let you know how it goes. When is the next release coming :)

Well, fixed a few shortcuts and got rid of "contacts" in the office menue. I also changed the shortcut for the calander to go to the mio system screen. Oh, I also fixed thshortcuts for the calculator, so on the left screen it now loads mio520 calc. Now everything works that I can get working. I have no idea what to do to make contacts work. Most of the stuff seemed to be simple shortcut errors. I have no idea why calc96ce wouldn't load, because I see that it is in windows. Not a biggy, because who needs 3 different calculators anyways. Funny thing is, now I have all this done the new version will come out. I just like that every button does something now and no more error messages. Oh, I just moved my shortcut for V7 where the contacts button was on the office screen. I never could get it to load right on the black screen to the left. Figure I would update with my progress. Oh, the one picture viewer wouldn't run for me even under windows, so I just changed it to the picture viewer that was in with the file viewer programs. Works fine and it lets me view pictures and has a slide show. Again, no real need for 2 different picture viewers.

LOL... I was just debating that after making the shortcut corrections and having everything running so smoothly, if I even want another version :). I am thinking an SD free version would be cool, except for the fact of hooking my mio to the computer everytime I want to make changes. It's a lot easier just to move the SD card back and forth. I am using Jerry's Latest skin... I just downloaded it off his website. It works great and I even got the speedcams working. I see no reason to add it, because it is simple to get right off his website. That and it keeps the size of the slimio download a little smaller. I look forward to seeing your changes. Personally, once I got into changing the shortcuts, I found it to be really easy. Just needed to make sure to do them in all the skins, otherwise I got an error at startup. I really love it. I was going to add igo8, bu couldn't quite get it running on my 320, I figured I would delete the chess game and just put a shortcut for it there. But eh, now I am looking for something else to put there. I was considering adding navigon software to my mio, however I can't seem to find a good download that runs smoothly on the c320. Anyways, I'll keep checking back. I have run everything now since my changes and everything now runs flawlessly. Contacts is gone because I never could get it to work, and I relinked the calender shortcut to just bring up the miomap setting screen. I figure I can use the calender there. I might do some looking around at pdamill to see what other games I can add. Thanks again- Justin

Here's my latest SLiMio version (May25):
http://www.mediafire.com/?b0tyvtxsx2h

Please read the notes within it. Below is a brief list of the changes:

  • Changed the unlock scheme to start with a Mortscript script, offering the user to choose between Storage Card based unlock and Flash Disk based unlock. The type of unlock determines the content of some files (e.g., registry files).

  • Changed the GUI links to point to intermediate "layer" of scripts. This enables the user to place applications on SD-card or Flash Disk without making changes to GUI files. For example, the path should be
    \Storage Card\MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\ApplicationX\AppX.exe or
\My Flash Disk\MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\ApplicationX\AppX.exe (the location is checked automatically).

  • Changed the GUI (screens) to reference the intermediate scripts relatively. This enables the GUI to run from SD-card or Flash Disk.

  • Added a Navigation screen, which includes links to MioMap, Route Manager (MioMap's) and Destinator. Additional links may be added to this screen.

  • Added support for User-Applications (a.k.a. MyApps), based on WolfNCU and Osprey's skin.

  • Added Bubblets (game) and an alarm-clock tool (from ste's post, on MioPocket2.0 thread).

  • Replaced XnPocket with an Image Viewer (application was there in previous versions, but not linked to) and corrected file associations accordingly.

  • Fixed Main-->Programs links and made it support both SD-based and FD-based unlocks.

Note that while applications may be stored on both SD and FD, the SD path takes precedence. The idea is that important applications may be stored on the Flash Disk, but a newer version can be run by putting it on an SD-card and plugging the card in. One should be careful when using this feature.

As the structure of the unlock was changed (not to mention option to store application of FD), the Windows-pane and "StopWord"-pane in Jerry's skin will not work. Overide zip files will be available soon.

There were many changes, some of which quite "deep". Although thoroughly tested, there may be bugs I overlooked. Your feedback is welcome!

MIO's picture viewer somehow vanishes the taskbar. I found some way of making the taskbar show again, so that is why you see this. However, your MIO picture viewer should first run . Please check if you have a file named "PictureViewer.exe" in \Windows folder. It looks like you don't have it (I can add a check to disable the message if no PictureViewer.exe was found).

I'm not sure what this is about, as I don't have this issue. I uploaded another network.plg (from some other unlock). Try it out and let me know if it solves this issue (you will need to hard reset, probably).

Destinator is a navigation application, like MioMap, but far less attractive (in my opinion). This is just an example of other applications to be linked to via the navigation screen.

Route Manager is a MortScript that have been around for quite a while. It lets you manage MioMap routes (store, load, rename and so on). This feature is not supported by MioMap originally, which only stores the current route (so previous / planned routes are lost).

Enjoy!

I "fixed" the issues with MIO picture viewer (if it's not there, a message will pop up saying it's not found) and Pocket Artist (it will launch and skip the annoying screens). I'll post the changes soon.
As for TCPMP, I know this is not a real problem but still I need your help in checking if the other network.plg resolves it. You see, I don't get an error message regarding network.plg even after hard reset, so I can't check this. Can you replace network.plg in MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\TCPMP with the other one I posted above, hard reset, unlock your device and check if TCPMP still gives you an error on the first run?

Thanks,
SL

For those of you who use Jerry's latest skin (20080512), here are two overide zip files. These files adapt the windows-pane and the "stopword"-pane to latest SLiMio (May25).

You should copy ONLY one of them to MioMap SKIN folder. If you're using the Storage Card based unlock, use DATA_SLiMio_SDC_20080512.zip. If you're using the Flash Disk based unlock, use DATA_SLiMio_MFD_20080512.zip.

I will soon upload two similar files for those who use the previous (20080414) skin as well.

I have a MIO C320, and therefore I don't really know how to help you with your C310. Can you bring the task-bar up? If so, you should have an icon on the right for invoking the keyboard. You may also look in Osprey's MioPocket2.0 and try to copy dlls from it's MioAutoRun\System\CE4 folder (like aygshell.dll)to \Windows. Let me know if it fixes this problem.

I am just now downloading this. I'm not sure if I am going to use it or keep the version I already have. I might just take the two newer games. Slimio, what are the advantages, if any on this newer version (Besides the SD Free). Is it basically the same thing with some minor fixes? I ask because I put a lot of work into fixing shortcuts and whatnot in the Apr version and I am really happy with the way it is. I guess I am looking for a reason to change to the May version. I need a push or something :)

@xtyler92,
Read my previous post for the exact changes. What you'll notice quickly is a navigation screen, support for user-applications, an additional game and an alarm clock application. There are also bug fixes (and shortcuts, as you pointed out). What you may not see at first is that there is an intermediate scripts level between the screen icons and actual applications (in MioAutoRun\Skin\Scripts). This allows the user to put applications on SD card or on the internal flash (as long as the path is like MioAutoRun\Programs\Utils\ApplicationX) without touching the GUI *.ini files. The scripts will automatically look for the application on both SD and FD, giving precedence to SD. The only problem today is that some applications require different registry settings (SD or FD), but most applications don't have this issue. In the future, I'll use this "infrastructure" to let the user decide which applications should be on SD and which on FD when unlocking the device (with the registry stuff all set properly).

Besides that, you should test this version. After all, you were a major tester and many fixes were due to your comments

More simply I'm interested to install all the map the I want without "problems", and add the possibility to play video (mp3 is included), all the other functions are not important for me, this "package" is ok, for do that?

It's also possible to not change the skin for easy parents use (push a button and go)?
And about the language (italian), is not modified from the application of the package?

