Intro
Similarly to most
modern pieces of electronics, there are three main aspects to GPS Receivers,
the chip, the chipset and the design around the chipset. While there are
generally a limited number of chips and chipsets (Intel, AMD or VIA for
computers), the only limit to designs is what the market will bear ! Similar
to computers there are ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers) who design a
working product and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) who have the
design customized to their needs and bring it to market.
To keep things simple, these "Hardware" pages will
mainly focus on the chips used in GPS receivers and on the models available
to the general public. The main emphasis will be on GPS receivers for
PocketPC receivers but over time I'll add other GPS products that offer
similar experiences, i.e. auto-routing portable GPS receivers by Garmin or
built-in navigation modules for cars.
One question that often comes up is "what's best, a
standalone auto-routing GPS or a PPC with navigation software"...Tough one !