SLiMio will let you unlock your C320 (Cx20) device and provide you with a GUI to run applications. For example, it has an application that lets you play video. However, it does not include maps and the like.
I'm not sure I follow your questions on easy parents use and language. My best advise - just try it out.

Guys, anyone,
I see close to two hundreds downloads of SLiMio (almost 100 for both April version and May version), yet I don't get your feedback. I hope some of you are using the added flexibility in May version (e.g., Flash based or SD based but with theme running from Flash).

One thing that I didn't do is modify the fourth theme ("old MPP Blue") to work with the new structure. My own three themes work, though. If there's no one using MPP Blue, I'll remove it from SLiMio (or maybe add a new theme instead).

Great job SkyLight. Am using a C320.
I downloaded both the April & May versions.
The May version is much more powerful with the option of either using the SD card or loading on the FD. I started with the SD & today switched to FD. The FD seems to be faster & am very pleased with it. Have not tried all the functions as there the number is overwhelming.

One odd thing a Task Bar popped up with a Start button at the bottom of the main Screen. This overlaid the lower Icons labels.
I had trouble removing that then had trouble finding it again! Help pls.

New issue. Now that we have Active Sync & can access the FD files does anyone know if & how we can edit the Mio Address/Recent City file. This is the one feature I do not like in Mio in that you may have many useful addresses there & only wish to delete unused items yet have to Delete the whole file.

Thanks again Skylight.

Piney,
I kept the task-bar as in some cases users might want to use it (use the start button to launch applications like you do on your desktop PC). You can do the following with the task-bar:
  • Minimize it by following these steps:
    - Press Start
    - Choose Run (the task-bar minimizes automatically)
    - Choose Cancel
  • Make the task-bar appear or disappear:
    - Make sure you're on the GUI "top-level" (e.g., see the leaf background)
    - Tap the center of the screen (task-bar disappears or re-appears)

Well, I downloaded and tested the latest version. I hope that to no offense I ended up going back to the previous version with the corrections I made. I did this basically because a couple things didn't make sense to me. The first being that after a hard restart I end up with the screen asking me to install it again. I found this bothersome, especially given that I have to hit the power button and do a soft restart after a hard start anyways. I thought the SD free method would eliminate that step. That left me wondering what the whole point to sd free is. Anyways, that is all on personal preference and has to be done with either version so it is neither here nor there. Also, I like that the shortcuts were fixed, although I like the simpler calculator as opposed to the scientific calculator. All in personal preference, but on the L2 page I had the shortcut go to the c520 calculator instead of the scientific. I did manage to steal the bubblets game and I replaced the demo chess game in the Apr version of slimio. I did notice that the newer version seems more intrusive. After using it I found a few new folders created and files created in the windows directory. Also, since uninstalling the May version and copying back the Apr version, I now find the taskbar to have issues, often times disappearing and not reloading. Not sure if this is due to any changes left behind off the latest version. Another problem I found is that Ms. Pacman somehow changed and now I get a mort script error when I exit. I'll have to look through my 320 and see if I can see what was there and wasn't there before. Not a big deal, especially since I don't really play that game. I see some advantages to the newer version, especially the shortcut fixes, however I have the picture viewer working on the old version, but it still doesn't work on the new. On the Apr version it was a simple command line fix, not sure about the new version. You did a nice job though skylight and I appreciate your efforts and hopefully people appreciate all you have done. I guess after tinkering and adding a few things to your old version that I have it the way I like it. That and I understand it and how to modify it. I wasn't up to figuring it all out again on the newer version. For others though, it might be good to get the picture viewer working and the program you took off, some Xviewer thing, well I have that working too. Again, just needed to change the command line. I do appreciate another game though and it works great even on the previous version. I have a question, can windows mobile games work on here? or where can I find some more games. I noticed miopocket had doom and I found a mobile version and just was curious if that was the version they were using. Keep up the good work. If you have any ideas what files need to be removed after installing the new version so I can get it back to where it was with the old version, let me know. Thanks again and I love your slimio regardless of which version it is

The unlock is still triggered by SD-card, but I didn't see that as a real bother. You see, normally you wouldn't hard reset your device often. By the way, after hard reset you only need to press the power button, wait until the device turns off and then press the power button again - this should start the unlock if you're SD-card is inserted.
Anyway, I can work out a completely SD-Free unlock if you're willing to test it. SD-Free unlocks use the original (Mainshell) Navigation icon to trigger the unlock. When you press the icon, it launches MioMap from Flash, so this is used as a trigger for unlocking the device (running the unlock script instead of MioMap). However, om my device this icon points to SD-card MioMap, so I can't really unlock my device without an SD-card, nor can I test such an SD-free unlock. Let me know if you're up to it

Can you share the chess game you put instead?

Please share more details regarding this. Is this related to the unlock itself (I can't think of a reason now) or to some applications that were added? Does this happen on SD-based unlocks or FD-based unlocks?

It is fairly similar, but instead of changing the skin *.ini files you need to change the launching script. This is easier, since you don't need to change it for all the themes. The scripts are in MioAutoRun\Skin\Scripts - just find the script you need to change (either by name , or browse to MioAutoRun\Skin and launch SystemInformation32 from your PC).

Which picture viewer doesn't work for you? Is it the original MIO viewer in \Windows folder (Windows\PictureViewer.exe)? I'm confused. As for XnView, I thought you said there are too many viewers. I took it off becuase I didn't use it much and there was another one I thought was better.

Some can but some can't without additional dlls. Some also require additional packages that I didn't include (can be put in, like Osprey did with his MioPocket).

av8or,
You can do this easily. Under MioAutoRun\Skin\Themes you have the themes' folders (use T1, T2 or T3 folder... I need to remove T4). In there you will find two pictures per theme (L1_BG.bmp and L2_BG.bmp). Rename your pictures and copy them over the current pictures. Just make sure you have your pictures in 480x272 BMP file (resize, crop and so on in any PC picture editor). If you have nice pictures, I'll be happy to include them.

I didn't put a new chess game, I just deleted it and replaced it with the bubblet game on your new version. I have been toying around a lot with the previous release. I made another screen to th right of your L2 screen. I made this as a navigation screen to begin with, then I realized it was unnecessary given you had a blank screen to the left. So, I made that my navigation screen and used some icons you had with the T4 theme and added my shortcuts to V7 and Igo8 there. I also added my own theme with my own pictures from my wife and my honeymoon last year. Using Jerry's skin, I also added my own start picture to that. It all looks pretty cool and combines towards a common theme (my wife and me) and carries over into the launching of miomap. I tried adding Doom, but I am missing something. I gave up on it for tonight. I haven't tinkered as much with you latest version, only because I found your previous release so easy to customize and to add to. I think this is mainly because I have it figured out and don't want to get confused between what I have figured out with your previous release and what I might learn tinkering with the new one. Don' take that as any disrespect, because I love what you have done. I am thinking of adding a version of miomap 2008 as well, but with only a 4 gig SD card I am running out of room. As it stands now, I barely have room for 1/2 the igo8 maps. All is good though and keep up the good work. I would test a totally sd free version, but I know what could happen if it didn't work out. I am extremely happy with what you have already put out. I'll continue to download your newer versions, basically if not for anything else, to take things I like and add it to the version I am using. Some games I really don't use and I am always up for replacing them. Like I said, you are doing an amazing job and keep up the good work. Any major changes coming with the June release?

Oh, I forgot, the what is nice about the Xnviewer is that it allows you to view any picture image. The other picture viewer only looks for jpegs. I still have both, the problem was the shortcut didn't work. I fixed that by changing the command line to go to the .exe. I think you just had it looking in the wrong place. Don't get me wrong, most of the time you aren't going to be looking at other picture formats and one picture viewer is enough. I can also see the benefit to changing the lines once instead of in all the themes. Although it only takes a couple of minutes to do. I just type it once in the first app folder and then copy and paste it to the others. I did like the part of your new version that allowed you to create shortcuts to apps. I have no idea what to call it, I think you called it "Users Apps"or something like that. With the blank page you had on the previous release, and the new page I added, I seem to have plenty of room to work with. It is cool to have a page with nothing but navigation software. Anyways, time for bed. Thanks again.

@xtyler92,
It's a nice thought using the almost empty screen as a navigation screen. My intent there was to have a clean screen, for those times I'm in my car and just want to see a nice picture of my younger son. In any case, I'm about to finish my work for now (June). The changes are:
- Some additional apps, like Metro and maybe another Navigation application
- Faster theme switching (much faster)
- Improved unlock options:
* Option to bypass the unlock menu and proceed directly (I think the menu annoyed you - thanks for your input)
* User selectable combination of SD and FD usage when unlocking
- Some bug fixes

I'm almost done and hope to release it soon. I didn't have much time for this lately, so in some cases I had to consider efficiency v.s. development time.

So how are things coming? I keep having to go to page two of the forum to get to this thread. Figured I would post and bring it back to the top. I am still tinkering with the Apr version of slimio. It works pretty much flawlessly except for the task bar seems to occasionally stick where it doesn't minimize. I have been downloading other unlocks and stealing games, but the games I have stolen have pretty much sucked. All the games on the kombits unlock for the c230 work on slimio, but for most of them you have to rotate the screen. I deleted them because they didn't really do much for me, but if anyone else is interested in adding them it is really simple. Just need to copy and paste the files from that unlock into a folder on your SD card. Skylight, I also have added a couple more pages, another screen to the left and another to the right. Rather simple to do, although now I have two blank screens with no shortcuts on them yet. My plan was to add another screen for games and I liek what you said about having a blank screen just to see the picture. So I deleted the shortcut for miomap on one blank screen I created so I could see the picture of my wife and me that I use as the background image. Oh, I also fixed the time and date so it shows the same on every page. I like the whole AM and PM time and the date just saying 6/13/08. I also added the battery meter to the pages that didn't have it before. So yeah, I been toying around. I love how easy it is do change things and add things, and I know it would probably be even easier with the latest releases, but you were the one that said "when you find something that works" and this works amazingly. Great job again and keep up the good work. I wish more people would post on this because it seems like people are missing out on a very good unlock. I have been recommending it to other people in other forums. Hopefully they will chime in about their experiences.

I'm doing this for fun anyway... have to admit I've been busy with other stuff so I have been a bit slow. I have finished implementing all I had in mind for this release yesterday (late Friday night, after the wife and kids have gone to sleep). I would still like to test it a bit more and maybe look and see if I find additional applications I can put in. It seems that everything works, although I might spend more time to make things cleaner.

Regarding your work on SliMio, it would be great if you zip your Skin folder and upload (or send directly to me). This will let me view your changes and maybe get some ideas from you. As for the games you mention, I'm not familiar with non Cx20 unlocks. Again, it would be great if you upload them or a link to them. If I find a nice game I'll add it (with proper scripts to rotate the screen).

Well, one unlock I ripped some games from can be found at http://c230.wordpress.com/2008/06/01/unlocking-the-mio-c230-version-36-with-storage-memory-enhancer-route-theme-screen-settings-and-skins-management/
It is actually a pretty amazing unlock and their icons are fantastic. I plan on stealing a few for possible apps later on. The games are still kind of weak though. Another unlock is called asgaard or something like that. I can't say where to get that and haven't downloaded it yet. Another is obviously miopocket which is probably the best place to look for more games, although I haven't downloaded the latest version and deleted my old version. If you do plan on using some games from the wordpress unlock for the c230, make sure you get both set of files for the games. I think some are in the first menu where there are some scripts and then the .exe are under a game folder. No other .dll's are necessary. I am still looking for a nice calender program kinda like tha comes with PDA's or phones where you can add notes and reminders for days and times. I still haven't found one that works or one that is complete and not just an enhancement for what someone already has. I have looked all over the net. I might have to just find someone with the complete software for a pda or phone and just try to rip the files I need. I dunno. That would pretty much be the number one thing I am looking for in terms of added apps. I do like that you have kept slimio rather simple in the terms of adding new things. I know the other ulocks can be pretty complex. Hope this helps. If you find a good calender program that works, let me know.

I'll do some evaluating with your latest release.

I had one question though if I go with a FD based install what does that alter on the device iteslf? In an event that I would like to undo the FD install is that just a matter of copying backed up files back to the FD? Should I wait until your June release is out before evaluating?

FD-based unlock copies a structure of folders under My Flash Disk\MioAutoRun. This includes the Skin (so you can take the SD card out and the skin will continue "running") and all apllications. To undo this, all you need to do is delete MioAutoRun folder from the FD and hard reset your device. You may find a couple of additional files in the FD root that were created by some of the applications. These can be easily deleted also. You can use the current version for you evaluation. It should work well with both SD-based and FD-based unlocks.

I am almost comtemplating purchasing the c520 for its bluetooth to get online. But that point is rather moot because realistically I probably won't use much of the pda functions on this device. Eventually I'll play around with adding more software and programs.

Skylight, I have been doing a lot of tinkering on your still previous release. I did delete two of the themes only because I never use them and it makes modification easy. I would and see how it would be easier to do any editing once on your latest version, instead of copying and pasting lines 3 times on the previous version. Problem is I have it exactly how I want it, both in terms of the apps and cosmetics and really don't feel like making changes all over again. That said, the changes I have made cosmetically have been pretty good, I added all new icons, moved a couple things around, aligned the text under the icons, changed the color of the time and date and gave it the black outline to match the other text, changed the arrows for the games so they match the arrows on the other screens, made the icons bigger at the bottom, and some other stuff. I also borrowed your "user apps" program on your latest release and added it to the Apr 25th release. I really liked it and had to have it :). I also took the appointment program off an old miopocket release and finally got it working. Problem was I had the release that had the non working version of the program, but now it runs great. I also took the gapi installer from the same program and morphgear so I could play and try out some more ames that required those two programs. I had doom running, but it was only a demo version which sucked, so I dumped it. I did get the UFO game working from an old release. Still no really "wow" me games, but with morphgear (I think it is what it is called) I should be able to get and use better games. So my quest for an appointment calander is finished and everything works without a hitch with no errors or problems. One thing does bug me, the taskbar sometimes sticks up and doesn't go back down until I go to taskbar properties or click "run" in the taskbar menu. It can be a little annoying. I wasn't sure if you changed the taskbar at all or made any adjust ments to it in the latest release. Just something I noticed that can be a little annoying when doing something fast. Maybe it is something that can't be fixed. I also noticed the time was always in military time in the taskbar and tried registry changes to see if I could change it. I couldn't, however when I run igo8, and then close it to go back to the main page of slimio, the time in the taskbar changes from military to regular time with an AM or PM (depending on the time of day). Thought it was pretty cool, now if I could get it to do that without loading igo8 and waiting for a satellite lock. Anyways, figured you might be interested in what I have done. I'll try posting the files somewhere on here or rapidshare so you can see what I have done sometime next month when I am in South Carolina and not on dialup. That or maybe I'll take a screen shot and give you the gist of how it looks. I am really excited about the whole thing and I am getting pretty good at getting more programs on here. I am not sure if I'll add all the shortcuts to the "user apps" program or not, just so I don't have to change pages right and left, but my wife really likes it. Thanks again and let me know if you have any new apps coming on the next release. You should add the appointment program though, because it is really useful. Let me know.

You would still need to modify all themes, but you would have one script that launches a specific application.

... the changes I have made cosmetically have been pretty good, I added all new icons, moved a couple things around, aligned the text under the icons, changed the color of the time and date and gave it the black outline to match the other text, changed the arrows for the games so they match the arrows on the other screens, made the icons bigger at the bottom, and some other stuff.

I really hope you could upload your changes. You see, I have been concentrating on improving the unlock process. I think it's about time I make another go at the GUI itself. Your changes are exactly what I need to speed this up (probably less work for me - just take your ideas and even "code").

So my quest for an appointment calander is finished and everything works without a hitch with no errors or problems.

Is this application better than the cePIMs I included in SLiMio? If I recall correctly, you don't use Outlook so you don't need to synch information. However, I am wondering what the benefit of the application you took from MioPocket is compared to cePIMs...

Yep... it annoys me as well but I haven't found a workaround for that yet.

The main change is in the unlock options. I added Metro and BeeLineGPS applications as well. I'll put everything in a zip file and upload it tomorrow.

I might have never mentioned this, because I guess I gave up early on the process, but I could never get your cePIMS program to work. I couldn't even get it to install on the computer. It would start and then at the very end it would give me an error saying wrong "regestration key" or wrong "application key" For some reason something stops it from finishing at the end. I am not sure if this is a missing key from where you got it from or if it has to do with my own computer.... scratch that because I get the same error on my wifes computer. So I honestly never got to test it out, and looking back it was what started my quest for an calendar program in the first place. What I am looking for now is a program to keep track of phone numbers and addresses. I am sure cePIMS would be great for this, but I am not exactly sure what key I am missing. I am going to be in South Carolina at the beginning of June. I say this because I can just email you a copy of what I have done when I am there. You can ignore the background pic when you get it, that is just me and my wife. I'll look for the newer version when you upload it, I might even make a few more changes before I get to SC. Oh, and I would like to get your cePIMS program to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Here's the latest version:
http://www.mediafire.com/?xwzrwjgvmgx

A couple of words on what's in there compared to the previous (May) version:

  • Improved unlock options, via an "unlock options" screen or automatically via a configuration file (this includes an option for the user to select a combination of SD and FD when unlocking)
  • Some additional apps, like Metro and BeeLineGPS under the Navigation screen
  • Faster theme switching
  • Some bug fixes...

I tested it and it looks solid, but let me know if I missed anything. Take a look at the notes file (SLiMIO notes June08.htm, in SLiMio zip file).

@xtyler92,
cePIMs worked without any hustle on my desktop PC. Let's get back to that when you're back in SC.

I thought maybe it might work instead of switching to active sync, trying to install it (cePIMS) while the mio was mass storage. I got farther than before nut still no luck, I got the same error again at the end of the install. No biggy I guess, although I am in the market for a program that allows me to keep track of contacts and addresses. I am going to take a look at the latest version of slimio in a little bit. I know what metro is, really doesn't do a lot for where I live being there is no public transportation. Guess the motor city likes to pollute. I am curious about beelinegps. I'll have to see what it does. Anyways, I'll take a look and see how it goes.

Ok, got the cePIMS program to work. I had no idea I didn't have activesync installed on any of my computers. That done, I can make a fair comparison. I like the look and stuff of the cePIMS calander, however it is frustrating to have to redo the whole thing after every hard shut down. With the appointment program from miopocket, all the info is saved on the storage card and is there after every statup. Although not cosmetically as appealing and it lacks a way to store contacts, it is much more convenient. That said, I am still in the hunt for an address program or contacts program that saves the data on the storage card. I been all over the place with no luck. I also started to download the latest slimio, but about 80% through someone called thus ending my old dialup connection. It is on my to do list. Other than that, I am still making some minor cosmetic changes, adding shortcuts to the cecalender and contacts from cePIMS on the blank page I made. Figured since it is two to the left that it was a good place for it being I am not sure how often I'll use it. Still good to have just in case. I also added some titles to the pages, like "Applications" for the first page to the right and since I made your original blank page my navigation software page, I just titled it "GPS Software" Kinda gives the page a more finished look with the icons I am using. I will look and see where I got them and let you get an idea of the icons I used. It's not so much windows like and makes them look like they fit together a little more. Kinda theme like, but not exactly. I also like making the icons just a little bigger, kinda makes it look just a little cleaner. That and I finally changed the color of the time and date to white with the black border. Makes it easier to see and ties in with the text under the folders on the main page. I would like to do it in a light yellow, but I haven't had tome to look up the color code yet. Between this and getting brand icons to show up on miomap, I have been very busy. I did get the gas station brand icons to show up and I love it. Instead of just seeing a gas symbol, I see what is basically a sign for the specific gas station. So shell has the shell sign, BP the BP sign etc. I can't get it to work with any other type of POI though, but eh, more work for me. I'll get to your new version soon. I have an extra SD card just for the occasion.

phil2cool, hope you didn't feel ignored. The picture viewer program is there with slimio. You might just need to change the path. Search your program folder for utils (I believe) and see if you can find the program. It's there somewhere. It'll be on your SD card if you did the SD unlock, if you did the FD then I am not sure if it is on the SD card or on the flash disk, either way with a little hunting you'll find it. Then you will have to go to the skins folder for the page where the shortcut is and you'll see a line with the command path to the exe file for the picture viewer, again might take some hunting, then check and make sure the path goes to the same place the .exe is. I know this is a vague description of how to do it, if you need more help let me know. I think once you start looking and looking through the files and text then you'll know what I am taking about and what to change. Hope this helps, it's late :(.

I also removed the blue theme, because it was too much like miopocket and I didn't care for the look. When I email it to you you can use it if you like. You'll have to change the background bmp's because they are of me and my wife, but if you like the icons and the page setups, feel free. I added a few more games and will probably add a couple more after I get back from SC. I found a pool game that should work and also some racing game that I have on my h610 that I found that seems able to work on here. I won't be able to make any modifications for them until after my trip. I did add a pocket poker game that is ok, basically just like an arcade draw poker game (jacks or better, dueces wild, etc.) works good though. I will eventually add a third game page just to add the pool and racing game. You can also use the appointment program on all your skins. It's not a lot different, just has the GPS navigation screen to the left and all the icons are different. I change the words a little (color and font size) and made the icons a little bigger and moved them up on the main page along with the words (so they wouldn't be so close to the taskbar). You'll see when you get it. I added the words "Mio c320" on top of the main page in gold, but I wanted to make it in italics (still haven't figured out how do you know what line to add to make it it in italics?), so for now it is regular but I changed the weight so it would look more bold and added a black outline to it. Unless I get lucky, it might be awhile till I see the latest version of slimio. I tried again last night and got disconnected yet again before it was complete. I am going to a friends house next weekend who has a cable connection so I might try to download it then along with the other games I plan on adding. So for now I am at a stand still. I noticed the one text is still off centered on my themes page and I will fix that up too. Maybe next weekend I'll just email you the slimio folders off my flash drive if I can. Is your email address in your profile? Let me know. Once you get them from me feel free to use it as you want... just make sure to change the background images for both the main pages and the sub-pages. I am sure nobody wants pictures of me and my wife as their background :).

I spent some time on cePIMs today and made some progress. I found out which files need to be copied to \Windows and what additional registry changes are required. So now, after hard reset cePIMs is ready and there is no need to re-install it. However, the data is lost and needs to be re-synched with the desktop PC. This means that cePIMs must also be installed on the desktop, so that it can interface with Outlook. I didn't find a way to save the data (e.g., contacts) without outlook.

your efforts are appreciated. I have been looking all over for a replacement and nothing so far. I'm not that worried about it, I am thinking of just putting a notepad function of some type and just save my contacts as a text file on the SD card. Will work for now and will keep my phone numbers at least handy. There is still a pool game I want to add, but other than that I think it is pretty much complete. I do like what you did with the mscr files as opposed to the way you had it origionally. I thought about adapting this to my shortcuts, but eh, if it is working and I like how it is going, then why change it. I did figure out how you get the screen to rotate with certain programs and that helped a lot with some of the games I added. If all goes well you'll be getting it somewhere at the beginning of July. I might even include a little extra something in there as well, in case you are interested or don't have it. I can't mention it here. If I find anything new to add I'll let you know. Otherwise you can take whatever I have added and add it to slimio when I send it to you.

Maybe the solution is in finding a free alternative to Outlook. I personally like Outlook and now everything works automatically - on the first active-sync connection after hard-reset a "partnership" window pops up on the PC and everything follows quickly. I'm quite satisfied with this, but for those who don't have Outlook, a free alternative may be the way to go. Either a Calendar + Contacts application from those who published cePIMs, or another similar application.

I got it down to just over 3mb big, but no games, no office viewers, all the extras are gone. I just left the option to change from mass storage to active sync and I included your user apps program so people could add to it as they wanted. I also left shortcuts to miomap and to igo8, since most people are using igo8 lately. One page and extremely simple. It turned out rather nice, for anyone just looking for an unlock without the extras and an easy way to add additional navigation software. Hope this was ok.

I think it all depends on what people want. A lot of people, myself included, use the added features of miopocket and slimio. I like having the games, especially when waiting on my wife at a doctors appointment or something. Passes the time. That is me, but some people just don't use all the extras and for them "lite" makes more sense. A lot of people I have met in various forums really only want something simple that they can add new navigation software to easily. I think it is good for people to have options and ways to meet their personal needs. For most this will be miopocket and/or slimio. For me it was throwing together something that combines the best of both programs that I just use for myself. For others that know how to delete what they don't want from either, it might be the best route for them, for those who don't then they can download my simple unlock or garmio's version with added shortcuts for other gps softwares. The important thing is people have options and can find what best suits them :). Osprey and Skylight have done things I would have never had any idea how to do and without either of their work, we would all be sitting at home with our mio gps doing and being no more capable than they were when we took them out of the box.

I see your point... maybe I did get a bit carried away. It seems that several applications (e.g. Metro, MSDict) contribute quite a lot. Most of the other applications are not negligible, though (about 2 MB). I shall spend some time thinking how to make lighter versions.

For now, this can easily be done with the latest (June) SLiMio:

  • For an SD-based unlock, simply delete unwanted folders from the Storage Card MioAutoRun\Programs\utils folder. I assume that storing the full zip file on a PC's hard-disk is not an issue.
  • For an FD-based unlock one may do a similar thing on the Flash disk. Another way is to use the "Combination" unlock and specify in SLiMio.ini the folders you want to copy to the Flash Disk (the full SLiMio zip file can be stored on the Storage Card for backup or it can be stored on a PC's hard-disk).

In both cases, when the user tries to launch an application that is not on the Flash Disk (or Storage Card), a message box will pop up saying the application couldn't be found.

Thanks. It's been a headache, though... worth it, but still a big headache to support so many devices. MioPocket used to be for c520/c320-only (like SliMio) and things were much easier back then. If you ever consider expanding support to more units, you're welcome to borrow from what I've learned so that it's easier on you.

BTW, I'm tickled that you incorporated the MyApps/WolfNCU component from MioPocket. I was rather proud of that feature, but, as yet, haven't received much feedback on it (people tend to praise the unlock as a whole, rarely going into specifics), leaving me to question whether people actually used and appreciated it. The fact that you and xtyler92 both liked it enough to put it in your own unlocks is flattering and comforting to see.

Osprey, I think the WolfNCU program is amazing. I personally have used it when I am not in the mood to create another page for more shortcuts, especially for games. My game collection is huge to say the least. I wasn't aware you created it or adapted it. I took it off slimio, but was never clear on exactly where it originated. Very nice work, and most definitely a very useful tool for anyone wanting to add apps easily to their unlock. I hope nobody feels I was infringing in terms of not only the unlock I use, but the unlock I put out for download. I am not sure why, but people just started asking me for it. Wasn't so much in this forum, but the other two that can't be mentioned here. So, I took what I had thrown together off your miopocket, slimio, asgaard (I never spell that right) and started stripping it down. I finally got down to 2.7mb and tried to give instructions on how to modify it with the download. I honestly believe that if more people just tried to make the modifications they wanted, they would realize it isn't that hard and they wouldn't hassle either of you so much about making the changes for them. But eh, either way, I just hope I wasn't stepping on any toes by putting out a really small unlock without all the added programs.

xtyler92,
I didn't create it; I just adapted it by creating the graphics. It came from a GUI package (named WolfNCU) very similar to SystemInformation by a poster on an asian forum named Wolf. Most features were not as nice as SystemInformation, but this one feature was killer, so I figured out how to take it and incorporate it into MioPocket. No, I don't mind either of you taking it, just as I hope that Wolf doesn't mind me taking it from him.

I hear you on your last bit. Coming up with modifications isn't that hard. Still, I can understand people coming to guys like us, though, since we can come up with solutions much faster. More often than not, someone will request something and it'll take me only 10 minutes or so to code and incorporate. It's just because I know exactly how everything works and what to modify. It could easily take hours for someone else to figure out and come up with the same thing that takes me minutes. So, I can understand them coming to me. Still, it's also simply terrific when people do come up with their own solutions, since it often saves me time.

Find the exact path and edit Destinator.mscr (under MioAutoRun\Skin\Scripts) so that it points there. Assuming the IGO8 executable is IGO8.exe and it is placed under IGO8 folder (i.e., the full path is "\Storage Card\IGO8\IGO8.exe"), edit the script and replace "Destinator\Destinator.exe" with "IGO8\IGO8.exe". Don't specify that it's on the SD card. The script will first look for it on the Flash Disk and since it's not there it will look for it on the SD card. Following this, you'd probably want to change the icon as well. For theme1, change MioAutoRun\Skin\Themes\T1\Icons\Navigation\Destinator.ico (replace T1 with T2 or T3 for the other themes).

First off all many bravos for you work and time spend, thumps up

I have a serious problem with ANY of the unlock methods, yours and everything else out there...

If I turn off mio by pressing the power button until the page with the two options pop up and then select power off then when i turn on the unlock has gone. I'm not hard reseting I just choose power off.

Is there any other way to power off???

How do you power off your device?

this is a big issue and didn't find any answer maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm "loosing" the unlocking regardless if SD or FD unlock.

Any ideas??????

Thanks in advance...

2wheels, when you do a hard shut down, then start the device, regardless of the type of unlock you will have to do a soft restart (meaning hit the off button on the top of your mio for a second, when the screen turns black hit it again) and the unlock will start. You really aren't losing the unlock, you just need to do the step I just mentioned to get it loaded again. You only need to do this if you do a hard shutdown (meaning when you hold down the power button and the screen comes up with shut down and restart as the options and you hit shut down).

Thanks for your fast answer. Following what you're saying, every time I shut down my device I have to make the unlock screen pop up (easy) and then I have to choose FD unlock files already on flash disk to be able to use the device...

I have no other way...
Don't you think this is too much for every start up?

I'm leaving in a downtown area where only street parking is available so I'm not leaving mio inside the car... And since I actually using a motorbike mio has to sit for a long time on its own so I have to power it off... like Real power off...

Can I just hit the power button and use it?????

2wheels,
I see your point, but you have to unlock your device after you shut it down completely. However, here's how you can have a quick and automatic unlock with current SLiMio.

First time unlock:
Unlock your device (SD or FD) using the unlock options screen.
Edit the file SLiMio.ini under MioAutoRun\Unlock, on your SD card. Set QuickBoot=1 (this will bypass the unlock options screen) and UnlockType="SDC" for SD-based unlock or UnlockType="MFD" for FD-based unlock (depends on your choice before).

Following unlocks:
Every time you power up your device after full shut down, insert the SD card. If it's already in, press the power-key for a second (display turns off) and then press it again (display turns on). This will automatically unlock your device. The process will take several seconds only, since no files are copied. For now, SLiMio doesn't support unlock without SD card.

Yes the unlock process now is as fast as it can be, only problem now that I test it for the first time outside using destinator is the performance problem.

Directions coming with significant delay and I have unchecked the map rotation as I was advised on another forum but the thing is that destinator keeps hanging.

I'm using the PNA version which is very stable and fast on devices with less power the mio so this is another brain drainer... can you help in any way?

For example, MioMap used to stutter for many of us until we learned that changing a parameter ("sound_q_length", in sys.txt file) fixes this. Maybe you can try running Destinator without unlocking your device to validate this. One way of doing this is to use Jerry's skin (for MioMap) and associate Destinator with an option he provides for closing MioMap and running an application (you need to tweak some of his files - not top complicated, but not easy if you're totally new to this). Another approach would be to use a simpler unlock, like xtyler's (see above links in his signature). In any case, try searching the forums (here and on other sites) for others who have a similar issue. From my experience so far, almost every problem I had was already encountered by someone else and in most cases the solution was also available.

Well I've been busy lately, but I recently decided to upgrade to a 2 GB SD card, so I came here to get the latest release. A hard reset, and this is my "out of the box" impression of the latest version:

I like the added applications and the Unlock Menu thing. However, with the default config file, some shortcuts don't work. For example i can't access Scrren Capture from the Start Menu, but can run it from Windows Explorer.

When I try to switch to Theme 4, I get a message saying that it is not available.

And also most of the Icons have a generic "mortscript" paper icon

Another thing that bugs me is if I remove the SD card to add files, such as a video, I have to restart the device before any program (TCPMP or Explorer) sees the file(s).

@messyman, welcome back.

Screen capture can be accessed through the start menu if you follow Programs --> Multimedia --> Pic Editors. I shall move it directly under Multimedia - thanks for bringing this to my attention. Please let me know what other links don't work.

Theme 4 was removed, but I still keep a "place holder". This can be used for user themes. When I have more time (and some stuff from @xtyler92), I may spend some time and generate a new theme.

The icons in Start menu changed to mortscript icons becuase every application is now launched via a script. That gives greater flexibility to having applications on SD-card, Flash Disk or both. This is indeed less sexy than before, but I hardly use the Start menu (it is for "backup").

I'm not sure about the problem you describe having to restart your device after you remove and reinsert the SD card. Naturally, some applications will require you to update the current folders / files list. Are you sure a restart is required? What happens if you just exit TCPMP and rerun it again?

Skylight,

I actually pitched my version with all th added stuff, but I still have a copy. It boiled down to making room for igo8 maps (which are huge). It also got kinda messy, I had more pages than I could ever need and I found myself getting wrapped up with adding and adding more and more to it. There wasn't an unlock that I found that I didn't borrow programs off of. Needless to say it got to a major monster in terms of space. My plans to go to South Carolina got postponed for a few weeks because of personal issues. I will be down there at the end of the month and will send you a copy of the monster I have put together. Things were out of my control and the trip had to wait. You can take from it whatever you want and use it how you want. It might be too big for using as a theme. The number of games took up 3 pages of the unlock alone. Sorry for the delay, but it was out of my control.

Don't worry about that :)

I took a quick look at your simple unlock. It looks like you merged a couple of SLiMio versions, so there are several duplicated files. One thing I think is missing is TCPMP. To the best of my knowledge, many users are not interested in all the applications but they are interested in having a video player. Actually, this is the reason I started looking into unlocking my C320 - I wanted to have a video player like some of the C320 do (in some countries it is not included due to legal issues).

Well, there are two reasons I took it out. The first is that I was open to suggestion in terms of what people wanted and didn't. Because of this it ended up being taken off. Also, I never really used it. The forum where the idea came from, most people were just looking for something that they could use to add other navigation apps easily without the added bonuses of other programs. That being said, my hope was to meet their needs and people said to let go of the video player and picture viewer, so I did. Also, I like the idea of switching themes, but this was also something that I let go because editing them was such a pain. I figured this way people only have one file to edit to make any changes in appearances or when wanting to add a program. I figure if they want a video player, they can add it, or any other program they want. They are limited to what they can fit on one page, but that is where the "user apps" program comes in handy. In the latest version I did try to get rid of any duplicate files. I'm not sure which you are talking of. I know there is still some script there that I didn't delete because the files were only like 2k big. It was hugely drawn from your original release of slimio. I did this because .mscr files are a lot harder for people to edit and I wanted this to be easy. Since you didn't use them in the origional release, I just modified the .ini file and ditched the ones for the other pages. From there it became a deletion process basically getting rid of the extra programs. You'll also notice I left some programs in there that peopl can access if they so choose (like bananapc, windows calculator, etc.) I did this in case people wanted to expand on it and they were just small .exe files in windows. This way it kept it small and still provides a way to expand on it as people see fit. I owe a lot to you and your unlock, I had no programming knowledge until I started messing with it. I am going to try putting out another simple unlock based on the same concept of your original slimio for the H610 and for devices like the c230. The H610 will be challenging because it has other programs on it that aren't on other mio devices. I have a version of miopocket for the h610 to use as a guide, so from it I'll be typing code into an .ini file to make all the stuff on it work and to provide the ability to easily add more navigation programs. I did get lazy with the simple version, because you can tell I didn't rename a lot of stuff that I should have. I wanted to name the background image "background.bmp" but I kept it L1_BG because I honestly didn;t feel like retyping it. The same goes for the .ini file. I also was going to rename it from L1_Main to something that people might more easily recognize, but again laziness and the fact I have been typing so much for the coding in the monster unlock I put together. Since there aren't a lot of files in the simple version, I figure i is easy enough for people to understand. I'm actually done with the simple version for th c320 and c520. I quote you "it works". So if anyone wanted to add to it, they can. I personally use it for space reasons as I stated above. It came down to room and maps. Since I use my c320 for navigation more than anything else, I went with keeping the maps and giving up the added programs.

Ok, I just looked at what identical files you are talking about. I have two vesrions of the "notes" application. Little slip because one came when I transfered the "user apps" program over. I also see another duplicate for an execute file that didn't need to be in either place since the programs they launch no longer read from them. Eh, total for the duplicate files is like 8k, Not enough to mean anything and they don't effect anything. No worries, but good eye :)

I am always pushing people towards slimio and I am always quick to state that your unlock is the basis of what I put together. So much, if not all, of the credit should be going to you. You are not just the creator of slimio, but you are a great teacher as well. Without your or your unlock, I would still be clueless. Just wanted to let you know that. Thanks again for everything. I am putting together a version of the simple unlock for the c230 and then for the H610. The c230 will be easy, but I think putting it on the H610 will be challenging. Wish me luck.

Good luck with the other units, especially with finding missing dlls (here Osprey's MioPocket may prove to be very helpful).

Skylight, you should introduce your unlock in the "other forum". I have found that place to be a very valuable resource in terms of modifying my c320. This place is great too, but most of the people there are also here and those who aren't are really great at trying out new things and giving feedback, whether it be through the forum, email, or private messages. I seldom get that here. Hopefully I'll see you over there. As for the .dll's with the c230 that isn't really a problem. The biggest problem is trying to include an exit door on miomap so people can exit it and load the unlock. I can do it without any trouble on a c230 if it is in front of me, but trying to create something that does the modification to miomap without the user doing anything is a bit more complex... if not impossible. This is where wordpress and kombits are coming in handy, however this whole thing might also have me just typing up a whole new sys.txt for the c230 so it will work. This wouldn't be an issue, except I notice a lot of people tend o hesitate when it requires them to actually edit a file on their mio. But eh, I still need to get my mom's c230 to even test the whole thing out. Hopefully I'll see you at the other forum :)

Cool. I'll look for you there. I am almost finished with a release for devices with 320X240 screens. The changes were simple, but for the c230 the problem is having to make an exit door on miomap. It's there, but for some reason they hid it and you have to add a ";" before the line to unhide it. This is a necessary step if someone wants to use an unlock on the device. Osprey provided a small triangle somewhere on miopocket to minimize it, but I don't want the program minimized, especially if someone plans on running another navigation program. Now I just need to explain how to unhide the exit door in terms that are easy to follow. Anyways, I'll see you there :)

Here's my updated version of SLiMio (July).
It's similar to the previous one in the sense that it offers an SD-based unlock, a Flash-based unlock or a combination (either through an "unlock options" menu or automatically via SLiMio.ini configuration file). Main changes:

  • cePIMs is now pre-installed with SLiMio. It still needs to be installed once on the desktop PC, so that it can synchronize with Microsoft Outlook, but there's no need to install it on the device (C320) after hard-reset.
  • IGO8 shortcut included in Navigation screen.
  • A utility that turns off the display, but keeps everything running is included (thanks to Kalia). This can be used to extend the battery life when listenning to mp3 music. To activate it press the battery on the main screen (to turn the display on again hit the power-key shortly).
  • A simple skin is included in theme-4 (thanks to xtyler92 for some ideas). A quick look:

You can download it from:
http://www.mediafire.com/?9hx3drytcyi

I still need to take Jerry's latest MioMap skin and prepare an overide zip file to adapt it to SLiMio. Any additional feedback is welcome, especially on the simple skin. This can be used as a basis for a very small unlock (in size).

Hi, Gentlemen

I recently bought a c320 and tried both Mio pocket and SLiMio (July). I like SLiMio more because of its dedicated and easy-to-follow interface.

However I had problems when running TCPMP and Metro. For TCPMP, I got the same "network plugin" error message as mentioned in previous post. For Metro, I simply could not start it. Since for c320 there is no network connection anyway and not all releases of TCPMP include network plugin (Like Mio Pocket), I decided to delete the network plugin file and it magically makes the error message disappear.

For Metro, when I run it from Explorer, I noticed an error message complaining about missing DLL. I tried to wininet.dll to the Metro program directory and then Metro starts as it is supposed to be. It appears to me that Metro is dependent on wininet.dll and it should be included in "MioAutoRun" instead of "More Dlls".

Another question I have is about SetTime. By default whenever a hard reset is performed, SetTime is required and it is kind of inconvenient. Is there an internal clock in c320 that it can remember previous input and track the date and time automatically? I remember for c230 (which I bought and then returned), I don't have to do it on every hard reset. Also I noticed there is "time sync" utility in MioMap and it somewhat works. But the time it shows is Eastern time and somehow the adjustment on time zone does not work correctly. Just wondering if there is any way to fix this.

Thank you and your hard work does make a big difference :)

NPcomplete,
Thanks for your kind words.

I haven't figured out the problem with TCPMP's network plugin. I never get this error message. I suggest taking "network plugin" from other unlocks (I think I posted one somewhere) and see if this solves this issue. I liked what you did - maybe deletinh it is the best solution for now.

As for Metro, it seems like wininet.dll is missing from some of the C320 devices. I have it in my \Windows after hard reset, so I don't have this problem. What you should do is copy it (from Extra Dlls) to MioAutoRun\Unlock\Windows folder and it will be copied to your \Windows folder when you unlock your C320.

As for setting the time after hard-reset, I didn't want anything too complicated. After all, I don't do many hard resets. I did notice a "time sync" utility in MioPocket but am not sure how well it works. Maybe I'll get back to this sometime, but for now I think I'll leave it as it is and try to find some time to work on a lighter version of SLiMio.

.. speaking of this, I would really appreciate getting feedback from SLiMio users with regard to which applications they use. I guess some (if not many) of the applications are not really used and can be removed or at least separated, so that SLiMio can be divided to a basic (lighter) unlock core with some applications plus an "extra applications" package.

Skylight, you can take the Simple Unlock and modify it into a SD-free unlock if you want and use that as a slimio light package. Might be easier than removing stuff from slimio, especially since I stole a lot of it from your unlock to begin with. I am not doing anything else to it so if you want to take it over and do the mods to make it SD-free and call it Slimio Light, or Simple Slimio, or whatever then feel free. I thought about doing another couple themes for it, but I guess my interest has lowered. You can use any of them as well, this way it might be easier to include them using the code already in the Simple Unlock so you don't have to retype a whole lot of it. Just add the script for the theme changer and a small mortscript file for it to be SD-free and you're done :). Might save you the trouble of having to make a lot of changes on yours.

Mioman,
The icon size can be changed in the skins' theme files (*.ini files). For example, if you want to change the icons for games in theme1 you should look in MioAutoRun\Skin\Themes\T1\Apps\L2_Games.ini .
However, you need the icons to support different sizes. You may run into cases where you change the icon size but it stays small. Most icons are limited to what I had in mind, in order to save space. As xtyler said many times, finding icons is the problem. Let me know which icons you want to enlarge and I'll check if I have them.

The key to bigger icons is finding icons that are bigger than 32x32 in size. I like to find icons that are for windows XP, because most of them can be made bigger or smaller without the problem that come with other icons. They need to be .ico type icons. Other types usually won't work. I try to find icons that are 128x128 or 128 bit icons because those you know you can make as big as you need for the screen size of a c320 or c520. The icon archive is a good place to look, along with several other places you can find using google. I don't have my computer with my bookmarks here, but when I get home in a week I can post some links to great places for icons.

mioman... imageviewer works great for .jpg files, but that's about it. I personally use it because most pictures I have from my digital camera are in .jpeg format. There is another image viewer with slimio that views even more files. It's all on a basis of need. Also, with 4 themes available with slimio, you have a lot of options. Making personal changes is easy and once you dive into it, you'll get the hang of it pretty easy. Moving icons is just changing X and Y values. X's go left and right where Y's go up and down. At first it can be confusing, but if you stay with positive numbers for values then the greater the X value, the more to the right the icon or text will go. The same with the Y, the greater the Y value the more upwards the icons or words can go. So the beauty with slimio is you can really make it look however you want with some very small and simple changes. When changing the icons, just make sure to change it to the same name as the icon you are replacing. To make it bigger, increase the values for iconnormal and iconpushed. Have fun with it and start with just changing one of slimio's themes, this way if you screw something up you have other themes as backups. I personally love slimio and how easy it is to modify. Hopefully this will help.

There you just hit the "x" to close it. I haven't tried the new slimio, but I looked at the code and that's what should happen. As for the rest. I at one time modified slimio some. For battleship I rotated the screen and it gave me access to some of the little spots off the screen. I think pacman has issues on every unlock it is on. I remember something like that a long time ago. I can't remember the cause. The two are not related, because the POI are part of the maps and the program for miomap is basically controlled by the data.zip, neither of which have anything to do with the TTS files. What version of Jerry's skin are you using? Oh, I just thought of this too, with slimio there is a data override for Jerry's skin. I haven't used it in a long time nor slimio in awhile, but it might have something to do with that. Skylight would better know the answer. I would go with Jerry's skin but the 5/12 version since I believe Skylight has already installed a data override for that version with slimio. If that don't work, try deleting the data override folder that came with slimio. I use Jerry's 5/12 skin and no data override and I don't have that problem.

Well, I posted this in the other thread:
Brian, make sure you have them highlighted in the poi menu. I didn't think of that a few minutes ago. When going through your POI, say gas stations. You can click that and have the option to show them. I can't remember exactly off hand, but you'll need to make sure some are highlighted. Specifically: when in miomap go to "menu" and there you'll have all the buttons like address, history, coordinates, etc. at the bottom there is a little gear next to a magnifying glass. Click the gear. A menu will pop up where you'll see a hammer on a button called "Manage POI". click that. There a page will load with your POI and you need to pick which will be shown. You can click an entire category, like say shopping for example, click it and hit show at the bottom. It will now be highlighted orange I believe. Now all the shopping POI will show on your map. Gas stations are under services. If you don;t want all the services showing just double click it and then click gas stations and hit show on the bottom, etc... for any other POI you want to show up. Hope that helps.

I just thought of all that a little late it sounds. I would do this... If you plan on using slimio, then start first by installing TTS as you did before. This should be simple since you did it once. Also TTS runs pretty independently in the sense of the skin and the unlock. So do that first. Second install Jerry's 5/12 skin, simple to do just change the data.zip as you did before. Next install slimio. Also follow what I said in previous point about POI and Jerry's skin. You'll need to highlight which you want to show on the map. Then they will show up when you hit the little POI icon on the map with jerry's skin. My guess is you didn't have any highlighted. Hope that helps... and sorry I came up with it late. I had a lot going on and it took me a little while to realize what you had to do.

Well before the final reset I tried one last attempt and went into manage POIs. I found that my pois that I had loaded on my sd card was listed as show as was a few others..... After I hid everything and only had the gas stations under SHOW, it started to work as it should! Yeah, I feel like Im making some progress...So I have the 5/12 skin with TTS! Now Ill use one of my 2 gig cards for the rest of the SD install. Thanks for the help guys!

Have fun Brian and you'll figure it all out. The miomap stuff is a little complicated based on it's interface. Once you mess around with it some you'll get used to it and everything will be easier.

Guys,
I apologize for not being able to participate in your discussion. I just moved to a new place and there's so much work to do. I will probably be away for a couple of weeks. xtyler, thanks for helping me out.

As for the POIs, I'm not an expert on this but I have seen such issues reported on other threads. I think DrWho was the "pro" on this. It seems that you need to carefully check the POIs you want. Otherwise MioMap tries to load the entire database (everything that is checked) and that can take several minutes, giving the impression that the unit is stuck.

Guys,
I apologize for abandoning this thread. I'm Still busy with the new home and other stuff. I hope to get back soon and see how to continue improving SLiMio. Some ideas:

  • xtyler's simple themes that I want to add plus some applications he noted how to make better
  • Looking for new intersting stuff that can be imported (mainly from MioPocket)
  • Overide files for Jerry's latest MioMap skin

Hello!

I have C320b and I'm using SliMio unlock theme. Everything works fine except TomTom. I installed TomTom navigator and it works fine with other themes, but with SliMio I only get an error message: "Cannot find mobilenavigator (or one of its components)". I get this message if I click the mobilenavigator.exe file. I have also tried to execute other .exe, which come with other themes, but they're not working either. So the problem is not TomTom. Should I do some register tweaks?

I've tried to find a solution from the internet without a result. SliMio seems to be a very good theme, so please help me to get a fully functioning device with two navigation applications. :)

@Pasi,
I don't have Tomtom, so I never tried to make it run on SLiMio. I suggest you do the following:

  • Check if Tomtom runs with MioPocket
  • If so, look at the following MioPocket's folder: MioAutoRun\System and copy the dlls from there and from folder CE5 therein to your Tomtom folder
  • If that's sufficient to make Tomtom work, start deleting the dlls you added one by one until you find those that Tomtom needs

Also, take a look at the mscr script that launches Tomtom (under MioAutoRun\Scripts. You might need to rotate the screen and hide the task bar. I vaguely recall another fix that was required to run Tomtom (something about changing the "My documents" folder... I'm not sure).

Let me know how it goes :)

I already had SliMio installed, so first I copied those dll's to TomTom folder. After that, i got TomTom splash screen, but after few seconds it disappeared but the application didn't start. So I didn't delete those dll's one by one to get it work.

Then I installed MioPocket and deleted all those copied dll's from the TomTom folder. When I clicked TomTom icon on the desktop, MioPocket asked me to show the right location of the TomTom.exe. I selected mobilenavigator.exe and after that TomTom works fine. It also works by clicking the .exe file using Explorer.

Thanks anyway, I think I'm happy with MioPocket (I hadn't heard about it before, I bought this device less that week ago...;)), but I can test some modifications to get it work, if it helps someone else and you have interests to think about it. :)

If I do the unlocking, there is a way for going backward to the original ?

In order to go back to the original, you need to hold down (press) the power key for about 10 seconds (the device will shut down). Then you release the power key and press it again for about 3 seconds and your device initializes like "the first time". There will still be some stuff in the internal Flash, if you chose to install the unlock (or part of it) to the Flash, but these can be removed.

Hey SkyLight!

I have a Canadian Mio Moov 310 (CobiaT400). My brother has been messing around with it with many unlocks until he finally installed the "SLiMio".

The question is that it didn’t actually work! Now the GPS doesn’t synchronize with the computer anymore and when I turn it on it goes to this screen:

"Select which type of unlock you prefer:
Storage Card (SD) or Flash Disk (FD) based"

After that other 5 different options:

SD - Skin and Apps are on SD-Card
FD - Skin and Apps should already be on the Flash Disk
FD – Skin and Apps will be copied to the Flash Disk
SD/FD - Combination - Skin on FD, Apps on FD / SD per ini file
Exit - Do not unlock device

It gives only me two possibilities: "Ok" e "Cancel", but it doesn’t matter which one a choose; it restarts the GPS and goes back to the same screen.

Depending on which option I choose there is also an error message that says: “Error: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SnoopSoft\BananaPC 112” followed by an endless loop of other error screens.

I think that the best option would be to try to install some other scrit that self-starts and would allow me to see the internal flash so that I could place a file manager like Total Commander to replace the content for the orginal files.

I tried to rename many times the files and folders but nothing happens and I also tried do install the MioPocket but I'm not sure if I'm doing the right renaming.

I searched the net up and down and can't find a solution.

I don’t know how to hard reset it as well, could please help?

Thanks!

All the best!

Mr_Black

- Now verify that the SD-card is in its place, and press the "power" key for 3-4 seconds, until you see your C320 starts. You should have the mainshell screen. Wait for a couple of seconds.
- Press the power key again, but this time only shortly - your C320 screen should turn off. Wait a second and press the power key shortly once more. Your screen should turn on and the unlock process start.
- After a short while, your C320 restarts (you see a black screen with the F/W numbers on the top left).

Hello,

well, i followed all the steps but the unlock process doesn't start , any suggestions?

Thanks anyway.
